We derive a cut-and-paste surgery formula of Seiberg--Witten invariants for negative definite plumbed rational homology 3-spheres. It is similar to (and motivated by) Okuma's recursion formula [arXiv:math.AG/0610464, 4.5] targeting analytic invariants of splice quotient singularities. The two formulas combined provide automatically a proof of the equivariant version [arXiv:math.AG/0310084, 5.2(b)] of the `Seiberg--Witten invariant conjecture' [arXiv:math.AG/0111298] for these singularities.
Assume that $M(\mathcal{T})$ is a rational homology sphere plumbed 3-manifold associated with a connected negative definite graph $\mathcal{T}$. We consider the combinatorial multivariable Poincaré series associated with $\mathcal{T}$ and its counting functions, which encode rich topological information. Using the `periodic constant' of the series (with reduced variables) we prove surgery formulae for the normalized Seiberg-Witten invariants: the periodic constant appears as the difference of the Seiberg-Witten invariants associated with $M(\mathcal{T})$ and $M(\mathcal{T}\setminus\mathcal{I})…
Let M be a rational homology sphere plumbed 3-manifold associated with a connected negative definite plumbing graph. We show that its Seiberg-Witten invariants equal certain coefficients of an equivariant multivariable Ehrhart polynomial. For this, we construct the corresponding polytopes from the plumbing graphs together with an action of the first homology of M, and we develop Ehrhart theory for them. At an intermediate level we define the `periodic constant' of multivariable series and establish their properties. In this way, one identifies the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a plumbed 3-manifo…
A polynomial counterpart of the Seiberg-Witten invariant associated with a negative definite plumbed 3-manifold has been proposed by earlier work of the authors. It is provided by a special decomposition of the zeta-function defined by the combinatorics of the manifold. In this article we give an algorithm, based on multivariable Euclidean division of the zeta-function, for the explicit calculation of the polynomial, in particular for the Seiberg--Witten invariant.
The main goal of the present article is the computation of the Heegaard Floer homology introduced by Ozsvath and Szabo for a family of plumbed rational homology 3-spheres. The main motivation is the study of the Seiberg-Witten type invariants of links of normal surface singularities.
We construct a non-normal affine monoid together with its modules associated with a negative definite plumbed $3$-manifold $M$. In terms of their structure, we describe the $H_1(M,\mathbb{Z})$-equivariant parts of the topological Poincaré series. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the Seiberg--Witten invariants of $M$ and for polynomial generalizations defined in a previous paper of the authors.
For any negative definite plumbed 3-manifold M we construct from its plumbed graph a graded Z[U]-module. This, for rational homology spheres, conjecturally equals the Heegaard-Floer homology of Ozsvath and Szabo, but it has even more structure. If M is a complex singularity link then the normalized Euler-characteristic can be compared with the analytic invariants. The Seiberg--Witten Invariant Conjecture is discussed in the light of this new object.
One of the main questions in the theory of normal surface singularities is to understand the relations between their geometry and topology. The lattice cohomology is an important tool in the study of topological properties of a plumbed 3-manifold M associated with a connected negative definite plumbing graph G. It connects the topological properties with analytic ones when M is realized as a singularity link, i.e. when G is a good resolution graph of the singularity. Its computation is based on the (Riemann-Roch) weights of the lattice points of \Z^s, where s is the number of vertices of G. Th…
We prove a surgery formula of the Casson-Seiberg-Witten invariant of integral homology $S^1 \times S^3$ along an embedded torus, which could either be regarded as an extension of the product formula for Seiberg-Witten invariants or a manifestation of the surgery exact triangle in $4$-dimensional Seiberg-Witten theory of homology $S^1 \times S^3$. As an application, we compute this invariant for mapping tori of $3$-manifolds under diffeomorphisms of finite order and fixed-point set being a simple closed curve. This computation generalizes the result of Lin-Ruberman-Saveliev.
We give a surgery formula for the torsions and Seiberg-Witten invariants associated with $Spin^c$-structures on 3-manifolds. We use the technique of Reidemeister-type torsions and their refinements.
Lattice cohomology, defined by Némethi in (arXiv:0709.0841), is an invariant of negative definite plumbed 3-manifolds which conjecturally computes the Heegaard Floer homology HF^+. We prove a surgery exact triangle for the lattice cohomology analogous to the one for HF^+. This is a step towards comparing these two invariants.
We prove an additivity property for the normalized Seiberg-Witten invariants with respect to the universal abelian cover of those 3-manifolds, which are obtained via negative rational Dehn surgeries along connected sum of algebraic knots. Although the statement is purely topological, we use the theory of complex singularities in several steps of the proof. This topological covering additivity property can be compared with certain analytic properties of normal surface singularities, especially with functorial behaviour of the (equivariant) geometric genus of singularities. We present several ex…
We establish a surgery formula for 3-dimensional Seiberg-Witten monopoles under (+1) Dehn surgery on a knot in a homology 3-sphere. (substantial revision)
We study the counting function of topological Poincaré series associated with rational homology sphere plumbed 3-manifold with connected negative definite tree, interpreting as an alternating sum of coefficient functions associated with some Taylor expansions. It is motivated by a theorem of Szenes and Vergne which expresses these coefficient functions in terms of Jeffrey--Kirwan residues. This is used to prove the uniqueness of the quasipolynomiality inside a special cone, the structure of the counting function in terms of the graph and construction for a polynomial generalization of the Seib…
We prove a surgery formula for the renormalized Euler characteristic of Ozsvath and Szabo. Equality between this Euler cahracteristic and the Seiberg-Witten invariant follows for rational homology three-spheres.
In this article, we show that, at least for non-simply connected case, there exist an infinite family of nondiffeomorphic symplectic 4-manifolds with the same Seiberg-Witten invariants. The main techniques are knot surgery and a covering method developed in Fintushel and Stern's paper (Geometry and Topology, 1999).
This article presents the constructions of new infinite families of smooth 4-manifolds with the property that any two manifolds in the same family are homeomorphic and, from their construction, seem to be quite different, but cannot be distinguished by Seiberg-Witten invariants. Whether these manifolds are, or are not, actually diffeomorphic seems to be a very difficult question to answer. The most interesting of these constructions is a surgery that from certain symplectic 4-manifolds will produce nonsymplectic 4-manifolds. This is detected by calculations of Seiberg-Witten invariants. The su…
In this paper we clarify an issue in the knot surgery construction of Fintushel and Stern. Using knot surgery, they construct an infinite number of smooth structures on 4-manifolds satisfying certain conditions, but they do not explicitly work out the circumstances under which two manifolds that arise from their construction will fail to be diffeomorphic on the grounds of Seiberg-Witten theory. This paper fills in that gap.
We establish two exact sequences for the lattice cohomology associated with non-degenerate plumbing graphs. The first is the analogue of the surgery exact triangle proved by Ozsvath and Szabo for the Heegaard-Floer invariant HF^+; for the lattice cohomology over Z_2-coefficients it was proved by J. Greene. Here we prove it over the integers, and we supplement it by some additional properties valid for negative definite graphs. The second exact sequence is an adapted version which does not mix the classes of the characteristic elements (spin^c-structures); it was partially motivated by the surg…
The main result of this paper asserts that if a Seifert fibered 4-manifold has nonzero Seiberg-Witten invariant, the homotopy class of regular fibers has infinite order. This is a nontrivial obstruction to smooth circle actions; as applications, we show how to destroy smooth circle actions on a 4-manifold by knot surgery, without changing the integral homology, intersection form, and even the Seiberg-Witten invariant. Results concerning classification of Seifert fibered complex surfaces or symplectic 4-manifolds are included. We also show that every smooth circle action on the 4-torus is smoot…
Some aspects of the construction of SW Floer homology for manifolds with non-trivial rational homology are analyzed. In particular, the case of manifolds that are obtained as zero-surgery on a knot in a homology sphere, and for torsion spinc structures. We discuss relative invariants in the case of torsion spinc structures.
In this paper we prove several related results concerning smooth $\Z_p$ or $\s^1$ actions on 4-manifolds. We show that there exists an infinite sequence of smooth 4-manifolds $X_n$, $n\geq 2$, which have the same integral homology and intersection form and the same Seiberg-Witten invariant, such that each $X_n$ supports no smooth $\s^1$-actions but admits a smooth $\Z_n$-action. In order to construct such manifolds, we devise a method for annihilating smooth $\s^1$-actions on 4-manifolds using Fintushel-Stern knot surgery, and apply it to the Kodaira-Thurston manifold in an equivariant setting…
Manolescu correction terms are numerical invariants of homology three-spheres arising from $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant Seiberg-Witten theory that contain information about homology cobordism. We discuss several constraints on these invariants for homology spheres obtained by Dehn surgery on a knot in the three-sphere (and, more generally, in an integral homology $L$-space) in terms of the surgery coefficient, the concordance order, and the genus.
We establish the exact triangle in Seiberg-Witten-Floer theory relating the monopoloe homologies of any two closed 3-manifolds which are obtained from each other by $\pm 1$-surgery. We also show that the sum of the modified version of the Seiberg-Witten invariants for any closed rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ over all $Spin^c$ structures equals to $\frac 12 |H_1(Y, \Z)| λ(Y)$ where $λ(Y)$ is the Casson-Walker invariant.
We study $q$-series-valued invariants of 3-manifolds that depend on the choice of a root system $G$. This is a natural generalization of the earlier works by Gukov-Pei-Putrov-Vafa [arXiv:1701.06567] and Gukov-Manolescu [arXiv:1904.06057] where they focused on $G={\rm SU}(2)$ case. Although a full mathematical definition for these ''invariants'' is lacking yet, we define $\hat{Z}^G$ for negative definite plumbed 3-manifolds and $F_K^G$ for torus knot complements. As in the $G={\rm SU}(2)$ case by Gukov and Manolescu, there is a surgery formula relating $F_K^G$ to $\hat{Z}^G$ of a Dehn surgery o…
The goal of this paper is to give a new proof of a theorem of Meng and Taubes that identifies the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds with Milnor torsion. The point of view here will be that of topological quantum field theory. In particular, we relate the Seiberg-Witten equations on a 3-manifold with the Abelian vortex equations on a Riemann surface. These techniques also give a new proof of the surgery formula for the Casson invariant, interpreted as an invariant of a homology S^2 x S^1.
In an earlier paper (math.SG/0101206), we introduced Floer homology theories associated to closed, oriented three-manifolds Y and SpinC structures. In the present paper, we give calculations and study the properties of these invariants. The calculations suggest a conjectured relationship with Seiberg-Witten theory. The properties include a relationship between the Euler characteristics of these theories and Turaev's torsion, a relationship with the minimal genus problem (Thurston norm), and surgery exact sequences. We also include some applications of these techniques to three-manifold topolog…
Fintushel and Stern have proved that if S \subset X is a symplectic surface in a symplectic 4-manifold such that S has simply-connected complement and nonnegative self-intersection, then there are infinitely many topologically equivalent but smoothly distinct embedded surfaces homologous to S. Here we extend this result to include symplectic surfaces whose self-intersection is bounded below by 2-2g, where g is the genus of S. We make use of tools from Heegaard Floer theory, and include several results that may be of independent interest. Specifically we give an analogue for Ozsvath-Szabo invar…
We develop an explicit skein theoretical algorithm to compute the Alexander polynomial of a 3-manifold from a surgery presentation employing the methods used in the construction of quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. As a prerequisite we establish and prove a rather unexpected equivalence between the topological quantum field theory constructed by Frohman and Nicas using the intersection homology of U(1)-representation varieties on the one side and the combinatorially constructed Hennings-TQFT based on the quasitriangular Hopf algebra ${\cal N}=\Z/2\ltimes \ext *\R^2$ on the other side. We find…
