One limit to the fidelity of quantum logic operations on trapped ions arises from heating of the ions' collective modes of motion. Sympathetic cooling of the ions during the logic operations may eliminate this source of errors. We discuss benefits and drawbacks of this proposal, and describe possible experimental implementations. We also present an overview of trapped-ion dynamics in this scheme.
We review the current status of the field of sympathetically cooled molecular ions, i.e. the method used for cooling the translational degrees of freedom, the techniques applied for detection and analysis of the cold trapped ion ensembles produced as well as first applications. We summarize a few salient results and point out various possibilities for future developments.
We demonstrate sympathetic cooling of a 43Ca+ trapped-ion "memory" qubit by a 40Ca+ "coolant" ion near the ground state of both axial motional modes, whilst maintaining coherence of the qubit. This is an essential ingredient in trapped-ion quantum computers. The isotope shifts are sufficient to suppress decoherence and phase shifts of the memory qubit due to the cooling light which illuminates both ions. We measure the qubit coherence during 10 cycles of sideband cooling, finding a coherence loss of 3.3% per cooling cycle. The natural limit of the method is O(0.01%) infidelity per cooling cycl…
We demonstrate rotational excitation of molecular ions that are sympathetically cooled by laser-cooled atomic ions to a temperature as low as ca. 10 mK. The molecular hydrogen ions HD+ and the fundamental rotational transition $(v=0,\, N=0)\rightarrow(v'=0,\, N'=1)$ at 1.3 THz, the most fundamental dipole-allowed rotational transition of any molecule, are used as a test case. This transition is here observed for the first time directly. Rotational laser cooling was employed in order to increase the signal, and resonance-enhanced multiphoton dissociation was used as detection method. The black-…
Current precision experiments with single (anti)protons to test CPT symmetry progress at a rapid pace, but are complicated by the need to cool particles to sub-thermal energies. We describe a cryogenic Penning-trap setup for $^9$Be$^+$ ions designed to allow coupling of single (anti)protons to laser-cooled atomic ions for sympathetic cooling and quantum logic spectroscopy. We report on trapping and laser cooling of clouds and single $^9$Be$^+$ ions. We discuss prospects for a microfabricated trap to allow coupling of single (anti)protons to laser-cooled $^9$Be$^+$ ions for sympathetic laser co…
We sympathetically cool a trapped 112Cd+ ion by directly Doppler-cooling a 114Cd+ ion in the same trap. This is the first demonstration of optically addressing a single trapped ion being sympathetically cooled by a different species ion. Notably, the experiment uses a single laser source, and does not require strong focusing. This paves the way toward reducing decoherence in an ion trap quantum computer based on Cd+ isotopes.
We measured by laser spectroscopy the isotope shifts between naturally-occurring even-isotopes of strontium ions for both the $5s\,\,^2S_{1/2}\to 5p\,\,^2P_{1/2}$ (violet) and the $4d\,\,^2D_{3/2}\to 5p\,\,^2P_{1/2}$ (infrared) dipole-allowed optical transitions. Fluorescence spectra were taken by simultaneous measurements on a two-component Coulomb crystal in a linear Paul trap containing $10^3$--$10^4$ laser-cooled Sr$^+$ ions. The isotope shifts are extracted from the experimental spectra by fitting the data with the analytical solution of the optical Bloch equations describing a three-leve…
We demonstrate millikelvin thermometry of laser cooled trapped ions with high-resolution imaging. This equilibrium approach is independent of the cooling dynamics and has lower systematic error than Doppler thermometry, with \pm5 mK accuracy and \pm1 mK precision. We used it to observe highly anisotropic dynamics of a single ion, finding temperatures of < 60 mK and > 15 K simultaneously along different directions. This thermometry technique can offer new insights into quantum systems sympathetically cooled by ions, including atoms, molecules, nanomechanical oscillators, and electric circuits.
The major challenges to fabricate quantum processors and future nano solid state devices are material modification techniques with nanometre resolution and suppression of statistical fluctuations of dopants or qubit carriers. Based on a segmented ion trap with mK laser cooled ions we have realized a deterministic single ion source which could operate with a huge range of sympathetically cooled ion species, isotopes or ionic molecules. We have deterministically extracted a predetermined number of ions on demand and have measured a longitudinal velocity uncertainty of 6.3m/s and a spatial beam d…
We report the experimental characterization of axialization - a method of reducing the magnetron motion of a small number of ions stored in a Penning trap. This is an important step in the investigation of the suitability of Penning traps for quantum information processing. The magnetron motion was coupled to the laser-cooled modified cyclotron motion by the application of a near-resonant oscillating quadrupole potential (the "axialization drive"). Measurement of cooling rates of the radial motions of the ions showed an order-of-magnitude increase in the damping rate of the magnetron motion wi…
We demonstrate coupling between the motions of two independently trapped ions with a separation distance of 620 $μ$m. The ion-ion interaction is enhanced via a room-temperature electrically floating metallic wire which connects two surface traps. Tuning the motion of both ions into resonance, we show flow of energy with a coupling rate of 11 Hz. Quantum-coherent coupling is hindered by strong surface electric-field noise in our device. Our ion wire-ion system demonstrates that room-temperature conductors can be used to mediate and tune interactions between independently trapped charges over di…
Individual trapped atomic qubits represent one of the most promising technologies to scale quantum computers, owing to their negligible idle errors and the ability to implement a full set of reconfigurable gate operations via focused optical fields. However, the fidelity of quantum gate operations can be limited by weak confinement of the atoms transverse to the laser. We present measurements of this effect by performing individually-addressed entangling gates in chains of up to 25 trapped atomic ions that are weakly confined along the chain axis. We present a model that accurately describes t…
The translational motion of molecular ions can be effectively cooled sympathetically to temperatures below 100 mK in ion traps through Coulomb interactions with laser-cooled atomic ions. The distribution of internal rovibrational states, however, gets in thermal equilibrium with the typically much higher temperature of the environment within tens of seconds. We consider a concept for rotational cooling of such internally hot, but translationally cold heteronuclear diatomic molecular ions. The scheme relies on a combination of optical pumping from a few specific rotational levels into a ``dark …
We study experimentally and theoretically discrete solitons in crystalline structures consisting of several tens of laser-cooled ions confined in a radiofrequency trap. Resonantly exciting localized, spectrally gapped vibrational modes of the soliton, a nonlinear mechanism leads to a nonequilibrium steady state of the continuously cooled crystal. We find that the propagation and the escape of the soliton out of its a quasi-one-dimensional channel can be described as a thermal activation mechanism. We control the effective temperature of the soliton's collective coordinate by the amplitude of t…
We present studies of mixed Coulomb crystals of 40Ca+ and 40Ca2+ ions in a linear Paul trap. Doubly charged ions are produced by photoionisation of trapped 40Ca+ with a vacuum ultraviolet laser source and sympathetically cooled via Doppler cooled 40Ca+ ions. We investigate experimentally and theoretically the structural configurations and the vibrational modes of these mixed crystals. Our results with 40Ca2+ are an important step towards experimental realization of the proposals for mode shaping in a linear crystal and spin-dependent configuration changes from zigzag to linear as proposed by L…
We have studied the dynamics of one and two laser-cooled trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions by applying electric fields of different nature along the axial direction of the trap, namely, driving the motion with a harmonic dipolar field, or with white noise. These two types of driving induce distinct motional states of the axial modes; a coherent oscillation with the dipolar field, or an enhanced Brownian motion due to an additional contribution to the heating rate from the electric noise. In both scenarios, the sensitivity of an isolated ion and a laser-cooled two-ion crystal has been evaluated and co…
We investigate the dynamics of an ion sympathetically cooled by another laser-cooled ion or small ion crystal. To this end, we develop simple models of the cooling dynamics in the limit of weak Coulomb interactions. Experimentally, we create a two-ion crystal of Ca$^+$ and Al$^+$ by photo-ionization of neutral atoms produced by laser ablation. We characterize the velocity distribution of the laser-ablated atoms crossing the trap by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. We observe neutral atom velocities much higher than the ones of thermally heated samples and find as a consequence long sym…
Trapped, laser-cooled atoms and ions are quantum systems which can be experimentally controlled with an as yet unmatched degree of precision. Due to the control of the motion and the internal degrees of freedom, these quantum systems can be adequately described by a well known Hamiltonian. In this colloquium, we present powerful numerical tools for the optimization of the external control of the motional and internal states of trapped neutral atoms, explicitly applied to the case of trapped laser-cooled ions in a segmented ion-trap. We then delve into solving inverse problems, when optimizing …
Trapped atomic ions have become one of the most promising architectures for a quantum computer, and current effort is now devoted to the transport of trapped ions through complex segmented ion trap structures in order to scale up to much larger numbers of trapped ion qubits. This paper covers several important issues relevant to ion transport in any type of complex multidimensional rf (Paul) ion trap array. We develop a general theoretical framework for the application of time-dependent electric fields to shuttle laser-cooled ions along any desired trajectory, and describe a method for determi…
We report the design and experimental demonstration of a compact, reconfigurable Penning ion trap constructed with rare-earth permanent magnets placed outside of a trap vacuum enclosure. We describe the first observation of Doppler laser cooling of ions in a permanent magnet Penning trap. We detail a method for quantifying and optimizing the trap magnetic field uniformity in situ using a thermal beam of neutral $^{40}$Ca precursor atoms. Doppler laser cooling of $^{40}$Ca$^+$ is carried out at 0.65~T, and side-view images of trapped ion fluorescence show crystalline order for both two- and thr…
We present a novel method of performing quantum logic gates in trapped ion quantum computers which does not require the ions to be cooled down to their vibrational center of mass (CM) mode ground state. Our scheme employs adiabatic passages and the conditional phase shift first investigated by D'Helon and Milburn (C.~D'Helon and G.J.~Milburn, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 54}, 5141 (1996)).
We propose to use a large cloud of cold trapped ions as a medium for quantum optics and quantum information experiments. Contrary to most recent realizations of qubit manipulation based on a small number of trapped and cooled ions, we study the case of traps containing a macroscopic number of ions. We consider in particular the implementation of a quantum memory for quantum information stored in continuous variables and study the impact of the relevant physical parameters on the expected performances of the system.
Individual electrodynamically trapped and laser cooled ions are addressed in frequency space using radio-frequency radiation in the presence of a static magnetic field gradient. In addition, an interaction between motional and spin states induced by an rf field is demonstrated employing rf-optical double resonance spectroscopy. These are two essential experimental steps towards realizing a novel concept for implementing quantum simulations and quantum computing with trapped ions.
We describe a simplified scheme for quantum logic with a collection of laser-cooled trapped atomic ions. Building on the scheme of Cirac and Zoller, we show how the fundamental controlled-NOT gate between a collective mode of ion motion and the internal states of a single ion can be reduced to a single laser pulse, and the need for a third auxiliary internal electronic state can be eliminated.
Atomic systems in regular lattices are intriguing systems for implementing ideas in quantum simulation and information processing. Focusing on laser cooled ions forming Wigner crystals in Penning traps, we find a robust and simple approach to engineering non-trivial 2-body interactions sufficient for universal quantum computation. We then consider extensions of our approach to the fast generation of large cluster states, and a non-local architecture using an asymmetric entanglement generation procedure between a Penning trap system and well-established linear Paul trap designs.
Precision optical spectroscopy of exotic ions reveals accurate information about nuclear properties such as charge radii and magnetic and quadrupole moments. Thorium ions exhibit unique nuclear properties with high relevance for testing symmetries of nature. We report loading and trapping of single $^{232}$Th$^+$ ions in a linear Paul trap, embedded into and sympathetically cooled by small crystals of trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions. Trapped Th ions are identified in a non-destructive manner from the voids in the laser-induced Ca fluorescence pattern emitted by the crystal, and alternatively, by me…
We demonstrate experimentally how the process of Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) can be utilized for efficient coherent internal state transfer in single trapped and laser-cooled $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions. The transfer from the D$_{3/2}$ to the D$_{5/2}$ state, is detected by a fluorescence measurement revealing the population not transfered to the D$_{5/2}$ state. A coherent population transfer efficiency at the level of 95 % in a setup allowing for the internal state detection of individual ions in a string has been obtained.
We consider a system of laser-cooled ions in a linear harmonic trap and study the phenomenon of squeezing exchange between their internal and motional degrees of freedom. An interesting relation between the quantum noise reduction (squeezing) and the dynamical evolution is found when the internal and motional subsystems are prepared in properly squeezed (intelligent) states. Specifically, the evolution of the system is fully governed by the relative strengths of spectroscopic and motional squeezing, including the phenomenon of total cancellation of the interaction when the initial squeezing pa…

Highly efficient, nearly deterministic, and isotope selective generation of Yb$^+$ ions by 1- and 2-color photoionization is demonstrated. State preparation and state selective detection of hyperfine states in \ybodd is investigated in order to optimize the purity of the prepared state and to time-optimize the detection process. Linear laser cooled Yb$^+$ ion crystals ions confined in a Paul trap are demonstrated. Advantageous features of different previous ion trap experiments are combined while at the same time the number of possible error sources is reduced by using a comparatively simple e…
The control of internal and motional quantum degrees of freedom of laser cooled trapped ions has been subject to intense theoretical and experimental research for about three decades. In the realm of quantum information science the ability to deterministically prepare and measure quantum states of trapped ions is unprecedented. This expertise may be employed to investigate physical models conceived to describe systems that are not directly accessible for experimental investigations. Here, we give an overview of current theoretical proposals and experiments for such quantum simulations with tra…
A single laser-cooled and trapped 9Be+ ion is used to investigate methods of coherent quantum-state synthesis and quantum logic. We create and characterize nonclassical states of motion including "Schroedinger-cat" states. A fundamental quantum logic gate is realized which uses two states of the quantized ion motion and two ion internal states as qubits. We explore some of the applications for, and problems in realizing, quantum computation based on multiple trapped ions.
We propose a practical scheme for implementing two-dimension quantum dense coding (QDC) between three parties through manipulating three ions confined in microtraps addressed by microwaves and assisted by a magnetic field gradient. The ions in our scheme are not required to be strictly cooled to the vibrational ground state because single-qubit and multi-qubit operations are made via Ising terms, in which the vibrational modes of the ions remain unchanged throughout the scheme, rendering our scheme robust to the heating of the ions. We also present the detailed steps and parameters for impleme…
Constructing a large scale ion trap quantum processor will require entangling gate operations that are robust in the presence of noise and experimental imperfection. We experimentally demonstrate how a new type of Mølmer-Sørensen gate protects against infidelity caused by heating of the motional mode used during the gate. Furthermore, we show how the same technique simultaneously provides significant protection against slow fluctuations and mis-sets in the secular frequency. Since this parameter sensitivity is worsened in cases where the ions are not ground state cooled, our method provides a …
We describe a simple approach to the problem of incorporating the response time of an atom or ion being Doppler-cooled into the theory of the cooling process. The system being cooled does not in general respond instantly to the changing laser frequencies it experiences in its rest frame, and this "dynamic effect" can affect significantly the temperatures attainable. It is particularly important for trapped ions when there is a slow decay out of the cooling cycle requiring the use of a repumping beam. We treat the cases of trapped ions with two and three internal states, then apply the theory t…
We demonstrate confinement of individual atomic ions in a radio-frequency Paul trap with a novel geometry where the electrodes are located in a single plane and the ions confined above this plane. This device is realized with a relatively simple fabrication procedure and has important implications for quantum state manipulation and quantum information processing using large numbers of ions. We confine laser-cooled Mg-24 ions approximately 40 micrometer above planar gold electrodes. We measure the ions' motional frequencies and compare them to simulations. From measurements of the escape time o…
We present an alternative scheme for the generation of a 2-qubit quantum gate interaction between laser-cooled trapped ions. The scheme is based on the AC Stark shift (lightshift) induced by laser light resonant with the ionic transition frequency. At {\it specific} laser intensities, the shift of the ionic levels allows the resonant excitation of transitions involving the exchange of motional quanta. We compare the performance of this scheme with respect to that of related ion-trap proposals and find that, for an experimental realisation using travelling-wave radiation and working in the Lamb…

Trapped ions are ideally suited for precision spectroscopy, as is evident from the remarkably low systematic uncertainties of single-ion clocks. The major weakness of these clocks is the long averaging time, necessitated by the low signal of a single atom. An increased number of ions can overcome this limitation and allow for the implementation of novel clock schemes. However, this presents the challenge to maintain the excellent control over systematic shifts of a single particle in spatially extended and strongly coupled many-body systems. We measure and deduce systematic frequency uncertain…
Experimental realizations of charged ions and neutral atoms in overlapping traps are gaining increasing interest due to their wide research application ranging from chemistry at the quantum level to quantum simulations of solid-state systems. Here, we describe a system in which we overlap a single ground-state cooled ion trapped in a linear Paul trap with a cloud of ultracold atoms such that both constituents are in the $μ$K regime. Excess micromotion (EMM) currently limits atom-ion interaction energy to the mK energy scale and above. We demonstrate spectroscopy methods and compensation techni…
Additional radio-frequency (rf) potentials applied to linear multipole traps create extra field nodes in the radial plane which allow one to confine single ions, or strings of ions, in totally rf field-free regions. The number of nodes depends on the order of the applied multipole potentials and their relative distance can be easily tuned by the amplitude variation of the applied voltages. Simulations using molecular dynamics show that strings of ions can be laser cooled down to the Doppler limit in all directions of space. Once cooled, organized systems can be moved with very limited heating,…
A microfabricated phase Fresnel lens was used to image ytterbium ions trapped in a radio frequency Paul trap. The ions were laser cooled close to the Doppler limit on the 369.5 nm transition, reducing the ion motion so that each ion formed a near point source. By detecting the ion fluorescence on the same transition, near diffraction limited imaging with spot sizes of below 440 nm (FWHM) was achieved. This is the first demonstration of imaging trapped ions with a resolution on the order of the transition wavelength.
Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are a platform for several important quantum technologies, including sensing, communication and elementary quantum processors. In this letter we demonstrate the creation of NV centers by implantation using a deterministic single ion source. For this we sympathetically laser-cool single $^{15}\textrm{N}_2^+$ molecular ions in a Paul trap and extract them at an energy of 5.9\,keV. Subsequently the ions are focused with a lateral resolution of 121(35)\,nm and are implanted into a diamond substrate without any spatial filtering by apertures or masks. After …
Radiative emission during cold collisions between trapped laser-cooled Rb atoms and alkaline-earth ions (Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$) and Yb$^+$, and between Li and Yb$^+$, are studied theoretically, using accurate effective-core-potential based quantum chemistry calculations of potential energy curves and transition dipole moments of the related molecular ions. Radiative association of molecular ions is predicted to occur for all systems with a cross section two to ten times larger than the radiative charge transfer one. Partial and total rate constants are also calculated and compared to availabl…
We propose a new method for the production of ultracold molecular ions. This method utilizes sympathetic cooling due to the strong collisions between appropriately chosen molecular ions and laser-cooled neutral atoms to realize ultracold, internal ground-state molecular ions. In contrast to other experiments producing cold molecular ions, our proposed method efficiently cools both the internal and external molecular ion degrees of freedom. The availability of an ultracold, absolute ground-state sample of molecular ions would have broad impact to fields as diverse as quantum chemistry, astrophy…
Most ions lack the fast, cycling transitions that are necessary for direct laser cooling. In most cases, they can still be cooled sympathetically through their Coulomb interaction with a second, coolable ion species confined in the same potential. If the charge-to-mass ratios of the two ion types are too mismatched, the cooling of certain motional degrees of freedom becomes difficult. This limits both the achievable fidelity of quantum gates and the spectroscopic accuracy. Here we introduce a novel algorithmic cooling protocol for transferring phonons from poorly- to efficiently-cooled modes. …
Efficient cooling of trapped charged particles is essential to many fundamental physics experiments, to high-precision metrology, and to quantum technology. Until now, sympathetic cooling has required close-range Coulomb interactions, but there has been a sustained desire to bring laser-cooling techniques to particles in macroscopically separated traps, extending quantum control techniques to previously inaccessible particles such as highly charged ions, molecular ions and antimatter. Here we demonstrate sympathetic cooling of a single proton using laser-cooled Be+ ions in spatially separated …
Hybrid quantum systems that unite laser-cooled trapped ions and ultracold quantum gases in a single experimental setup have opened a rapidly advancing field of study, including Quantum chemistry, polaron physics, quantum information processing and quantum simulations. We present a fully developed and tested ion trap chip and propose a flat chip trap that can be placed beneath the ion trap. This design substantially addresses the difficulties specific to hybrid traps and features well-aligned chips that allow for independent adjustment of the depth of the atomic trap and the confinement and pos…
A mixed system of cooled and trapped, ions and atoms, paves the way for ion assisted cold chemistry and novel many body studies. Due to the different individual trapping mechanisms, trapped atoms are significantly colder than trapped ions, therefore in the combined system, the strong binary ion$-$atom interaction results in heat flow from ions to atoms. Conversely, trapped ions can also get collisionally heated by the cold atoms, making the resulting equilibrium between ions and atoms intriguing. Here we experimentally demonstrate, Rubidium ions (Rb$^+$) cool in contact with magneto-optically …
We realize fast transport of ions in a segmented micro-structured Paul trap. The ion is shuttled over a distance of more than 10^4 times its groundstate wavefunction size during only 5 motional cycles of the trap (280 micro meter in 3.6 micro seconds). Starting from a ground-state-cooled ion, we find an optimized transport such that the energy increase is as low as 0.10 $\pm$ 0.01 motional quanta. In addition, we demonstrate that quantum information stored in a spin-motion entangled state is preserved throughout the transport. Shuttling operations are concatenated, as a proof-of-principle for …
We investigate theoretically the possibility for robust and fast cooling of a trapped atomic ion by transient interaction with a pre-cooled ion. The transient coupling is achieved through dynamical control of the ions' equilibrium positions. To achieve short cooling times we make use of shortcuts to adiabaticity by applying invariant-based engineering. We design these to take account of imperfections such as stray fields, and trap frequency offsets. For settings appropriate to a currently operational trap in our laboratory, we find that robust performance could be achieved down to $6.3$ motion…
We demonstrate photodissociation of BeH$^+$ ions within a Coulomb crystal of thousands of $^9$Be$^+$ ions confined in a Penning trap. Because BeH$^+$ ions are created via exothermic reactions between trapped, laser-cooled Be$^+$($^2\text{P}_{3/2}$) and background H$_2$ within the vacuum chamber, they represent a major contaminant species responsible for infidelities in large-scale trapped-ion quantum information experiments. The rotational-state-insensitive dissociation scheme described here makes use of 157 nm photons to produce Be$^+$ and H as products, thereby restoring Be$^+$ ions without …
Single dopant atoms or dopant-related defect centers in a solid state matrix provide an attractive platform for quantum simulation of topological states, for quantum computing and communication, due to their potential to realize a scalable architecture compatible with electronic and photonic integrated circuits. The production of such quantum devices calls for deterministic single atom doping techniques because conventional stochastic doping techniques are cannot deliver appropriate architectures. Here, we present the fabrication of arrays of praseodymium color centers in YAG substrates, using…
