We define and study symmetrized and antisymmetrized multivariate exponential functions. They are defined as determinants and antideterminants of matrices whose entries are exponential functions of one variable. These functions are eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on corresponding fundamental domains satisfying certain boundary conditions. To symmetric and antisymmetric multivariate exponential functions there correspond Fourier transforms. There are three types of such Fourier transforms: expansions into corresponding Fourier series, integral Fourier transforms, and multivariate finite Fourier transforms. Eigenfunctions of the integral Fourier transforms are found.
Four families of special functions, depending on n variables, are studied. We call them symmetric and antisymmetric multivariate sine and cosine functions. They are given as determinants or antideterminants of matrices, whose matrix elements are sine or cosine functions of one variable each. These functions are eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator, satisfying specific conditions at the boundary of a certain domain F of the n-dimensional Euclidean space. Discrete and continuous orthogonality on F of the functions within each family, allows one to introduce symmetrized and antisymmetrized mult…
In this paper we generalize the continuous quaternion windowed Fourier transform called the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion windowed Fourier transform. Using the two sided quaternion Fourier transform we derive several important properties.
Multivariate quasi-projection operators $Q_j(f,φ, \widetildeφ)$, associated with a function $φ$ and a distribution/function $\widetildeφ$, are considered. The function $φ$ is supposed to satisfy the Strang-Fix conditions and a compatibility condition with $\widetildeφ$. Using technique based on the Fourier multipliers, we studied approximation properties of such operators for functions $f$ from anisotropic Besov spaces and $L_p$ spaces with $1\le p\le \infty$. In particular, upper and lower estimates of the $L_p$-error of approximation in terms of moduli of smoothness and best approximations a…
The discrete cosine transforms of types V--VIII are generalized to the antisymmetric and symmetric multivariate discrete cosine transforms. Four families of discretely and continuously orthogonal Chebyshev-like polynomials corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric generalizations of cosine functions are introduced. Each family forms an orthogonal basis of the space of all polynomials with respect to some weighted integral. Cubature formulas, which correspond to these families of polynomials and which stem from the developed discrete cosine transforms, are derived. Examples of three-dime…
Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball are obtained. By using Parseval's identity, a new family of multivariate orthogonal functions are introduced. The results are expressed in terms of the continuous Hahn polynomials.
In this paper Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the simplex is presented. A new family of multivariate orthogonal functions is obtained by using the Parseval's identity and several recurrence relations are derived.
In this paper, we generalize the continuous quaternion shearlet transform on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ to $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, called the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion shearlet transform. Using the two sided quaternion Fourier transform, we derive several important properties such as (reconstruction formula, reproducing kernel, plancherel's formula, etc.). We present several example of the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion shearlet transform. We apply the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion shearlet transform properties and the two sided quaternion Fourier transform to …
Approximation properties of multivariate Kantorovich-Kotelnikov type operators generated by different band-limited functions are studied. In particular, a wide class of functions with discontinuous Fourier transform is considered. The $L_p$-rate of convergence for these operators is given in terms of the classical moduli of smoothness. Several examples of the Kantorovich-Kotelnikov operators generated by the ${\rm sinc}$-function and its linear combinations are provided.
Sparse interpolation} refers to the exact recovery of a function as a short linear combination of basis functions from a limited number of evaluations. For multivariate functions, the case of the monomial basis is well studied, as is now the basis of exponential functions. Beyond the multivariate Chebyshev polynomial obtained as tensor products of univariate Chebyshev polynomials, the theory of root systems allows to define a variety of generalized multivariate Chebyshev polynomials that have connections to topics such as Fourier analysis and representations of Lie algebras. We present a deter…
Approximation properties of periodic quasi-projection operators with matrix dilations are studied. Such operators are generated by a sequence of functions $φ_j$ and a sequence of distributions/functions $\widetildeφ_j$. Error estimates for sampling-type quasi-projection operators are obtained under the periodic Strang-Fix conditions for $φ_j$ and the compatibility conditions for $φ_j$ and $\widetildeφ_j$. These estimates are given in terms of the Fourier coefficients of approximated functions and provide analogs of some known non-periodic results. Under some additional assumptions error estima…
We provide a multidimensional weighted Euler--MacLaurin summation formula on polytopes and a multidimensional generalization of a result due to L. J. Mordell on the series expansion in Bernoulli polynomials. These results are consequences of a more general series expansion; namely, if $χ_{τ\mathcal{P}}$ denotes the characteristic function of a dilated integer convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ and $q$ is a function with suitable regularity, we prove that the periodization of $qχ_{τ\mathcal{P}}$ admits an expansion in terms of multivariate Bernoulli polynomials. These multivariate polynomials are re…
We study random variables of the form $f(X)$, when $f$ is a degree $d$ polynomial, and $X$ is a random vector on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, motivated towards a deeper understanding of the covariance structure of $X^{\otimes d}$. For applications, the main interest is to bound $\mathrm{Var}(f(X))$ from below, assuming a suitable normalization on the coefficients of $f$. Our first result applies when $X$ has independent coordinates, and we establish dimension-free bounds. We also show that the assumption of independence can be relaxed and that our bounds carry over to uniform measures on isotropic $L_{p}…
We prove that, for functions in the Orlicz class LloglogLloglogloglogL, lacunary subsequences of the Fourier and the Walsh-Fourier series converge almost everywhere. Our integrability condition is less stringent than the homologous assumption in the almost everywhere convergence theorems of Lie (Fourier case) and Do-Lacey (Walsh-Fourier case), where the quadruple logarithmic term is replaced by a triple logarithm. Our proof of the Walsh-Fourier case is self-contained and, in antithesis to Do and Lacey's argument, avoids the use of Antonov's lemma, arguing directly via novel weak-L^p bounds for…
In this paper, we investigate the behavior of the Fourier transform on finite dimensional 2-step Lie groups and develop a general theory akin to that of the whole space or the torus. We provide a familiar framework in which computations are made sensibly easier than with the usual representation-theoretic Fourier transform. In addition, we study the 'singular frequencies' of the group, at which the canonical bilinear antisymmetric form degenerates. We also exhibit a specific example for which partial degeneracy of the canonical form occurs, as opposed to the full degeneracy at the origin. We t…
The approximation of a general $d$-variate function $f$ by the shifts $ϕ(\cdot-ξ)$, $ξ\inΞ\subset \Rd$, of a fixed function $ϕ$ occurs in many applications such as data fitting, neural networks, and learning theory. When $Ξ=h\Z^d$ is a dilate of the integer lattice, there is a rather complete understanding of the approximation problem \cite{BDR,Johnson1} using Fourier techniques. However, in most applications the {\it center} set $Ξ$ is either given, or can be chosen with complete freedom. In both of these cases, the shift-invariant setting is too restrictive. This paper studies the approximat…
We study the "Fourier symmetry" of measures and distributions on the circle, in relation with the size of their supports. The main results of this paper are: (1) A one-side extension of Frostman's theorem, which connects the rate of decay of Fourier transform of a distribution with the Hausdorff dimension of the support; (2) A construction of compacts of "critical" size, which support distributions (even pseudo-functions) with anti-analytic part belonging to l^2. We also give examples of non-symmetry which may occur for measures with "small" support. A number of open questions are stated.
In analogy with the Poisson summation formula, we identify when the fractional Fourier transform, applied to a Dirac comb in dimension one, gives a discretely supported measure. We describe the resulting series of complex multiples of delta functions, and through either the metaplectic representation of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or the Bargmann transform, we see that the the identification of these measures is equivalent to the functional equation for the Jacobi theta functions. In tracing the values of the antiderivative in certain small-angle limits, we observe Euler spirals, and on a smaller scale…
