We study fragmentation trees of Gibbs type. In the binary case, we identify the most general Gibbs-type fragmentation tree with Aldous' beta-splitting model, which has an extended parameter range $β>-2$ with respect to the ${\rm beta}(β+1,β+1)$ probability distributions on which it is based. In the multifurcating case, we show that Gibbs fragmentation trees are associated with the two-parameter Poisson--Dirichlet models for exchangeable random partitions of $\mathbb {N}$, with an extended parameter range $0\leα\le1$, $θ\ge-2α$ and $α<0$, $θ=-mα$, $m\in \mathbb {N}$.
Gibbs partitions of the integers generated by stable subordinators of index $α\in(0,1)$ form remarkable classes of random partitions where in principle much is known about their properties, including practically effortless obtainment of otherwise complex asymptotic results potentially relevant to applications in general combinatorial stochastic processes, random tree/graph growth models and Bayesian statistics. This class includes the well-known models based on the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution which forms the bulk of explicit applications. This work continues efforts to provide…
In this paper we study random partitions of 1,...n, where every cluster of size j can be in any of w\_j possible internal states. The Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution is obtained by sampling uniformly among such partitions with k clusters. We provide conditions on the weight sequence w allowing construction of a partition valued random process where at step k the state has the Gibbs (n,k,w) distribution, so the partition is subject to irreversible fragmentation as time evolves. For a particular one-parameter family of weight sequences w\_j, the time-reversed process is the discrete Marcus-Lushnikov …
Given a general critical or sub-critical branching mechanism and its associated Lévy continuum random tree, we consider a pruning procedure on this tree using a Poisson snake. It defines a fragmentation process on the tree. We compute the family of dislocation measures associated with this fragmentation. This work generalizes the work made for a Brownian tree [Abraham, Serlet] and for a tree without Brownian part [Abraham, Delmas].
Pitman(2003)(and subsequently Gnedin and Pitman (2006) showed that a large class of random partitions of the integers derived from a stable subordinator of index $α\in(0,1)$ have infinite Gibbs (product) structure as a characterizing feature. The most notable case are random partitions derived from the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet distribution, $\mathrm{PD}(α,θ)$, which are induced by mixing over variables with generalized Mittag-Leffler distributions, denoted by $\mathrm{ML}(α,θ).$ Our aim in this work is to provide indications on the utility of the wider class of Gibbs partitions as it re…
We show that the genealogy of any self-similar fragmentation process can be encoded in a compact measured real tree. Under some Malthusian hypotheses, we compute the fractal Hausdorff dimension of this tree through the use of a natural measure on the set of its leaves. This generalizes previous work of Haas and Miermont which was restricted to conservative fragmentation processes.
We study Gibbs properties of the fuzzy Potts model in the mean field case (i.e on a complete graph) and on trees. For the mean field case, a complete characterization of the set of temperatures for which non-Gibbsianness happens is given. The results for trees are somewhat less explicit, but we do show for general trees that non-Gibbsianness of the fuzzy Potts model happens exactly for those temperatures where the underlying Potts model has multiple Gibbs measures.
The basic object we consider is a certain model of continuum random tree, called the stable tree. We construct a fragmentation process $(F^-(t), t>=0)$ out of this tree by removing the vertices located under height $t$. Thanks to a self-similarity property of the stable tree, we show that the fragmentation process is also self-similar. The semigroup and other features of the fragmentation are given explicitly. Asymptotic results are given, as well as a couple of related results on continuous-state branching processes.
We encode a certain class of stochastic fragmentation processes, namely self-similar fragmentation processes with a negative index of self-similarity, into a metric family tree which belongs to the family of Continuum Random Trees of Aldous. When the splitting times of the fragmentation are dense near 0, the tree can in turn be encoded into a continuous height function, just as the Brownian Continuum Random Tree is encoded in a normalized Brownian excursion. Under mild hypotheses, we then compute the Hausdorff dimensions of these trees, and the maximal Hölder exponents of the height functions.
We study Gibbsian models of unbounded integer-valued spins on trees which possess a symmetry under height-shift. We develop a theory relating boundary laws to gradient Gibbs measures, which applies also in cases where the corresponding Gibbs measures do not exist. Our results extend the classical theory of Zachary beyond the case of normalizable boundary laws, which implies existence of Gibbs measures, to periodic boundary laws. We provide a construction for classes of tree-automorphism invariant gradient Gibbs measures in terms of mixtures of pinned measures, whose marginals to infinite paths…
We consider the ferromagnetic n.n Ising model on Cayley trees in absence of external fields submitted to a modified majority rule transformation with overlapping cells already known to lead to non-Gibbsian measures. We describe the renormalized measures within the Generalized Gibbs framework and prove that they are Almost Gibbs at any temperature.
We model the growth of a cell population by a piecewise deterministic Markov branching tree. Each cell splits into two offsprings at a division rate $B(x)$ that depends on its size $x$. The size of each cell grows exponentially in time, at a rate that varies for each individual. We show that the mean empirical measure of the model satisfies a growth-fragmentation type equation if structured in both size and growth rate as state variables. We construct a nonparametric estimator of the division rate $B(x)$ based on the observation of the population over different sampling schemes of size $n$ on …
In this paper, we consider the Potts-SOS model where the spin takes values in the set $\{0, 1, 2\}$ on the Cayley tree of order two. We describe all the translation-invariant splitting Gibbs measures for this model in some conditions. Moreover, we investigate whether these Gibbs measures are extremal or non-extremal in the set of all Gibbs measures.
We study a natural fragmentation process of the so-called stable tree introduced by Duquesne and Le Gall, which consists in removing the nodes of the tree according to a certain procedure that makes the fragmentation self-similar with positive index. Explicit formulas for the semigroup are given, and we provide asymptotic results. We also give an alternative construction of this fragmentation, using paths of Levy processes, hence echoing the two alternative constructions of the standard additive coalescent by fragmenting the Brownian continuum random tree or using Brownian paths, respectively …
We extend results of R. Holley beyond the integer lattice to a large class of groups which includes free groups. In particular we show that a shift-invariant measure is Gibbs if and only if it is Glauber-invariant. Moreover, any shift-invariant measure converges weakly to the set of Gibbs measures when evolved under Glauber dynamics. These results are proven using a new notion of free energy density relative to a sofic approximation by homomorphisms. Any measure which minimizes free energy density is Gibbs.
We provide information about the asymptotic regimes for a homogeneous fragmentation of a finite set. We establish a phase transition for the asymptotic behaviours of the shattering times, defined as the first instants when all the blocks of the partition process have cardinality less than a fixed integer. Our results may be applied to the study of certain random split trees.
Given any regularly varying dislocation measure, we identify a natural self-similar fragmentation tree as scaling limit of discrete fragmentation trees with unit edge lengths. As an application, we obtain continuum random tree limits of Aldous's beta-splitting models and Ford's alpha models for phylogenetic trees. This confirms in a strong way that the whole trees grow at the same speed as the mean height of a randomly chosen leaf.
Similarly as in (Blancas et al. 2018) where nested coalescent processes are studied, we generalize the definition of partition-valued homogeneous Markov fragmentation processes to the setting of nested partitions, i.e. pairs of partitions $(ζ,ξ)$ where $ζ$ is finer than $ξ$. As in the classical univariate setting, under exchangeability and branching assumptions, we characterize the jump measure of nested fragmentation processes, in terms of erosion coefficients and dislocation measures. Among the possible jumps of a nested fragmentation, three forms of erosion and two forms of dislocation are …
In this paper we study homogeneous Gibbs measures on a Cayley tree, subjected to an infinite-temperature Glauber evolution, and consider their (non-)Gibbsian properties. We show that the intermediate Gibbs state (which in zero field is the free-boundary-condition Gibbs state) behaves different from the plus and the minus state. E.g. at large times, all configurations are bad for the intermediate state, whereas the plus configuration never is bad for the plus state. Moreover, we show that for each state there are two transitions. For the intermediate state there is a transition from a Gibbsian …
In this paper we give a systematic review of the theory of Gibbs measures of Potts model on Cayley trees (developed since 2013) and discuss many applications of the Potts model to real world situations: mainly biology, physics, and some examples of alloy behavior, cell sorting, financial engineering, flocking birds, flowing foams, image segmentation, medicine, sociology etc.
We consider the soft-core Widom-Rowlinson model for particles with spins and holes, on a Cayley tree of order $d$ (which has $d + 1$ nearest neighbours), depending on repulsion strength $β$ between particles of different signs and on an activity parameter $λ$ for particles. We analyse Gibbsian properties of the time-evolved intermediate Gibbs measure of the static model, under a spin-flip time evolution, in a regime of large repulsion strength $β$. We first show that there is a dynamical transition, in which the measure becomes non-Gibbsian at large times, independently of the particle activit…
In this paper, we consider Vannimenus model with competing nearest-neighbors and prolonged next-nearest-neighbors interactions on a Cayley tree. For this model we define Markov random fields with memory of length 2. By using a new approach, we obtain new sets of Gibbs measures of Ising-Vannimenus model on Cayley tree of order 2. We construct the recurrence equations corresponding Ising-Vannimenus model. We prove the Kolmogorov consistency condition. We investigate the translation-invariant and periodic non transition-invariant Gibbs measures for the model. We find new sets of Gibbs measures di…
We consider the model of Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree. For every $r\geq 0$ and every connected component of the set of points where Brownian motion is greater than $r$, we define the boundary size of this component, and we then show that the collection of these boundary sizes evolves when $r$ varies like a well-identified growth-fragmentation process. We then prove that the same growth-fragmentation process appears when slicing a Brownian disk at height $r$ and considering the perimeters of the resulting connected components.
We provide a new geometric representation of a family of fragmentation processes by nested laminations, which are compact subsets of the unit disk made of noncrossing chords. We specifically consider a fragmentation obtained by cutting a random stable tree at random points, which split the tree into smaller subtrees. When coding each of these cutpoints by a chord in the unit disk, we separate the disk into smaller connected components, corresponding to the smaller subtrees of the initial tree. This geometric point of view allows us in particular to highlight a new relation between the Aldous-P…
In a recent paper by A. Backhausz, B. Gerencsér and V. Harangi, it was shown that factors of independent identically distributed random processes (IID) on trees obey certain geometry-driven inequalities. In particular, the mutual information shared between two vertices decays exponentially, and there is an explicit bound for this decay. In this note we show that all of these inequalities could be verbatim translated to the setting of factors of processes driven by unique Gibbs measures. As a consequence, we show that correlations decay exponentially for unique Gibbs measures on trees.
Consider a statistical physical model on the $d$-regular infinite tree $T_{d}$ described by a set of interactions $Φ$. Let $\{G_{n}\}$ be a sequence of finite graphs with vertex sets $V_n$ that locally converge to $T_{d}$. From $Φ$ one can construct a sequence of corresponding models on the graphs $G_n$. Let $\{μ_n\}$ be the resulting Gibbs measures. Here we assume that $\{μ_{n}\}$ converges to some limiting Gibbs measure $μ$ on $T_{d}$ in the local weak$^*$ sense, and study the consequences of this convergence for the specific entropies $|V_n|^{-1}H(μ_n)$. We show that the limit supremum of $…
In this paper, we consider the Ising-Vanniminus model on an arbitrary order Cayley tree. We generalize the results conjectured in [Chinese Journal of Physics, 54 (4), 635-649 (2016)] and [International Journal of Modern Physics, arXiv:1608.06178] for an arbitrary order Cayley tree. We establish existence and a full classification of translation invariant Gibbs measures with memory of length 2 associated with the model on arbitrary order Cayley tree. We construct the recurrence equations corresponding generalized ANNNI model. We satisfy the Kolmogorov \emph{consistency} condition. We propose a …
We consider a random process on recursive trees, with three types of events. Vertices give birth at a constant rate (growth), each edge may be removed independently (fragmentation of the tree) and clusters (or trees) are frozen with a rate proportional to their sizes (isolation of connected component). A phase transition occurs when the isolation is able to stop the growth fragmentation process and cause extinction. When the process survives, the number of clusters increases exponentially and we prove that the normalized empirical measure of clusters a.s. converges to a limit law on recursive …
We consider a natural destruction process of an infinite recursive tree by removing each edge after an independent exponential time. The destruction up to time t is encoded by a partition $Π$(t) of N into blocks of connected vertices. Despite the lack of exchangeability, just like for an exchangeable fragmentation process, the process $Π$ is Markovian with transitions determined by a splitting rates measure r. However, somewhat surprisingly, r fails to fulfill the usual integrability condition for the dislocation measure of exchangeable fragmentations. We further observe that a time-dependent …
We study a fragmentation of the $\mathbf p$-trees of Camarri and Pitman [Elect. J. Probab., vol. 5, pp. 1--18, 2000]. We give exact correspondences between the $\mathbf p$-trees and trees which encode the fragmentation. We then use these results to study the fragmentation of the ICRTs (scaling limits of $\mathbf p$-trees) and give distributional correspondences between the ICRT and the tree encoding the fragmentation. The theorems for the ICRT extend the ones by Bertoin and Miermont [Ann. Appl. Probab., vol. 23(4), pp. 1469--1493, 2013] about the cut tree of the Brownian continuum random tree.
We study a random fragmentation process and its associated random tree. The process has earlier been studied by Dean and Majumdar (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., vol. 35, L501--L507), who found a phase transition: the number of fragmentations is asymptotically normal in some cases but not in others, depending on the position of roots of a certain characteristic equation. This parallels the behaviour of discrete analogues with various random trees that have been studied in computer science. We give rigorous proofs of this phase transition, and add further details. The proof uses the contraction method…
Kittel's 1D model represents a natural DNA with two strands as a (molecular) zipper, which may separated as the temperature is varied. We define multidimensional version of this model on a Cayley tree and study the set of Gibbs measures. We reduce description of Gibbs measures to solving of a non-linear functional equation, with unknown functions (called boundary laws) defined on vertices of the Cayley tree. Each boundary law defines a Gibbs measure. We give general formula of free energy depending on the boundary law. Moreover, we find some concrete boundary laws and corresponding Gibbs measu…
We consider $\mathbb Z$-valued $p$-SOS-models with nearest neighbor interactions of the form $|ω_v-ω_w|^p$, and finite-spin ferromagnetic models on regular trees. This includes the classical SOS-model, the discrete Gaussian model and the Potts model. We exhibit a family of extremal inhomogeneous (i.e. tree automorphism non-invariant) Gibbs measures arising as low temperature perturbations of ground states (local energy minimizers), which have a sparse enough set of broken bonds together with uniformly bounded increments along them. These low temperature states in general do not possess any sym…
We study fragmentation of a random recursive tree into a forest by repeated removal of nodes. The initial tree consists of N nodes and it is generated by sequential addition of nodes with each new node attaching to a randomly-selected existing node. As nodes are removed from the tree, one at a time, the tree dissolves into an ensemble of separate trees, namely, a forest. We study statistical properties of trees and nodes in this heterogeneous forest, and find that the fraction of remaining nodes m characterizes the system in the limit N --> infty. We obtain analytically the size density phi_s …
Consider the Aldous--Pitman fragmentation process [Ann Probab, 26(4):1703--1726, 1998] of a Brownian continuum random tree ${\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}}$. The associated cut tree cut$({\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}})$, introduced by Bertoin and Miermont [Ann Appl Probab, 23:1469--1493, 2013], is defined in a measurable way from the fragmentation process, describing the genealogy of the fragmentation, and is itself distributed as a Brownian CRT. In this work, we introduce a shuffle transform, which can be considered as the reverse of the map taking ${\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}}$ to cut$({\cal T}^{\mathrm{br}})$.
We show that the $4$-state anti-ferromagnetic Potts model with interaction parameter $w\in(0,1)$ on the infinite $(d+1)$-regular tree has a unique Gibbs measure if $w\geq 1-\frac{4}{d+1}$ for all $d\geq 4$. This is tight since it is known that there are multiple Gibbs measures when $0\leq w<1-\frac{4}{d+1}$ and $d\geq 4$. We moreover give a new proof of the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure for the $3$-state Potts model on the $(d+1)$-regular tree for $w\geq 1-\frac{3}{d+1}$ when $d\geq 3$ and for $w\in (0,1)$ when $d=2$.
A Markov Additive Process is a bi-variate Markov process $(ξ,J)=\big((ξ_t,J_t),t\geq0\big)$ which should be thought of as a multi-type Lévy process: the second component $J$ is a Markov chain on a finite space $\{1,\ldots,K\}$, and the first component $ξ$ behaves locally as a Lévy process, with local dynamics depending on $J$. In the subordinator-like case where $ξ$ is nondecreasing, we establish several results concerning the moments of $ξ$ and of its exponential functional $I_ξ=\int_{0}^{\infty} e^{-ξ_t}\mathrm dt,$ extending the work of Carmona et al., and Bertoin and Yor. We then apply the…
We consider a family of fragmentation processes where the rate at which a particle splits is proportional to a function of its mass. Let $F\_{1}^{(m)}(t),F\_{2}^{(m)}(t),...$ denote the decreasing rearrangement of the masses present at time $t$ in a such process, starting from an initial mass $m$. Let then $m\to \infty $. Under an assumption of regular variation type on the dynamics of the fragmentation, we prove that the sequence $(F\_{2}^{(m)},F\_{3}^{(m)},...)$ converges in distribution, with respect to the Skorohod topology, to a fragmentation with immigration process. This holds jointly w…
We consider the height process of a Lévy process with no negative jumps, and its associated continuous tree representation. Using tools developed by Duquesne and Le Gall, we construct a fragmentation process at height, which generalizes the fragmentation at height of stable trees given by Miermont. In this more general framework, we recover that the dislocation measures are the same as the dislocation measures of the fragmentation at node introduced by Abraham and Delmas, up to a factor equal to the fragment size. We also compute the asymptotic for the number of small fragments.
In this paper we investigate generalized Gibbs measure (GGM) for $p$-adic Hard-Core(HC) model with a countable set of spin values on a Cayley tree of order $k\geq 2$. This model is defined by $p$-adic parameters $λ_i$, $i\in \mathbb N$. We analyze $p$-adic functional equation which provides the consistency condition for the finite-dimensional generalized Gibbs distributions. Each solutions of the functional equation defines a GGM by $p$-adic version of Kolmogorov's theorem. We define $p$-adic Gibbs distributions as limit of the consistent family of finite-dimensional generalized Gibbs distribu…
We develop some theory of spinal decompositions of discrete and continuous fragmentation trees. Specifically, we consider a coarse and a fine spinal integer partition derived from spinal tree decompositions. We prove that for a two-parameter Poisson--Dirichlet family of continuous fragmentation trees, including the stable trees of Duquesne and Le Gall, the fine partition is obtained from the coarse one by shattering each of its parts independently, according to the same law. As a second application of spinal decompositions, we prove that among the continuous fragmentation trees, stable trees a…
In this paper we give a new example of duality between fragmentation and coagulation operators. Consider the space of partitions of mass (i.e., decreasing sequences of nonnegative real numbers whose sum is 1) and the two-parameter family of Poisson--Dirichlet distributions $\operatorname {PD}(α,θ)$ that take values in this space. We introduce families of random fragmentation and coagulation operators $\mathrm {Frag}_α$ and $\mathrm {Coag}_{α,θ}$, respectively, with the following property: if the input to $\mathrm {Frag}_α$ has $\operatorname {PD}(α,θ)$ distribution, then the output has $\opera…
We consider a discrete-time Markov chain, called fragmentation process, that describes a specific way of successively removing objects from a linear arrangement. The process arises in population genetics and describes the ancestry of the genetic material of individuals in a population experiencing recombination. We aim at the law of the process over time. To this end, we investigate sets of realisations of this process that agree with respect to a specific order of events and represent each such set by a rooted (binary) tree. The probability of each tree is, in turn, obtained by Möbius inversi…
We consider nearest-neighbor fertile hard-core models, with three states, on a homogeneous Cayley tree. It is known that there are four type of such models. We investigate all of them and describe translation-invariant and periodic hard-core Gibbs measures. Also we construct a continuum set of non-periodic Gibbs measures.
We consider a nearest-neighbor SOS model, spin values $0,1,..., m$, $m\geq 2$, on a Cayley tree of order $k$ . We mainly assume that $m=2$ and study translation-invariant (TI) and `splitting' (S) Gibbs measures (GMs). For $m=2$, in the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) case, a symmetric TISGM is unique for all temperatures. In the ferromagnetic (FM) case, for $m=2$, the number of symmetric TISGMs varies with the temperature: here we identify a critical inverse temperature, $β^1_{\rm{cr}}$ ($=T_{\rm{cr}}^{\rm{STISG}}$) $\in (0,\infty)$ such that $\forall$ $0\leq β\leqβ^1_{\rm{cr}}$, there exists a uniqu…
