The nature of polyamorphism and amorphous-to-amorphous transition is investigated by means of an exactly solvable model with quenched disorder, the spherical s+p multi-spin interaction model. The analysis is carried out in the framework of Replica Symmetry Breaking theory and leads to the identification of low temperature glass phases of different kinds. Besides the usual `one-step' solution, known to reproduce all basic properties of structural glasses, also a physically consistent `two-step' solution arises. More complicated phases are found as well, as temperature is further decreased, expressing a complex variety of metastable states structures for amorphous systems.
We study the dynamics of a particle in a one-dimensional Gaussian random potential with logarithmic correlations. It was shown in previous studies that the model exhibits a dynamical transition between two subdiffusive phases. We numerically investigate both phases by focusing on overlap between trajectories of two independent particles in a common random potential, and show that replica symmetry breaking in trajectory space occurs in the low-temperature phase.
The fully-connected Ising $p$-spin model has for $p >2$ a discontinuous phase transition from the paramagnetic phase to a stable state with one-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB). However, simulations in three dimension do not look like these mean-field results and have features more like those which would arise with full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB). To help understand how this might come about we have studied in the fully connected $p$-spin model the state of two-step replica symmetry breaking (2RSB). It has a free energy degenerate with that of 1RSB, but the weight of the additional …
New technique for replica symmetry breaking with application to the SK-model at and near T=0
We study the energy landscape of the Traveling Salesperson problem (TSP) using exact ground states and a novel linear programming approach to generate excited states with closely defined properties. We look at four different ensembles, notably the classic finite dimensional Euclidean TSP and the mean-field-like (1,2)-TSP, which has its origin directly in the mapping of the Hamiltonian circuit problem on the TSP. Our data supports previous conjectures that the Euclidean TSP does not show signatures of replica symmetry breaking neither in two nor in higher dimension. On the other hand the (1,2)-…
Among the various remarkable contributions of Giorgio Parisi to physics, his formulation of the replica symmetry breaking solution for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model stands out. In this article, different historical sources are used to reconstruct the scientific and professional contexts of this prodigious advance.
We solve the random energy model when the energies of the configurations take only integer values. In the thermodynamic limit, the average overlaps remain size dependent and oscillate as the system size increases. While the extensive part of the free energy can still be obtained by a standard replica calculation with one step replica symmetry breaking, it is no longer possible to recover the overlaps in this way. A possible way to adapt the replica approach is to allow the sizes of the blocks in the Parisi matrix to fluctuate and to take complex values.
The leading term for the average height of the barriers which could separate pure states in Ising spin glasses is calculated using instanton methods. It is finite in dimensions $d < 6$. Replica symmetry breaking requires that the barriers between pure states are infinite in the thermodynamic limit, as finite barriers allow thermal mixing of pure states. As a consequence, a replica symmetry broken phase cannot survive when $d < 6$. However, for $d > 6$ no similar instanton solution exists.
The ferromagnetic XY model on sparse random graphs in a randomly oriented field is analyzed via the belief propagation algorithm. At variance with the fully connected case and with the random field Ising model on the same topology, we find strong evidences of a tiny region with Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) in the limit of very low temperatures. This RSB phase is robust against different choices of the external field direction, while it rapidly vanishes when increasing the graph mean degree, the temperature or the directional bias in the external field. The crucial ingredients to have such a…
Use of dedicated computers in spin glass simulations allows one to equilibrate very large samples (of size as large as $L=32$) and to carry out "computer experiments" that can be compared to (and analyzed in combination with) laboratory experiments on spin-glass samples. In the absence of a magnetic field, the most economic conclusion of the combined analysis of equilibrium and non-equilibrium simulations is that an RSB spin glass phase is present in three spatial dimensions. However, in the presence of a field, the lower critical dimension for the de Almeida-Thouless transition seems to be la…
