We study the oxygen doping dependence of the equilibrium first-order melting and second-order glass transitions of vortices in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. Doping affects both anisotropy and disorder. Anisotropy scaling is shown to collapse the melting lines only where thermal fluctuations are dominant. Yet, in the region where disorder breaks that scaling, the glass lines are still collapsed. A quantitative fit to melting and replica symmetry breaking lines of a 2D Ginzburg-Landau model further reveals that disorder amplitude weakens with doping, but to a lesser degree than thermal fluctuations, enhancing the relative role of disorder.
The thermodynamic $H-T$ phase diagram of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ was mapped by measuring local \emph{equilibrium} magnetization $M(H,T)$ in presence of vortex `shaking'. Two equally sharp first-order magnetization steps are revealed in a single temperature sweep, manifesting a liquid-solid-liquid sequence. In addition, a second-order glass transition line is revealed by a sharp break in the equilibrium $M(T)$ slope. The first- and second-order lines intersect at intermediate temperatures, suggesting the existence of four phases: Bragg glass and vortex crystal at low fields, glass and liquid …
Langevin dynamics simulations of the vortex matter in the highly-anisotropic high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ were performed. We introduced point defects as a smoothened distribution of a random potential. Both the electromagnetic and Josephson interactions among pancake vortices were included. A special shaking and annealing process was introduced to let the system approach the equilibrium configuration. We are able to see the inverse melting transition from the Bragg-glass to the amorphous vortex glass state, in agreement with recent experiments.
The behavior of vortex matter in $\mathrm{Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}}$ in the presence of a low concentration of tilted columnar defects (CDs) was studied using magneto-optical measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. We find that while the dynamic properties are significantly affected by tilting the field away from CDs, the thermodynamic lines are angle independent. Our simulations reveal that vortex pancakes remain localized along CDs even at large tilting angles thus preserving the thermodynamic features, while suppression of irreversible properties is caused by vortex kink sliding.
Precision measurements of the vortex phase diagram in single crystals of the layered superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ in oblique magnetic fields confirm the existence of a second phase transition, in addition to the usual first order vortex lattice melting line $H_{m}(T)$. The transition has a strong first order character, is accompanied by strong hysteresis, and intersects the melting line in a tricritical point ($H_{m}^{\perp}$, $H^{\parallel}_{cr}$). Its field dependence and the changing character of the melting line at the tricritical point strongly suggest that the groun…
We observed splitting of the low-bias vortex-flow branch in a dense-Josephson-vortex state into multiple sub-branches in current-voltage characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$ single crystals in the long-junction limit. Each sub-branch corresponds to a plasma mode in serially coupled Josephson junctions. Splitting into low-bias linear sub-branches with a spread in the slopes and the inter-sub-branch mode-switching character are in good quantitative agreement with the prediction of the weak but finite inter-junction capacitive-coupling mod…
The first penetration field H_{J}(T) of Josephson vortices is measured through the onset of microwave absorption in the locked state, in slightly overdoped $\rm{Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}}$ single crystals (T_{c} ~ 84 K). The magnitude of H_{J}(T) is too large to be accounted for by the first thermodynamic critical field H_{c1}(T). We discuss the possibility of a Bean-Livingston barrier, also supported by irreversible behavior upon flux exit, and the role of defects, which relates H_{J}(T) to the c-axis penetration depth $λ_{c}(T)$. The temperature dependence of the latter, determined by a ca…
The local effect of the Josephson vortices on the vortex lattice melting process in \BSCCO crystals in the presence of an in-plane field $H_{ab}$ is studied by differential magneto-optical imaging. The melting process is found to commence along the Josephson vortex stacks, forming a mesomorphic phase of periodic liquid and solid lamellas, the direction and spacing of which are controlled by $H_{ab}$. The reduction of the local melting field $H_m$ along the Josephson vortex stacks is more than an order of magnitude larger than the reduction of the average bulk $H_m$ by $H_{ab}$.
In this paper we describe a version of London Langevin molecular dynamics simulations that allows for investigations of the vortex lattice melting transition in the highly anisotropic high-temperature superconductor material Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. We include the full electromagnetic interaction as well as the Josephson interaction among pancake vortices. We also implement periodic boundary conditions in all directions, including the z-axis along which the magnetic field is applied. We show how to implement flux cutting and reconnection as an analog to permutations in the multilevel Mon…
To study the Josephson-vortex system in the intrinsic Josephson junctions, we have measured the flow resistance as a function of magnetic field parallel to the $ab$ plane in Bi${}_2$Sr${}_2$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+y}$ single crystals. Although it was known that the flow resistance increases smoothly with increasing field, we have found novel oscillations of vortex flow resistance in the small current regime. The period of the oscillations corresponds to the field which is needed to add ``{\it one}'' vortex quantum per ``{\it two}'' Josephson junctions. Commensurability between the lattice spacing of…
Vortex matter phases and phase transitions are investigated by means of Josephson plasma resonance in under-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals in a microwave frequency range between 19 and 70 GHz. Accompanied by the vortex lattice melting transition, a jump of the interlayer phase coherence extracted from the field dependence of the plasma frequency was observed. In the solid phase, the interlayer coherence little depends on field at a temperature region well below $T_c$ while it gradually decreases as field increases toward the melting line up to just below $T_c$. As a result…
To investigate the dynamics of driven vortices in superconductors, noise in the local vortex density was investigated in the mixed state of a high-$T_c$ superconductor, Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_y$, using a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) micro-Hall probe array. We studied the cross-correlation function, together with the auto-correlation function, both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of flow of the vortices. The broadband noise (BBN) did not have large spatial correlations. This suggests that the BBN is due to the fluctuation of the local vortex density generated by bulk pinning …
A magnetic field applied to type-II superconductors introduces quantized vortices that locally quench superconductivity, providing a unique opportunity to investigate electronic orders that may compete with superconductivity. This is especially true in cuprate superconductors in which mutual relationships among superconductivity, pseudogap, and broken-spatial-symmetry states have attracted much attention. Here we observe energy and momentum dependent bipartite electronic superstructures in the vortex core of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscop…
Measurements of non-local in-plane resistance originating from transverse vortex-vortex correlations have been performed on a Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} high-T_c superconductor in a magnetic field up to 9 T applied along the crystal c-axis. Our results demonstrate that a rigid vortex lattice does exist over a broad portion of the magnetic field -- temperature (H-T) phase diagram, well above the first-order transition boundary H_{FOT}(T). The results also provide evidence for the vortex lattice melting and vortex liquid decoupling phase transitions, occurring above the H_{FOT}(T).
We study the distribution of transport current across superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ crystals and the vortex flow through the sample edges. We show that the $T_x$ transition is of electrodynamic rather than thermodynamic nature, below which vortex dynamics is governed by the edge inductance instead of the resistance. This allows measurement of the resistance down to two orders of magnitude below the transport noise. By irradiating the current contacts the resistive step at vortex melting is shown to be due to loss of c-axis correlations rather than breakdown of quasi-long-range orde…
We set up a melting model for vortex lattices in high-temperature superconductors based on the continuum elasticity theory. The model is Gaussian and includes defect fluctuations by means of a discrete-valued vortex gauge field. We derive the melting temperature of the lattice and predict the size of the Lindemann number. Our result agrees well with experiments for $ {\rm YBa}_2 {\rm Cu}_3 {\rm O}_{7-δ} $, and with modifications also for $ {\rm Bi}_2 {\rm Sr}_2 {\rm Ca} {\rm Cu}_2 {\rm O}_8 $ . We calculate the jumps in the entropy and the magnetic induction at the melting transition.
We investigate vortex structure and melting transition in very anisotropic layered superconductors at fields tilted with respect to the c-axis. We show that even a small in-plane field does not homogeneously tilt the vortex lattice but, instead, penetrates inside the superconductor in the form of Josephson vortices (JVs) similar to the Meissner state. At high c-axis magnetic field the phase field of the JV is built up from the phase perturbations created by displacements of pancake vortices. The crossing-lattices ground state leads to linear dependencies of the melting field and melting temper…
We examine the depinning transitions and the temperature versus driving force phase diagram for magnetically interacting pancake vortices in layered superconductors. For strong disorder the initial depinning is plastic followed by a sharp hysteretic transition to a 3D ordered state for increasing driving force. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for driven anisotropic charge density wave systems. We also show that a temperature induced peak effect in the critical current occurs due to the onset of plasticity between the layers.
We demonstrate a geometrical effect on the depinning line (DL) of the flux line lattice of the Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ high-T$_c$ superconductor (HTSC) micrometer ring. The DL shifts to notably lower temperatures in comparison to bulk crystals and thin flakes of the same sample. The shift is attributed to a decrease in the overall pinning potential due to a double size effect, namely: a) the ring thickness $\sim 1~μ$m being smaller than the pinning correlation length, and b) the increase in the effective London penetration depth of the vortices (Pearl vortices). The large shift of …
We examine the melting of commensurate and incommensurate vortex lattices interacting with square pinning arrays through the use of numerical simulations. For weak pinning strength in the commensurate case we observe an order-order transition from a commensurate square vortex lattice to a triangular floating solid phase as a function of temperature. This floating solid phase melts into a liquid at still higher temperature. For strong pinning there is only a single transition from the square pinned lattice to the liquid state. For strong pinning in the incommensurate case, we observe a multi-st…
We present a mode locking (ML) phenomenon of vortex matter observed around the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ pure single crystals. The ML features allow us not only to trace how the shear rigidity of driven vortices persists on approaching the second critical field, but also to demonstrate a dynamic melting transition of driven vortices at a given velocity. We observe the velocity dependent melting signatures in the peak effect regime, which reveal a crossover between the disorder-induced transition at small velocity and the thermally induced transition at large velocity. This uncovers the…
The vortex correlation along the c-axis in high quality single crystals of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$ has been investigated as a function of temperature T in different magnetic fields, using the quasi-flux transformer configuration. A simultaneous sharp drop associated with the vortex lattice melting is observed in both the primary and secondary voltages(V$_{top}$ and V$_{bot}$). Just above the melting temperature, the vortices form three-dimensional line liquid with the correlation length along the c direction $L_{c}\leq $ t, the sample thickness. The temperature where a resistive peak in R$_{b…
The vortex-liquid and vortex-solid phases in single crystals of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ placed in tilted magnetic fields are studied by in-plane resistivity measurements using the Corbino geometry to avoid spurious surface barrier effects. It was found that the anisotropy of the vortex-solid phase increases with temperature and exhibits a maximum at $T\approx 0.97 T_c$. In contrast, the anisotropy of the vortex-liquid rises monotonically across the whole measured temperature range. The observed behavior is discussed in the context of dimensional crossover and thermal fluctuations of vort…
We consider the vortex matter in a three-dimensional two-component superconductor with individually conserved condensates with different bare phase stiffnesses in a finite magnetic field, such as the projected superconducting state of liquid metallic hydrogen. The ground state is an Abrikosov lattice of {\it composite}, i.e. co-centered, vortices in both order parameters. We investigate quantitatively two novel phase transitions when temperature is increased at fixed magnetic field. {\it i)} A ``vortex sub-lattice melting" phase transition where vortices in the field with lowest phase stiffnes…
Vortices in thin-film superconductors are often modelled as a system of particles interacting via a repulsive logarithmic potential. Arguments are presented to show that the hypothetical (Abrikosov) crystalline state for such particles is unstable at any finite temperature against proliferation of screened disclinations. The correlation length of crystalline order is predicted to grow as $\sqrt{1/T}$ as the temperature $T$ is reduced to zero, in excellent agreement with our simulations of this two-dimensional system.
Vortices in a type-II superconductor form a lattice structure that melts when the thermal displacement of the vortices is an appreciable fraction of the distance between vortices. In an anisotropic high-Tc superconductor, such as YBa2Cu3Oy, the magnetic field value where this melting occurs can be much lower than the mean-field critical field Hc2. We examine this melting transition in YBa2Cu3Oy with oxygen content y from 6.45 to 6.92, and fit the data to a theory of vortex-lattice melting. The quality of the fits indicates that the transition to a resistive state is indeed the vortex lattice m…
We use a simple elastic Hamiltonian for the vortex lattice in a weak impurity background which includes defects in the form of integer-valued fields to calculate the free energy of a vortex lattice in the deep H_{c2} region. The phase diagram in this regime is obtained by applying the variational approach of M{é}zard and Parisi developed for random manifolds. We find a first-order line between the Bragg-glass and vortex-glass phase as a continuation of the melting line. In the liquid phase, we obtain an almost vertical third-order glass transition line near the critical temperature in the H-T …
B-T phase diagram and phase transitions of interlayer Josephson vortices are investigated. For magnetic fields above a critical value, we find a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type intermediate phase characterized by in-plane two-dimensional, quasi long-range orders (QLROs) of vortex alignment and superconductivity. The transformation to high-temperature normal phase is a KT transition. The evolution to low-temperature phase of three-dimensional (3D) LRO of vortex alignment is a second-order phase transition in the 3D XY universality class. For low magnetic fields, a single first-order melting trans…
Using numerical simulations we study the configurations, dynamics, and melting properties of vortex lattices interacting with elliptical pinning sites at integer matching fields with as many as 27 vortices per pin. Our pinning model is based on a recently produced experimental system [G. Karapetrov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 167002 (2005)], and the vortex configurations we obtain match well with experimental vortex images from the same system. We find that the strong pinning sites capture more than one vortex each, and that the saturation number of vortices residing in a pin increases with a…
Muon spin rotation measurements of the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state of the oxygen deficient high-Tc superconductor YBa{2}Cu{3}O{6.60} reveal a vortex-lattice melting transition at much lower temperature than that in the fully oxygenated material. The transition is best described by a model in which adjacent layers of ``pancake'' vortices decouple in the liquid phase. Evidence is also found for a pinning-induced crossover from a solid 3D to quasi-2D vortex lattice, similar to that observed in the highly anisotropic superconductor Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu{2}O{8+y}.
Bitter decoration and magneto-optical studies reveal that in heavy-ion irradiated superconductors, a 'porous' vortex matter is formed when vortices outnumber columnar defects (CDs). In this state ordered vortex crystallites are embedded in the 'pores' of a rigid matrix of vortices pinned on CDs. The crystallites melt through a first-order transition while the matrix remains solid. The melting temperature increases with density of CDs and eventually turns into a continuous transition. At high temperatures a sharp kink in the melting line is found, signaling an abrupt change from crystallite mel…
We study the effect of quenched disorder in the thermodynamic magnitudes entailed in the first-order vortex phase transition of the extremely layered Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8 + δ}$ compound. We track the temperature-evolution of the enthalpy and the entropy-jump at the vortex solidification transition by means of AC local magnetic measurements. Quenched disorder is introduced to the pristine samples by means of heavy-ion irradiation with Pb and Xe producing a random columnar-track pins distribution with different densities (matching field $B_Φ$). In contrast with previous magneto-optica…
We study the effects of an $ab$-surface on the vortex-solid to vortex-liquid transition in layered superconductors in the limit of vanishing inter-layer Josephson coupling. We derive the interaction between pancake vortices in a semi-infinite sample and adapt the density functional theory of freezing to this system. We obtain an effective one-component order-parameter theory which can be used to describe the effects of the surface on vortex-lattice melting. Due to the absence of protecting layers in the neighbourhood of the surface, the vortex lattice formed near the surface is more susceptibl…
We report a numerical study of the vortex system in the two dimensional II-type superconductors. We have proposed a phenomenological model that takes into account quantum fluctuations of Abrikosov's vortices. The results of the quantum Monte-Carlo simulations by the SSE algorithm show that the thermal fluctuations are dominated by quantum fluctuations at low temperatures. In particular, we demonstrate the possibility of the quantum melting transition for vortex system in the temperature region where thermal melting transition is improbable.
Topological defects such as dislocations and disclinations are predicted to determine the twodimensional (2-D) melting transition. In 2-D superconducting vortex lattices, macroscopic measurements evidence melting close to the transition to the normal state. However, the direct observation at the scale of individual vortices of the melting sequence has never been performed. Here we provide step by step imaging through scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a 2-D system of vortices up to the melting transition in a focused-ion-beam nanodeposited W-based superconducting thin film. We show directly th…
We studied the commensurate semi-fluxon oscillations of Josephson flux-flow (JFF) in a Bi-2212 stacked structures near $T_c$ as a probe of melting of Josephson vortex lattice (JVL). We found that oscillations exist above 0.5T. The amplitude of oscillations is found to decrease gradually with temperature and to turn to zero without any jump at $T=T_0$, 3.5K below the resistive transition temperature $T_c$ indicating the phase transition of the second order. This characteristic temperature $T_0$ is identified as the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature, $T_{BKT}$, in elem…
The angular dependence of the first-order phase transition (FOT) in the vortex lattice in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ crystals was investigated by a low frequency AC shielding technique (with the AC field $\parallel c$), in which the static-field component parallel to $c$- ($H_{\perp}$) was varied with the in-plane field $H_{\parallel}$ held constant. The linear decrease of the FOT field $H_{\perp}^{FOT}$ with increasing $H_{\parallel}$ ends at a temperature--dependent critical value of $H_{\parallel}$. A new transition, marked by the abrupt drop of the $ab$-plane shielding current, appe…
We calculate the melting line of the pancake-vortex system in a layered superconductor, interpolating between two-dimensional (2D) melting at high fields and the zero-field limit of single-stack evaporation. Long-range interactions between pancake vortices in different layers permit a mean-field approach, the ``substrate model'', where each 2D crystal fluctuates in a substrate potential due to the vortices in other layers. We find the thermal stability limit of the 3D solid, and compare the free energy to a 2D liquid to determine the first-order melting transition and its jump in entropy.
We study numerically the effects of temperature on moving vortex lattices interacting with periodic pinning arrays. For low temperatures the vortex lattice flows in channels, forming a hexatic structure with long range transverse and longitudinal ordering. At higher temperatures, a transition to a smectic state occurs where vortices wander between channels and longitudinal order is lost while transverse order remains. At the highest temperatures the vortex lattice melts into an isotropic liquid.
Distinct discontinuities in the thermal expansion of the crystal lattice are observed at the melting-transition of the vortex lattice in a naturally untwinned reversible YBa2Cu3O7-d-single crystal using high-resolution dilatometry. This coupling between the vortex transition and the crystal lattice demonstrates that the crystal lattice is more than a mere host for the vortices, and it is attributed to a strong pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature and thus to the condensation energy at the vortex melting temperature.
The diversity of vortex melting and solid-solid transition lines measured in different high-T$_{c}$ superconductors is explained, postulating a unified order-disorder phase transition driven by both thermally- and disorder-induced fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the transition line and the nature of the disordered phase (solid, liquid, or pinned liquid) are determined by the relative contributions of these fluctuations and by the pinning mechanism. By varying the pinning mechanism and the pinning strength one obtains a spectrum of monotonic and non-monotonic transition lines simila…
The thermal conductivity κof Bi-2212 is measured in pure and Zn-doped crystals as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The in-plane resistivity is also measured on the identical samples. Using these data, we make a crude estimate of the impurity-scattering rate Γof the pure and the Zn-doped crystals. Our measurement show that the "plateau" in the κ(H) profile is not observed in the majority of our Bi-2212 crystals, including one of the cleanest crystals available to date. The estimated values of Γfor the pure and Zn-doped samples allow us to compare the κ(H) data with the existing the…
The dynamic phase diagram of vortex lattices driven in disorder is calculated in two and three dimensions. A modified Lindemann criterion for the fluctuations of the distance of neighboring vortices is used, which unifies previous analytic approaches to the equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase transitions. The temperature shifts of the dynamic melting and decoupling transitions are found to scale inversely proportional to large driving currents. A comparison with two-dimensional simulations shows that this phenomenological approach can provide quantitative estimate for the location of these t…
Using numerical results obtained within two models describing vortex matter (interacting elastic lines (Bose model) and uniformly frustrated XY-model) we establish universal properties of the melting transition within the linelike regime. These properties, which are captured correctly by both models, include the scaling of the melting temperature with anisotropy and magnetic field, the effective line tension of vortices in the liquid regime, the latent heat, the entropy jump per entanglement length, and relative jump of Josephson energy at the transition as compared to the latent heat. The uni…
The structure and equilibrium properties of a two-dimensional system of superconducting vortices in a periodic pinning potential with square symmetry are studied numerically. For a range of the strength of the pinning potential, the low-temperature crystalline state exhibits only one of the two basic periodicities (in the $x$- and $y$-directions) of the pinning potential. This ``partially pinned'' solid undergoes a continuous melting transition to a weakly modulated liquid as the temperature is increased. A spin model, constructed using symmetry arguments, is shown to reproduce the critical be…
We study force-free configurations of Abrikosov flux lines in the line-liquid and line-crystal limit, near the melting transition at H_m. We show that the condition for zero force configurations can be solved by appealing to the structure of chiral liquid crystalline phases.
Possible phases and the B-T phase diagram of interlayer Josephson vortices induced by a magnetic field parallel to the superconducting layers are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations based on the anisotropic, frustrated XY model. While for low magnetic fields and small anisotropy parameters a single first-order transition is observed similarly to the melting of Abrikosov (or pancake) vortex lattice, an intermediate phase, characterized by decoupled, two-dimensional (2D) quasi long-range crystalline order (QLRCO) and superconductivity, is found at high magnetic fields and large anisotropy pa…
The state of the vortex lattice extremely close to the superconducting to normal transition in an applied magnetic field is investigated in high purity niobium. We observe that thermal fluctuations of the order parameter broaden the superconducting to normal transition into a crossover but no sign of a first order vortex lattice melting transition is detected in measurements of the heat capacity or the small angle neutron scattering (SANS) intensity. Direct observation of the vortices via SANS always finds a well ordered vortex lattice. The fluctuation broadening is considered in terms of the …
In very anisotropic layered superconductors (e.g. Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_x$) a tilted magnetic field can penetrate as two co-existing lattices of vortices parallel and perpendicular to the layers. At low out-of-plane fields the perpendicular vortices form a set of isolated vortex chains, which have recently been observed in detail with scanning Hall-probe measurements. We present calculations that show a very delicate stability of this isolated-chain state. As the vortex density increases along the chain there is a first-order transition to a buckled chain, and then the chain will expel vortic…
The effect of columnar pins on the flux-lines melting transition in high-temperature superconductors is studied using Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. We highlight the similarities and differences in the effects of columnar disorder on the melting transition in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) and the highly anisotropic Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO) at magnetic fields such that the mean separation between flux-lines is smaller than the penetration length. For pure systems, a first order transition from a flux-line solid to a liquid phase is seen as the temperature is increased. When…
We consider defect mediated melting of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and pair density wave (PDW) phases in two dimensions. Examining mean-field ground states in which the spatial oscillations of the FFLO/PDW superfluid order parameter exhibit hexagonal lattice symmetry, we find that thermal melting leads to a variety of novel phases. We find that a spatially homogeneous charge six superfluid can arise from melting a hexagonal vortex-anitvortex lattice FFLO/PDW phase. The charge six superfluid has an order parameter corresponding to a bound state of six fermions. We further find that …
A set of interacting vortices in $2D$ in the presence of a substrate with square symmetry and at filling ratio $1$ can display a low temperature solid phase where only one of the reciprocal lattice vectors of the substrate is present\cite{toby1,fasano}. This partially pinned vortex lattice melts to a modulated liquid via a continuous transition \cite{toby1}. Brownian dynamics simulation is carried out to study the behavior of driven partially pinned solid at different temperatures. The average vortex velocity for forces above the depinning threshold shows a non-monotonic behavior with temperat…
We detect the persistence of the solidification and order-disorder first-order transition lines in the phase diagram of nanocrystalline Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ vortex matter down to a system size of less than hundred vortices. The temperature-location of the vortex solidification transition line is not altered by decreasing the sample size although there is a depletion of the entropy-jump at the transition with respect to macroscopic vortex matter. The solid order-disorder phase transition field moves upward on decreasing the system size due to the increase of the surface-to-volume r…
The flux line lattice melting transition in two-dimensional pure and disordered superconductors is studied by a Monte Carlo simulation using the lowest Landau level approximation and quasi-periodic boundary condition on a plane. The position of the melting line was determined from the diffraction pattern of the superconducting order parameter. In the clean case we confirmed the results from earlier studies which show the existence of a quasi-long range ordered vortex lattice at low temperatures. Adding frozen disorder to the system the melting transition line is shifted to slightly lower field…
Inverse melting, in which a crystal reversibly transforms into a liquid or amorphous phase upon decreasing the temperature, is considered to be very rare in nature. The search for such an unusual equilibrium phenomenon is often hampered by the formation of nonequilibrium states which conceal the thermodynamic phase transition, or by intermediate phases, as was recently shown in a polymeric system. Here we report a first-order inverse melting of the magnetic flux line lattice in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductor. At low temperatures, the material disorder causes significant pinning of the vortices, …
Dislocation-free decoration images containing up to 80,000 vortices have been obtained on high quality Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$ superconducting single crystals. The observed flux line lattices are in the random manifold regime with a roughening exponent of 0.44 for length scales up to 80-100 lattice constants. At larger length scales, the data exhibit nonequilibrium features that persist for different cooling rates and field histories.
We discuss the superconductor to normal phase transition in an infinite-layered type-II superconductor in the limit where the Josephson coupling between layers is negligible. We model each layer as a neutral gas of thermally excited pancake vortices. We assume the dominant interaction between vortices in the same and in different layers is the electromagnetic interaction between the screening currents induced by these vortices. Our main result, obtained by exactly solving the leading order renormalization group flow, is that the phase transition in this model is a Kosterlitz--Thouless transiti…
The theory presented is based on a simple Hamiltonian for a vortex lattice in a weak impurity background which includes linear elasticity and plasticity, the latter in the form of integer valued fields accounting for defects. Within a quadratic approximation in the impurity potential, we find a first-order Bragg-glass, vortex-glass transition line showing a reentrant behavior for superconductors with a melting line near $ H_{c2} $. Going beyond the quadratic approximation by using the variational approach of Mézard and Parisi established for random manifolds, we obtain a phase diagram containi…
