We report the results of the first investigation on the superradiant temporal and spatial quantum dynamics of two dipoles excited in a planar symmetrical microcavity by a controlled femtosecond two-pulse excitation. A superradiant enhancement of the time decay of the dipole excitation for a decreasing inter-dipole transverse distance R has been found. Furthermore, the photon partition statistics of the emitted field is found to exhibit a striking quantum behaviour for R<lc, the transverse extension of the single allowed microcavity mode.
We consider a semiconductor quantum well in a microcavity driven by coherent light and coupled to a squeezed vacuum reservoir. By systematically solving the pertinent quantum Langevin equations in the strong coupling and low excitation regimes, we study the effect of exciton-photon detuning, external coherent light, and the squeezed vacuum reservoir on vacuum Rabi splitting and on quantum statistical properties of the light emitted by the quantum well. We show that the exciton-photon detuning leads to a shift in polariton resonance frequencies and a decrease in fluorescence intensity. We also …
We study the photon emission from a quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. Incoherent pumping of its excitons and biexciton provokes the emission of leaky and cavity modes. By solving a master equation we obtain the correlation functions required to compute the spectrum and the relative efficiency among the emission of pairs and single photons. A quantum regime appears for low pumping and large rate of emission. By means of a post-selection process, a two beams experiment with different linear polarizations could be performed producing a large polarization entanglement visibility precisely in …

We theoretically analyze the collective dynamics of a thermal beam of atomic dipoles that couple to a single mode when traversing an optical cavity. For this setup we derive a semiclassical model and determine the onset of superradiant emission and its stability. We derive analytical expressions for the linewidth of the emitted light and compare them with numerical simulations. In addition, we find and predict two different superradiant phases; a steady-state superradiant phase and a multi-component superradiant phase. In the latter case we observe sidebands in the frequency spectrum that can …
Quantum fluids of light in a nonlinear planar microcavity can exhibit antibunched photon statistics at short distances due to repulsive polariton interactions. We show that, despite the weakness of the nonlinearity, the antibunching signal can be amplified orders of magnitude with an appropriate free-space optics scheme to select and interfere output modes. Our results are understood from the unconventional photon blockade perspective by analyzing the approximate Gaussian output state of the microcavity. In a second part, we illustrate how the temporal and spatial profile of the density-densit…
A recent experiment demonstrated heterodyne detection-based frequency measurements with superradiant pulses from coherently pumped strontium atoms in an optical lattice clock system, while another experiment has analyzed the statistics of superradiant pulses from incoherently pumped calcium atoms in a similar system. In this article, we propose to perform heterodyne detection of the superradiant pulses from the calcium atoms, and analyze theoretically the corresponding atomic ensemble dynamics in terms of the rotation of a collective spin vector and the incoherent quantum jumps among superradi…
We observe antibunching in the photons emitted from a strongly-coupled single quantum dot and pillar microcavity in resonance. When the quantum dot was spectrally detuned from the cavity mode, the cavity emission remained antibunched, and also anticorrelated from the quantum dot emission. Resonant pumping of the selected quantum dot via an excited state enabled these observations by eliminating the background emitters that are usually coupled to the cavity. This device demonstrates an on-demand single photon source operating in the strong coupling regime, with a Purcell factor of 61 and quantu…
We investigate the resonant quantum dynamics of a laser-pumped real or artificial two-level single-atom system embedded in a leaking microcavity. We found that for stronger laser-atom-cavity couplings the generated microcavity photons exhibit larger steady-state correlations. In particular, the second- and third-order photon correlation functions are greater than the corresponding ones obtained for an incoherent light source, respectively. Furthermore, the emitted microcavity photon flux is enhanced in comparison to weaker coupling cases.
We demonstrate a single-photon source based on a quantum dot in a micropost microcavity that exhibits a large Purcell factor together with a small multi-photon probability. For a quantum dot on resonance with the cavity, the spontaneous emission rate is increased by a factor of five, while the probability to emit two or more photons in the same pulse is reduced to 2% compared to a Poisson-distributed source of the same intensity. In addition to the small multi-photon probability, such a strong Purcell effect is important in a single-photon source for improving the photon outcoupling efficiency…
We report on the realization of a liquid-filled optical microcavity and demonstrate photon-pair generation by spontaneous four-wave mixing. The bandwidth of the emitted photons is $\sim 300$ MHz and we demonstrate tuning of the emission wavelength between 770 and 800 nm. Moreover, by employing a liquid as the nonlinear optical medium completely filling the microcavity, we observe more than a factor $10^3$ increase of the pair correlation rate per unit pump power and a factor of 1.7 improvement in the coincidence/accidental ratio as compared to our previous measurements.
Superradiance is one of the outstanding problems in quantum optics since Dicke introduced the concept of enhanced directional spontaneous emission by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms. The effect is based on correlated collective Dicke states which turn out to be highly entangled. Here we show that enhanced directional emission of spontaneous radiation can be produced also with statistically independent incoherent sources via the measurement of higher order correlation functions of the emitted radiation. Our analysis is applicable to a wide variety of quantum systems like trapped atoms,…
Photonic states with large and fixed photon numbers, such as Fock states, enable quantum-enhanced metrology but remain an experimentally elusive resource. A potentially simple, deterministic and scalable way to generate these states consists of fully exciting $N$ quantum emitters equally coupled to a common photonic reservoir, which leads to a collective decay known as Dicke superradiance. The emitted $N$-photon state turns out to be a highly entangled multimode state, and to characterise its metrological properties in this work we: (i) develop theoretical tools to compute the Quantum Fisher I…
We develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of the quantum coherence of light emitted by two independent single-photon sources in an arbitrary environment. The theory provides design rules for the control of the degree of quantum coherence, in terms of classical quantities widely used in nanophotonics. As an important example, we derive generalized conditions to generate superradiant and subradiant states of the emitters, and demonstrate the ability of a structured environment to induce long-range quantum coherence. These results should have broad applications in quantum nanophotonics,…
We study a dispersion-compensated high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot microcavity under high-intensity cw pumping. The Kerr non-linearity in the optical coatings causes a spontaneous four-wave mixing process, which leads to the emission of time-correlated photon pairs. The photon frequencies are shifted by $\pm 1$ free spectral range relative to the pump frequency. This setup allows for constructing a photon-pair source with precisely adjustable frequency difference between the emitted photons, which may have applications in quantum communication.
Superradiance is the archetypical collective phenomenon where radiation is amplified by the coherence of emitters. It plays a prominent role in optics, where it enables the design of lasers with substantially reduced linewidths, quantum mechanics, and is even used to explain cosmological observations like Hawking radiation from black holes. Hybridization of distinct quantum systems allows to engineer new quantum metamaterials pooling the advantages of the individual systems. Superconducting circuits coupled to spin ensembles are promising future building blocks of integrated quantum devices an…
In this work we have studied the quantum statistical properties of the photon emitted from a driven microcavity embedded with a single armchair-edged graphene nanoribbon (GNR). The system is coherently pumped with weak laser amplitude. Analytical expressions are derived in both strong and weak coupling regimes and the nonclassical proprieties of the emitted field have been investigated. Furthermore, it is concluded that this excitonic system presents several statistical similarities to the atomic system, in particular for the bad-cavity and good-cavity limits in the weak laser amplitude regime…
A simplified theory for the wavepackets of the photons emitted during the read process of a quantum memory formed by cold atoms is provided. We arrive at analytical expressions for the single- and double-photon emissions, evidencing superradiant features in both cases. In the two-photon case, both photons are emitted in the same spatiotemporal mode, characterizing a superradiant emission of a Fock state of light with two excitations. Experiments confirm the theoretical predictions with a satisfactory agreement.
The future of quantum communication systems and quantum networks heavily rely on the ability to fabricate and coherently control the conversion of photons between different modes based on a solid-state plateform. In this work, we propose and theoretically investigate a scheme to optomechanically control coherent mode conversion of optical photons by utilizing two optically coupled hybrid semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot (QD). One of the microcavity is pumped by an external laser and the second cavity is driven by light emitted by the QD that is embedded in the interface sep…
We show that superradiant optical emission can be observed from the polarized nuclear spin ensemble surrounding a single photon emitter such as a single quantum dot (QD) or Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) center. The superradiant light is emitted under optical pumping conditions and would be observable with realistic experimental parameters.
Semiconductor quantum-dot cavity systems are promising sources for solid-state based on-demand generation of single photons for quantum communication. Commonly, the spectral characteristics of the emitted single photon are fixed by system properties such as electronic transition energies and spectral properties of the cavity. In the present work we study single-photon generation from the quantum-dot biexciton through a partly stimulated non-degenerate two-photon emission. We show that frequency and linewidth of the single photon can be fully controlled by the stimulating laser pulse, ultimatel…
Due to its coherence properties and high optical depth, a Bose-Einstein condensate provides an ideal setting to investigate collective atom-light interactions. Superradiant light scattering in a Bose-Einstein condensate is a fascinating example of such an interaction. It is an analogous process to Dicke superradiance, in which an electronically inverted sample decays collectively, leading to the emission of one or more light pulses in a well-defined direction. Through time-resolved measurements of the superradiant light pulses emitted by an end-pumped BEC, we study the close connection of supe…
Dicke superrandiance is a cooperative phenomenon which arises from the collective coupling of an ensemble of atoms to the electromagnetic radiation. Here we discuss the quantifying of quantum coherence for the Dicke model of superradiance in the mean-field approximation. We found the single-atom $l_1$-norm of coherence is given by the square root of the normalized average intensity of radiation emitted by the superradiant system. This validates quantum coherence as a useful figure of merit towards the understanding of superradiance phenomenon in the mean-field approach. In particular, this res…
Strong interaction of a system of quantum emitters (e.g., two-level atoms) with electromagnetic field induces specific correlations in the system accompanied by a drastic insrease of emitted radiation (superradiation or superfluorescence). Despite the fact that since its prediction this phenomenon was subject to a vigorous experimental and theoretical research, there remain open question, in particular, concerning the possibility of a first order phase transition to the superradiant state from the vacuum state. In systems of natural and charge-based artificial atome this transition is prohibit…
We inspect different quantum optical setups from the viewpoint of entanglement generation and detection. As a first step we consider a planar semiconductor microcavity and optimize the Bell-type correlations and their robustness against dephasing to create strong bipartite entanglement between polariton branches, which subsequently can be transfered to the emitted photons. In a second step, in order to create multipartite entangled light, we place the microcavity in an optical resonator driven by pump pulses with a frequency comb spectrum. For this system we show how phase matching of all comb…
Through a non-perturbative quantum theory, we investigate how the quasi-electron excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas are modified by strong coupling to the vacuum field of a microcavity. We show that the electronic dressed states originate from a Fano-like coupling between the bare electron states and the continuum of intersubband cavity polariton excitations. In particular, we calculate the electron spectral function modified by light-matter interactions and its impact on the electronic injection of intersubband cavity polaritons. The domain of validity of the present theoretical re…
Stimulated Raman scattering of atoms with $Λ$-configuration of levels is a promising tool for transducing microwave photons to optical photons. We consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate whose large phase-space density highly amplifies the coupling to the microwave field. Due momentum transfer to the condensate, stimulated photon scattering can occur outside of the phase-matched direction, which can be used to separate the converted photons from the strong Raman readout pulse. Conversely, in the phase-matched direction, superradiant scattering due to bosonic enhancement leads to increased …
The interaction of single quantum emitters with an optical cavity enables the realization of efficient spin-photon interfaces, an essential resource for quantum networks. The dynamical control of the spontaneous emission rate of quantum emitters in cavities has important implications in quantum technologies, e.g. for shaping the emitted photons waveform, for generating quantum entanglement, or for driving coherently the optical transition while preventing photon emission. Here we demonstrate the dynamical control of the Purcell enhanced emission of a small ensemble of erbium ions doped into na…
Superradiance, i.e., spontaneous emission of coherent radiation by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms in collective states introduced by Dicke in 1954, is one of the enigmatic problems of quantum optics. The startling gist is that even though the atoms have no dipole moment they radiate with increased intensity in particular directions. Following the advances in our understanding of superradiant emission by atoms in entangled $W$ states we examine the quantum statistical properties of superradiance. Such investigations require the system to have at least two excitations as one needs to e…
We propose to measure the superradiance effect by observing the current through a semiconductor double-dot ststem. An electron and a hole are injected separately into one of the quantum dots to form an exciton and then recombine radiatively. We find that the stationary current shows oscillatory behavior as one varies the inter-dot distance. The amplitude of oscillation can be increased by incorporating the system into a microcavity. Furthermore, the current is suppressed if the dot distance is small compared to the wavelength of the emitted photon. This photon trapping phenomenon generates the…
In this chapter we will discuss the technology and experimental techniques to realize quantum dot (QD) single photon sources combining high outcoupling efficiencies and highest degrees of non-postselected photon indistinguishability. The system, which is based on ultra low density InAs QDs embedded in a quasi planar single sided microcavity with natural photonic traps is an ideal testbed to study quantum light emission from single QDs. We will discuss the influence of the excitation conditions on the purity of the single photon emission, and in particular on the degree of indistinguishability …
Regular arrays of two-level emitters at distances smaller that the transition wavelength collectively scatter, absorb and emit photons. The strong inter-particle dipole coupling creates large energy shifts of the collective delocalized excitations, which generates a highly nonlinear response at the single and few photon level. This should allow to implement nanoscale non-classical light sources via weak coherent illumination. At the generic tailored examples of regular chains or polygons we show that the fields emitted perpendicular to the illumination direction exhibit a strong directional co…
Ordered atomic arrays trapped in the vicinity of nanoscale waveguides offer original light-matter interfaces, with applications to quantum information and quantum non-linear optics. Here, we study the decay dynamics of a single collective atomic excitation coupled to a waveguide in different configurations. The atoms are arranged as a linear array and only a segment of them is excited to a superradiant mode and emits light into the waveguide. Additional atomic chains placed on one or both sides play a passive role, either reflecting or absorbing this emission. We show that when varying the geo…
We study the quantum state of phonons propagating on top of a fluid of light coherently generated in a planar microcavity device by a quasi-resonant incident laser beam. In the steady-state under a monochromatic pump, because of the finite radiative lifetime of photons, a sizable incoherent population of low frequency phonons is predicted to appear. Their mean occupation number differs from a Planck distribution and is independent on the photon lifetime. When the photon fluid is subjected to a sudden change of its parameters, additional phonon pairs are created in the fluid with remarkable two…
We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the interference properties of a single photon source based on a In(Ga)As quantum dot embedded in a quasi-planar GaAs-microcavity. Using resonant laser excitation with a pulse separation of 2 ns, we find near-perfect interference of the emitted photons, and a corresponding indistinguishability of $\mathcal{I} = (99.6\,^{+\,0.4}_{-\,1.4})\%$. For larger pulse separations, quasi-resonant excitation conditions, increasing pump power or with increasing temperature, the interference contrast is progressively and notably reduced. We present a s…

Solid-state emitters are excellent candidates for developing integrated sources of single photons. Yet, phonons degrade the photon indistinguishability both through pure dephasing of the zero-phonon line and through phonon-assisted emission. Here, we study theoretically and experimentally the indistinguishability of photons emitted by a semiconductor quantum dot in a microcavity as a function of temperature. We show that a large coupling to a high quality factor cavity can simultaneously reduce the effect of both phonon-induced sources of decoherence. It first limits the effect of pure dephasi…
Single photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots offer distinct advantages for quantum information, including a scalable solid-state platform, ultrabrightness, and interconnectivity with matter qubits. A key prerequisite for their use in optical quantum computing and solid-state networks is a high level of efficiency and indistinguishability. Pulsed resonance fluorescence (RF) has been anticipated as the optimum condition for the deterministic generation of high-quality photons with vanishing effects of dephasing. Here, we generate pulsed RF single photons on demand from a single, mic…
Quantum theory is the foundation of modern physics. Some of its basic principles, such as Born's rule, however, are based on postulates which require experimental testing. Any deviation from Born's rule would result in higher-order interference and can thus be tested in an experiment. Here, we report on such a test with a quantum light source based on a color center in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) coupled to a microcavity. Our room temperature photon source features a narrow linewidth, high efficiency, high purity, and on-demand single-photon generation. With the single-photon source we can i…
The characteristics of a single-photon emitter based on a semiconductor quantum dot, such as their indistinguishability and brightness, depend on the stability of the recombination channel, which can switch spontaneously between exciton and trion. We show that dominant recombination through neutral exciton states can be achieved by careful control of the doping profile near an epitaxial InAs/GaAs quantum dot placed in a columnar microcavity with distributed Bragg reflectors. The Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments carried out in the fabricated device demonstrate the degree of indistinguishability of 91…
Efficient interfaces between photons and quantum emitters form the basis for quantum networks and enable nonlinear optical devices operating at the single-photon level. We demonstrate an integrated platform for scalable quantum nanophotonics based on silicon-vacancy (SiV) color centers coupled to nanoscale diamond devices. By placing SiV centers inside diamond photonic crystal cavities, we realize a quantum-optical switch controlled by a single color center. We control the switch using SiV metastable orbital states and verify optical switching at the single-photon level by using photon correla…
