We give a bound on the spectral radius of subgraphs of regular graphs with given order and diameter. We give a lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue of a nonbipartite regular graph of given order and diameter.
We improve the estimates of the subgraph probabilities in a random regular graph. Using the improved results, we further improve the limiting distribution of the number of triangles in random regular graphs.
Given feasible strongly regular graph parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$ and a non-negative integer $d$, we determine upper and lower bounds on the order of a $d$-regular induced subgraph of any strongly regular graph with parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$. Our new bounds are at least as good as the bounds on the order of a $d$-regular induced subgraph of a $k$-regular graph determined by Haemers. Further, we prove that for each non-negative integer $d$, our new upper bound improves on Haemers' upper bound for infinitely many strongly regular graphs.
In this paper we completely resolve the well-known problem of Erdős and Sauer from 1975 which asks for the maximum number of edges an $n$-vertex graph can have without containing a $k$-regular subgraph, for some fixed integer $k\geq 3$. We prove that any $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $C_k\log \log n$ contains a $k$-regular subgraph. This matches the lower bound of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi and substantially improves an old result of Pyber, who showed that average degree at least $C_k\log n$ is enough. Our method can also be used to settle asymptotically a problem raised by Erdő…
Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which do not contain fixed forbidden subgraphs. Similarly, spectral Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize (signless Laplacian) spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. In this paper, we first present a stability result for $k\cdot P_3$ in terms of the number of edges and then determine all extremal graphs maximizing the signless Laplacian spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain a fixed linear forest with at most two odd paths or $k\cdot P_3$ as a subgraph, respe…
Let $G$ be a graph of size $m$ and $ρ(G)$ be the spectral radius of its adjacency matrix. A graph is said to be $F$-free if it does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a $K_{2,r+1}$-free non-star graph with $m\geq (4r+2)^2+1$, then $ρ(G)\leq ρ(S_m^1)$, with equality if and only if $G\cong S_m^1$. Recently, Li, Sun and Wei showed that for any $θ_{1,2,3}$-free graph of size $m\geq 8$, $ρ(G)\leq \frac{1+\sqrt{4m-3}}{2}$, with equality if and only if $G\cong S_{\frac{m+3}{2},2}$. However, this bound is not attainable when $m$ is even. We proved that if …
We prove that the maximum number of edges in a 3-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no 2-regular subhypergraph is $n^{1+o(1)}$. This resolves a conjecture of Dellamonica, Haxell, Luczak, Mubayi, Nagle, Person, Rödl, Schacht and Verstraëte. We use this result to show that the maximum number of edges in a $3$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no immersion of a closed surface is $n^{2+o(1)}$. Furthermore, we present results on the maximum number of edges in $k$-uniform linear hypergraphs containing no $r$-regular subhypergraph.
If $G$ is a graph and $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$, we say that an edge-coloring of $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-polychromatic if every graph from $\mathcal{H}$ gets all colors present in $G$ on its edges. The $\mathcal{H}$-polychromatic number of $G$, denoted $\operatorname{poly}_\mathcal{H} (G)$, is the largest number of colors in an $\mathcal{H}$-polychromatic coloring. In this paper we determine $\operatorname{poly}_\mathcal{H} (G)$ exactly when $G$ is a complete graph on $n$ vertices, $q$ is a fixed nonnegative integer, and $\mathcal{H}$ is one of three families: the family of all m…
A wheel graph is a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle. A graph is called wheel-free if it does not contain any wheel graph as a subgraph. In 2010, Nikiforov proposed a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem: what is the maximum spectral radius of a graph of order $n$ that does not contain subgraphs of particular kind. In this paper, we study the Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem for wheel-free graphs, and we determine the maximum (signless Laplacian) spectral radius of a wheel-free graph of order $n$. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal graphs.
In this paper we disprove a conjecture of Lidický and Murphy about the number of copies of a given graph in a $K_r$-free graph and give an alternative general conjecture. We also prove an asymptotically tight bound on the number of copies of any bipartite graph of radius at most $2$ in a triangle-free graph.
We consider the following random model for edge-colored graphs. A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is fixed, and a random subgraph $G_p$ is chosen by letting each edge of $G$ remain independently with probability $p$. Then, each edge of $G_p$ is colored uniformly at random from the set $[n-1]$. A result of Frieze and McKay (Random Structures and Algorithms, 1994) implies that when $G = K_n$ and $p = (2 + ε) \frac{\log n}{n}$ for some constant $ε> 0$, then $G_p$ almost surely contains a rainbow spanning tree. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a $d$-regular $Ω(n)$-edge-connected graph, then when $p…
Consider the random process in which the edges of a graph $G$ are added one by one in a random order. A classical result states that if $G$ is the complete graph $K_{2n}$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, then typically a perfect matching appears at the moment at which the last isolated vertex disappears. We extend this result to arbitrary $k$-regular bipartite graphs $G$ on $2n$ vertices for all $k = ω\left( \frac{n}{\log^{1/3} n} \right)$. Surprisingly, this is not the case for smaller values of $k$. Using a construction due to Goel, Kapralov and Khanna, we show that there exist bip…
We study optimal minimum degree conditions when an $n$-vertex graph $G$ contains an $r$-regular $r$-connected subgraph. We prove for $r$ fixed and $n$ large the condition to be $δ(G) \ge \frac{n+r-2}{2}$ when $nr \equiv 0 \pmod 2$. This answers a question of M.~Kriesell.
The Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture says that for every forest $H$ and every integer $k$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain a clique on $k$ vertices then it has bounded chromatic number. (A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain an induced copy of $H$.) Kierstead and Penrice proved it for trees of radius at most two, but otherwise the conjecture is known only for a few simple types of forest. More is known if we exclude a complete bipartite subgraph instead of a clique: Rödl showed that, for every forest $H$, if $G$ is $H$-free and does not contain $K_{t,t}$ as a subgraph then it has bounded…
Let $ρ(G)$ be the spectral radius of a graph $G$ with $m$ edges. Let $S_{m-k+1}^{k}$ be the graph obtained from $K_{1,m-k}$ by adding $k$ disjoint edges within its independent set. Nosal's theorem states that if $ρ(G)>\sqrt{m}$, then $G$ contains a triangle. Zhai and Shu showed that any non-bipartite graph $G$ with $m\geq26$ and $ρ(G)\geqρ(S_{m}^{1})>\sqrt{m-1}$ contains a quadrilateral unless $G\cong S_{m}^{1}$ [M.Q. Zhai, J.L. Shu, Discrete Math. 345 (2022) 112630]. Wang proved that if $ρ(G)\geq\sqrt{m-1}$ for a graph $G$ with size $m\geq27$, then $G$ contains a quadrilateral unless $G$ is o…
