Considered is quantum tunnelling in anisotropic spin systems in a magnetic field perpendicular to the anisotropy axis. In the domain of small field the problem of calculating tunnelling splitting of energy levels is reduced to constructing the perturbatio n series with degeneracy, the order of degeneracy being proportional to a spin value. Partial summation of this series taking into account ''dangerous terms'' with small denominators is performed and the value of tunnelling splitting is calculated with allowance for the first correction with respect to a magnetic field.
In quantum tunnelling, what appears an infinitely fast barrier traversal can be explained in terms of an Aharonov-like weak measurement of the tunnelling time, in which the role of the pointer is played by the particle's own coordinate. A relativistic wavepacket is shown to be reshaped through a series of subluminal shifts which together produce an anomalous 'superluminal' result.
Quantum fractal superlattices are microelectronic devices consisting of a series of thin layers of two semiconductor materials deposited alternately on each other over a substrate following the rules of construction of a fractal set, here, a symmetrical polyadic Cantor fractal. The scattering properties of electrons in these superlattices may be modeled by using that of quantum particles in piecewise constant potential wells. The twist plots representing the reflection coefficient as function of the lacunarity parameter show the appearance of black curves with perfectly transparent tunnelling …
This work proposes a series of quantum experiments that can, at least in principle, allow for examining microscopic mechanisms associated with decoherence. These experiments can be interpreted as a quantum-mechanical version of non-equilibrium mixing between two volumes separated by a thin interface. One of the principal goals of such experiments is in identifying non-equilibrium conditions when time-symmetric laws give way to time-directional, irreversible processes, which are represented by decoherence at the quantum level. The rate of decoherence is suggested to be examined indirectly, with…
We study the simple Hamiltonian, $H=-K(S_{1z}^2 +S_{2z}^2)+ λ\vec S_1\cdot\vec S_2$, of two, large, coupled spins which are taken equal, each of total spin $s$ with $λ$ the exchange coupling constant. The exact ground state of this simple Hamiltonian is not known for an antiferromagnetic coupling corresponding to the $λ>0$. In the absence of the exchange interaction, the ground state is four fold degenerate, corresponding to the states where the individual spins are in their highest weight or lowest weight states, $|\hskip-1 mm\uparrow, \uparrow\rangle, |\hskip-1 mm\downarrow, \downarrow\rangl…
It has been argued by Dyson that the perturbation series in coupling constant in QED can not be convergent. We find that similiar albeit slightly different arguments lead to the divergence of the series of $1/N_f$ expansion in QED.
We show numerically that a finite isolated cluster of interacting spins 1/2 exhibits a surprising non-thermal statistics when subjected to a series of small non-adiabatic perturbations by external magnetic field. The resulting occupations of energy eigenstates are significantly higher than the thermal ones on both the low and the high ends of the energy spectra. This behavior semi-quantitatively agrees with the statistics predicted for the so-called "quantum micro-canonical" (QMC) ensemble, which includes all possible quantum superpositions with a given energy expectation value. Our findings a…
We apply Borel resummation method to the conventional perturbation series of ground state energy in a metastable potential, $V(x)=x^2/2-gx^4/4$. We observe numerically that the discontinuity of Borel transform reproduces the imaginary part of energy eigenvalue, i.e., total decay width due to the quantum tunneling. The agreement with the exact numerical value is remarkable in the whole tunneling regime $0<g\lsim0.7$.
We evaluate the Green's function of the D-dimensional relativistic Coulomb system via sum over perturbation series which is obtained by expanding the exponential containing the potential term $V({\bf x)}$ in the path integral into a power series. The energy spectra and wave functions are extracted from the resulting amplitude.
The difficulty that the probabilities infinitely increase with time as time is long enough in time-dependent perturbation theory for some quantum systems is resolved by means of simply transforming the perturbative series into natural exponential functions of the re-summed perturbative series. Three exactly solvable models are taken to check our new formulation, and excellent agreements with the exact solution are achieved.
The order dependent mapping method, its convergence has recently been proven for the energy eigenvalue of the anharmonic oscillator, is applied to re-sum the standard perturbation series for Stark effect of the hydrogen atom. We perform a numerical experiment up to the fiftieth order of the perturbation expansion. A simple mapping suggested by the analytic structure and the strong field behavior gives an excellent agreement with the exact value for an intermediate range of the electric field, $0.03\leq E\leq0.25$. The imaginary part of the energy (the decay width) as well as the real part of t…
I provide a straightforward proof that a simple harmonic oscillator perturbed by an (almost) arbitrary positive interaction has a perturbative expansion for any finite-time Euclidian transition amplitude which obeys the following result: the difference of the sum of the first N terms of the series and the exact result is bounded in absolute value by the next term in the series. The proof makes no assumptions about either the strength of the interactions or the convergence of the perturbation series. I then argue that the result generalizes immediately to a much broader class of quantum mechani…
A method for calculating the relativistic path integral solution via sum over perturbation series is given. As an application the exact path integral solution of the relativistic Aharonov-Bohm-Coulomb system is obtained by the method. Different from the earlier treatment based on the space-time transformation and infinite multiple-valued trasformation of Kustaanheimo-Stiefel in order to perform path integral, the method developed in this contribution involves only the explicit form of a simple Green's function and an explicit path integral is avoided.
A few modified textbook Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbative representations of bound states are reviewed. They were all inspired by an adaptive re-split of the Hamiltonian, using nonstandard bases and the flexibility of normalization of the wave functions.
An algorithm and a computer program in Fortran 95 are presented which enumerate the Hugenholtz diagram representation of the many-body perturbation series for the ground state energy with a two-body interaction. The output is in a form suitable for post-processing such as automatic code generation. The results of a particular application, generation of LaTeX code to draw the diagrams, is shown.
We compare two alternative expansions for finite attractive wells. One of them is known from long ago and is given in terms of powers of the strength parameter. The other one is based on the solution of the equations of the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in a basis set of functions of period $L$. The analysis of exactly solvable models shows that although the exact solution of the problem with periodic boundary conditions yields the correct result when $L\rightarrow \infty$ the coefficients of the series for this same problem blow up and fail to produce the correct asymptotic expansi…
We make an extensive rigorous study on convergent behaviour of Morse-Feshbach nonlinear perturbation series (MFNPS) to find out energy levels of the anharmonic oscillator (AHO) in both weak and strong coupling limit. We develop a new method of multi step optimal splitting in order to get convergency in MFNPS for ground state of AHO and found that two step optimal splitting is sufficient to provide convergency in MFNPS. Unlike the ground state the optimal splitting parameters for excited states is modified according to their dependency on state in order to achieve convergency in MFNPS.
Many properties of current \emph{ab initio} approaches to the quantum many-body problem, both perturbational or otherwise, are related to the singularity structure of Rayleigh--Schrödinger perturbation theory. A numerical procedure is presented that in principle computes the complete set of singularities, including the dominant singularity which limits the radius of convergence. The method approximates the singularities as eigenvalues of a certain generalized eigenvalue equation which is solved using iterative techniques. It relies on computation of the action of the perturbed Hamiltonian on a…
It is well known that quantum-mechanical perturbation theory often give rise to divergent series that require proper resummation. Here I discuss simple ways in which these divergences can be avoided in the first place. Using the elementary technique of relaxed fixed-point iteration, I obtain convergent expressions for various challenging ground states wavefunctions, including quartic, sextic and octic anharmonic oscillators, the hydrogenic Zeeman problem, and the Herbst-Simon Hamiltonian (with finite energy but vanishing Rayleigh-Schrödinger coefficients), all at arbitarily strong coupling. Th…
We present the first representation of the general term of the Rayleigh-Schrödinger series for quasidegenerate systems. Each term of the series is represented by a tree and there is a straightforward relation between the tree and the analytical expression of the corresponding term. The combinatorial and graphical techniques used in the proof of the series expansion allow us to derive various resummation formulas of the series. The relation with several combinatorial objects used for special cases (degenerate or non-degenerate systems) is established.
Duality is considered for the perturbation theory by deriving, given a series solution in a small parameter, its dual series with the development parameter being the inverse of the other. A dual symmetry in perturbation theory is identified. It is then shown that the dual to the Dyson series in quantum mechanics is given by a recent devised series having the adiabatic approximation as leading order. A simple application of this result is given by rederiving a theorem for strongly perturbed quantum systems.
The renormalization group method is applied for obtaining the asymptotic form of the wave function of the quantum anharmonic oscillator by resumming the perturbation series. It is shown that the resumed series is the cumulant of the naive perturbation series. Working out up to the sixth order and performing a further resummation proposed by Bender and Bettencourt, we find that the agreement with the WKB result becomes worse in the higher orders than the fourth at which the agreement is the best.
We consider the resummation of the perturbation series describing the energy displacement of a hydrogenic bound state in an electric field (known as the Stark effect or the LoSurdo-Stark effect), which constitutes a divergent formal power series in the electric field strength. The perturbation series exhibits a rich singularity structure in the Borel plane. Resummation methods are presented which appear to lead to consistent results even in problematic cases where isolated singularities or branch cuts are present on the positive and negative real axis in the Borel plane. Two resummation prescr…
This paper proposes a very simple perturbative technique to calculate the low-lying eigenvalues and eigenstates of a parity-symmetric quantum-mechanical potential. The technique is to solve the time-independent Schroedinger eigenvalue problem as a perturbation series in which the perturbation parameter is the energy itself. Unlike nearly all perturbation series for physical problems, for the ground state this perturbation expansion is convergent and, even though the ground-state energy is in general not small compared with 1, the perturbative results are numerically accurate. The perturbation …
We generalize a recently proposed small-energy expansion for one-dimensional quantum-mechanical models. The original approach was devised to treat symmetric potentials and here we show how to extend it to non-symmetric ones. Present approach is based on matching the logarithmic derivatives for the left and right solutions to the Schrödinger equation at the origin (or any other point chosen conveniently) . As in the original method, each logarithmic derivative can be expanded in a small-energy series by straightforward perturbation theory. We test the new approach on four simple models, one of …
