Using anisotropic R-matrices associated with affine Lie algebras $\hat g$ (specifically, $A_{2n}^{(2)}, A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, B_n^{(1)}, C_n^{(1)}, D_n^{(1)}$) and suitable corresponding K-matrices, we construct families of integrable open quantum spin chains of finite length, whose transfer matrices are invariant under the quantum group corresponding to removing one node from the Dynkin diagram of $\hat g$. We show that these transfer matrices also have a duality symmetry (for the cases $C_n^{(1)}$ and $D_n^{(1)}$) and additional $Z_2$ symmetries that map complex representations to their conjugates (for the cases $A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, B_n^{(1)}, D_n^{(1)}$). A key simplification is achieved by working in a certain "unitary" gauge, in which only the unbroken symmetry generators appear. The proofs of these symmetries rely on some new properties of the R-matrices. We use these symmetries to explain the degeneracies of the transfer matrices.
We study elliptic fibrations for F-theory compactifications realizing 4d and 6d supersymmetric gauge theories with abelian gauge factors. In the fibration these U(1) symmetries are realized in terms of additional rational sections. We obtain a universal characterization of all the possible U(1) charges of matter fields by determining the corresponding codimension two fibers with rational sections. In view of modelling supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories, one of the main examples that we analyze are U(1) symmetries for SU(5) gauge theories with \bar{5} and 10 matter. We use a combination of c…
We describe an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. Our derivation is based on a generalization of the supertwistor correspondence. Using the latter, we construct an infinite sequence of flows on the solution space of the N=4 SYM equations. The dependence of the SYM fields on the parameters along the flows can be recovered by solving the equations of the hierarchy. We embed the N=4 SYM equations in the infinite system of the hierarchy equations and show that this SYM hierarchy is associated with an infinite set of graded symmetries re…
We split the generic conformal mechanical system into a "radial" and an "angular" part, where the latter is defined as the Hamiltonian system on the orbit of the conformal group, with the Casimir function in the role of the Hamiltonian. We reduce the analysis of the constants of motion of the full system to the study of certain differential equations on this orbit. For integrable mechanical systems, the conformal invariance renders them superintegrable, yielding an additional series of conserved quantities originally found by Wojciechowski in the rational Calogero model. Finally, we show that,…
We present part of our investigations on two dimensional N=1 and N=2 superconformal field theories. As a direct generalization we consider the SU(2) coset models, in particular their renormalization group properties. A search and possible implementation of additional symmetries in related integrable models are also presented.
A unified description of the relationship between the Hamiltonian structure of a large class of integrable hierarchies of equations and W-algebras is discussed. The main result is an explicit formula showing that the former can be understood as a deformation of the latter.
We present a notion of symmetry for 1+1-dimensional integrable systems which is consistent with their group theoretic description and reproduces in special cases the known Baecklund transformation for the generalized Korteweg-deVries hierarchies. We also apply it to the relativistic invariance of the Leznov-Saveliev systems.
We address the novel structures arising in quantum and string integrable theories, as well as construct methods to obtain them and provide further analysis. Specifically, we implement the automorphic symmetries on periodic lattice systems to obtain integrable hierarchies, whose commutativity and integrable transformations induce a generating structure of integrable classes. This prescription is first applied to 2-dim and 4-dim setups, where we find the new $ \mathfrak{sl}_{2} $ sector, $ \mathfrak{su}(2) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(2) $ with superconductive modes, Generalised Hubbard type classes and…
We study additional non-isospectral symmetries of constrained (reduced) N=2 supersymmetric KP hierarchies of integrable ``soliton''-like evolution equations. These symmetries are shown to form an infinite-dimensional non-Abelian superloop superalgebra. Furthermore we study the general Darboux-Backlund (DB) transformations (including adjoint-DB and binary DB) of N=2 super- KP hierarchies preserving (most of) the additional symmetries. Also we derive the explicit form of the general DB (N=2 ``super- soliton''-like) solutions in the form of generalized Wronskian-like super-determinants.
The knowledge of {\it non usual} and sometimes {\it hidden} symmetries of (classical) integrable systems provides a very powerful setting-out of solutions of these models. Primarily, the understanding and possibly the quantisation of intriguing symmetries could give rise to deeper insight into the nature of field spectrum and correlation functions in quantum integrable models. With this perspective in mind we will propose a general framework for discovery and investigation of local, quasi-local and non-local symmetries in classical integrable systems. We will pay particular attention to the st…
The soliton spectrum (massive and massless) of a family of integrable models with local U(1) and U(1)\otimes U(1) symmetries is studied. These models represent relevant integrable deformations of SL(2,R) \otimes U(1)^{n-1} - WZW and SL(2,R) \otimes SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)^{n-2} - WZW models. Their massless solitons appears as specific topological solutions of the U(1) (or U(1)\otimes U(1)) - CFTs. The nonconformal analog of the GKO-coset formula is derived and used in the construction of the composite massive solitons of the ungauged integrable models.
Symmetries of trigonometric integrable two dimensional statistical face models are considered. The corresponding symmetry operators on the Hilbert space of states of the quantum version of these models define a weak *-Hopf algebra isomorphic to the Ocneanu double triangle algebra.
We analyze several integrable systems in zero-curvature form within the framework of $SL(2,\R)$ invariant gauge theory. In the Drienfeld-Sokolov gauge we derive a two-parameter family of nonlinear evolution equations which as special cases include the Kortweg-de Vries (KdV) and Harry Dym equations. We find residual gauge transformations which lead to infinintesimal symmetries of this family of equations. For KdV and Harry Dym equations we find an infinite hierarchy of such symmetry transformations, and we investigate their relation with local conservation laws, constants of the motion and the …
We introduce a new concept of quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras. The quantum quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras being simple but non-trivial deformations of ordinary algebras of monodromy matrices realize a new type of quantum dynamical symmetries and find an unexpected and remarkable applications in quantum inverse scattering method (QISM). We show that applying to quasi-Yang-Baxter algebras the standard procedure of QISM one obtains new wide classes of quantum models which, being integrable (i.e. having enough number of commuting integrals of motion) are only quasi-exactly solvable (i.e. admit an algebraic…
We employ appropriate realizations of the affine Hecke algebra and we recover previously known non-diagonal solutions of the reflection equation for the $U_{q}(\hat{gl_n})$ case. With the help of linear intertwining relations involving the aforementioned solutions of the reflection equation, the symmetry of the open spin chain with a particular choice of the left boundary is exhibited. The symmetry of the corresponding local Hamiltonian is also explored.
We propose a systematic treatment of symmetries of KP integrable systems, including constrained (reduced) KP models ${\sl cKP}_{R,M}$, and their multi-component (matrix) generalizations. Any such integrable hierarchy is shown to possess an additional $({\hat U}(1)\oplus{\hat {SL}}(M))_{+} \oplus ({\hat {SL}}(M+R))_{-}$ loop-algebra symmetry. Also we provide a systematic construction of the full algebra of Virasoro additional symmetries in the case of constrained KP models which requires a nontrivial modification of the known Orlov-Schulman construction for the general unconstrained KP hierarch…
We prove the existence of hidden symmetries in the general relativity theory defined by exact solutions with generic off-diagonal metrics, nonholonomic (non-integrable) constraints, and deformations of the frame and linear connection structure. A special role in characterization of such spacetimes is played by the corresponding nonholonomic generalizations of Stackel-Killing and Killing-Yano tensors. There are constructed new classes of black hole solutions and studied hidden symmetries for ellipsoidal and/or solitonic deformations of "prime" Kerr-Sen black holes into "target" off-diagonal met…
The properties of discrete nonlinear symmetries of integrable equations are investigated. These symmetries are shown to be canonical transformations. On the basis of the considered examples, it is concluded, that the densities of the conservation laws are changed under these transformations by spatial divergencies.
We conjecture the factorized scattering description for OSP(m/2n)/OSP(m-1/2n) supersphere sigma models and OSP(m/2n) Gross Neveu models. The non-unitarity of these field theories translates into a lack of `physical unitarity' of the S matrices, which are instead unitary with respect to the non-positive scalar product inherited from the orthosymplectic structure. Nevertheless, we find that formal thermodynamic Bethe ansatz calculations appear meaningful, reproduce the correct central charges, and agree with perturbative calculations. This paves the way to a more thorough study of these and othe…
This paper is devoted to the systematic study of additional (non- isospectral) symmetries of constrained (reduced) supersymmetric integrable hierarchies of KP type- the so called SKP_(R;M_B,M_F) models. The latter are supersymmetric extensions of ordinary constrained KP hierarchies which contain as special cases basic integrable systems such as (m)KdV, AKNS, Fordy-Kulish, Yajima- Oikawa etc.. As a first main result it is shown that any SKP_(R;M_B,M_F) hierarchy possesses two different mutually (anti-)commuting types of superloop superalgebra additional symmetries corresponding to the positive-…
It is well known that integrable hierarchies in (1+1) dimensions are local while the recursion operators that generate them usually contain nonlocal terms. We resolve this apparent discrepancy by providing simple and universal sufficient conditions for a (nonlocal) recursion operator in (1+1) dimensions to generate a hierarchy of local symmetries. These conditions are satisfied by virtually all known today recursion operators and are much easier to verify than those found in earlier work. We also give explicit formulas for the nonlocal parts of higher recursion operators, Poisson and symplecti…
We study two families of quantum models which have been used previously to investigate the effect of topological symmetries in one-dimensional correlated matter. Various striking similarities are observed between certain $\mathbf{Z}_n$ quantum clock models, spin chains generalizing the Ising model, and chains of non-Abelian anyons constructed from the $so(n)_2$ fusion category for odd $n$, both subject to periodic boundary conditions. In spite of the differences between these two types of quantum chains, e.g.\ their Hilbert spaces being spanned by tensor products of local spin states or fusion…
A key feature of integrable systems is that they can be solved to obtain exact analytical solutions. We show how new models can be constructed through generalisations of some well known nonlinear partial differential equations with PT-symmetries whilst preserving integrability. Subsequently, we develop new methods from well-known ones to obtain exact analytical soliton solutions for these new systems. The first PT-symmetric generalization we take are extensions to the complex and multicomplex fields. In agreement with the reality property present in PT-symmetric non-Hermitian quantum systems, …
We find an infinite set of new noncommuting conserved charges in a specific class of perturbed CFT's and present a criterion for their existence. They appear to be higher momenta of the already known commuting conserved currents. The algebra they close consists of two noncommuting$W_\infty$ algebras. We find various Virasoro subalgebras of the full symmetry algebra. It is shown on the examples of the perturbed Ising and Potts models that one of them plays an essencial role in the computation of the correlation functions of the fields of the theory.
A higher dimensional analogue of the dispersionless KP hierarchy is introduced. In addition to the two-dimensional ``phase space'' variables $(k,x)$ of the dispersionless KP hierarchy, this hierarchy has extra spatial dimensions compactified to a two (or any even) dimensional torus. Integrability of this hierarchy and the existence of an infinite dimensional of ``additional symmetries'' are ensured by an underlying twistor theoretical structure (or a nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert problem). An analogue of the tau function, whose logarithm gives the $F$ function (``free energy'' or ``prepotential'' …
Various aspects of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain with 1/r^2 exchange, and its various generalizations, are reviewed, with emphasis on its Yangian quantum group structure, and the interpretation of the model as the generalization of an ideal gas (of ``spinons'') to the case of fractional statistics. Some recent results on its dynamical correlation function are discussed, and conjectured extensions of these remarkably simple results to the $SU(n)$ model, and to the related Calogero-Sutherland model with integer coupling constant, are presented. (Talk presented at the 16th. Taniguchi Symposium, …
We consider integrable vertex models whose Boltzmann weights (R-matrices) are trigonometric solutions to the graded Yang-Baxter equation. As is well known the latter can be generically constructed from quantum affine superalgebras $U_{q}(\hat g)$. These algebras do not form a symmetry algebra of the model for generic values of the deformation parameter $q$ when periodic boundary conditions are imposed. If $q$ is evaluated at a root of unity we demonstrate that in certain commensurate sectors one can construct non-abelian subalgebras which are translation invariant and supercommute with the tra…
Generalized convolution symmetries of integrable hierarchies of KP and 2KP-Toda type multiply the Fourier coefficients of the elements of the Hilbert space $\HH= L^2(S^1)$ by a specified sequence of constants. This induces a corresponding transformation on the Hilbert space Grassmannian $\Gr_{\HH_+}(\HH)$ and hence on the Sato-Segal-Wilson τ-functions determining solutions to the KP and 2-Toda hierarchies. The corresponding action on the associated fermionic Fock space is also diagonal in the standard orthonormal base determined by occupation sites and labeled by partitions. The Plücker coordi…
As a step to understand general patterns of integrability in 1+1 quantum field theories with supergroup symmetry, we study in details the case of $OSP(1/2)$. Our results include the solutions of natural generalizations of models with ordinary group symmetry: the $UOSP(1/2)_{k}$ WZW model with a current current perturbation, the $UOSP(1/2)$ principal chiral model, and the $UOSP(1/2)\otimes UOSP(1/2)/UOSP(1/2)$ coset models perturbed by the adjoint. Graded parafermions are also discussed. A pattern peculiar to supergroups is the emergence of another class of models, whose simplest representative…
We illustrate the basic notions of {\em additional non-isospectral symmetries} and their interplay with the discrete {\em \DB transformations} of integrable systems at the instance of {\em constrained Kadomtsev-Petviashvili} (\cKP) integrable hierarchies. As a main application we present the solution of discrete multi-matrix string models in terms of Wronskian $\t$-functions of graded $SL(m,1)$ \cKP hierarchies.
The set of integrable symmetries of the nonstationary Schrödinger equation is shown to admit a natural decomposition into subsets of mutually commuting symmetries. Hierarchies of time evolutions associated with each of these subsets ultimately lead to nonlinear (possibly, operator) equations of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili I type or its higher analogues, thus demonstrating that the linear problem itself constructively determines the associated nonlinear integrable evolution equations and their hierarchies.
In this dissertation we study hidden symmetries within the framework of string theory. There are two kinds of hidden symmetries investigated in this work: the first type is associated with dynamics of quantum fields and the second type is related to integrability of strings on various backgrounds. The goals of this thesis are twofold: extension of hidden symmetries known in general relativity to stringy backgrounds in higher dimensions and construction of new integrable string theories. In the context of the first goal we study hidden symmetries of stringy backgrounds, with and without supersy…
We review various aspects of (infinite) quantum group symmetries in 2D massive quantum field theories. We discuss how these symmetries can be used to exactly solve the integrable models. A possible way for generalizing to three dimensions is shortly described.
This is mainly a brief review of some key achievements in a `hot'' area of theoretical and mathematical physics. The principal aim is to outline the basic structures underlying {\em integrable} quantum field theory models with {\em infinite-dimensional} symmetry groups which display a radically new type of {\em quantum group} symmetries. Certain particular aspects are elaborated upon with some detail: integrable systems of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili type and their reductions appearing in matrix models of strings; Hamiltonian approach to Lie-Poisson symmetries; quantum field theory approach to two-…
In this thesis, we investigate hidden symmetries for the Maldacena-Wilson loop in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, mainly focusing on its strong-coupling description as a minimal surface in $AdS_5$. In the discussion of the symmetry structure of the underlying string model, we highlight the role of the master symmetry which can be employed to construct all symmetries of the model. The algebra of these symmetries is worked out. For the concrete case of minimal surfaces in $AdS_5$, we discuss the deformation of the four-cusp solution, which provides the dual description of the four-gluon scattering …
By using a class of `anyon like' representations of permutation algebra, which pick up nontrivial phase factors while interchanging the spins of two lattice sites, we construct some integrable variants of $SU(M)$ Haldane-Shastry (HS) spin chain. Lax pairs and conserved quantities for these spin chains are also found and it is established that these models exhibit multi-parameter deformed or nonstandard variants of $Y(gl_M)$ Yangian symmetry. Moreover, by projecting the eigenstates of Dunkl operators in a suitable way, we derive a class of exact eigenfunctions for such HS like spin chain and su…
A general way to construct ladder models with certain Lie algebraic or quantum Lie algebraic symmetries is presented. These symmetric models give rise to series of integrable systems. It is shown that corresponding to these SU(2) symmetric integrable ladder models there are exactly solvable stationary discrete-time (resp. continuous-time) Markov processes with transition matrices (resp. intensity matrices) having spectra which coincide with the ones of the corresponding integrable models.
The basic concepts underlying our analysis of {\it W-algebras} as extended symmetries of integrable systems are summarized. The construction starts from the second hamiltonian structure of ``Generalized Drinfel'd-Sokolov'' hierarchies, and its correspondence with the $A_1$-embeddings is established, providing a rather simple and general scheme.
Perturbations of $WD_n$ and $W_3$ conformal theories which generalize the $(1,2)$ perturbations of conformal minimal models are shown to be integrable by counting argument. $A_{2n-1,q}^{(2)}$ and $D_{4,q}^ {(3)}$ symmetries of corresponding S-matrices are conjectured and proved by explicit construction of conserved nonlocal charges in the $WD_3$ case with the proper quantum group of symmetry.
We obtain through a Matrix Product Ansatz the exact solution of the most general inhomogeneous spin chain with nearest neighbor interaction and with $U(1)^2$ and $U(1)^3$ symmetries. These models are related to the one loop mixing matrix of the Leigh-Strassler deformed N=4 SYM theory, dual to type IIB string theory in the generalized Lunin-Maldacena backgrounds, in the sectors of two and three kinds of fields, respectively. The solutions presented here generalizes the results obtained by the author in a previous work for homogeneous spins chains with $U(1)^N$ symmetries in the sectors of N=2 a…
We introduce a transformation which allows the fermionization of operators of any one-dimensional spin-chain. This fermionization procedure is independent of any eventual integrable structure and is compatible with it. We illustrate this method on various integrable and non-integrable chains, and deduce some general results. In particular, we fermionize XXC spin-chains and study their symmetries. Fermionic realizations of certain Lie algebras and superalgebras appear naturally as symmetries of some models. We also fermionize recently obtained Hubbard models, and obtain for the first time multi…
Representation theory is shown to be incomplete in terms of enumerating all integrable limits of quantum systems. As a consequence, one can find exactly solvable Hamiltonians which have apparently strongly broken symmetry. The number of these hidden symmetries depends upon the realization of the Hamiltonian.
