We analyze several integrable systems in zero-curvature form within the framework of $SL(2,\R)$ invariant gauge theory. In the Drienfeld-Sokolov gauge we derive a two-parameter family of nonlinear evolution equations which as special cases include the Kortweg-de Vries (KdV) and Harry Dym equations. We find residual gauge transformations which lead to infinintesimal symmetries of this family of equations. For KdV and Harry Dym equations we find an infinite hierarchy of such symmetry transformations, and we investigate their relation with local conservation laws, constants of the motion and the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the equations. Applying successive gauge transformatinos of Miura type we obtain a sequence of gauge equivalent integrable systems, among them the modified KdV and Calogero KdV equations.
We present part of our investigations on two dimensional N=1 and N=2 superconformal field theories. As a direct generalization we consider the SU(2) coset models, in particular their renormalization group properties. A search and possible implementation of additional symmetries in related integrable models are also presented.
A unified description of the relationship between the Hamiltonian structure of a large class of integrable hierarchies of equations and W-algebras is discussed. The main result is an explicit formula showing that the former can be understood as a deformation of the latter.
We present a notion of symmetry for 1+1-dimensional integrable systems which is consistent with their group theoretic description and reproduces in special cases the known Baecklund transformation for the generalized Korteweg-deVries hierarchies. We also apply it to the relativistic invariance of the Leznov-Saveliev systems.
We employ appropriate realizations of the affine Hecke algebra and we recover previously known non-diagonal solutions of the reflection equation for the $U_{q}(\hat{gl_n})$ case. With the help of linear intertwining relations involving the aforementioned solutions of the reflection equation, the symmetry of the open spin chain with a particular choice of the left boundary is exhibited. The symmetry of the corresponding local Hamiltonian is also explored.
The properties of discrete nonlinear symmetries of integrable equations are investigated. These symmetries are shown to be canonical transformations. On the basis of the considered examples, it is concluded, that the densities of the conservation laws are changed under these transformations by spatial divergencies.
We find an infinite set of new noncommuting conserved charges in a specific class of perturbed CFT's and present a criterion for their existence. They appear to be higher momenta of the already known commuting conserved currents. The algebra they close consists of two noncommuting$W_\infty$ algebras. We find various Virasoro subalgebras of the full symmetry algebra. It is shown on the examples of the perturbed Ising and Potts models that one of them plays an essencial role in the computation of the correlation functions of the fields of the theory.
We study additional non-isospectral symmetries of constrained (reduced) N=2 supersymmetric KP hierarchies of integrable ``soliton''-like evolution equations. These symmetries are shown to form an infinite-dimensional non-Abelian superloop superalgebra. Furthermore we study the general Darboux-Backlund (DB) transformations (including adjoint-DB and binary DB) of N=2 super- KP hierarchies preserving (most of) the additional symmetries. Also we derive the explicit form of the general DB (N=2 ``super- soliton''-like) solutions in the form of generalized Wronskian-like super-determinants.
The knowledge of {\it non usual} and sometimes {\it hidden} symmetries of (classical) integrable systems provides a very powerful setting-out of solutions of these models. Primarily, the understanding and possibly the quantisation of intriguing symmetries could give rise to deeper insight into the nature of field spectrum and correlation functions in quantum integrable models. With this perspective in mind we will propose a general framework for discovery and investigation of local, quasi-local and non-local symmetries in classical integrable systems. We will pay particular attention to the st…
The soliton spectrum (massive and massless) of a family of integrable models with local U(1) and U(1)\otimes U(1) symmetries is studied. These models represent relevant integrable deformations of SL(2,R) \otimes U(1)^{n-1} - WZW and SL(2,R) \otimes SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)^{n-2} - WZW models. Their massless solitons appears as specific topological solutions of the U(1) (or U(1)\otimes U(1)) - CFTs. The nonconformal analog of the GKO-coset formula is derived and used in the construction of the composite massive solitons of the ungauged integrable models.
A difference analogue of the logistic equation, which preserves integrability, is derived from Hirota's bilinear difference equation. The integrability of the map is shown to result from the large symmetry associated with the Bäcklund transformation of the KP hierarchy. We introduce a scheme which interpolates between this map and the standard logistic map and enables us to study integrable and nonintegrable systems on an equal basis. In particular we study the behavior of Julia set at the point where the nonintegrable map passes to the integrable map.
It is shown that in the case of multicomponent integrable systems connected with algebras $A_n$, the discrete transformation $T$ possesses the fine structure and can be represented in the form $T=\prod T_i^{l_i}$, where $T_i$ are n commuting basis discrete transformations, and $l_i$ are arbitrary natural numbers. All the calculations are conducted in detail for the case of a 3-wave interacting system.
A multi-parameter integrable deformation of the principal chiral model is presented. The Yang-Baxter and bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-models, the principal chiral model plus a Wess-Zumino term and the TsT transformation of the principal chiral model are all recovered when the appropriate deformation parameters vanish. When the Lie group is SU(2), we show that this four-parameter integrable deformation of the SU(2) principal chiral model corresponds to the Lukyanov model.
One of the few schemes for obtaining an integrable nonultralocal quantum model is its possible generation from an ultralocal model by a suitable gauge transformation. Applying this scheme we discover two new nonultralocal models, which fit well into the braided Yang-Baxter relations ensuring their quantum integrability. Our first model is generated from a lattice Liouville-like system, while the second one which is an exact lattice version of the light-cone sine-Gordon is gauge transformed from a model, which gives also the quantum mKdV for a different gauge choice.
We propose a systematic treatment of symmetries of KP integrable systems, including constrained (reduced) KP models ${\sl cKP}_{R,M}$, and their multi-component (matrix) generalizations. Any such integrable hierarchy is shown to possess an additional $({\hat U}(1)\oplus{\hat {SL}}(M))_{+} \oplus ({\hat {SL}}(M+R))_{-}$ loop-algebra symmetry. Also we provide a systematic construction of the full algebra of Virasoro additional symmetries in the case of constrained KP models which requires a nontrivial modification of the known Orlov-Schulman construction for the general unconstrained KP hierarch…
We conjecture the factorized scattering description for OSP(m/2n)/OSP(m-1/2n) supersphere sigma models and OSP(m/2n) Gross Neveu models. The non-unitarity of these field theories translates into a lack of `physical unitarity' of the S matrices, which are instead unitary with respect to the non-positive scalar product inherited from the orthosymplectic structure. Nevertheless, we find that formal thermodynamic Bethe ansatz calculations appear meaningful, reproduce the correct central charges, and agree with perturbative calculations. This paves the way to a more thorough study of these and othe…
This paper is devoted to the systematic study of additional (non- isospectral) symmetries of constrained (reduced) supersymmetric integrable hierarchies of KP type- the so called SKP_(R;M_B,M_F) models. The latter are supersymmetric extensions of ordinary constrained KP hierarchies which contain as special cases basic integrable systems such as (m)KdV, AKNS, Fordy-Kulish, Yajima- Oikawa etc.. As a first main result it is shown that any SKP_(R;M_B,M_F) hierarchy possesses two different mutually (anti-)commuting types of superloop superalgebra additional symmetries corresponding to the positive-…
We describe an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. Our derivation is based on a generalization of the supertwistor correspondence. Using the latter, we construct an infinite sequence of flows on the solution space of the N=4 SYM equations. The dependence of the SYM fields on the parameters along the flows can be recovered by solving the equations of the hierarchy. We embed the N=4 SYM equations in the infinite system of the hierarchy equations and show that this SYM hierarchy is associated with an infinite set of graded symmetries re…
Various aspects of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain with 1/r^2 exchange, and its various generalizations, are reviewed, with emphasis on its Yangian quantum group structure, and the interpretation of the model as the generalization of an ideal gas (of ``spinons'') to the case of fractional statistics. Some recent results on its dynamical correlation function are discussed, and conjectured extensions of these remarkably simple results to the $SU(n)$ model, and to the related Calogero-Sutherland model with integer coupling constant, are presented. (Talk presented at the 16th. Taniguchi Symposium, …
A higher dimensional analogue of the dispersionless KP hierarchy is introduced. In addition to the two-dimensional ``phase space'' variables $(k,x)$ of the dispersionless KP hierarchy, this hierarchy has extra spatial dimensions compactified to a two (or any even) dimensional torus. Integrability of this hierarchy and the existence of an infinite dimensional of ``additional symmetries'' are ensured by an underlying twistor theoretical structure (or a nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem). An analogue of the tau function, whose logarithm gives the $F$ function (``free energy'' or ``prepotential'' …
Using anisotropic R-matrices associated with affine Lie algebras $\hat g$ (specifically, $A_{2n}^{(2)}, A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, B_n^{(1)}, C_n^{(1)}, D_n^{(1)}$) and suitable corresponding K-matrices, we construct families of integrable open quantum spin chains of finite length, whose transfer matrices are invariant under the quantum group corresponding to removing one node from the Dynkin diagram of $\hat g$. We show that these transfer matrices also have a duality symmetry (for the cases $C_n^{(1)}$ and $D_n^{(1)}$) and additional $Z_2$ symmetries that map complex representations to their conjugates…
We split the generic conformal mechanical system into a "radial" and an "angular" part, where the latter is defined as the Hamiltonian system on the orbit of the conformal group, with the Casimir function in the role of the Hamiltonian. We reduce the analysis of the constants of motion of the full system to the study of certain differential equations on this orbit. For integrable mechanical systems, the conformal invariance renders them superintegrable, yielding an additional series of conserved quantities originally found by Wojciechowski in the rational Calogero model. Finally, we show that,…
As a step to understand general patterns of integrability in 1+1 quantum field theories with supergroup symmetry, we study in details the case of $OSP(1/2)$. Our results include the solutions of natural generalizations of models with ordinary group symmetry: the $UOSP(1/2)_{k}$ WZW model with a current current perturbation, the $UOSP(1/2)$ principal chiral model, and the $UOSP(1/2)\otimes UOSP(1/2)/UOSP(1/2)$ coset models perturbed by the adjoint. Graded parafermions are also discussed. A pattern peculiar to supergroups is the emergence of another class of models, whose simplest representative…
We explore two distinct methods to introduce integrable defects in a family of integrable sigma-models known as Yang-Baxter models. The first method invokes a modified monodromy matrix encoding an integrable defect separating two integrable systems. As an example we construct integrable defects in the ultralocal version of the $S^2$ Yang-Baxter model or 2d Fateev sausage model. The second method is based on the so-called "frozen" Bäcklund transformations. Lifting the construction to the Drinfel'd double, we show how defect matrices can be constructed for inhomogeneous Yang-Baxter models. We pr…
We resolve a problem of finding the Poincare symmetries from hamiltonian gauge symmetries constructed through a canonical procedure of handling constrained systems. Through the use of Noether identities corresponding to the symmetries, we motivate a procedure of finding the map between the hamiltonian and Poincare gauge parameters. Using this map, we show that the Poincare and hamiltonian gauge symmetries are equivalent, modulo trivial gauge transformations.
The Darboux transformation on matrix solutions to the generalized coupled dispersionless integrable system based on some non-abelian Lie group, is studied and the solutions are shown to be expressed in terms of quasideterminants. As an explicit example, the Darboux transformation on scalar solutions to the system based on the Lie group SU(2) is discussed in detail and the solutions are shown to be expressed as ratios of determinants.
In this dissertation we study hidden symmetries within the framework of string theory. There are two kinds of hidden symmetries investigated in this work: the first type is associated with dynamics of quantum fields and the second type is related to integrability of strings on various backgrounds. The goals of this thesis are twofold: extension of hidden symmetries known in general relativity to stringy backgrounds in higher dimensions and construction of new integrable string theories. In the context of the first goal we study hidden symmetries of stringy backgrounds, with and without supersy…
We illustrate the basic notions of {\em additional non-isospectral symmetries} and their interplay with the discrete {\em \DB transformations} of integrable systems at the instance of {\em constrained Kadomtsev-Petviashvili} (\cKP) integrable hierarchies. As a main application we present the solution of discrete multi-matrix string models in terms of Wronskian $\t$-functions of graded $SL(m,1)$ \cKP hierarchies.
We consider the algebraic setting of classical defects in discrete and continuous integrable theories. We derive the "equations of motion" on the defect point via the space-like and time-like description. We then exploit the structural similarity of these equations with the discrete and continuous Backlund transformations. And although these equations are similar they are not exactly the same to the Backlund transformations. We also consider specific examples of integrable models to demonstrate our construction, i.e. the Toda chain and the sine-Gordon model. The equations of the time (space) e…
We introduce a new concept of quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras. The quantum quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras being simple but non-trivial deformations of ordinary algebras of monodromy matrices realize a new type of quantum dynamical symmetries and find an unexpected and remarkable applications in quantum inverse scattering method (QISM). We show that applying to quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras the standard procedure of QISM one obtains new wide classes of quantum models which, being integrable (i.e. having enough number of commuting integrals of motion) are only quasi-exactly solvable (i.e. admit an algebraic…
We consider integrable vertex models whose Boltzmann weights (R-matrices) are trigonometric solutions to the graded Yang-Baxter equation. As is well known the latter can be generically constructed from quantum affine superalgebras $U_{q}(\hat g)$. These algebras do not form a symmetry algebra of the model for generic values of the deformation parameter $q$ when periodic boundary conditions are imposed. If $q$ is evaluated at a root of unity we demonstrate that in certain commensurate sectors one can construct non-abelian subalgebras which are translation invariant and supercommute with the tra…
We prove the existence of hidden symmetries in the general relativity theory defined by exact solutions with generic off-diagonal metrics, nonholonomic (non-integrable) constraints, and deformations of the frame and linear connection structure. A special role in characterization of such spacetimes is played by the corresponding nonholonomic generalizations of Stackel-Killing and Killing-Yano tensors. There are constructed new classes of black hole solutions and studied hidden symmetries for ellipsoidal and/or solitonic deformations of "prime" Kerr-Sen black holes into "target" off-diagonal met…
We address the novel structures arising in quantum and string integrable theories, as well as construct methods to obtain them and provide further analysis. Specifically, we implement the automorphic symmetries on periodic lattice systems to obtain integrable hierarchies, whose commutativity and integrable transformations induce a generating structure of integrable classes. This prescription is first applied to 2-dim and 4-dim setups, where we find the new $ \mathfrak{sl}_{2} $ sector, $ \mathfrak{su}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(2) $ with superconductive modes, Generalised Hubbard type classes and…
For the integrable case of the discrete self-trapping (DST) model we construct a Backlund transformation. The dual Lax matrix and the corresponding dual Backlund transformation are also found and studied. The quantum analog of the Backlund transformation (Q-operator) is constructed as the trace of a monodromy matrix with an infinite-dimensional auxiliary space. We present the Q-operator as an explicit integral operator as well as describe its action on the monomial basis. As a result we obtain a family of integral equations for multivariable polynomial eigenfunctions of the quantum integrable …
A new super-Backlund transformation for the N=1 supersymmetric sinh-Gordon equation is constructed. Based on this construction we propose a type-II integrable defect for the supersymmetric sinh-Gordon model consistent with this new transformation through the Lagrangian formalism. Explicit expressions for the modified conserved energy, momentum and supercharges are also computed. In addition, we show for the model that the type-II defect can also been regarded as a pair of fused defects of a previously introduced type. The explicit derivation of the associated defect matrices is also presented …
We present a geometric construction of Backlund transformations and discretizations for a large class of algebraic completely integrable systems. To be more precise, we construct families of Backlund transformations, which are naturally parametrized by the points on the spectral curve(s) of the system. The key idea is that a point on the curve determines, through the Abel-Jacobi map, a vector on its Jacobian which determines a translation on the corresponding level set of the integrals (the generic level set of an algebraic completely integrable systems has a group structure). Globalizing this…
A key feature of integrable systems is that they can be solved to obtain exact analytical solutions. We show how new models can be constructed through generalisations of some well known nonlinear partial differential equations with PT-symmetries whilst preserving integrability. Subsequently, we develop new methods from well-known ones to obtain exact analytical soliton solutions for these new systems. The first PT-symmetric generalization we take are extensions to the complex and multicomplex fields. In agreement with the reality property present in PT-symmetric non-Hermitian quantum systems, …
We present a multiparameter generalization of the Stäckel transform (the latter is also known as the coupling-constant metamorphosis) and show that under certain conditions this generalized Stäckel transform preserves the Liouville integrability, noncommutative integrability and superintegrability. The corresponding transformation for the equations of motion proves to be nothing but a reciprocal transformation of a special form, and we investigate the properties of this reciprocal transformation. Finally, we show that the Hamiltonians of the systems possessing separation curves of apparently v…
