We show that in the accelerating universe the generalized second law of thermodynamics holds only in the case where the enveloping surface is the apparent horizon, but not in the case of the event horizon. The present analysis relies on the most recent SNe Ia events, being model independent. Our study might suggest that event horizon is not a physical boundary from the point of view of thermodynamics.
We study the thermodynamics of accelerating asymptotically AdS black holes with scalar hair in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories, which can be embedded in gauged supergravities for specific dilaton coupling constants. These accelerating black holes are described by charged dilaton C metrics, which have unique features but are almost unexplored before. Thermodynamics of slowly accelerating black holes is generalized to include scalar hair. We find that properly accounting for mixed boundary conditions for the scalar field leads to standard consistent first law and other thermod…
We derive a thermodynamic first law for the electrically charged C-metric with vanishing cosmological constant. This spacetime describes a pair of identical accelerating black holes each pulled by a cosmic string. Treating the "boost time" of this spacetime as the canonical time, we find a thermodynamic first law in which every term has an unambiguous physical meaning. We then show how this first law can be derived using Noetherian methods in the covariant phase space formalism. We argue that the area of the acceleration horizon contributes to the entropy and that the appropriate notion of ene…
We discuss the thermodynamics of an array of collinear black holes which may be accelerating. We prove a general First Law, including variations in the tensions of strings linking and accelerating the black holes. We analyse the implications of the First Law in a number of instructive cases, including that of the C-metric, and relate our findings to the previously obtained thermodynamics of slowly accelerating black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime. The concept of thermodynamic length is found to be robust and a Christoudoulou-Ruffini formula for the C-metric is shown.

We study the thermodynamics of $AdS_4$ black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory that are accelerating, rotating, and carry electric and magnetic charges. We focus on the class for which the black hole horizon is a spindle and can be uplifted on regular Sasaki-Einstein spaces to give solutions of $D=11$ supergravity that are free from conical singularities. We use holography to calculate the Euclidean on-shell action and to define a set of conserved charges which give rise to a first law. We identify a complex locus of supersymmetric and non-extremal solutions, defined through an analyti…
In accordance with current models of the accelerating Universe as a spacetime with a positive cosmological constant, new results about a cosmological upper bound for the area of stable marginally outer trapped surfaces are found taking into account angular momentum, gravitational waves and matter. Compared to previous results which take into account only some of the aforementioned variables, the bound is found to be tighter, giving a concrete limit to the size of black holes especially relevant in the early Universe.
