We show that genuine multiparty quantum correlations can exist on its own, without a supporting background of genuine multiparty classical correlations, even in macroscopic systems. Such possibilities can have important implications in the physics of quantum information and phase transitions.
We study the dynamics of quantum and classical correlations in a two-qutrit system coupled to independent reservoirs. In particular, we addressed the differences in the dynamics of Markovian and non-Markovian regimes and show that for specific initial states, classical correlations exhibit abrupt changes along the dynamics. A particular sudden change occurs when the classical correlations freezes to a certain value at a given time, revealing the apparition of a pointer-state basis. After this given time, the decoherence only affects quantum correlations. Here we identify two regimes in the dec…
We study the quantum correlation and classical correlation dynamics in a spin-boson model. For two different forms of spectral density, we obtain analytical results and show that the evolutions of both correlations depend closely on the form of the initial state. At the end of evolution, all correlations initially stored in the spin system transfer to reservoirs. It is found that for a large family of initial states, quantum correlation remains equal to the classical correlation during the course of evolution. In addition, there is no increase in the correlations during the course of evolution…
An experiment is proposed to show that after initial frequency and polarization selection, classical thermal light from two independent sources can be made path-polarization entangled. Such light will show new intensity-intensity correlations involving both path and polarization phases, formally similar to those for four-particle GHZ states. For fixed polarization phases, the correlations reduce to the Hanbury Brown-Twiss phase correlations. It is also shown that these classical correlations violate noncontextuality.
Recently, it has been shown that there exist quantum states for which quantum correlations dominate over classical correlations. Inspired by this observation, we investigate the problem of quantum correlations dominance for two-qubit Bell diagonal states in the Ollivier--Zurek paradigm, using both entropic and geometric approach to quantification of classical and quantum correlations. In particular, we estimate numerically the amount of two-qubit Bell diagonal states for which quantum correlations dominate over classical correlations, and vice versa. Moreover, we show that in general these two…
Non-classical correlations denote the ways in which quantum systems can be correlated beyond what is possible in classical physics. They include but are not limited to entanglement: non-entangled states can also exhibit forms of non-classical correlations. We here review the literature on metrological measures of non-classical correlations and show how they relate to increased probe sensitivity in quantum metrology protocols such as interferometric parameter estimation and state discrimination.
We will discuss the generalization of entropic uncertainty principles in terms of a game. The game involves k-players, each measuring one of k possible observables. The question is, what is the maximum number of players that can play such that their joint entropic uncertainties are tightened by the presence of non-classical correlations? We answer this question and relate it to the ratio of quantum mutual information to classical correlations. This game hence serves to construct an operational interpretation of the aforementioned ratio. It provides another example of quantum correlations provi…
We wish to report an experimental observation of anti-correlation from first-order incoherent classical chaotic light. We explain why the classical statistical theory does not apply and provide a quantum interpretation. In quantum theory, either correlation or anti-correlation is a two-photon interference phenomenon, which involves the superposition of two-photon amplitudes, a nonclassical entity corresponding to different yet indistinguishable alternative ways of producing a joint-photodetection event.
Recently some authors have pointed out that there exist nonclassical correlations which are more general, and possibly more fundamental, than entanglement. For these general quantum correlations and their classical counterparts, under the action of decoherence, we identify three general types of dynamics that include a peculiar sudden change in their decay rates. We show that, under suitable conditions, the classical correlation is unaffected by decoherence. Such dynamic behavior suggests an operational measure of both classical and quantum correlations that can be computed without any extremi…
We study the classical correlation (CC) and quantum discord (QD) between two spin subgroups of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model in both binary and trinary decompositions of spins. In the case of bipartition, we find that the classical correlations and all the quantum correlations including the QD, the entanglement of formation (EoF) and the logarithmic negativity (LN) are divergent in the same singular behavior at the critical point of the LMG model. In the case of tripartition, however, the classical correlation is still divergent but all the quantum correlation measures remain finite at …
Entangled graphs II: Classical correlations in multi-qubit entangled systems
Rev.
Superquantum ("PR-box") correlations, though designed to respect relativistic causality, violate relativistic causality in the classical limit. Generalizing to all stronger-than-quantum bipartite correlations, I derive Tsirelson's bound from the axioms of nonlocality, relativistic causality and the existence of a classical limit. This derivation of Tsirelson's bound does not assume quantum mechanics yet suggests how Hilbert space is implicit in quantum correlations.
We study the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on pairwise quantum discord, entanglement, and classical correlation in the anisotropic XY spin-half chain. Analytical expressions for both quantum and classical correlations are obtained from the spin-spin correlation functions. We show that these pairwise quantities exhibit various behaviors in relation to the relative strengths of the DM interaction, the anisotropy and the magnetic intensity. We observe non-analyticities of the derivatives of both quantum and classical correlations with respect to the magnetic intensity at the cr…
In this paper we point out that the genuine quantum and classical correlations defined by Giorgi et al in two different ways [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 190501 (2011), arXiv:1108.0434] do not coincide in general.
The results of space-like separated measurements are independent of distant measurement settings, a property one might call two-way no-signalling. In contrast, time-like separated measurements are only one-way no-signalling since the past is independent of the future but not vice-versa. For this reason temporal correlations that are formally identical to non-classical spatial correlations can still be modelled classically. We define non-classical temporal correlations as the ones which cannot be simulated by propagating in time a classical information content of a quantum system. We first show…
The pairwise correlations in a multi-qubit state are quantified through a linear variant of relative entropy. In particular, we derive the explicit expressions of total, quantum and classical bipartite correlations. Two different bi-partioning schemes are considered. We discuss the derivation of closest product, quantum-classical and quantum-classical product states. We also investigate the additivity relation between the various pairwise correlations existing in pure and mixed states. As illustration, some special cases are examined.
Generalizing the quantifiers used to classify correlations in bipartite systems, we define genuine total, quantum, and classical correlations in multipartite systems. The measure we give is based on the use of relative entropy to quantify the "distance" between two density matrices. Moreover, we show that, for pure states of three qubits, both quantum and classical bipartite correlations obey a ladder ordering law fixed by two-body mutual informations, or, equivalently, by one-qubit entropies.
Correlations between spacelike separated measurements on entangled quantum systems are stronger than any classical correlations and are at the heart of numerous quantum technologies. In practice, however, spacelike separation is often not guaranteed and we typically face situations where measurements have an underlying time order. Here we aim to provide a fair comparison of classical and quantum models of temporal correlations on a single particle, as well as timelike-separated correlations on multiple particles. We use a causal modeling approach to show, in theory and experiment, that quantum…
Analysis of Quantum Correlation in Successive Spin Measurements, Classical Communication of Spin $S$ Singlet States and Quantum Nonlocality of two Qubit Entangled States
Many-party correlations between measurement outcomes in general probabilistic theories are given by conditional probability distributions obeying the non-signalling condition. We show that any such distribution can be obtained from classical or quantum theory, by relaxing positivity constraints on either the mixed state shared by the parties, or the local functions which generate measurement outcomes. Our results apply to generic non-signalling correlations, but in particular they yield two distinct quasi-classical models for quantum correlations.
We experimentally demonstrate a method to control the relative amount of quantum and classical energy correlations between two photons from a pair emitted by spontaneous parametric downconversion. Decoherence in the energy basis is achieved by applying random spectral phases on the photons. As a consequence a diverging temporal second order correlation function is observed and is explained by a mixture between an energy entangled pure state and a fully classically correlated mixte state.
We investigate the relationship between no backwards in time signaling and classically causal correlations. We discover that unlike the case for two parties, the no backwards in time signaling paradigm for three parties is not enough to ensure that correlations can be reproduced with a classical causal ordering. We demonstrate this with an explicit example. We also generalise some existing results for linear two-time states to multi-party scenarios.
We present a detailed study of the dynamics of correlations in non-Markovian environments, applying the hierarchy equations approach. This theoretical treatment is able to take the system-bath interaction into consideration carefully. It is shown that crosses and sudden changes of classical and quantum correlations can happen if we gradually reduce the strength of the interactions between qubits. For some special initial states, sudden transitions between classical and quantum correlations even occur.
Quantum sensing, using quantum properties of sensors, can enhance resolution, precision, and sensitivity of imaging, spectroscopy, and detection. An intriguing question is: Can the quantum nature (quantumness) of sensors and targets be exploited to enable schemes that are not possible for classical probes or classical targets? Here we show that measurement of the quantum correlations of a quantum target indeed allows for sensing schemes that have no classical counterparts. As a concrete example, in case where the second-order classical correlation of a quantum target could be totally concealed…
Quantum correlation lies at the very heart of almost all the non-classical phenomena exhibited by quantum systems composed of more than one subsystem. In the recent days it has been pointed out that there exists quantum correlation, namely discord which is more general than entanglement. Some authors have investigated that for certain initial states the quantum correlations as well as classical correlation exhibit sudden change under simple Markovian noise. We show that, this dy- namical behavior of the both types of correlations can be explained using the idea of complementary correlations in…
A recent paper [1] argues that bipartite "PR-box" correlations, though designed to respect relativistic causality, in fact violate relativistic causality in the classical limit. As a test of Ref. [1], we consider GHZ correlations as a tripartite version of PR-box correlations, and ask whether the arguments of Ref. [1] extend to GHZ correlations. If they do - i.e. if they show that GHZ correlations violate relativistic causality in the classical limit - then Ref. [1] must be incorrect, since GHZ correlations are quantum correlations and respect relativistic causality. But the arguments fail. We…
It is well known that many operations in quantum information processing depend largely on a special kind of quantum correlation, that is, entanglement. However, there are also quantum tasks that display the quantum advantage without entanglement. Distinguishing classical and quantum correlations in quantum systems is therefore of both fundamental and practical importance. In consideration of the unavoidable interaction between correlated systems and the environment, understanding the dynamics of correlations would stimulate great interest. In this study, we investigate the dynamics of differen…
The monogamy relations of entanglement are highly significant. However, they involve only amounts of entanglement shared by different subsystems. Results on monogamy relations between entanglement and other kinds of correlations, and particularly classical correlations, are very scarce. Here we experimentally observe a tradeoff relation between internal quantum nonseparability and external total correlations in a photonic system and found that even purely classical external correlations have a detrimental effect on internal nonseparability. The nonseparability we consider, measured by the conc…
The spatial correlation with classical lights, which has some similar aspects as that with entangled lights, is an interesting and fundamentally important topic. But the features of high-order spatial correlation with classical lights are not well known, and the types of high-order correlations produced are of limit. Here, we propose a scheme to produce third-order spatial correlated states by modulating the phases of three laser beams. With the scheme we can produce Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type (GHZ-type) and W-type spatial correlations with different phase modulations. Our scheme can be …
We discuss the problem of the separation of total correlations in a given quantum state into entanglement, dissonance, and classical correlations using the concept of relative entropy as a distance measure of correlations. This allows us to put all correlations on an equal footing. Entanglement and dissonance, whose definition is introduced here, jointly belong to what is known as quantum discord. Our methods are completely applicable for multipartite systems of arbitrary dimensions. We investigate additivity relations between different correlations and show that dissonance may be present in p…
In this paper we study the possibility of modifying the dynamics of both quantum correlations, such as entanglement and discord, and classical correlations of an open bi-partite system by means of the quantum Zeno effect. We consider two qubits coupled to a common boson reservoir at zero temperature. This model describes, for example, two atoms interacting with a quantized mode of a lossy cavity. We show that, when the frequencies of the two atoms are symmetrically detuned from that of the cavity mode, oscillations between Zeno and anti-Zeno regimes occur. We also calculate analytically the ti…
We report on an experiment to detect non-classical correlations in a highly mixed state. The correlations are characterized by the quantum discord and are observed using four qubits in a liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. The state analyzed is the output of a DQC1 computation, whose input is a single quantum bit accompanied by n maximally mixed qubits. This model of computation outperforms the best known classical algorithms, and although it contains vanishing entanglement it is known to have quantum correlations characterized by the quantum discord. This ex…
We investigate entanglement for a composite closed system endowed with a scaling property allowing to keep the dynamics invariant while the effective Planck constant hbar_eff of the system is varied. Entanglement increases as hbar_eff goes to 0. Moreover for sufficiently low hbar_eff the evolution of the quantum correlations, encapsulated for example in the quantum discord, can be obtained from the mutual information of the corresponding \emph{classical} system. We show this behavior is due to the local suppression of path interferences in the interaction that generates the entanglement. This …
We give a pedagogical introduction to quantum discord. We the discuss the problem of separation of total correlations in a given quantum state into entanglement, dissonance, and classical correlations using the concept of relative entropy as a distance measure of correlations. This allows us to put all correlations on an equal footing. Entanglement and dissonance, whose definition is introduced here, jointly belong to what is known as quantum discord. Our methods are completely applicable for multipartite systems of arbitrary dimensions. We finally show, using relative entropy, how different n…
We identify ambiguities in the available frameworks for defining quantum, classical, and total correlations as measured by discordlike quantifiers. More specifically, we determine situations for which either classical or quantum correlations are not uniquely defined due to degeneracies arising from the optimization procedure over the state space. In order to remove such degeneracies, we introduce a general approach where correlations are independently defined, escaping therefore from a degenerate subspace. As an illustration, we analyze the trace-norm geometric quantum discord for two-qubit Be…
We experimentally investigate the dynamics of classical and quantum correlations of a Bell diagonal state in a non-Markovian dephasing environment. The sudden transition from classical to quantum decoherence regime is observed during the dynamics of such kind of Bell diagonal state. Due to the refocusing effect of the overall relative phase, the quantum correlation revives from near zero and then decays again in the subsequent evolution. However, the non-Markovian effect is too weak to revive the classical correlation, which remains constant in the same evolution range. With the implementation…
We analyze the time dependence of entanglement and total correlations between a system and fractions of its environment in the course of decoherence. For the quantum Brownian motion model we show that the entanglement and total correlations have rather different dependence on the size of the environmental fraction. Redundancy manifests differently in both types of correlations and can be related with induced--classicality. To study this we introduce a new measure of redundancy and compare it with the existing one.
Simulation tasks are insightful tools to compare information-theoretic resources. Considering a generalization of usual Bell scenarios where external quantum inputs are provided to the parties, we show that any entangled quantum state exhibits correlations that cannot be simulated using only shared randomness and classical communication, even when the amount and rounds of classical communication involved are unrestricted. We indeed construct explicit Bell-like inequalities that are necessarily satisfied by such classical resources but nevertheless violated by correlations obtainable from entan…
It is well known that entanglement is the resource of quantum teleportation. Teleportation can be accomplished using classical correlation (CC) with a teleportation fidelity (TF) upto $2/3$. In the present work we have studied TF, entanglement and CC in the presence of decoherence. We have found that significant increment of CC with respect to the strength of decoherence can lead TF in the non-classical region while entanglement is decreasing. We have also studied the protection of TF and entanglement using the technique of weak measurement and reverse weak measurement (WMRWM). Here we found t…
Non-classical correlations can be regarded as resources for quantum information processing. However, the classification problem of non-classical correlations for quantum states remains a challenge, even for finite-size systems. Although there exists a set of criteria for determining individual non-classical correlations, a unified framework that is capable of simultaneously classifying multiple correlations is still missing. In this work, we experimentally explored the possibility of applying machine-learning methods for simultaneously identifying non-classical correlations. Specifically, by u…
We discuss a strongly entangled two-particle state of motion that emerges naturally from the double-pulse dissociation of a diatomic molecule. This state, which may be called dissociation-time entangled, permits the unambiguous demonstration of non-classical correlations by violating a Bell inequality based on switched single particle interferometry and only position measurements. We apply time-dependent scattering theory to determine the detrimental effect of dispersion. The proposed setup brings into reach the possibility of establishing non-classical correlations with respect to system prop…
Quantum coherence and non-classical correlation are key features of quantum world. Quantifying coherence and non-classical correlation are two key tasks in quantum information theory. First, we present a bona fide measure of quantum coherence by utilizing the Hellinger distance. This coherence measure is proven to fulfill all the criteria of a well defined coherence measure, including the strong monotonicity in the resource theories of quantum coherence. In terms of this coherence measure, the distribution of quantum coherence in multipartite systems is studied and a corresponding polygamy rel…
The non-Markovian decoherence of quantum and classical correlations is analytically obtained when two qubits are asymmetrically subjected to the bit flip channel and phase flip channel. For one class of initial mixed states, quantum correlations quantified by quantum discord decay synchronously with classical correlations. The discovery that the decaying rates of quantum and classical correlations suddenly change at the characteristic time is physically interpreted by the distance from quantum state to the closest classical states. In a large time interval, quantum correlations are greater tha…
The total correlations in a bipartite quantum system are measured by the quantum mutual information $\mathcal{I}$, which consists of quantum discord and classical correlation. However, recent results in quantum information shows that coherence, which is a part of total correlation, is more general and more fundamental than discord. The role of coherence in quantum resource theories is worthwhile to investigate. We first study the relation between quantum discord and coherence by reducing the difference between them. And then, we consider the dynamics of quantum discord, classical correlations …
An analog of classical "hidden variables" for qubit states is presented. The states of qubit (two-level atom, spin-1/2 particle) are mapped onto the states of three classical--like coins. The bijective map of the states corresponds to the presence of correlations of random classical--like variables associated with the coin positions "up" or "down" and the observables are mapped onto quantum observables described by Hermitian matrices. The connection of the classical--coin statistics with the statistical properties of qubits is found.
The property of quantum correlation has been studied in recent years, especially for the quantum and classical correlations affected by environment. The dynamics of quantum and classical correlations in two-qubit system under identical local noise channels have been investigated recently. Here we will consider the dynamics of quantum and classical correlations when the local noise channels of two sides are not identical. We investigate the dynamics of quantum and classical correlations with three types of local noise channels in both Markovian and non-Markovian conditions, and show the decay r…
