This article introduces new algorithms for the uniform random generation of labelled planar graphs. Its principles rely on Boltzmann samplers, as recently developed by Duchon, Flajolet, Louchard, and Schaeffer. It combines the Boltzmann framework, a suitable use of rejection, a new combinatorial bijection found by Fusy, Poulalhon and Schaeffer, as well as a precise analytic description of the generating functions counting planar graphs, which was recently obtained by Giménez and Noy. This gives rise to an extremely efficient algorithm for the random generation of planar graphs. There is a preprocessing step of some fixed small cost. Then, the expected time complexity of generation is quadratic for exact-size uniform sampling and linear for approximate-size sampling. This greatly improves on the best previously known time complexity for exact-size uniform sampling of planar graphs with $n$ vertices, which was a little over $O(n^7)$.
Let P_{n,m} denote the graph taken uniformly at random from the set of all planar graphs on {1,2,..., n} with exactly m(n) edges. We use counting arguments to investigate the probability that P_{n,m} will contain given components and subgraphs, finding that there is different asymptotic behaviour depending on the ratio m/n.
Random planar graphs have been the subject of much recent work. Many basic properties of the standard uniform random planar graph P_{n}, by which we mean a graph chosen uniformly at random from the set of all planar graphs with vertex set {1,2,...,n}, are now known, and variations on this standard random graph are also attracting interest. Prominent among the work on P_{n} have been asymptotic results for the probability that P_{n} will be connected or contain given components/subgraphs. Such progress has been achieved through a combination of counting arguments and a generating function appro…
In this paper, we redesign and simplify an algorithm due to Remy et al. for the generation of rooted planar trees that satisfies a given partition of degrees. This new version is now optimal in terms of random bit complexity, up to a multiplicative constant. We then apply a natural process "simulate-guess-and-proof" to analyze the height of a random Motzkin in function of its frequency of unary nodes. When the number of unary nodes dominates, we prove some unconventional height phenomenon (i.e. outside the universal square root behaviour.)
We study large uniform random quadrangulations whose genus grow linearly with the number of faces, whose local convergence was recently established by Budzinski and the author arXiv:1902.00492,arXiv:2012.05813. Here we study several properties of these objects which are not captured by the local topology. Namely we show that balls around the root are planar whp up to logarithmic radius, and we prove that there exists short non-contractible cycles with positive probability.
We prove that the random simple cubic planar graph $\mathsf{C}_n$ with an even number $n$ of vertices admits a novel uniform infinite cubic planar graph (UICPG) as quenched local limit. We describe how the limit may be constructed by a series of random blow-up operations applied to the dual map of the type~III Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation established by Angel and Schramm (Comm. Math. Phys., 2003). Our main technical lemma is a contiguity relation between $\mathsf{C}_n$ and a model where the networks inserted at the links of the largest $3$-connected component of $\mathsf{C}_n$ are rep…
We provide "growth schemes" for inductively generating uniform random $2p$-angulations of the sphere with $n$ faces, as well as uniform random simple triangulations of the sphere with $2n$ faces. In the case of $2p$-angulations, we provide a way to insert a new face at a random location in a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n$ faces in such a way that the new map is precisely a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n+1$ faces. Similarly, given a uniform simple triangulation of the sphere with $2n$ faces, we describe a way to insert two new adjacent triangles so as to obtain a uniform simple triangulation…
The present work describes the asymptotic local shape of a graph drawn uniformly at random from all connected simple planar graphs with n labelled vertices. We establish a novel uniform infinite planar graph (UIPG) as quenched limit in the local topology as n tends to infinity. We also establish such limits for random 2-connected planar graphs and maps as their number of edges tends to infinity. Our approach encompasses a new probabilistic view on the Tutte decomposition. This allows us to follow the path along the decomposition of connectivity from planar maps to planar graphs in a uniformed …
We consider a minimum enclosing and maximum inscribed tropical balls for any given tropical polytope over the tropical projective torus in terms of the tropical metric with the max-plus algebra. We show that we can obtain such tropical balls via linear programming. Then we apply minimum enclosing and maximum inscribed tropical balls of any given tropical polytope to estimate the volume of and sample uniformly from the tropical polytope.
We develop a method to compute the generating function of the number of vertices inside certain regions of the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT). The computations are mostly combinatorial in flavor and the main tool is the decomposition of the UIPT into layers, called the skeleton decomposition, introduced by Krikun. In particular, we get explicit formulas for the generating functions of the number of vertices inside hulls (or completed metric balls) centered around the root, and the number of vertices inside geodesic slices of these hulls. We also recover known results about the sc…
Let $P(n,m)$ be a graph chosen uniformly at random from the class of all planar graphs on vertex set $\left\{1, \ldots, n\right\}$ with $m=m(n)$ edges. We show that in the sparse regime, when $\limsup_{n \to \infty} m/n<1$, with high probability the maximum degree of $P(n,m)$ takes at most two different values.
We prove that any distributional limit of finite planar graphs in which the degree of the root has an exponential tail is almost surely recurrent. As a corollary, we obtain that the uniform infinite planar triangulation and quadrangulation (UIPT and UIPQ) are almost surely recurrent, resolving a conjecture of Angel, Benjamini and Schramm. We also settle another related problem of Benjamini and Schramm. We show that in any bounded degree, finite planar graph the probability that the simple random walk started at a uniform random vertex avoids its initial location for T steps is at most C/log T.
Pursuing the approach of Angel & Ray, we introduce and study a family of random infinite triangulations of the full-plane that satisfy a natural spatial Markov property. These new random lattices naturally generalize Angel & Schramm's Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT) and are hyperbolic in flavor. We prove that they exhibit a sharp exponential volume growth, are non-Liouville, and that the simple random walk on them has positive speed almost surely. We conjecture that these infinite triangulations are the local limits of uniform triangulations whose genus is proportional to the size…
We extend our discrete uniformization theorems for planar, $m$-connected, Jordan domains [Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik 670 (2012), 65--92] to closed surfaces of non-positive genus.
A recent preprint (arXiv:1402.2632) introduced a growth procedure for planar maps, whose almost sure limit is "the uniform infinite 3-connected planar map". A classical construction of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte (1940) associates a squaring of a rectangle (i.e. a tiling of a rectangle by squares) to any to finite, edge-rooted planar map with non-separating root edge. We use this construction together with the map growth procedure to define a growing sequence of squarings of rectangles. We prove the sequence of squarings converges to an almost sure limit: a random infinite squaring of a fin…
We propose a new algorithmic framework, called "partial rejection sampling", to draw samples exactly from a product distribution, conditioned on none of a number of bad events occurring. Our framework builds (perhaps surprising) new connections between the variable framework of the Lovász Local Lemma and some classical sampling algorithms such as the "cycle-popping" algorithm for rooted spanning trees. Among other applications, we discover new algorithms to sample satisfying assignments of k-CNF formulas with bounded variable occurrences.
It is known that for every $α\geq 1$ there is a planar triangulation in which every ball of radius $r$ has size $Θ(r^α)$. We prove that for $α<2$ every such triangulation is quasi-isometric to a tree. The result extends to Riemannian 2-manifolds of finite genus, and to large-scale-simply-connected graphs. We also prove that every planar triangulation of asymptotic dimension 1 is quasi-isometric to a tree.
We consider the problem of sampling an edge almost uniformly from an unknown graph, $G = (V, E)$. Access to the graph is provided via queries of the following types: (1) uniform vertex queries, (2) degree queries, and (3) neighbor queries. We describe an algorithm that returns a random edge $e \in E$ using $\tilde{O}(n / \sqrt{\varepsilon m})$ queries in expectation, where $n = |V|$ is the number of vertices, and $m = |E|$ is the number of edges, such that each edge $e$ is sampled with probability $(1 \pm \varepsilon)/m$. We prove that our algorithm is optimal in the sense that any algorithm t…
Uniform sampling of binary matrix with fixed margins is an important and difficult problem in statistics, computer science, ecology and so on. The well-known swap algorithm would be inefficient when the size of the matrix becomes large or when the matrix is too sparse/dense. Here we propose the Rectangle Loop algorithm, a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to sample binary matrices with fixed margins uniformly. Theoretically the Rectangle Loop algorithm is better than the swap algorithm in Peskun's order. Empirically studies also demonstrates the Rectangle Loop algorithm is remarkablely more e…
