The motion of self-propelled particles can be rectified by asymmetric or ratchet-like periodic patterns in space. Here we show that a non-zero average drift can already be induced in a periodic potential with symmetric barriers when the self-propulsion velocity is also symmetric and periodically modulated but phase-shifted against the potential. In the adiabatic limit of slow rotational diffusion we determine the mean drift analytically and discuss the influence of temperature. In the presence of asymmetric barriers modulating the self-propulsion can largely enhance the mean drift or even reverse it.
We study by simulation a mixture of active (run-and-tumble) and passive (Brownian) particles with repulsive exclusion interactions in one dimension, subject to a ratchet (smoothed sawtooth) potential. Such a potential is known to rectify active particles at one-body level, creating a net current in the `easy direction'. This is the direction in which one encounters the lower maximum force en route to the top of a potential barrier. The exclusion constraint results in single-file motion, so the mean velocities of active and passive particles are identical; we study the effects of activity level…
We study the noise-driven escape of active Brownian particles (ABPs) and run-and-tumble particles (RTPs) from confining potentials. In the small noise limit, we provide an exact expression for the escape rate in term of a variational problem in any dimension. For RTPs in one dimension, we obtain an explicit solution, including the first sub-leading correction. In two dimensions we solve the escape from a quadratic well for both RTPs and ABPs. In contrast to the equilibrium problem we find that the escape rate depends explicitly on the full shape of the potential barrier, and not only on its he…
We study a system of non-interacting active particles, propelled by colored noises, characterized by an activity time $τ$, and confined by a double-well potential. A straightforward application of this system is the problem of barrier crossing of active particles, which has been studied only in the limit of small activity. When $τ$ is sufficiently large, equilibrium-like approximations break down in the barrier crossing region. In the model under investigation, it emerges a sort of "negative temperature" region, and numerical simulations confirm the presence of non-convex local velocity distri…
We numerically study the escape kinetics of a self-propelled Janus particle, carrying a cargo, from a meta-stable state. We assume that the cargo is attached to the Janus particle by a flexible harmonic spring. We take into account the effect of velocity field, created in the fluid due to movements of dimer's components, by considering space-dependent diffusion tensor (Oseen tensor). Our simulation results show that the synchronization between barrier crossing events and rotational relaxation process can enhance escape rate to a large extent. Also, the load carrying capability of a Janus parti…
