We have investigated the intersubband transitions of surface state electrons (SSE) on liquid $^3$He induced by microwave radiation at temperatures from 1.1 K down to 0.01 K. Above 0.4 K, the transition linewidth is proportional to the density of $^3$He vapor atoms. This proportionality is explained well by Ando's theory, in which the linewidth is determined by the electron - vapor atom scattering. However, the linewidth is larger than the calculation by a factor of 2.1. This discrepancy strongly suggests that the theory underestimates the electron - vapor atom scattering rate. At lower temperatures, the absorption spectrum splits into several peaks. The multiple peak structure is partly attributed to the spatial inhomogeneity of the static holding electric field perpendicular to the electron sheet.
We explore the energetics of microwaves interacting with a double quantum dot photodiode and show wave-particle aspects in photon-assisted tunneling. The experiments show that the single photon energy sets the relevant absorption energy in a weak-drive limit, which contrasts the strong drive limit where the wave amplitude determines the relevant-energy scale and opens up microwave induced bias triangles. The threshold condition between these two regimes is set by the fine-structure constant of the system. The energetics are determined here with the detuning conditions of the double dot system …
The microwave absorption and noise caused by quantum two-level systems (TLS) dramatically suppress the coherence in Josephson junction qubits that are promising candidates for a quantum information applications. Microwave absorption by TLSs is not clearly understood yet because of the complexity of their interactions leading to the spectral diffusion. Here, the theory of the non-linear absorption in the presence of spectral diffusion is developed using the generalized master equation formalism. The theory predicts that the linear absorption regime holds while a TLS Rabi frequency is smaller th…
Microfocused Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and microwave absorption (MA) are used to study magnon-photon coupling in a system consisting of a split-ring microwave resonator and a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. The split-ring resonantor is defined by optical lithography and loaded with a 1 $μ$m-thick YIG film grown by liquid phase epitaxy. BLS and MA spectra of the hybrid system are simultaneously recorded as a function of the applied magnetic field magnitude and microwave excitation frequency. Strong coupling of the magnon and photon modes is found with a coupling strength of $g_\text{eff}…
Microwave impedance measurements indicate a non-linear absorption anomaly in single wall carbon nanotubes at low temperatures (below $20$ K). We investigate the nature of the anomaly using a time resolved microwave impedance measurement technique. It proves that the anomaly has an extremely slow, a few hundred second long dynamics. This strongly suggests that the anomaly is not caused by an intrinsic electronic effect and that it is rather due to a slow heat exchange between the sample and the environment.
The polarization dependence of photoconductivity response at cyclotron-resonance harmonics in a nondegenerate two-dimensional (2D) electron system formed on the surface of liquid helium is studied using a setup in which a circular polarization of opposite directions can be produced. Contrary to the results of similar investigations reported for semiconductor 2D electron systems, for electrons on liquid helium, a strong dependence of the amplitude of magnetoconductivity oscillations on the direction of circular polarization is observed. This observation is in accordance with theoretical models …
We discuss a mechanism of microwave absorption in conventional superconductors which is similar to the Debye absorption mechanism in molecular gases. The contribution of this mechanism to the \emph{ac} conductivity is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time $τ_\mathrm{\mathrm{in}}$ rather than the elastic one $τ_{\mathrm{el}}$ and therefore it can be much larger than the conventional one. The Debye contribution to the linear conductivity arises only in the presence of a \emph{dc} supercurrent in the system and its magnitude depends strongly on the orientation of the microwa…
Carbon nanotubes have been observed to emit ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation when exposed to microwaves. We have performed experiments in which both short (0.5 microns to 2 microns) and long (5 microns to 30 microns) single and double walled carbon nanotubes were exposed to 2.46 GHz microwaves at a pressure of 10^-6 Torr. Structural modifications of the-carbon nanotubes due to microwave absorption have been studied using the Raman spectroscopy G-band and D-band intensities, which suggest that microwave irradiation at relatively low pressure results in an increase in nanotube defects…
Coulomb interaction has important consequences on the physics of quantum spin Hall edge states, weakening the topological protection via two-particle scattering and renormalizing both the velocity and charge of collective plasmon modes compared to that of free electrons. Despite these effects, interactions remain difficult to quantify. We propose here simple and robust edge resonator geometries to characterize Coulomb interaction by means of high-frequency measurements. They rely on a transmission line approach, and take advantage of the impedance mismatch between the edge states and their mic…
We investigate the dynamics of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) under circular polarized microwave radiation in presence of dilute localized impurities. Inspired by recent developments on Floquet topological insulators we obtain the Floquet wavefunctions of this system which allow us to predict the microwave absorption and charge density responses of the electron gas, we demonstrate how these properties can be understood from the underlying semiclassical dynamics even for impurities with a size of around a magnetic length. The charge density response takes the form of a rotating charge de…
Microwave absorption experiments employing a phase-sensitive external resistive detection are performed for a topical van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr. The field dependence of two resonance modes is measured in an applied field parallel to the three principal crystallographic directions, revealing anisotropies and magnetic transitions in this material. To account for the observed results, we formulate a microscopic spin model with a bi-axial single-ion anisotropy and inter-plane exchange. Theoretical calculations give an excellent description of full magnon spectra enabling us to precisely …
The 2D HgTe quantum well is analyzed based on the assumption that the width fluctuations convert the system to a random mixture of domains with positive and negative energy gaps. The borders between ordinary and topological insulator phases form a network of the edge states covering the overall sample. The optical transitions within the edge states yield the 2D absorption. The qualitative consideration is based on the model of optical intraedge transitions in curved edge states together with the percolation arguments.
The strong coupling regime is observed in a system of two-dimensional electrons whose cyclotron motion is coupled to an electro-magnetic mode in a Fabry-Perot cavity resonator. The Rabi splitting of eigenfrequencies of coupled motion is observed both in the cavity reflection spectrum and ac current of electrons, the latter probed by measuring their bolometric photoresponse. Despite the fact that similar observations of the Rabi splitting in many-particle systems have been described as a quantum-mechanical effect, we show that the observed splitting can be explained completely by a model based …

We show that acoustic crystalline wave gives rise to an effect similar to that of a gravitational wave to an electron gas. Applying this idea to a two-dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime, this allows for experimental study of its dynamical gravitational response. To study such response we generalize Haldane's geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states to situations where the external metric is time-dependent. We show that such time-dependent metric (generated by acoustic or effective gravitational wave) couples to collective modes of the system, includ…

The fine structure of microwave-induced magneto-oscillations in photoconductivity of the two-dimensional electron system formed on a liquid-helium surface
In this study we investigate magnetic properties, surface morphology and crystal structure in iron nanoclusters electrodeposited on lightly-doped (100) n-type silicon substrates. Our goal is to investigate the spin injection and detection in the Fe/Si lateral structures. The samples obtained under electric percolation were characterized by magnetoresistive and magnetic resonance measurements with cycling the sweeping applied field in order to understand the spin dynamics in the as-produced samples. The observed hysteresis in the magnetic resonance spectra, plus the presence of a broad peak in …
Resonant Photovoltaic Effect in Surface-State Electrons on Liquid Helium
我们在液氦表面的二维电子系统中观察到了由微波子带间共振吸收引起的超强光伏效应。这种效应出现在以前报道的微波诱导耗散电导消失的机制中[D。Konstantinov和K. Kono:Phys. Rev. Lett. 105(2010)226801)],并且其特征在于电子在限制静电势中的非平衡空间分布。一个电子所获得的静电能比其他相关能量高出几个数量级。
We report on the deformation of microwave absorption spectra and of the inverse spin Hall voltage signals in thin film bilayers of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and platinum at high microwave power levels in a 9.45-GHz TE011 cavity. As the microwave power increases from 0.15 to 200 mW, the resonance field shifts to higher values, and the initially Lorentzian spectra of the microwave absorption intensity as well as the inverse spin Hall voltage signals become asymmetric. The contributions from opening of the magnetization precession cone and heating of YIG cannot well reproduce the data. Control me…
We demonstrate imaging using scanning microwave microscopy (SMM) of vital mitochondria in respiration buffer. The mitochondria are isolated from cultured HeLa cells and tethered to a solid graphene support. The mitochondria are kept vital (alive) using a respiration buffer, which provides nutrients to sustain the Krebs cycle. We verify that the mitochondria are "alive" by measuring the membrane potential using a voltage sensitive fluorescent dye (TMRE). The organelles are measured capacitively at 7 GHz. Several technical advances are demonstrated which enable this work: 1) The SMM operates in …
Mesoscopic systems constitute appealing platforms to study many-body physics with light and matter degrees of freedom. The Kondo effect refers to the screening of a spin-1/2 impurity by a cloud of conduction electrons, then forming a many-body Fermi liquid ground state. The Kondo resonance produces a phase shift in the transmitted electronic wave packet which depends on the symmetry and nature of the many-body ground state. Theoretical calculations suggest that the Kondo resonance can interact with the irradiation photon field and should give rise to a π-phase shift of the photon signal in the…
We report the first direct observation of the decay of the excited-state population in electrons trapped on the surface of liquid helium. The relaxation dynamics, which are governed by inelastic scattering processes in the system, are probed by the real-time response of the electrons to a pulsed microwave excitation. Comparison with theoretical calculations allows us to establish the dominant mechanisms of inelastic scattering for different temperatures. The longest measured relaxation time is around 1 us at the lowest temperature of 135 mK, which is determined by the inelastic scattering due …
We use a superconducting microresonator as a cavity to sense absorption of microwaves by a superconducting quantum point contact defined by surface gates over a proximitized two-dimensional electron gas. Renormalization of the cavity frequency with phase difference across the point contact is consistent with adiabatic coupling to Andreev bound states. Near $π$ phase difference, we observe random fluctuations in absorption with gate voltage, related to quantum interference-induced modulations in the electron transmission. We identify features consistent with the presence of single Andreev bound…
The ability to detect single photons has become increasingly essential due to the rise of photon-based quantum computing. In this theoretical work, we propose a system consisting of a quantum dot (QD) side-coupled to a superconducting nanowire. The coupling opens a gap in both the QD mode and the Majorana zero mode (MZM) at the nanowire edge, enabling photon absorption in the system. We show that the absorbed photoelectron decays via rapid (sub-nanosecond to nanosecond) nonradiative heat transfer to the nanowire phonon modes rather than by spontaneous emission. Furthermore, we calculate the te…
