Brownian dynamics study of driven partially pinned solid in the presence of square array of pinning centers: Enhanced pinning close to the melting transition
A set of interacting vortices in $2D$ in the presence of a substrate with square symmetry and at filling ratio $1$ can display a low temperature solid phase where only one of the reciprocal lattice vectors of the substrate is present\cite{toby1,fasano}. This partially pinned vortex lattice melts to a modulated liquid via a continuous transition \cite{toby1}. Brownian dynamics simulation is carried out to study the behavior of driven partially pinned solid at different temperatures. The average vortex velocity for forces above the depinning threshold shows a non-monotonic behavior with temperature, with a minimum in the average velocity close to the melting point. This is reminiscent of the peak effect seen in vortex systems with random disorder. This effect in the current system can be qualitatively explained by an effective increase in the barriers encountered by the particles as $T_c$ is approached. Approximate calculation of the energy barriers as a function of temperature, from the simulation supports this claim.
Using numerical simulations we study the pinning and dynamics of interacting colloids on periodic one-dimensional substrates. As a function of colloid density, temperature, and substrate strength, we find a variety of pinned and dynamic states including pinned smectic, pinned buckled, two-phase flow, and moving partially ordered structures. We show that for increasing colloid density, peaks in the depinning threshold occur at commensurate states. The scaling of the pinning threshold versus substrate strength changes when the colloids undergo a transition from one-dimensional chains to a buckle…
We present the results of a computer simulation study of the melting scenario of two-dimensional soft-disk systems with potential $U(r)=\varepsilon(σ/r)^n$, $n=12$ and $n=1024$, both in the presence of random pinning and without it. The melting parameters have been determined from analysis of the behavior of equations of state, correlation functions of the orientational and translational order parameters, Young modulus and renormalization group equations. The transition points obtained from these criteria are in good agreement. We have shown that the systems melted in two stages - first-order …
The relation between thermal fluctuations and the mechanical response of a free membrane has been explored in great detail, both theoretically and experimentally. However, understanding this relationship for membranes, locally pinned by proteins, is significantly more challenging. Given that the coupling of the membrane to the cell cytoskeleton, the extracellular matrix and to other internal structures is crucial for the regulation of a number of cellular processes, understanding the role of the pinning is of great interest. In this manuscript we consider a single protein (elastic spring of a …
The random disorder can drastically change the melting scenario of two-dimensional systems and has to be taken into account in the interpretation of the experimental results. We present the results of the molecular dynamics simulations of the two dimensional system with the core-softened potentials with two repulsive steps in which a small fraction of the particles is pinned, inducing quenched disorder. It is shown that without the quenched disorder the system with small repulsive shoulder, which is close in the shape to the soft disks, melts in accordance with the melting scenario proposed in…
Despite about forty years of investigations, the nature of the melting transition in two dimensions is not completely clear. In the framework of the most popular Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (BKTHNY) theory, 2D systems melt through two continuous Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transitions with intermediate hexatic phase. The conventional first-order transition is also possible. On the other hand, recently on the basis of computer simulations the new melting scenario was proposed with continuous BKT type solid-hexatic transition and first order hexatic-liquid tra…
We study the effects of random pinning on the Fredrickson-Andersen model on the Bethe lattice. We find that the nonergodic transition temperature rises as the fraction of the pinned spins increases and the transition line terminates at a critical point. The freezing behavior of the spins is analogous to that of a randomly pinned p-spin mean-field spin glass model which has been recently reported. The diverging behavior of correlation lengths in the vicinity of the terminal critical point is found to be identical to the prediction of the inhomogeneous mode-coupling theory at the A3 singularity …
We generalize the force-level, microscopic, Nonlinear Langevin Equation (NLE) theory and its elastically collective generalization (ECNLE theory) of activated dynamics in bulk spherical particle liquids to address the influence of random particle pinning on structural relaxation. The simplest neutral confinement model is analyzed for hard spheres where there is no change of the equilibrium pair structure upon particle pinning. As the pinned fraction grows, cage scale dynamical constraints are intensified in a manner that increases with density. This results in the mobile particles becoming mor…
In experiments the two-dimensional systems are realized mainly on solid substrates which introduce quenched disorder due to some inherent defects. The defects of substrates influence the melting scenario of the systems and have to be taken into account in the interpretation of the experimental results. We present the results of the molecular dynamics simulations of the two dimensional system with the core-softened potential in which a small fraction of the particles is pinned, inducing quenched disorder. The potentials of this type are widely used for the qualitative description of the systems …
The findings of long-lived surface nanobubbles in various experiments brought a puzzle in theory, as they were supposed to be dissolved in microseconds due to the high Laplace pressure. However, an increasing number of studies suggest that the pinning of contact line, together with certain levels of oversaturation, is responsible for the anomalous stability of surface nanobubble. This mechanism can interpret most characteristics of surface nanobubbles. Here we summarize recent theoretical and computational work to explain how the surface nanobubbles become stable with the pinning of contact li…
We use a simple mode-coupling approach to investigate glassy dynamics of partially pinned fluid systems. Our approach is different from the mode-coupling theory developed by Krakoviack [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 065703 (2005), Phys. Rev. E 84, 050501(R) (2011)]. In contrast to Krakoviack's theory, our approach predicts a random pinning glass transition scenario that is qualitatively the same as the scenario obtained using a mean-field analysis of the spherical p-spin model and a mean-field version of the random first-order transition theory. We use our approach to calculate quantities which are oft…
We simulate a model of repulsively interacting colloids on a commensurate two-dimensional triangular pinning substrate where the amount of heterogeneous motion that appears at melting can be controlled systematically by turning off a fraction of the pinning sites. We correlate the amount of heterogeneous motion with the average topological defect number, time dependent defect fluctuations, colloid diffusion, and the form of the van Hove correlation function. When the pinning sites are all off or all on, the melting occurs in a single step. When a fraction of the sites are turned off, the melti…
Strained amorphous solids often fail mechanically by creating a shear-band. It had been understood that the shear banding instability is usefully described as crossing a spinodal point (with disorder) in an appropriate thermodynamic description. It remained contested however whether the spinodal is critical (with divergent correlation length) or not. Here we offer evidence for critical spinodal by using particle pinning. For a finite concentration of pinned particles the correlation length is bounded by the average distance between pinned particles, but without pinning it is bounded by the sys…
We study thermal effects on pinning and creep in type-II superconductors where vortices interact with a low density $n_p$ of strong point-like defects with pinning energy $e_p$ and extension $ξ$, the vortex core size. Defects are classified as strong if the interaction between a single pin and an individual vortex leads to the appearance of bistable solutions describing pinned and free vortex configurations. Extending the strong pinning theory to account for thermal fluctuations, we provide a quantitative analysis of vortex depinning and creep. We determine the thermally activated transitions …
It is frequently assumed that in the limit of vanishing cooling rate, the glass transition phenomenon becomes a thermodynamic transition at a temperature $T_{K}$. However, with any finite cooling rate, the system falls out of equilibrium at temperatures near $T_g(>T_{K})$, implying that the very existence of the putative thermodynamic phase transition at $T_{K}$ can be questioned. Recent studies of systems with randomly pinned particles have hinted that the thermodynamic glass transition may be observed in simulations and experiments carried out for liquids with randomly pinned particles. This…
Local contact line pinning prevents droplets from rearranging to minimal global energy, and models for droplets without pinning cannot predict their shape. We show that experiments are much better described by a theory, developed herein, that does account for the constrained contact line motion, using as example droplets on tilted plates. We map out their shapes in suitable phase spaces. For 2D droplets, the critical point of maximum tilt depends on the hysteresis range and Bond number. In 3D, it also depends on the initial width, highlighting the importance of the deposition history.
We consider a system of hard spheres close to jamming, where translation invariance is broken by pinning a randomly chosen set of particles. Using two different protocols, we generate two kinds of packings at the jamming point, isostatic and hyperstatic packings. In the case where the packings are isostatic, jamming transition is not affected by random pinning: the jamming density is only slightly reduced, a generalized isostaticity condition holds, the system is marginally rigid over the entire glass phase, and the typical structural signatures of jamming are unchanged. Besides, random pinnin…
We model a tridimensional vortex system in a sample with square superficial pinning in the top surface and obtain the ground state structures as a function of the sample thickness. Using a simple Frenkel-Kontorova like model and no adjustable parameters, we reproduce the experimental vortex configurations seen in the bottom surface and their range of stability. We find three phases with two transitions between them, including a continuous one from square to distorted hexagonal structure and a discontinuous one from distorted hexagonal to hexagonal structure.
We show numerically that in a binary system of Yukawa particles, a dispersity driven disordering transition occurs. In the presence of quenched disorder this disordering transition coincides with a marked increase in the depinning threshold, known as a peak effect. We find that the addition of poorly pinned particles can increase the overall pinning in the sample by increasing the amount of topological disorder present. If the quenched disorder is strong enough to create a significant amount of topological disorder in the monodisperse system, addition of a poorly pinned species generates furth…
We study a thermal and a transverse magnetic field response of a vortex line array confined to a plane with a single columnar pinning defect. By integrating out ``bulk'' degrees of freedom away from the columnar defect we reduce this two-dimensional problem to a one-dimensional one, localized on the defect and exhibiting a long-range elasticity along the defect. We show that as a function of temperature, for a magnetic field aligned with the defect this system exhibits a one-dimensional analog of a roughening transition, with a low-temperature ``smooth'' phase corresponding to a vortex array p…
Inert, spherical heterogeneities can pin three-dimensional scroll waves in the excitable Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Three pinning sites cause initially circular rotation backbones to approach equilateral triangles. The resulting stationary shapes show convex deviations that increase with decreasing anchor radii. This dependence is interpreted as a transition between filament termination at large surfaces and true, local pinning of a continuous curve. The shapes of the filament segments are described by a hyperbolic cosine function which is predicted by kinematic theory that considers filam…
We find mode-locking steps in simulated current-voltage characteristics of ac-driven vortex lattices with {\it random} pinning. For low frequencies there is mode-locking above a finite ac force amplitude, while for large frequencies there is mode-locking for any small ac force. This is correlated with the nature of temporal order in the different regimes in the absence of ac drive. The mode-locked state is a frozen solid pinned in the moving reference of frame, and the depinning from the step shows plastic flow and hysteresis.
Using numerical simulations, we have studied the yielding response, in the athermal quasi static limit, of a model amorphous material having inclusions in the form of randomly pinned particles. We show that, with increasing pinning concentration, the plastic activity becomes more spatially localized, resulting in smaller stress drops, and corresponding increase in the magnitude of strain where yielding occurs. We demonstrate that, unlike the spatially heterogeneous and avalanche led yielding in the case of the unpinned glass, for the case of large pinning concentration, yielding takes place vi…
We study numerically the phase diagram and the response under a driving force of the phase field crystal model for pinned lattice systems introduced recently for both one and two dimensional systems. The model describes the lattice system as a continuous density field in the presence of a periodic pinning potential, allowing for both elastic and plastic deformations of the lattice. We first present results for phase diagrams of the model in the absence of a driving force. The nonlinear response to a driving force on an initially pinned commensurate phase is then studied via overdamped dynamic …
We investigate the dynamics of the randomly pinned Fredrickson-Andersen model on the Bethe lattice. We find a line of random pinning dynamical transitions whose dynamical critical properties are in the same universality class of the $A_2$ and $A_3$ transitions of Mode Coupling Theory. The $A_3$ behavior appears at the terminal point, where the relaxation becomes logarithmic and the relaxation time diverges exponentially. We explain the critical behavior in terms of self-induced disorder and avalanches, strengthening the relationship discussed in recent works between glassy dynamics and Random …
The shape of a drop pinned in a local equilibrium on an incline is a long-standing problem. The substrate can be homogeneous or heterogeneous and we herewith consider a drop pinned on an incline at the junction between a hydrophilic half-plane (the top half) and a hydropho-bic one (the bottom half). Relying on the equilibrium equations deriving from the balance of forces, we exhibit three scenarii depending on the way the contact line of the drop on the substrate either simply leans against the junction or overfills (partly or fully) the hydrophobic side. We draw some conclusions on the geomet…
We propose a theoretical framework for the dynamics of bulk isotropic hard-sphere systems in the presence of randomly pinned particles and apply this theory to supercooled water to validate it. Structural relaxation is mainly governed by local and non-local activated process. As the pinned fraction grows, a local caging constraint becomes stronger and the long range collective aspect of relaxation is screened by immobile obstacles. Different responses of the local and cooperative motions results in subtle predictions for how the alpha relaxation time varies with pinning and density. Our theore…
We investigate interactions between an elastic membrane and a substrate characterized by quenched positional disorder in the height function. We show that the positional disorder transforms the standard secondary DLVO minimum into two separate states: the hovering state characterized by a planar membrane at a finite separation from the interface and a pinned state where the membrane follows closely the asperities of the substrate and is as a consequence quite corrugated. The transition between the two states is continuous and depends on the parameters of the underlying DLVO potential as well a…
