J. Angulo and J. F. Montenegro (J. Differential Equations 174 (2001), no. 1, 181-199) published a paper about nonlinear stability of solitary waves for an interaction system between a long internal wave and a short surface wave in a two layer fluid considering that the fluid depth of the lower layer is sufficiently large in comparison with the wavelength of the internal wave. In this note, we show that in a critical step during the proof of Lemma 2.4 in the above mentioned paper, there is a claim used by the authors which fails to be true. Lemma 2.4 is crucial for the proof of Lemma 2.7, and for the proof of stability in Theorem 2.1 in the paper before mentioned.
In this paper we study a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations which admit families of small solitary wave solutions. We consider solutions which are small in the energy space $H^1$, and decompose them into solitary wave and dispersive wave components. The goal is to establish the asymptotic stability of the solitary wave and the asymptotic completeness of the dispersive wave. That is, we show that as $t \to \infty$, the solitary wave component converges to a fixed solitary wave, and the dispersive component converges to a solution of the free Schrödinger equation.
We consider linear instability of solitary waves of several classes of dispersive long wave models. They include generalizations of KDV, BBM, regularized Boussinesq equations, with general dispersive operators and nonlinear terms. We obtain criteria for the existence of exponentially growing solutions to the linearized problem. The novelty is that we dealt with models with nonlocal dispersive terms, for which the spectra problem is out of reach by the Evans function technique. For the proof, we reduce the linearized problem to study a family of nonlocal operators, which are closely related to …
We show existence of solitary-wave solutions to the equation \begin{equation*} u_t+ (Lu - n(u))_x = 0\,, \end{equation*} for weak assumptions on the dispersion $L$ and the nonlinearity $n$. The symbol $m$ of the Fourier multiplier $L$ is allowed to be of low positive order ($s > 0$), while $n$ need only be locally Lipschitz and asymptotically homogeneous at zero. We shall discover such solutions in Sobolev spaces contained in $H^{1+s}$.
We present a method to prove nonlinear instability of solitary waves in dispersive models. Two examples are analyzed: we prove the nonlinear long time instability of the KdV solitary wave (with respect to periodic transverse perturbations) under a KP-I flow and the transverse nonlinear instability of solitary waves for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
We prove existence of small-amplitude modulated solitary waves for the full-dispersion Kadomtsev--Petviashvilii (FDKP) equation with weak surface tension. The resulting waves are small-order perturbations of scaled, translated and frequency-shifted solutions of a Davey--Stewartson (DS) type equation. The construction is variational and relies upon a series of reductive steps which transform the FDKP functional to a perturbed scaling of the DS functional, for which least-energy ground states are found. We also establish a convergence result showing that scalings of FDKP solitary waves converge …
The long-time asymptotics is analyzed for finite energy solutions of the 1D Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonlinear oscillator. The coupled system is invariant with respect to the phase rotation group U(1). For initial states close to a solitary wave, the solution converges to a sum of another solitary wave and dispersive wave which is a solution to the free Schrödinger equation. The proofs use the strategy of Buslaev-Perelman: the linerization of the dynamics on the solitary manifold, the symplectic orthogonal projection and method of majorants.
Recently, two different proofs for large and intermediate-size solitary waves of the nonlocally dispersive Whitham equation have been presented, using either global bifurcation theory or the limit of waves of large period. We give here a different approach by maximising directly the dispersive part of the energy functional, while keeping the remaining nonlinear terms fixed with an Orlicz-space constraint. This method is to our knowledge new in the setting of water waves. The constructed solutions are bell-shaped in the sense that they are even, one-sided monotone, and attain their maximum at t…
In this paper we consider the decay rate of solitary-wave solutions to some classes of non-linear and non-local dispersive equations, including for example the Whitham equation and a Whitham--Boussinesq system. The dispersive term is represented by a Fourier multiplier operator that has a real analytic symbol, and we show that all supercritical solitary-wave solutions decay exponentially, and moreover provide the exact decay rate, which in general will depend on the speed of the wave. We also prove that solitary waves have only one crest and are symmetric for some class of equations.
We show existence of small solitary and periodic traveling-wave solutions in Sobolev spaces ${\mathrm{H}^s}$, ${ s > 0 }$, to a class of nonlinear, dispersive evolution equations of the form \begin{equation*} u_t + \left(Lu+ n(u)\right)_x = 0, \end{equation*} where the dispersion ${L}$ is a negative-order Fourier multiplier whose symbol is of KdV type at low frequencies and has integrable Fourier inverse ${ K }$ and the nonlinearity ${n}$ is inhomogeneous, locally Lipschitz and of superlinear growth at the origin. This generalises earlier work by Ehrnström, Groves & Wahlén on a class of equati…
We review recent results on global attractors of U(1)-invariant dispersive Hamiltonian systems. We study several models based on the Klein-Gordon equation and sketch the proof that in these models, under certain generic assumptions, the weak global attractor is represented by the set of all solitary waves. In general, the attractors may also contain multifrequency solitary waves; we give examples of systems which contain such solutions.
We improve the decay argument by [Bona and Li, J. Math. Pures Appl., 1997] for solitary waves of general dispersive equations and illustrate it in the proof for the exponential decay of solitary waves to steady Degasperis-Procesi equation in the nonlocal formulation. In addition, we give a method which confirms the symmetry of solitary waves of the maximum height. Finally, we discover how the symmetric structure is connected to the steady structure of solutions to the Degasperis-Procesi equation, and give a more intuitive proof for symmetric solutions to be traveling waves. The improved argume…
To understand an oft-observed but poorly understood phenomenon in which a solitary wave in a dispersive equation slowly deteriorates due to a persistent emission of radiation (i.e. a ``radiating solitary wave''), we propose a bare-bones model which captures many essential features and which we are capable of analyzing completely by way of the Laplace transform. We find that wave amplitude decreases at an exponential rate but with a decay constant that is (in many cases) small beyond all orders of the frequency.
The long-time asymptotics is analyzed for finite energy solutions of the 1D discrete Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonlinear oscillator. The coupled system is invariant with respect to the phase rotation group. For initial states close to a solitary wave, the solution converges to a sum of another solitary wave and dispersive wave which is a solution to the free Schrödinger equation. The proofs use the strategy of Buslaev-Perelman: the linerization of the dynamics on the solitary manifold, the symplectic orthogonal projection, method of majorants, etc.
Studied here is the generalized Benjamin-Ono--Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation $u_t+u^pu_x+α\mathscr{H}u_{xx}+\varepsilon u_{xyy}=0, \quad (x,y)\in\rr^2\!,\;\;t\in \rr^+\!$ in two space dimensions. Here, $\mathscr{H}$ is the Hilbert transform and subscripts denote partial differentiation. We classify when equation (1) possesses solitary-wave solutions in terms of the signs of the constants $α$ and $\varepsilon$ appearing in the dispersive terms and the strength of the nonlinearity. Regularity and decay properties of these solitary wave are determined and their stability is studied.
The focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation possesses special non-dispersive solitary type solutions, solitons. Under certain spectral assumptions we show existence and asymptotic stability of solutions with the asymptoic profile (as time goes to infinity) of a linear combination of N non-colliding solitons.
We prove existence and stability results for a two-parameter family of solitary-wave solutions to a system in which an equation of nonlinear Schrödinger type is coupled to an equation of Korteweg-de Vries type. Such systems model interactions between short and long dispersive waves. The results extend earlier results of Angulo, Albert and Angulo, and Chen. Our proof involves the characterization of solitary-wave solutions as minimizers of an energy functional subject to two constraints. To establish the precompactness of minimizing sequences via concentrated compactness, we establish the sub-a…
In this short note, we review recent results concerning the long time dynamics of large data solutions to several dispersive models. Starting with the KdV case and ending with the KP models, we review the literature and present new results where virial estimates allow one to prove local energy decay in different regions of space where solitons, lumps or solitary waves are not present.
In this paper we investigate the orbital stability of solitary waves to the (generalized) Kawahara equation (gKW) which is a fifth order dispersive equation. For some values of the power of the nonlinearity, we prove the orbital stability in the energy space H 2 (R) of two branches of even solitary waves of gKW by combining the well-known spectral method introduced by Benjamin [3] with continuity arguments. We construct the first family of even solitons by applying the implicit function theorem in the neighborhood of the explicit solitons of gKW found by Dey et al. [8]. The second family consi…
This paper investigates the stability of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary Euler equations with a submerged point vortex. We prove that sufficiently small-amplitude waves with small enough vortex strength are conditionally orbitally stable. In the process of obtaining this result, we develop a quite general stability/instability theory for bound state solutions of a large class of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems in the presence of symmetry. This is in the spirit of the seminal work of Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss, but with hypotheses that are relaxed in a number of ways …
In this paper we prove the well-posedness issues of the associated initial value problem, the existence of nontrivial solutions with prescribed $L^2$-norm, and the stability of associated solitary waves for two classes of coupled nonlinear dispersive equations. The first problem here describes the nonlinear interaction between two Schrödinger type short waves and a generalized Korteweg-de Vries type long wave and the second problem describes the nonlinear interaction of two generalized Korteweg-de Vries type long waves with a common Schrödinger type short wave. The results here extend many of …
The present paper deals with sufficient conditions for orbital stability of periodic waves of a general class of evolution equations supporting nonlinear dispersive waves. Our method can be seen as an extension to spatially periodic waves of the theory of solitary waves recently developed in \cite{st}. Firstly, our main result do not depend on the parametrization of the periodic wave itself. Secondly, motived by the well known orbital stability criterion for solitary waves, we show that the same criterion holds for periodic waves. In addition, we show that the positiveness of the principal ent…
We consider the nonlinear magnetic Schrödinger equation for $ u: \mathbb{R}^3 \times \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C} $, \[ iu_t = (i \nabla + A)^2 u + V u + g(u), u(x,0) = u_0(x),\] where $ A :\mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{R}^3 $ is the magnetic potential, $ V : \mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{R} $ is the electric potential, and $ g = \pm | u |^2 u $ is the nonlinear term. We show that under suitable assumptions on the electric and magnetic potentials, if the initial data is small enough in $ H^1 $, then the solution of the above equation decomposes uniquely into a standing wave part, which converges as $t \to …
Consider a bounded solution of the focusing, energy-critical wave equation that does not scatter to a linear solution. We prove that this solution converges in some weak sense, along a sequence of times and up to scaling and space translation, to a sum of solitary waves. This result is a consequence of a new general compactness/rigidity argument based on profile decomposition. We also give an application of this method to the energy-critical Schrödinger equation.
The global attraction is established for all finite energy solutions to a model $\mathbf{U}(1)$-invariant nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension coupled to a finite number of nonlinear oscillators: We prove that {\it each finite energy solution} converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to the set of all ``nonlinear eigenfunctions'' of the form $ϕ(x)e\sp{-iωt}$ if all oscillators are strictly nonlinear, and the distances between all neighboring oscillators are sufficiently small. The {\it global attraction} is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum…
For the mass critical generalized KdV equation $\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + u^5)=0$ on $\mathbb R$, we construct a full family of flattening solitary wave solutions. Let $Q$ be the unique even positive solution of $Q''+Q^5=Q$. For any $ν\in (0,\frac 13)$, there exist global (for $t\geq 0$) solutions of the equation with the asymptotic behavior \begin{equation*} u(t,x)= t^{-\fracν2} Q\left(t^{-ν} (x-x(t))\right)+w(t,x) \end{equation*} where, for some $c>0$, \begin{equation*} x(t)\sim c t^{1-2ν} \quad \mbox{and}\quad \|w(t)\|_{H^1(x>\frac 12 x(t))} \to 0\quad \mbox{as $t\to +\inf…
Motivated by the ongoing study of dispersive shock waves in non integrable systems, we propose and analyze a set of wave parameters for periodic waves of a large class of Hamiltonian partial differential systems -- including the generalized Korteweg de Vries equations and the Euler-Korteweg systems -- that are well-behaved in both the small amplitude and small wavelength limits. We use this parametrization to determine fine asymptotic properties of the associated modulation systems, including detailed descriptions of eigenmodes. As a consequence, in the solitary wave limit we prove that modula…
This article describes the use of algebraic methods in a phase plane analysis of ordinary differential equations. The method is illustrated by the study of capillary-gravity steady surface waves propagating in shallow water. We consider the (fully nonlinear, weakly dispersive) Serre-Green-Naghdi equations with surface tension, because it provides a tractable model that, in the same time, is not too simple so the interest of the method can be emphasised. In particular, we analyse a special class of solutions, the solitary waves, which play an important role in many fields of Physics. In capilla…
Consider the Hamiltonian $abcd$ system in one dimension, with data posed in the energy space $H^1\times H^1$. This model, introduced by Bona, Chen and Saut, is a well-known physical generalization of the classical Boussinesq equations. The Hamiltonian case corresponds to the regime where $a,c<0$ and $b=d>0$. Under this regime, small solutions in the energy space are globally defined. A first proof of decay for this $2\times 2$ system was given by the two authors and Poblete and Pozo, in a strongly dispersive regime, i.e. under essentially the conditions \[ b=d > \frac29, \quad a,c<-\frac1{18}.…
We examine a degenerate, dispersive, nonlinear wave equation related to the evolution of partially molten rock in dimensions two and higher. This simplified model, for a scalar field capturing the melt fraction by volume, has been studied by direct numerical simulation where it has been observed to develop stable solitary waves. In this work, we prove local in time well-posedness results for the time dependent equation, on both the whole space and the torus, for dimensions two and higher. We also prove the existence of the solitary wave solutions in dimensions two and higher.

We study a class of discrete focusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations (DNLS) with general nonlocal interactions. We prove the existence of onsite and offsite discrete solitary waves, which bifurcate from the trivial solution at the endpoint frequency of the continuous spectrum of linear dispersive waves. We also prove exponential smallness, in the frequency-distance to the bifurcation point, of the Peierls-Nabarro energy barrier (PNB), as measured by the difference in Hamiltonian or mass functionals evaluated on the onsite and offsite states. These results extend those of the authors for the…
Choosing $κ$ (horizontal ordinate of the saddle point associated to the homoclinic orbit) as bifurcation parameter, bifurcations of the travelling wave solutions is studied in a perturbed $(1 + 1)$-dimensional dispersive long wave equation. The solitary wave solution exists at a suitable wave speed $c$ for the bifurcation parameter $κ\in (0,1-\frac{\sqrt3}{3})\cup (1+\frac{\sqrt3}{3},2)$, while the kink and anti-kink wave solutions exist at a unique wave speed $c^*=\sqrt{15}/3$ for $κ=0$ or $κ=2$. The methods are based on the geometric singular perturbation (GSP, for short) approach, Melnikov …
The Serre-Green-Naghdi system is a coupled, fully nonlinear system of dispersive evolution equations which approximates the full water wave problem. The system is an extension of the well known shallow-water system to the situation where the waves are long, but not so long that dispersive effects can be neglected. In the current work, the focus is on deriving mass, momentum and energy densities and fluxes associated with the Serre-Green-Naghdi system. These quantities arise from imposing balance equations of the same asymptotic order as the evolution equations. In the case of an even bed, the …
We consider unique continuation properties of solutions to a family of evolution equations. Our interest is mainly on nonlinear non-local models. This class contains the Benjamin-Ono, the Intermediate Long Wave, the Camassa-Holm, the dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono and non-local Schrödinger equations as well as their generalizations. We shall review, discuss, expand, and comment on several results. In addition, we shall state some open questions concerning these results and their techniques.
In this article we discuss a new Hamiltonian PDE arising from a class of equations appearing in the study of magma, partially molten rock, in the Earth's interior. Under physically justifiable simplifications, a scalar, nonlinear, degenerate, dispersive wave equation may be derived to describe the evolution of $ϕ$, the fraction of molten rock by volume, in the Earth. These equations have two power nonlinearities which specify the constitutive realitions for bulk viscosity and permeability in terms of $ϕ$. Previously, they have been shown to admit solitary wave solutions. For a particular relat…
We consider asymptotic stability of a small solitary wave to supercritical 1-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations $$ iu_t+u_{xx}=Vu\pm |u|^{p-1}u \quad\text{for $(x,t)\in\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}$,}$$ in the energy class. This problem was studied by Gustafson-Nakanishi-Tsai \cite{GNT} in the 3-dimensional case using the endpoint Strichartz estimate. To prove asymptotic stability of solitary waves, we need to show that a dispersive part $v(t,x)$ of a solution belongs to $L^2_t(0,\infty;X)$ for some space $X$. In the 1-dimensional case, this property does not follow from the Strichartz e…
We consider a higher-dimensional version of the Benjamin-Ono (HBO) equation in the 2D setting: $u_t- \mathcal{R}_1 Δu + \frac{1}{2}(u^2)_x=0, (x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^2$, which is $L^2$-critical, and investigate properties of solutions both analytically and numerically. For a generalized equation (fractional 2D gKdV) after deriving the Pohozaev identities, we obtain non-existence conditions for solitary wave solutions, then prove uniform bounds in the energy space or conditional global existence, and investigate the radiation region, a specific wedge in the negative $x$-direction. We then introduc…
For the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in R 1+d , we prove the existence of multi-solitary waves made of any number N of decoupled bound states. This extends the work of C{ô}te and Mu{ñ}oz (Forum Math. Sigma 2 (2014)) which was restricted to ground states, as were most previous similar results for other nonlinear dispersive and wave models.
