We study the conversion of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms into stable molecules through the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in photoassociation assisted with Feshbach resonance. Starting with the mean-field Langrange density, we show that the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency by STIRAP aided by Feshbach resonance is much larger than that by bare Feshbach resonance. We also study the influence of the population imbalance on the atom-to-molecule conversion.
We report experimental studies on optical (birefringence, $Δn$), dielectric $(Δ\varepsilon)$ and bend-splay elastic anisotropies ($ΔK=K_{33}-K_{11})$ of a few mixtures of two nematic liquid crystals, namely CCH-7 and CCN-47, made of highly polar molecules with identical cores and antagonistic orientation of permanent dipoles. In particular, the polar group (-CN) attached to the bicyclohexane core of CCH-7 is oriented along the longitudinal direction whereas, in CCN-47, it is oriented along the transverse direction. We show that apart from the significant contribution to the optical and dielect…
Exact relations between charge-density functions determining the total Coulomb energy and the dielectric constant for a mixture of neutral and charged site-site molecules
Surface segregation of the low-molecular weight component in a polymeric mixture leads to degradation of industrial formulations. We report a simultaneous phase separation and surface migration phenomena in oligomer-polymer and oligomer-gel systems following a temperature quench. We compute equilibrium and time varying migrant density profiles and wetting layer thickness using coarse grained molecular dynamics and mesoscale hydrodynamics simulations to demonstrate that surface migration in oligomer-gel systems is significantly reduced due to network elasticity. Further, phase separation proces…
We consider a new class of model systems to study systematically the role of molecular shape in the transport properties of dense liquids. Our model is a liquid binary mixture where both the molecules are non-spherical and characterized by a collection of parameters. Although in the real world most of the molecules are non-spherical, only a limited number of theoretical studies exist on the effects of molecular shapes and hardly any have addressed the validity of the hydrodynamic predictions of rotational and translational diffusion of these shapes in liquids. In this work, we study a model li…
In this paper we obtain the first general multi-component solution to thermodynamic perturbation theory for the case that molecules can participate in cyclic double bonds. In contrast to previous authors, we do not restrict double bonding molecules to a 2-site association scheme. Each molecule in a multi-component mixture can have an arbitrary number of donor and acceptor association sites. The one restriction on the theory is that molecules can have at most one pair of double bonding sites. We also incorporate the effect of hydrogen bond cooperativity in cyclic double bonds. We then apply thi…
This work describes the behaviour of water molecules in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid under nanoconfinement between graphene sheets. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, an adsorption of water molecules at the graphene surface is studied. A depletion of water molecules in the vicinity of the neutral and negatively charged graphene surfaces and their adsorption at the positively charged surface are observed in line with the preferential hydration of the ionic liquid anions. The findings are appropriately described using a two-level statistical model. The conf…
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM, is a widely studied polymer, which serves as a key constituent of nanostructured soft materials with responsive properties. Upon increasing temperature the PNIPAM polymer chain undergoes a reversible coil-to-globule transition at ~305K, which is reflected by a volume phase transition in cross-linked architectures, such as microgels, valuable for many practical applications. The addition of a cosolvent is a simple method to tune the transition temperature according to the specific purpose. In this study, we use atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to exp…
We extend Wertheim's thermodynamic perturbation theory to derive the association free energy of a multicomponent mixture for which double bonds can form between any two pairs of the molecules' arbitrary number of bonding sites. This generalization reduces in limiting cases to prior theories that restrict double bonding to at most one pair of sites per molecule. We apply the new theory to an associating mixture of colloidal particles ("colloids") and flexible chain molecules ("linkers"). The linkers have two functional end groups, each of which may bond to one of several sites on the colloids. …
We show here that molecular resolution is inherently hybrid in terms of relative separation: If molecules are close to each other, they must be characterized by a fine-grained (geometrically detailed) model, yet if molecules are far from each other, they may be described by a coarse-grained (isotropically simplified) model. We notably present an analytical expression for relating the two models by energy conservation. This hybrid framework is correspondingly capable of retrieving the structural and thermal behavior of various multi-component and multi-phase fluids across state space.
