In an ensemble of non-interacting Brownian particles, a finite systematic average velocity may temporarily develop, even if it is zero initially. The effect originates from a small nonlinear correction to the dissipative force, causing the equation for the first moment of velocity to couple to moments of higher order. The effect may be relevant when a complex system dissociates in a viscous medium with conservation of momentum.
Transport of Brownian particles interacting with each other via the Morse potential is investigated in the presence of an ac driving force applied locally at one end of the chain. By using numerical simulations, we find that the system can behave as a particle diode for both overdamped and underdamped cases. For low frequencies, the transport from the free end to the ac acting end is prohibited, while the transport from the ac acting end to the free end is permitted. However, the polarity of the particle diode will reverse for medium frequencies. There exists an optimal value of the well depth…
We analyze the rectified motion of a Brownian particle in a confined environment. We show the emergence of strong cooperativity between the inherent rectification of the ratchet mechanism and the entropic bias of the fluctuations caused by spatial confinement. Net particle transport may develop even in situations where separately the ratchet and the geometric restrictions do not give rise to particle motion. The combined rectification effects can lead to bidirectional transport depending on particle size, resulting in a new route for segregation. The reported mechanism can be used to control t…
We consider moving particles in media with nonlinear friction and drive them by an asymmetric dichotomic Markov process. Due to different energy dissipations, during the forward and backward stroke, we obtain a mean non-vanishing directed flow of the particles. Starting with the stationary velocity distribution, we calculate the stationary current of particles, the variance and the relative variance in dependence on the degree of nonlinearity of the friction, on the asymmetry and for different strengths of friction. In two dimensions the particle performs diffusional motion, if in addition the…
With this work we investigate an often neglected aspect of Brownian motor transport: The rôle of fluctuations of the noise-induced current and its consequences for the efficiency of rectifying noise. In doing so, we consider a Brownian inertial motor that is driven by an unbiased monochromatic, time-periodic force and thermal noise. Typically, we find that the asymptotic, time- and noise-averaged transport velocities are small, possessing rather broad velocity fluctuations. This implies a corresponding poor performance for the rectification power. However, for tailored profiles of the ratchet …
We consider a stochastic model for the directed motion of a solid object due to the rectification of asymmetric surface vibrations with Poissonian shot-noise statistics. The friction between the object and the surface is given by a piecewise-linear friction force. This models the combined effect of dynamic friction and singular dry friction. We derive an exact solution of the stationary Kolmogorov-Feller (KF) equation in the case of two-sided exponentially distributed amplitudes. The stationary density of the velocity exhibits singular features such as a discontinuity and a delta-peak singular…
We study fluctuating tilt Brownian ratchets based on fractional subdiffusion in sticky viscoelastic media characterized by a power law memory kernel. Unlike the normal diffusion case the rectification effect vanishes in the adiabatically slow modulation limit and optimizes in a driving frequency range. It is shown also that anomalous rectification effect is maximal (stochastic resonance effect) at optimal temperature and can exhibit a surprisingly good quality. Moreover, subdiffusive current can flow in the counter-intuitive direction upon a change of temperature or driving frequency. The depe…
We calculate the systematic average speed of the adiabatic piston and a thermal Brownian motor, introduced in [Van den Broeck, Kawai and Meurs, \emph{Microscopic analysis of a thermal Brownian motor}, to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett.], by an expansion of the Boltzmann equation and compare with the exact numerical solution.
We study the transport of inertial Brownian particles in steady laminar flows in the presence of two-dimensional Gaussian potentials. Through extensive numerical simulations, it is found that the transport is sensitively dependent on the external constant force and the Gaussian potential. Within tailored parameter regimes, the system exhibits a rich variety of transport behaviors. In the absence of any external driving forces, the spontaneous rectification of the particles can be manipulated by the spatial position of the Gaussian potential. Moreover, when the potential lies at the center of t…
The motion of self-propelled particles can be rectified by asymmetric or ratchet-like periodic patterns in space. Here we show that a non-zero average drift can already be induced in a periodic potential with symmetric barriers when the self-propulsion velocity is also symmetric and periodically modulated but phase-shifted against the potential. In the adiabatic limit of slow rotational diffusion we determine the mean drift analytically and discuss the influence of temperature. In the presence of asymmetric barriers modulating the self-propulsion can largely enhance the mean drift or even reve…
In this work we study the asymmetric heat flow, i.e., thermal rectification, of a one-dimensional, mass-graded system consisting of acoupled harmonic oscillator lattice (ballistic spacer) and two diffusive leads attached to the boundaries of the former with both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions. The latter enhance the rectification properties of the system and specially its independence on system size. The system presents a maximum rectification efficiency for a very precise value of the parameter that controls the coupling strength of the NNN interactions that dep…
We study the thermal rectification phenomenon in ``billiard'' systems with interacting particles. This interaction induces a local dynamical response of the billiard to an external thermodynamic gradient. To explain this dynamical effect we study the steady state of an asymmetric billiard in terms of the particle and energy reflection coefficients. This allows us to obtain expressions for the region in parameter space where large thermal rectifications are expected. Our results are confirmed by extensive numerical simulations.
We show that the recent experimental observation of the rectification of swimming bacteria in a system with an array of asymmetric barriers occurs due to the ballistic component of the bacteria trajectories introduced by the bacterial "motor." Each bacteria selects a random direction for motion and then moves in this direction for a fixed period of time before randomly changing its orientation and moving in a new direction. In the limit where the bacteria undergo only Brownian motion, rectification by the barriers does not occur. We also examine the effects of steric interactions between the b…
This work puts forward a generalization of the well-known rocking Markovian Brownian ratchets to the realm of antipersistent non-Markovian subdiffusion in viscoelastic media. A periodically forced subdiffusion in a parity-broken ratchet potential is considered within the non-Markovian generalized Langevin equation (GLE) description with a power-law memory kernel $η(t)\propto t^{-α}$ ($0<α<1$). It is shown that subdiffusive rectification currents, defined through the mean displacement and subvelocity $v_α$, $<δx(t)>\sim v_α t^α/ Γ(1+α)$, emerge asymptotically due to the breaking of the detailed…
We consider far from equilibrium heat transport in chaotic billiard chains with non-interacting charged particles in the presence of non-uniform transverse magnetic field. If half of the chain is placed in a strong magnetic field, or if the strength of the magnetic field has a large gradient along the chain, heat current is shown to be asymmetric with respect to exchange of the temperatures of the heat baths. Thermal rectification factor can be arbitrarily large for sufficiently small temperature of one of the baths.
We consider a massive inelastic piston, whose opposite faces have different coefficients of restitution, moving under the action of an infinitely dilute gas of hard disks maintained at a fixed temperature. The dynamics of the piston is Markovian and obeys a continuous Master Equation: however, the asymmetry of restitution coefficients induces a violation of detailed balance and a net drift of the piston, as in a Brownian ratchet. Numerical investigations of such non-equilibrium stationary state show that the velocity fluctuations of the piston are symmetric around the mean value only in the li…
We consider the totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) in one dimension in its maximal current phase. We show, by an exact calculation, that the non-Gaussian part of the fluctuations of density can be described in terms of the statistical properties of a Brownian excursion. Numerical simulations indicate that the description in terms of a Brownian excursion remains valid for more general one dimensional driven systems in their maximal current phase.
We extend the analysis of a thermal Brownian motor reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 090601 (2004) by C. Van den Broeck, R. Kawai, and P. Meurs to a three-dimensional configuration. We calculate the friction coefficient, diffusion coefficient, and drift velocity as a function of shape and present estimates based on physically realistic parameter values.
We present a chain-of-atoms model where heat is rectified, with different fluxes from the hot to the cold baths located at the chain boundaries when the temperature bias is reversed. The chain is homogeneous except for boundary effects and a local modification of the interactions at one site, the "impurity". The rectification mechanism is due here to the localized impurity, the only asymmetrical element of the structure, apart from the externally imposed temperature bias, and does not rely on putting in contact different materials or other known mechanisms such as grading or long-range interac…
We have realized a Brownian motor by using cold atoms in a dissipative optical lattice as a model system. In our experiment the optical potential is spatially symmetric and the time-symmetry of the system is broken by applying appropriate zero-mean ac forces. We identify a regime of rectification of forces and a regime of rectification of fluctuations, the latter corresponding to the realization of a Brownian motor.
The efficiency of energy transduction in a temporally asymmetric rocked ratchet is studied. Time asymmetry favours current in one direction and suppresses it in the opposite direction due to which large efficiency ~ 50% is readily obtained. The spatial asymmetry in the potential together with system inhomogeneity may help in further enhancing the efficiency. Fine tuning of system parameters considered leads to multiple current reversals even in the adiabatic regime.
We study the diffusive dynamics of a Brownian particle in proximity of a flat surface under non-equilibrium conditions, which are created by an anisotropic thermal environment with different temperatures being active along distinct spatial directions. By presenting the exact time-dependent solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for this problem, we demonstrate that the interplay between anisotropic diffusion and hard-core interaction with the plain wall rectifies the thermal fluctuations and induces directed particle transport parallel to the surface, without any deterministic forces being app…
Previous works have shown that time asymmetric forcing on the one hand, as well as non-Gaussian noises on the other, can separately enhance the efficiency and current of a Brownian motor. Here, we study the result of subjecting a Brownian motor to both effects simultaneously. Our results have been compared with those obtained for the Gaussian white noise regime in the adiabatic limit. We find that, although the inclusion of the time asymmetry parameter increases the efficiency value up to a certain extent, for the present case this increase is much less appreciable than in the white noise case…
We rigorously investigate the quantum dissipative dynamics of a ratchet system described by a periodic potential model based on the Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian with a biharmonic force. In this model, we use the reduced hierarchy equations of motion in the Wigner space representation. These equations represent a generalization of the Gaussian-Markovian quantum Fokker-Planck equation introduced by Tanimura and Wolynes (1991), which was formulated to study non-Markovian and non-perturbative thermal effects at finite temperature. This formalism allows us to treat both the classical limit and the …
There are many examples of driven and active matter systems containing particles that exhibit circular motion with different chiralities, such as swimming bacteria near surfaces or certain types of self-driven colloidal particles. Circular motion of passive particles can also be induced with an external rotating drive. Here we examine particles that move in circles and interact with a periodic array of asymmetric L-shaped obstacles. We find a series of dynamical phases as a function of swimming radius, including regimes where the particle motion is rectified, producing a net dc motion. The dir…
The vortex ratchet effect has been studied in Al films patterned with square arrays of submicron antidots. We have investigated the transport properties of two sets of samples: (i) asymmetrical antidots where vortices are driven by an unbiased ac current, and (ii) symmetrical antidots where in addition to the ac drive a dc bias was used. For each sample, the rectified (dc) voltage is measured as a function of drive amplitude and frequency, magnetic field, and temperature. As unambiguously shown by our data, the voltage rectification in the asymmetric antidots is induced by the intrinsic asymme…
We study the driven Brownian motion of hard rods in a one-dimensional cosine potential with an amplitude large compared to the thermal energy. In a closed system, we find surprising features of the steady-state current in dependence of the particle density. The form of the current-density relation changes greatly with the particle size and can exhibit both a local maximum and minimum. The changes are caused by an interplay of a barrier reduction, blocking and exchange symmetry effect. The latter leads to a current equal to that of non-interacting particles for a particle size commensurate with…
We show that when Brownian motion takes place in a heterogeneous medium, the presence of local forces and transport coefficients leads to deviations from a Gaussian probability distribution that make that the ratio between forward and backward probabilities depends on the nature of the host medium, on local forces and also on time. We have applied our results to two situations: diffusion in a disordered medium and diffusion in a confined system. For such scenarios we have shown that our theoretical predictions are in very good agreement with numerical results. Moreover we have shown that the d…
Based on recent work [L. Machura, M. Kostur, P. Talkner, J. Luczka, and P. Hanggi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 040601 (2007)], we extend the study of inertial Brownian motors to the case of an asymmetric potential. It is found that some transport phenomena appear in the presence of an asymmetric potential. Within tailored parameter regimes, there exists two optimal values of the load at which the mean velocity takes its maximum, which means that a load can facilitate the transport in the two parameter regimes. In addition, the phenomenon of multiple current reversals can be observed when the load is …
Human-created engines and evolutionarily optimized molecular motors exhibit sophisticated design in order to harvest chemical or thermal energy for generating unidirectional motion. The complexity of these motors makes their random emergence unlikely. Molecules capable of locomotion, however, seem to be essential to the creation of the first self-replicator and initiation of Darwinian evolution, posing a question of the physical mechanism that can facilitate emergence of directed motion in an isotropic environment. Here we show a universal thermodynamic mechanism for spontaneous emergence of m…
An asymmetric object, undergoing dissipative collisions with surrounding particles, acquires a nonzero average velocity. The latter is calculated analytically by an expansion of the Boltzmann equation and the result is compared with Monte Carlo simulations.
We study numerically the directed motion of vortices (antivortices) under an applied ac bias in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays (JJA) with an asymmetrically modulated periodic vortex pinning potential. We find that the ratchet effect in large 2D JJA can be obtained using the RSJ model for the overdamped vortex dynamics. The rectification effect shows a strong dependence on vortex density as well as an inversion of the vortex flow direction with the ac amplitude, for a wide range of high magnetic field around f=1/2 (f being the vortex density). Our results are in good agreement with v…
Individual movements of a rod-like self-propelled particle on a flat substrate are quantified. Biological systems that fit into this description may be the Gram-negative delta-proteobacterium Myxococcus xanthus, Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, and Mitochondria. There are also non-living analogues such as vibrated polar granulates and self-driven anisotropic colloidal particles. For that we study the Brownian motion of an asymmetric rod-like rigid particle self-propelled at a fixed speed along its long axis in two dimensions. The motion of such a particle in a uniform external potenti…
We consider the two dimensional motion of a particle into a confining potential, subjected to Brownian forces, associated with two different temperatures on the orthogonal directions. Exact solutions are obtained for an asymmetric harmonic potential in the overdamped and underdamped regimes, whereas perturbative approaches are used for more general potentials. The resulting non equilibrium stationary state is characterized with a nonzero orthoradial mean current, corresponding to a global rotation of the particle around the center. The rotation is due to two symmetry breaking: two different te…
Single-file Brownian motion in periodic structures is an important process in nature and technology, which becomes increasingly amenable for experimental investigation under controlled conditions. To explore and understand generic features of this motion, the Brownian asymmetric simple exclusion process (BASEP) was recently introduced. The BASEP refers to diffusion models, where hard spheres are driven by a constant drag force through a periodic potential. Here, we derive general properties of the rich collective dynamics in the BASEP. Average currents in the steady state change dramatically w…
The rectification of noise into directed movement or useful energy is utilized by many different systems. The peculiar nature of the energy source and conceptual differences between such Brownian motor systems makes a characterization of the performance far from straightforward. In this work, where the Brownian motor consists of atoms interacting with dissipative optical lattices, we adopt existing theory and present experimental measurements for both the efficiency and the transport coherence. We achieve up to 0.3% for the efficiency and 0.01 for the Péclet number.
We propose a stochastic process wherein molecular transport is mediated by asymmetric nucleation of domains on a one-dimensional substrate. Track-driven mechanisms of molecular transport arise in biophysical applications such as Holliday junction positioning and collagenase processivity. In contrast to molecular motors that hydrolyze nucleotide triphosphates and undergo a local molecular conformational change, we show that asymmetric nucleation of hydrolysis waves on a track can also result in directed motion of an attached particle. Asymmetrically cooperative kinetics between ``hydrolyzed'' a…
We numerically demonstrate heat rectification for linear chains of ions in trap lattices with graded trapping frequencies, in contact with thermal baths implemented by optical molasses. To calculate the local temperatures and heat currents we find the stationary state by solving a system of algebraic equations. This approach is much faster than the usual method that integrates the dynamical equations of the system and averages over noise realizations.
We study a continuous-space version of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP), consisting of interacting Brownian particles subject to a driving force in a periodic external potential. Particles are inserted at the leftmost site at rate $α$, hop to the right at unit rate, and are removed at the rightmost site at rate $β$. Our study is motivated by recent experiments on colloidal particles in optical tweezer arrays. The external potential is of the form generated by such an array. Particles spend most of the time near potential minima, approximating the situation in the lattice…
The rectification of a single file of attracting particles subjected to a low frequency ac drive is proposed as a working mechanism for particle shuttling in an asymmetric narrow channel. Increasing the particle attraction results in the file condensing, as signalled by the dramatic enhancement of the net particle current. Magnitude and direction of the current become extremely sensitive to the actual size of the condensate, which can then be made to shuttle between two docking stations, transporting particles in one direction, with an efficiency much larger than conventional diffusive models …
The construction of efficient thermal engines operating at finite times constitutes a fundamental and timely topic in nonequilibrium thermodynamics. We introduce a strategy for optimizing the performance of Brownian engines, based on a collisional approach for unequal interaction times between the system and thermal reservoirs. General (and exact) expressions for thermodynamic properties and their optimized values are obtained, irrespective of the driving forces, asymmetry, the temperatures of reservoirs and protocol to be maximized. Distinct routes for the engine optimization, including maxim…
Diffusion and rectification of Brownian particles powered by a rotating wheel are numerically investigated in a two-dimensional channel. The nonequilibrium driving comes from the rotating wheel, which can break thermodynamical equilibrium and induce the directed transport in an asymmetric potential. It is found that the direction of the transport along the potential is determined by the asymmetry of the potential and the position of the wheel. The average velocity is a peaked function of the angular speed (or the diffusion coefficient) and the position of the peak shifts to large angular speed…
