We show that with an efficiency exceeding 99% one can use a monolithic total-internal-reflection resonator in order to ascertain the presence of an object without transferring a quantum of energy to it. We also propose an experiment on the probabilistic meaning of the electric field that contains only a very few photons.
We propose the use of a superconducting charge qubit capacitively coupled to two resonant nanomechanical resonators to generate Yurke-Stoler states, i.e. quantum superpositions of pairs of distinguishable coherent states 180$^\circ$ out of phase with each other. This is achieved by effectively implementing Kerr nonlinearities induced through application of a strong external driving field in one of the resonators. A simple study of the effect of dissipation on our scheme is also presented, and lower bounds of fidelity and purity of the generated state are calculated. Our procedure to implement …
We employ a more realistic treatment to investigate the entropy and the excitation-inversion of a coupled system that consists of a nanomechanical resonator and a superconducting Cooper pair box. The procedure uses the Buck-Sukumar model in the microwave domain, considers the nanoresonator with a time dependent frequency and both subsystems in the presence of losses. Interesting results were found for the temporal evolutions of the entropy of each subsystem and of the excitation-inversion in the Cooper pair box. A comparison was also performed about which of these two subsystems is more sensit…
We investigate the possibility of achieving the strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics using rare earth ions as impurities in monolithic optical resonators. We conclude that due to the weak oscillator strengths of the rare earths, it may be possible but difficult, to reach the regime where the single photon Rabi frequency is large compared to both the cavity and atom decay rates. However reaching the regime where the saturation photon and atom numbers are less than one should be much more achievable. We show that in this `bad cavity' regime, transfer of quantum states and an …
We address quantitatively the relationship between the nonlinearity of a mechanical resonator and the nonclassicality of its ground state. In particular, we analyze the nonclassical properties of the nonlinear Duffing oscillator (being driven or not) as a paradigmatic example of a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator. We first discuss how to quantify the nonlinearity of this system and then show that the nonclassicality of the ground state, as measured by the volume occupied by the negative part of the Wigner function, monotonically increases with the nonlinearity in all the working regimes addr…
We report on an integrated non-degenerate narrowband photon pair source produced at 890 nm and 1320nm via type II parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled waveguide with high-reflective dielectric mirrors deposited on the waveguide end faces. The conversion spectrum consists of three clusters and only 3 to 4 longitudinal modes with about 150 MHz bandwidth in each cluster. The high conversion efficiency in the waveguide, together with the spectral clustering in the double resonator, leads to a high brightness of $3\times10^3~$pairs/(s$\cdot$mW$\cdot$MHz). The compact and rugged monoli…
Over the past decade, strong interactions of light and matter at the single-photon level have enabled a wide set of scientific advances in quantum optics and quantum information science. This work has been performed principally within the setting of cavity quantum electrodynamics with diverse physical systems, including single atoms in Fabry-Perot resonators, quantum dots coupled to micropillars and photonic bandgap cavities, and Cooper-pairs interacting with superconducting resonators. Experiments with single, localized atoms have been at the forefront of these advances with the use of optica…
We present a theoretical analysis of different methods to synthesize entangled states of two superconducting resonators. These methods use experimentally demonstrated interactions of resonators with artificial atoms, and offer efficient routes to generate nonclassical states. We analyze the theoretical structure of these algorithms and their average performance for arbitrary states and for deterministically preparing NOON states. Using a new state synthesis algorithm, we show that NOON states can be prepared in a time linear in the desired photon number and without any state-selective interact…
Nano- and micromechanical solid-state quantum devices have become a focus of attention. Reliably generating nonclassical states of their motion is of interest both for addressing fundamental questions about macroscopic quantum phenomena and for developing quantum technologies in the domains of sensing and transduction. We used quantum optical control techniques to conditionally generate single-phonon Fock states of a nanomechanical resonator. We performed a Hanbury Brown and Twiss-type experiment that verified the nonclassical nature of the phonon state without requiring full state reconstruct…
We investigate the multi-phonon interactions in a hybrid system composed of a nitrogen-vacancy center and a mechanical resonator. We show that, through appropriate sideband engineering analogy to the Mollow or Lamb-Dicke dynamics, the enhanced nonlinear interactions can dominate the coupled system. As an example, we show the preparation of nonclassical states of the mechanical motion and explore the quantum correlation of $n$-phonon with the engineered dissipation, based on the large multi-phonon coupling strength attainable in this sideband structure. This work takes full advantage of the struc…
Quantum thermal transport and two-photon statistics serve as two representative nonequilibrium features in circuit quantum electrodynamics systems. Here, we investigate quantum heat flow and two-photon correlation function at steady-state in a composite qubit-resonator model, where one qubit shows both transverse and longitudinal couplings to a single-mode optical resonator. With weak qubit-resonator interaction, we unravel two microscopic transport pictures, i.e., cotunneling and cyclic heat exchange processes, corresponding to transverse and longitudinal couplings respectively. At strong qub…
This article reviews recent progress in quasi-phasematched $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear nanophotonics, with a particular focus on dispersion-engineered nonlinear interactions. Throughout this article, we establish design rules for the bandwidth and interaction lengths of various nonlinear processes, and provide examples for how these processes can be engineered in nanophotonic devices. In particular, we apply these rules towards the design of sources of non-classical light and show that dispersion-engineered devices can outperform their conventional counterparts. Examples include ultra-broadband optica…
We report on the generation of nonclassical states of light in a silicon ring resonator in a selfpumping scheme. The ring is inserted in a lasing cavity, for which it acts as a filter, so that the lasing always occurs within a selected ring resonance, without active stabilization of the resonance frequency. We show the emission of coincident photon pairs and study their correlation properties through the reconstruction of the measurements via stimulated emission.
In this paper, we propose a feasible scheme for generating the Schrödinger cat states of a macroscopic mechanical resonator in pulsed cavity optomechanics. Starting with cooling the mechanical oscillator to its ground state, a red and a blue pulses with different powers are simultaneously employed to drive the cavity to achieve squeezed mechanical states. Subsequently, a second red pulse is utilized to generate the macroscopic mechanical quantum superpositions, conditioned on the detection of cavity output photons. Finally, after being stored in the resonator for a period of time, the mechanic…
It is shown that a monolithic total-internal-reflection resonator can be used for energy-exchange-free detections of objects without recoils. Related energy-exchange-free detection of "welcher Weg" is discussed and an experiment with an atom interferometer is proposed. The obtained results are in agreement with quantum theory.
We propose how to create and manipulate one-way nonclassical light via photon blockade in rotating nonlinear devices. We refer to this effect as nonreciprocal photon blockade (PB). Specifically, we show that in a spinning Kerr resonator, PB happens when the resonator is driven in one direction but not the other. This occurs because of the {Fizeau drag,} leading to a full split of the resonance frequencies of the countercirculating modes. Different types of purely quantum correlations, such as single- and two-photon blockades, can emerge in different directions in a well-controlled manner, and …
A single phonon in a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator (NAMR) can block the excitation of a second phonon [Phys. Rev. A 82, 032101 (2010)]. This intrinsically quantum effect is called phonon blockade, and is an analog of Coulomb blockade and photon blockade. Here we predict tunable multiphonon blockade in coupled nonlinear NAMRs, where nonlinearity is induced by two-level systems (TLSs) assuming dispersive (far off-resonance) interactions. Specifically, we derive an effective Kerr-type interaction in a hybrid system consisting of two nonlinearly-interacting NAMRs coupled to two TLSs and drive…
