We report the detection of two planetary mass companions to the solar-type star HD 155358. The two planets have orbital periods of 195.0 and 530.3 days, with eccentricities of 0.11 and 0.18. The minimum masses for these planets are 0.89 and 0.50 Jupiter masses respectively. The orbits are close enough to each other, and the planets are sufficiently massive, that the planets are gravitationally interacting with each other, with their eccentricities and arguments of periastron varying with periods of 2300--2700 years. While large uncertainties remain in the orbital eccentricities, our orbital integration calculations indicate that our derived orbits would be dynamically stable for at least 10^8 years. With a metallicity [Fe/H] of -0.68, HD 155358 is tied with the K1III giant planet host star HD 47536 for the lowest metallicity of any planet host star yet found. Thus, a star with only 21% of the heavy-element content of our Sun was still able to form a system of at least two Jovian-mass planets and have their orbits evolve to semi-major axes of 0.6-1.2 AU.
Recent observations show a clear correlation between the probability of hosting a planet and the metallicity of the parent star. Since radial velocity surveys are biased, however, towards detecting planets with short orbital periods, the probability-metallicity correlation could merely reflect a dependence of migration rates on metallicity. We investigated the possibility, but find no basis to suggest that the migration process is sensitive to the metallicity. The indication is, therefore, that a higher metallicity results in a higher probability for planet formation.
The mass of the outer convective zone in FGK main sequence stars decreases dramatically with stellar mass. Therefore, any contamination of a star's atmosphere by accreted planetary material should affect hotter stars much more than cool stars. If recent suggestions that high metal abundances in stars with planets are caused by planetesimal accretion are correct, then metallicity enhancements in earlier-type stars with planets should be very pronounced. No such trend is seen, however.
The O/H metallicity distribution of different samples of planetary nebulae in the bulge of the Milky Way and M31 are compared. O/H abundances are converted into [Fe/H] metallicity by the use of theoretical [O/Fe] x [Fe/H] relationships both for the bulge and the solar neighbourhood. It is found that these relationships imply an offset of [Fe/H] abundances by a factor up to 0.5 dex for bulge nebulae. Systematic errors in the O/H abundances as suggested by some recent recombination line work, ON cycling and statistical uncertainties are unable to explain the observed offset, suggesting that the …
The results of the N/O abundance determination in a sample of low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies based on new spectroscopic observations with large telescopes (Keck, VLT, MMT, 4m KPNO) are presented. We show that the N/O abundance ratio is constant at lowest metallicities < Zsun/20, confirming previous findings and strongly supporting the origin of nitrogen as a primary element.
We examine the relationship between the frequency of close companions (stellar and planetary companions with orbital periods < 5 years) and the metallicity of their Sun-like (~ FGK) hosts. We confirm and quantify a ~4 sigma positive correlation between host metallicity and planetary companions. We find little or no dependence on spectral type or distance in this correlation. In contrast to the metallicity dependence of planetary companions, stellar companions tend to be more abundant around low metallicity hosts. At the ~2 sigma level we find an anti-correlation between host metallicity and th…
We present 4-meter Kitt Peak telescope and 6.5-meter MMT spectrophotometry of the extremely low-metallicity galaxy SBS 0335-052W, the western companion of the blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052E. These observations have been combined with published 10-meter Keck data to derive for the brightest region of SBS 0335-052W an oxygen abundance 12+logO/H=7.12+/-0.03. This makes SBS 0335-052W the lowest metallicity star-forming galaxy known in the local universe. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we fit the spectral energy distribution of SBS 0335-052W to derive the age of the oldest stars contributi…
We report the results of spectroscopic observations, obtained with the GEMINI Multi-Object Spectrograph, of 8 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy NGC147, a companion of M31. The physico-chemical properties of the six brightest PNe (Corradi et al. 2005) were derived using both the empirical ICF method and photoionization modelling with CLOUDY. Different aspects of the evolution of low and intermediate mass stars in a low-metallicity environment are analysed using relationships between chemical abundances. In addition, certain features of the chemical evolution of NGC14…
The virial mass ($M_{\rm vir}$)-metallicity relation among the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is examined. Hirashita, Takeuchi, & Tamura showed that the dSphs can be divided into two distinct classes with respect to the relation between their virial masses and luminosities: low-mass ($M_{\rm vir} \la 10^8 M_\odot$) and high-mass ($M_{\rm vir} \ga 10^8 M_\odot$) groups. We see that both the mass-metallicity and the mass-luminosity relations of the high-mass dSphs are understood as a low-mass extension of giant ellipticals. On the contrary, we find that the classical galactic-wind…
The evolution of a giant planet within the stellar envelope of a main-sequence star is investigated as a possible mechanism for enhancing the stellar metallicities of the parent stars of extrasolar planetary systems. Three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a planet subject to impacting stellar matter indicate that the envelope of a Jupiter-like giant planet can be completely stripped in the outer stellar convection zone of a solar-mass star. In contrast, Jupiter-like and less massive Saturn-like giant planets are able to survive through the base of the convection zone of a 1.22 solar-m…
We present 5 - 40 micron spectroscopy of 41 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds, observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show the presence of a combination of nebular emission lines and solid-state features from dust, superimposed on the thermal IR continuum. By analyzing the 25 LMC and 16 SMC PNe in our sample we found that the IR spectra of 14 LMC and 4 SMC PNe are dominated by nebular emission lines, while the other spectra show solid-state features. We observed that the solid-state features are compatible with carbon-rich dust …
The chemical composition of Earth's atmosphere has undergone substantial evolution over the course of its history. It is possible, even likely, that terrestrial planets in other planetary systems have undergone similar changes; consequently, the age distribution of nearby stars is an important consideration in designing surveys for Earth-analogues. Valenti & Fischer (2005) provide age and metallicity estimates for 1039 FGK dwarfs in the Solar Neighbourhood. Using the Hipparcos catalogue as a reference to calibrate potential biases, we have extracted volume-limited samples of nearby stars from …
By examining their mass loss history and their distribution in the galaxy I argue that spherical planetary nebulae (PNe) form a special group among all planetary nebulae. The smooth surface brightness of most spherical PNe suggests that their progenitors did not go through a final intensive wind (FIW, also termed superwind) phase. While 70 per cent of the PNe of all other PNe groups are closer to the galactic center than the sun is, only 30 per cent of spherical PNe are. These, plus the well known high scale height above the galactic plane of spherical PNe, suggest that the progenitors of sphe…
During orbital migration of a giant extrasolar planet via ejection of planetesimals (Murray et al.~1998), inner mean motion resonances can be strong enough to cause planetesimals to graze or impact the star. We integrate numerically the motions of particles which pass through the 3:1 or 4:1 mean motion resonances of a migrating Jupiter mass planet. We find that many particles can be trapped in the 3:1 or 4:1 resonances and pumped to high enough eccentricities that they impact the star. This implies that for a planet migrating a substantial fraction of its semi major axis, a significant fractio…
The core-accretion and disk instability models have so far been used to explain planetary formation. These models have different conditions, such as planet mass, disk mass, and metallicity for formation of gas giants. The core-accretion model has a metallicity condition ([Fe/H] > −1.17 in the case of G-type stars), and the mass of planets formed is less than 6 times that of the Jupiter mass MJ. On the other hand, the disk instability model does not have the metallicity condition, but requires the disk to be 15 times more massive compared to the minimum mass solar nebulae model. The mass …
Central stars of extra-solar planetary systems are metal-rich. Planet accretion or initial surmetallicity can explain this observationnal fact. These scenarios can be tested with asteroseismology. We calibrate two stellar models, one with accretion and one with high initial metallicity, in order to obtain the same external parameters for both of them. We then compare their internal structures and their oscillation frequencies.
We explore the predictions of the standard hierarchical clustering scenario of galaxy formation, regarding the numbers and metallicities of PopIII stars likely to be found within our Galaxy today. By PopIII we shall be referring to stars formed at large redshift ($z>4$), with low metallicities ($[Z/Z_{\odot}]<-2.5$) and in small systems (total mass $\simlt$ $2\times 10^{8} M_{\odot}$) that are extremely sensitive to stellar feedback, and which through a prescribed merging history (Lacey & Cole 1993) end up becoming part of the Milky Way today. An analytic, extended Press-Schechter formalism is…
Exoplanets host stars present a clear metallicity excess compared to stars without detected planets, with an average overabundance of 0.2 dex. This excess may be primordial, in which case the stars should be overmetallic down to their center, or it may be due to accretion in the early phases of planetary formation, in which case the stars would be overmetallic only in their outer layers. In the present paper, we show the differences in the internal structure of stars, according to the chosen scenario. Namely two stars with the same observable parameters (luminosity, effective temperature, oute…
Planetary Nebulae (PNs) in the Magellanic Clouds offer the unique opportunity to study both the population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, in an environment that is free of the distance scale bias and the differential reddening that hinder the observations of the Galactic sample. The study of LMC and SMC PNs also offers the direct comparison of stellar populations with different metallicity. The relative proximity of the Magellanic Clouds allows detailed spectroscopic analysis of the PNs therein, while the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is necessary to obtain their spatially-r…
We review the information that planetary nebulae and their immediate progenitors, the post-AGB objects, can provide to probe the nucleosynthesis and mixing in low and intermediate mass stars. We emphasize new approaches based on high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of planetary nebulae and of their central stars. We mention some of the problems still to overcome. We emphasize that, as found by several authors, planetary nebulae in low metallicity environments cannot be used to probe the oxygen abundance in the interstellar medium out of which their progenitors were formed, because of abundance mo…
With the goal of confirming the metallicity ``excess'' observed in stars with planetary mass companions, we have conducted a high-precision spectroscopic study of a ``comparison'' sample of dwarfs included in the CORALIE extra-solar planet survey (Santos, Israelian, & Mayor 2001). The targets were chosen following two basic criteria: they make part of a limited volume and they do not present the signature of a planetary host companion. The spectroscopic analysis, done using the very same technique as previous works on the metallicity of stars with planets, permitted a direct and non-biased com…
With the goal of confirming the metallicity "excess" present in stars with planetary-mass companions, we present in this paper a high-precision spectroscopic study of a sample of dwarfs included in the CORALIE extrasolar planet survey. The targets were chosen according to the basic criteria that 1) they formed part of a limited volume and 2) they did not present the signature of a planetary host companion. A few stars with planets were also observed and analysed; namely, HD 6434, HD 13445, HD 16141, HD 17051, HD 19994, HD 22049, HD 28185, HD 38529, HD 52265, HD 190228, HD 210277 and HD 217107.…
We used our database of ESO VLT-UVES spectra of quasars to build up a sample of 67 Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems with redshifts 1.7<zabs<3.7. For each system, we measured average metallicities relative to Solar, [X/H] (with either X=Zn, S or Si), and the velocity widths of low-ionization line profiles, W1. We find that there is a tight correlation between the two quantities, detected at the 5sigma significance level. The existence of such a correlation, over more than two orders of magnitude spread in metallicity, is likely to be the consequence of an underlying mass-metallicity relation fo…
We present new self-consistent atmosphere models for transiting planets TrES-1 and HD209458b. The planets were recently observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope in bands centered on 4.5 and 8.0 $μ$m, for TrES-1, and 24 $μ$m, for HD209458b. We find that standard solar metallicity models fit the observations for HD209458b. For TrES-1, which has an T_eff ~300 K cooler, we find that models with a metallicity 3-5 times enhanced over solar abundances can match the 1$σ$ error bar at 4.5 $μ$m and 2$σ$ at 8.0$μ$m. Models with solar abundances that included energy deposition into the stratosphere give …
The planetary nebulae He 2-436 and Wray 16-423 in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy appear to result from nearly twin stars, except that third-dredge-up carbon is more abundant in He 2-436. A thorough photoionization-model analysis implies that ratios Ne/O, S/O and Ar/O are significantly smaller in He 2-436, indicative of third-dredge-up oxygen enrichment. The enrichment of oxygen with respect to carbon is (7 +/- 4)%. Excess nitrogen in Wray 16-423 suggests third dredge-up of late CN-cycle products even in these low-mass, intermediate-metallicity stars.
In this review we address the progress that has been made toward the understanding the population of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae since the last Magellanic Cloud Symposium. Planetary nebulae in the Clouds are not only important as key probes of stellar and ISM evolution in these galaxies, but also reflect the evolution of AGB stars and beyond in low-metallicity environments. We present the recent surveys results, including the wide fields ground-based search for PNe, the {\it HST} study of the resolves ejecta and their central stars, and the {\it Spitzer} analysis of the gas contents of …
This paper summarizes a project designed to study abundances in a sample of planetary nebulae representing a broad range in progenitor mass and metallicity. We collect abundances of C, N, and O determined for the entire sample and compare them with theoretical predictions of planetary nebula abundances from a grid of intermediate-mass star models. We find very good agreement between observations and theory, lending strong support to our current understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars with progenitor masses below 8 solar masses. This agreement between observation and theory also supports the …
Four planets have recently been discovered by gravitational microlensing. The most recent of these discoveries is the lowest-mass planet known to exist around a normal star. The detection of planets in gravitational microlensing events was predicted over a decade ago. Microlensing is now a mature field of astrophysical research and the recent planet detections herald a new chapter in the hunt for low mass extra-solar planets. This paper reviews the basic theory of planetary microlensing, describes the experiments currently in operation for the detection and observation of microlensing events a…
We have enlarged the sample of stars in the planet search at Lick Observatory. Doppler measurements of 82 new stars observed at Lick Observatory, with additional velocities from Keck Observatory, have revealed two new planet candidates. The G3V/IV star, HD 195019, exhibits Keplerian velocity variations with a period of 18.27 d, an orbital eccentricity of 0.03 +/- 0.03, and M sin i = 3.51 M_Jup. Based on a measurement of Ca II H&K emission, this star is chromospherically inactive. We estimate the metallicity of HD 195019 to be approximately solar from ubvy photometry. The second planet candidat…
Our analysis of the Deep CFHT M33 variability survey database has uncovered 5 Beat Cepheids (BCs) that are pulsating in the fundamental and first overtone modes. With {\it only} the help of stellar pulsation theory and of mass--luminosity (M-L) relations, derived from evolutionary tracks, we can accurately determine the metallicities Z of these stars. The [O/H] metallicity gradient of -0.16 dex/kpc that is inferred from the M33 galacto-centric distances of these Cepheids and from their 'pulsation' metallicities is in excellent agreement with the standard spectroscopic metallicity gradients tha…
The identification of two new Planetary Nebulae in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy (Sgr) is presented. This brings the total number to four. The first, StWr 2-21, belongs to the main body of Sgr. The second, the halo PN BoBn 1, has a location, distance and velocity in agreement with the leading tidal tail of Sgr. We estimate that 10 per cent of the Galactic halo consists of Sgr debris. The specific frequency of PNe indicates a total luminosity of Sgr, including its tidal tails, of M_V=-14.1. StWr 2-21 shows a high abundance of [O/H]=-0.23, which confirms the high-metallicity population…
This paper reports on the detection of a planetary system with three Super-Earths orbiting HD40307. HD40307 is a K2V metal-deficient star at a distance of only 13 parsec, part of the HARPS GTO high-precision planet-search programme. The three planets on circular orbits have very low minimum masses of respectively 4.2, 6.9 and 9.2 Earth masses and periods of 4.3, 9.6 and 20.5 days. The planet with the shortest period is the lightest planet detected to-date orbiting a main sequence star. The detection of the correspondingly low amplitudes of the induced radial-velocity variations is completely s…
The fact that most extrasolar planets found to date are orbiting metal-rich stars lends credence to the core accretion mechanism of gas giant planet formation over its competitor, the disc instability mechanism. However, the core accretion mechanism is not refined to the point of explaining orbital parameters such as their unexpected semi-major axes and eccentricities. We propose a model, which correlates the metallicity of the host star with the original semi-major axis of its most massive planet, prior to migration, considering that the core accretion scenario governs giant gas planet format…
We present results of NTT spectroscopy of the one known planetary nebula (PN) in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Fornax, a gas-deficient Local Group galaxy that stopped its star formation activity a few hundred million years ago. We detected the [OIII] 4363 line with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~22. For the first time we detected the weak [SII] 6717,6731 lines (I(6717+6731) ~0.01 I(Hbeta)), determined the electron number density (Ne(SII) = 750 cm^-3), and calculated O, N, Ne, Ar, S, Cl, Fe, He and C abundances. The abundance analysis presented here is based on the direct calculation of the electron…
Extrasolar planetary systems range from hot Jupiters out to icy comet belts more distant than Pluto. We explain this diversity in a model where the mass of solids in the primordial circumstellar disk dictates the outcome. The star retains measures of the initial heavy-element (metal) abundance that can be used to map solid masses onto outcomes, and the frequencies of all classes are correctly predicted. The differing dependences on metallicity for forming massive planets and low-mass cometary bodies are also explained. By extrapolation, around two-thirds of stars have enough solids to form Ear…
Recent investigations on the central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) indicate that the masses based on model atmospheres can be much larger than the masses derived from theoretical mass-luminosity relations. Also, the dispersion in the relation between the modified wind momentum and the luminosity depends on the mass spread of the CSPN, and is larger than observed in massive hot stars. Since the wind characteristics probably depend on the metallicity, we analyze the effects on the modified wind momentum by considering the dispersion in this quantity caused by the stellar metallicity. Our CSP…
We calculate multicomponent line-driven wind models of stars at extremely low metallicity suitable for massive first generation stars. For most of the models we find that the multicomponent wind nature is not important for either wind dynamics or for wind temperature stratification. However, for stars with the lowest metallicities we find that multicomponent effects influence the wind structure. These effects range from pure heating to possible fallback of the nonabsorbing wind component. We present a simple formula for the calculation of metallicity for which the multicomponent effects become…
We report the detection of a extrasolar planet candidate orbiting the G1 V star HD 39091. The orbital period is 2083 d and the eccentricity is 0.62. With a minimum (M sin $i$) mass of 10.3 M$_{\rm JUP}$ this object falls near the high mass end of the observed planet mass function, and may plausibly be a brown dwarf. Other characteristics of this system, including orbital eccentricity and metallicity, are typical of the well populated class of radial velocity planets in eccentric orbits around metal-rich stars.
Star clusters provide an excellent opportunity to study the role of environment on determining the frequencies of short period planets. They provide a large sample of stars which can be imaged simultaneously, with a common distance, age and pre-determined physical parameters. This allows the search to be tailor-made for each specific cluster. Several groups are attempting to detect transiting planets in open clusters. Three previous surveys have also targeted the two brightest globular clusters. No cluster survey has yet detected a planet. This contribution presents a brief overview of the fie…
As an ongoing study of Magellanic Cloud PNe we have obtained UV spectra of 9 PNe in the SMC to measure their carbon abundances. The spectra have been acquired with ACS HRC/PR200L and SBC/PR130L. The ACS prisms give a reasonable resolution in the range of 1200 -- 2500 A to detect the C IV, C III], and C II] nebular emission, essential for chemical studies of the PNe. The carbon abundances of SMC PNe, together with those of the LMC previously determined with STIS spectroscopy, will allow a comparative study of nebular enrichment and provide the basis for comparison with stellar evolution models …
While the metallicity excess observed in the central stars of planetary systems is confirmed by all recent observations, the reason for this excess is still a subject of debate : is it primordial, is it the result of accretion or both? The basic argument against an accretion origin is related to the masses of the outer convective zones which vary by more than one order of magnitude among the considered stars while the observed overabundances of metals are similar. We show here that in previous discussions a fundamental process was forgotten : thermohaline convection induced by the inverse mu-g…
The measurement of chemical abundances in planetary nebulae in nearby galaxies is now relatively straightforward. The challenge is to use these chemical abundances to infer the chemical evolution of their host galaxies. At this point, our understanding of chemical evolution based upon planetary nebulae in galaxies without star formation is strongly coupled to our understanding of the relationship between the chemical abundances in stars and planetary nebulae in the Milky Way bulge. Supposing that the same relation holds in all systems where star formation ceased long ago, these systems follow …
We previously determined abundances of He, C, N, O, and Ne for a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe) representing a broad range in progenitor mass and metallicity, and we now compare them with theoretical predictions of PNe abundances from a grid of intermediate-mass star models. We find very good agreement between observations and theory, lending strong support to our current understanding of nucleosynthesis in stars below 8Mo in birth mass. In particular, C and N abundance patterns are consistent with the occurrence of hot-bottom burning in stars above roughly 3.5Mo, a process that converts mu…
In this paper we present the guidelines for an extrasolar planet taxonomy. The discovery of an increasing number of extrasolar planets showing a vast variety of planetary parameters, like Keplerian orbital elements and environmental parameters, like stellar masses, spectral types, metallicity etc., prompts the development of a planetary taxonomy. In this work via principal component analysis followed by hierarchical clustering analysis, we report the definition of five robust groups of planets. We also discuss the physical relevance of such analysis, which may provide a valid basis for disenta…
Radio continuum observations at 1.4, 4.8 and 8.6 GHz of the two Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy reveal the elongated shape of Wray 16-423 and the extreme compactness of He 2-436. He 2-436 is confirmed as subject to local dust extinction. Photoionization models for both PNe are obtained from two different codes, allowing theoretical uncertainties to be assessed. Wray 16-423, excited by a star of Teff 1.07x10^5K, is an ellipsoidal, matter-bounded nebula, except for a denser sector. He 2-436, excited by a 7x10^4K star, includes two radiation-bounded shells, with the inner …
We have used the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain V and I images of seven nearby galaxies. For each, we have measured a distance using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) method. By comparing the TRGB distances to published Cepheid distances, we investigate the metallicity dependence of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. Our sample is supplemented by 10 additional galaxies for which both TRGB and Cepheid distances are available in the literature, thus providing a uniform coverage in Cepheid abundances between 1/20 and 2 (O/H)solar. We find…
We present Gemini near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and spectroscopy of a planetary mass candidate companion to 1RXS J160929.1-210524, a roughly solar-mass member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. The object, separated by 2.22" or 330 AU at ~150 pc, has infrared colors and spectra suggesting a temperature of 1800(-100/+200) K, and spectral type of L4(-2/+1). The H- and K-band spectra provide clear evidence of low surface gravity, and thus youth. Based on the widely used DUSTY models, we infer a mass of 8(-2/+4)Mjupiter. If gravitationally bound, this would be the lowest mass com…
We report a detailed spectroscopic abundance analysis for a sample of 18 F-K dwarfs of the young open cluster IC 4665. Stellar parameters and element abundances of Li, O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe and Ni have been derived using the spectroscopic synthesis tool SME (Spectroscopy Made Easy). Within the measurement uncertainties the iron abundance is uniform with a standard deviation of 0.04 dex. No correlation is found between the iron abundance and the mass of the stellar convective zone, and between the Li abundance and the Fe abundance. In other words, our results do not reveal any signature of …
In this paper we have compiled two new open cluster catalogues. In the first one, there are 119 objects with ages, distances and metallicities available, while in the second one, 144 objects have both absolute proper motion and radial velocity data, of which 45 clusters also with metallicity data available. Taking advantages of the large number of objects included in our sample, we present an iron radial gradient of about -0.063$\pm$0.008 dex/kpc from the first sample. By dividing clusters into age groups, we show that iron gradient was steeper in the past, which is consistent with the recent …
A project which aims to understand the abundance patterns of He, C, N, O, Ne, S, and Ar for a small sample of planetary nebulae is described. Abundance ratios of O/H, C/O, and N/O especially show a broad range relative to their solar values, and AGB stellar evolution models used to interpret the patterns indicate that reasonable ranges in progenitor mass and metallicity are adequate to explain the observed abundance spread. Chemical yields of intermediate-mass stars inferred from these same models are used to calculate chemical evolution models of the solar neighborhood. These models indicate …
We report on the abundances of 13 elements in the planetary host HD 13189, a massive giant star. Abundances are found to be sub-solar, with [Fe/H] = -0.58 +/- 0.04$; HD 13189 is one of the most metal-poor planetary hosts yet discovered. Abundance ratios relative to Fe show no peculiarities with respect to random field stars. A census of metallicities of the seven currently known planet-harboring giants results in a distribution that is more metal-poor than the well-known metal-rich distribution of main sequence (MS) planetary hosts. This finding is discussed in terms of accretion of H-depleted…
We have obtained spectra at the Ca II triplet of individual red giants in seven SMC star clusters whose ages range from ~4 to 12 Gyr. The spectra have been used to determine mean abundances for six of the star clusters to a typical precision of 0.12 dex. When combined with existing data for other objects, the resulting SMC age-metallicity relation is generally consistent with that for a simple model of chemical evolution, scaled to the present-day SMC mean abundance and gas mass fraction. Two of the clusters (Lindsay 113 and NGC 339), however, have abundances that ~0.5 dex lower than that expe…
One way to characterize and understand HI-selected galaxies is to study their metallicity properties. In particular, we show that the metallicity of absorbers is a bivariate function of the HI column density (NHI) and the MgII equivalent width (Wr(2796)). Thus, a selection upon Wr(2796) is not equivalent to a HI selection for intervening absorbers. A direct consequence for damped absorbers with NHI>20.3 from the bivariate metallicity distribution is that any correlation between the metallicity [X/H] and velocity width (or Wr(2796)) arises from the HI cut and therefore can not be interpreted as…
This paper presents a homogeneous study of abundances in a sample of 79 northern galactic planetary nebulae whose morphological classes have been uniformly determined. Ionic abundances and plasma diagnostics were derived from selected optical line strengths in the literature, and elemental abundances were estimated with the Ionization Correction Factor developed by Kingsbourgh & Barlow (1994). We compare the elemental abundances to the final yields obtained from stellar evolution models of low-and intermediate-mass stars, and we confirm that most Bipolar planetary nebulae have high nitrogen an…
We use a large sample of 174 Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to study whether and how the slope of the stellar initial mass function depends on metallicity. We calculate for each object its oxygen abundance according to which we divide our sample into four metallicity subsamples. For each subsample, we then measure three quantities: the equivalent width of \hb emission line, the equivalent width of WR bump around 4650Å, and the WR bump-to-\hb intensity ratio, and compare to the predictions of the same quantities by evolutionary synthesis models of Schaerer & Va…
