Coherent states provide an appealing method to reconstruct efficiently a pure state of a quantum mechanical spin s. A Stern-Gerlach apparatus is used to measure (4s+1) expectations of projection operators on appropriate coherent states in the unknown state. These measurements are compatible with a finite number of states which can be distinguished, in the generic case, by measuring one more probability. In addition, the present technique shows that the zeroes of a Husimi distribution do have an operational meaning: they can be identified directly by measurements with a Stern-Gerlach apparatus. This result comes down to saying that it is possible to resolve experimentally structures in quantum phase-space which are smaller than hbar.
We present an experiment of nonclassical interference between a pure heralded single-photon state and a weak coherent state. Our experiment is the first to demonstrate that spectrally pure single photons can have high interference visibility, 89.4 \pm 0.5%, with weak coherent photons. Our scheme lays the groundwork for future experiments requiring quantum interference between photons in nonclassical states and those in coherent states.
In this paper we investigate the entanglement of multi-qubit fermionic coherent states described by anticommutative Grassmann numbers. Choosing an appropriate weight function, we show that it is possible to construct some entangled pure states, consisting of {\bf{GHZ}}, {\bf{W}}, Bell and biseparable states, by tensor product of fermion coherent states. Moreover a comparison with maximal entangled bosonic coherent states is presented and it is shown that in some cases they have fermionic counterpart which are maximal entangled after integration with suitable weight functions.
The Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is experimentally demonstrated for three-qubit functions using pure coherent superpositions of Li$_{2}$ rovibrational eigenstates. The function's character, either constant or balanced, is evaluated by first imprinting the function, using a phase-shaped femtosecond pulse, on a coherent superposition of the molecular states, and then projecting the superposition onto an ionic final state, using a second femtosecond pulse at a specific time delay.
Quantum states transformation under free operations plays a central role in the resource theory of coherence. In this paper, we investigate the transformation from a mixed coherent state into a pure one by using both incoherent operations and stochastic incoherent operations. We show that contrary to the strictly incoherent operations and the stochastic strictly incoherent operations, both the incoherent operations and the stochastic incoherent operations can increase the dimension of the maximal pure coherent subspace of a state. This means that the incoherent operations are generally stronge…
We report, for the first time, the observation of sub-wavelength coherent image of a pure phase object with thermal light, which represents an accurate Fourier transform. We demonstrate that ghost-imaging scheme (GI) retrieves amplitude transmittance knowledge of objects rather than the transmitted intensities as the HBT-type imaging scheme does.
Features of biphoton polarization-frequency ququarts are considered. Their wave functions are defined as functions of both polarization and frequency variables of photons with the symmetry obligatory for two-boson states taken into account. In experiments, biphoton ququarts can display different features in dependence on whether experiments involve purely polarization or (alternatively) polarization-frequency measurements. If in experiments one uses only polarization measurements, the originally pure states of ququarts can be seen as mixed biphoton polarization states. Features of such states …
We report on the experimental generation of an entangled state with a spectrally pure heralded single-photon state and a weak coherent state. By choosing group-velocity matching in the nonlinear crystal, our system for producing entangled photons was 60 times brighter than that in the earlier experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 240401 (2003)], with no need of bandpass filters. This entanglement system is useful for quantum information protocols that require indistinguishable photons from independent sources.
We show how group symmetries can be used to reconstruct quantum states. In our scheme for SU(1,1) states, the input field passes through a non-degenerate parametric amplifier and one measures the probability of finding the output state with a certain number (usually zero) of photons in each mode. The density matrix in the Fock basis is retrieved from the measured data by least squares method after singular value decomposition of the design matrix. Several illustrative examples involving the reconstruction of a pair coherent state, a Perelomov coherent state, and a coherent superposition of pai…
We analyse the reconstruction of an unknown pure qubit state. We derive the optimal guess that can be inferred from any set of measurements on N identical copies of the system with the fidelity as a figure of merit. We study in detail the estimation process with individual von Neumann measurements and demonstrate that they are very competitive as compared to (complicated) collective measurements. We compute the expressions of the fidelity for large $N$ and show that individual measurement schemes can perform optimally in the asymptotic regime.
Quantum coherence, emerging from the 'superposition' of quantum states, is widely used in various information processing tasks. Recently, the resource theory of multilevel quantum coherence is attracting substantial attention. In this paper, we mainly study the deterministic transformations of resource pure states via free operations in the theoretical framework for multilevel coherence. We prove that any two multilevel coherent resource pure states can be interconverted with a nonzero probability via a completely positive and trace non-increasing $k$-coherence-preserving map. Meanwhile, we pr…
To reconstruct a mixed or pure quantum state of a spin s is possible through coherent states: its density matrix is fixed by the probabilities to measure the value s along 4s(s+1) appropriately chosen directions in space. Thus, after inverting the experimental data, the statistical operator is parametrized entirely by expectation values. On this basis, a symbolic calculus for quantum spins is developed, the `expectation-value representation.' It resembles the Moyal representation for SU(2) but two important differences exist. On the one hand, the symbols take values on a discrete set of points…
It is well known that random bipartite pure states are typically maximally entangled within an arbitrarily small error. Showing that the marginals of random bipartite pure states are typically extremely close to the maximally mixed state, is a way to prove the above. However, a more direct way to prove the above is to estimate the distance of random bipartite pure states from the set of maximally entangled states. Here, we find the average distance between a random bipartite pure state and the set of maximally entanglement states as quantified by three different quantifiers of the distance and…
A pure indirect control of quantum systems via quantum accessor is investigated. In this control scheme, we do not apply any external classical excitation fields on the controlled system and we control a quantum system via a quantum accessor and classical control fields control the accessor only. Complete controllability is investigated for arbitrary finite dimensional quantum systems and exemplified by 2 and 3 dimensional systems. The scheme exhibits some advantages; it uses less qubits in accessor and does not depend on the energy-level structure of the controlled system.
We use the probability of error as a measure of distinguishability between two pure and two mixed symmetric coherent states in the context of continuous variable quantum cryptography. We show that the two mixed symmetric coherent states (in which the various components have the same real part) never give an eavesdropper more information than two pure coherent states.
In this work we study the quantum dynamics emerging when quantum emitters exchange excitations with a two-dimensional bosonic bath with hexagonal symmetry. We show that a single quantum emitter spectrally tuned to the middle of the band relaxes following a logarithmic law in time due to the existence of a singular point with vanishing density of states, i.e., the Dirac point. Moreover, when several emitters are coupled to the bath at that frequency, long-range coherent interactions between them appear which decay inversely proportional to their distance without exponential attenuation. We anal…
We present the reconstruction of the Wigner function of a classical phase-sensitive state, a pulsed coherent state, by measurements of the distributions of detected-photons of the state displaced by a coherent probe field. By using a hybrid photodetector operated above its photon-resolving regime, we obtained both the statistics at different values of the probe field and the values of the probe phase required to reconstruct the Wigner function.
A laser, be it an optical laser or an atom laser, is an open quantum system that produces a coherent beam of bosons. Far above threshold, the stationary state $ρ_{ss}$ of the laser mode is a mixture of coherent field states with random phase, or, equivalently, a Poissonian mixture of number states. This paper answers the question: can descriptions such as these, of $ρ_{ss}$ as a stationary ensemble of pure states, be physically realized? An ensemble of pure states for a particular system can be physically realized if, without changing the dynamics of the system, an experimenter can (in princip…
The coherence resource theory needs to study the operational value and efficiency which can be broadly formulated as the question: when can one coherent state be converted into another under incoherent operations. We answer this question completely for one-mode continuous-variable systems by characterizing conversion of coherent Gaussian states under incoherent Gaussian operations in terms of their first and second moments. The no-go theorem of purification of coherent Gaussian states is also built. The structure of incoherent Gaussian operations of two-mode continuous-variable systems is disc…
A time-resolved spectroscopic protocol exploiting terahertz-assisted photoionization is proposed to reconstruct transient density matrix. Population and coherence elements are effectively mapped onto spectrally separated peaks in photoionization spectra. The beatings of coherence dynamics can be temporally resolved beyond the pulse duration, and the relative phase between involved states is directly readable from the oscillatory spectral distribution. As demonstrated by a photo-excited multilevel open quantum system, the method shows potential applications for sub-femtosecond time-resolved mea…
By using the ghost imaging technique, we experimentally demonstrate the reconstruction of the diffraction pattern of a {\em pure phase} object by using the classical correlation of incoherent thermal light split on a beam splitter. The results once again underline that entanglement is not a necessary feature of ghost imaging. The light we use is spatially highly incoherent with respect to the object ($\approx 2 μ$m speckle size) and is produced by a pseudo-thermal source relying on the principle of near-field scattering. We show that in these conditions no information on the phase object can b…
A simplified expression of concurrence for two-qubit mixed state having no more than three non-vanishing eigenvalues is obtained. Basing on SU(2) coherent states, the amount of entanglement of two-qubit pure states is studied and conditions for entanglement are calculated by formulating the measure in terms of some new parameters (amplitudes of coherent states). This formalism is generalized to the case of two-qubit mixed states using the simplified expression of concurrence.
The resonant interaction of two nonidentical two-level atoms with one mode of the electromagnetic field has been considered. The pure-state evolution of the atomic states for field initially in the coherent state and atoms in the ground state has been investigated. It has been shown that for intermediate values of the relative differences of two coupling constants the atoms as well as the field are returned most closely to a pure state at the revival time. The possibility of the maximally entangled states at the beginning of the collapse time has been discussed.
We provide (partial) reconstruction formulas and discrete Fourier transforms for wave functions in standard Fock-Bargmann (holomorphic) phase-number representation from a finite number $N$ of phase samples $\{θ_k=2πk/N\}_{k=0}^{N-1}$ for a given mean number $p$ of particles. The resulting Coherent State (CS) subsystem ${\cal S}=\{|z_k=p^{1/2}e^{iθ_k}>\}$ is complete (a frame) for truncated Hilbert spaces (finite number of particles) and reconstruction formulas are exact. For an unbounded number of particles, ${\cal S}$ is "almost complete" (a \textit{pseudo-frame}) and partial reconstruction f…
Spin chains have been proposed as quantum wires in many quantum information processing architectures. Coherent transmission of quantum information over short distances is enabled by their internal dynamics, which drives the transport of single-spin excitations in perfectly polarized chains. Given the practical challenge of preparing the chain in a pure state, we propose to use a chain that is initially in the maximally mixed state. We compare the transport properties of pure and mixed-state chains, finding similarities that enable the experimental study of pure-state transfer by its simulation…
We introduce a simple measure of "classicality" of pure and mixed quantum states as a maximum value of the Hilbert-Schmidt "scalar products" between the renormalized statistical operators of the state concerned and all displaced thermal states. Choosing Fock states as the reference set, we introduce the measure of "anticlassicality". Both measures are illustrated for the Fock, coherent phase, and generic mixed Gaussian states. Gaussian states are shown to be the closest to thermal states possessing the same degree of quantum purity. On the contrary, Fock states appear to be more close to mixed…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to produce pure and macroscopical entangled coherent state. When a three-level ''V'' configuration atom interacts with a doubly reasonant cavity, under the strong classical driven condition, entangled coherent state can be generated from vacuum fields. An analytical solution for this system under the presence of cavity losses is also given.
As discussed in Wiseman and Vaccaro [quant-ph/9906125], the stationary state of an optical or atom laser far above threshold is a mixture of coherent field states with random phase, or, equivalently, a Poissonian mixture of number states. We are interested in which, if either, of these descriptions of $ρ_{ss}$, is more natural. In the preceding paper we concentrated upon whether descriptions such as these are physically realizable (PR). In this paper we investigate another relevant aspect of these ensembles, their robustness. A robust ensemble is one for which the pure states that comprise it …
We introduce a framework for the preparation, coherent manipulation and characterization of free-electron quantum states, experimentally demonstrating attosecond pulse trains for electron microscopy. Specifically, we employ phase-locked single-color and two-color optical fields to coherently control the electron wave function along the beam direction. We establish a new variant of quantum state tomography - "SQUIRRELS" - to reconstruct the density matrices of free-electron ensembles and their attosecond temporal structure. The ability to tailor and quantitatively map electron quantum states wi…
Based on a pure solid-state device consisting of two superconducting LC circuits coupled to a superconducting flux qubit, we propose in this paper that the maximally entangled coherent states of the two LC modes can be generated for arbitrary coherent states through flux qubit controls.
A long standing problem in quantum mechanics is the minimum number of observables required for the characterisation of unknown pure quantum states. The solution to this problem is specially important for the developing field of high-dimensional quantum information processing. In this work we demonstrate that any pure d-dimensional state is unambiguously reconstructed by measuring 5 observables, that is, via projective measurements onto the states of 5 orthonormal bases. Thus, in our method the total number of different measurement outcomes (5d) scales linearly with d. The state reconstruction …
We show that using coherent, spatially resolved spectroscopy, complex hybrid wave functions can be disentangled into the individual wave functions of the individual emitters. This way, detailed information on the coupling of the individual emitters, not available in far-field spectroscopy can be obtained. The proposed quantum state tomography relies on the ability to selectively excite each emitter individually by spatially localized pulses. Simulations of coupled semiconductor Ga/InAs quantum dots, using light fields available in current nanoplasmonics, show that even undesired resonances can…
The quantum analogue of ptychography, a powerful coherent diffractive imaging technique, is a simple method for reconstructing $d$-dimensional pure states. It relies on measuring partially overlapping parts of the input state in a single orthonormal basis and feeding the outcomes to an iterative phase-retrieval algorithm for postprocessing. We provide a proof of concept demonstration of this method by determining pure states given by superpositions of $d$ transverse spatial modes of an optical field. A set of $n$ rank-$r$ projectors, diagonal in the spatial mode basis, is used to generate $n$ …
We consider a quantum system consisting of N parts, each of which is a "quKit" described by a K dimensional Hilbert space. We prove that in the symmetric subspace, S, a pure state is not globally entangled, if and only if it is a coherent state. It is also shown that in the orthogonal complement all states are globally entangled.
We consider the distinguishability of Gaussian states from the view point of continuous-variable quantum cryptography using post-selection. Specifically, we use the probability of error to distinguish between two pure coherent (squeezed) states and two particular mixed symmetric coherent (squeezed) states where each mixed state is an incoherent mixture of two pure coherent (squeezed) states with equal and opposite displacements in the conjugate quadrature. We show that the two mixed symmetric Gaussian states (where the various components have the same real part) never give an eavesdropper more…
Time evolution of a harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a heat bath is compared for three classes of initial states for the bath modes - grand canonical ensemble, number states and coherent states. It is shown that for a wide class of number states the behavior of the oscillator is similar to the case of the equilibrium bath. If the bath modes are initially in coherent states, then the variances of the oscillator coordinate and momentum, as well as its entanglement to the bath, asymptotically approach the same values as for the oscillator at zero temperature and the average coordinate and …
The article introduces efficient quantum state tomography schemes for qutrits and entangled qubits subject to pure decoherence. We implement the dynamic state reconstruction method for open systems sent through phase-damping channels which was proposed in: Open Syst. Inf. Dyn. 23, 1650019 (2016). In the current article we prove that two distinct observables measured at four different time instants suffice to reconstruct the initial density matrix of a qutrit with evolution given by a phase-damping channel. Furthermore, we generalize the approach in order to determine the optimal criteria for q…
Purification of mixed states in Quantum Mechanics, by which we mean the transformation into pure states, has been viewed as an {\it Operation} in the sense of Kraus et al and explicit {\it Kraus Operators} \cite{kra1,kra2,kra3} have been constructed for two seperate purification protocols. The first one, initially due to Schrodinger \cite{sch} and subsequently elaborated by Sudarshan et al \cite{sudar}, is based on the {\it preservation of probabilities}. We have constructed a second protocol here based on {\it optimization of fidelities}. Both purification protocols have been implemented on a…
The application of a matrix-based reconstruction protocol for obtaining Molecular Frame (MF) photoelectron angular distributions (MFPADs) from laboratory frame (LF) measurements (LFPADs) is explored. Similarly to other recent works on the topic of MF reconstruction, this protocol makes use of time-resolved LF measurements, in which a rotational wavepacket is prepared and probed via photoionization, followed by a numerical reconstruction routine; however, in contrast to other methodologies, the protocol developed herein does not require determination of photoionization matrix elements, and cons…
In the present article, based on the formalism introduced in [Loubenets, J. Math. Phys. 53, 022201 (2012)], we derive for a pure bipartite quantum state a new upper bound on its maximal violation of general Bell inequalities. This new bound indicates that, for an infinite dimensional pure bipartite state with a finite sum of its Schmidt coefficients, violation of any general Bell inequality is bounded from above by the value independent on a number of settings and a type of outcomes, continuous or discrete, specific to this Bell inequality. As an example, we apply our new general results to sp…
We discuss a scheme for reconstructing experimentally the diagonal elements of the density matrix of quantum optical states. Applications to PDC heralded photons, multi-thermal and attenuated coherent states are illustrated and discussed in some details.
The state of a microscopic system encodes its complete quantum description, from which the probabilities of all measurement outcomes are inferred. Being a statistical concept, the state cannot be obtained from a single system realization. It can be reconstructed from an ensemble of copies, by performing measurements on different realizations. Reconstructing the state of a set of trapped particles shielded from their environment is an important step for the investigation of the quantum to classical boundary. While trapped atom state reconstructions have been achieved, it is challenging to perfo…
Coherent errors are a dominant noise process in many quantum computing architectures. Unlike stochastic errors, these errors can combine constructively and grow into highly detrimental overrotations. To combat this, we introduce a simple technique for suppressing systematic coherent errors in low-density parity-check (LDPC) stabilizer codes, which we call stabilizer slicing. The essential idea is to slice low-weight stabilizers into two equally-weighted Pauli operators and then apply them by rotating in opposite directions, causing their overrotations to interfere destructively on the logical …
Coherent feedback is a non-measurement based, hence a back-action free, method of control for quantum systems. A typical application of this control scheme is squeezing enhancement, a purely non-classical effect in quantum optics. In this paper we report its first experimental demonstration that well agrees with the theory taking into account time delays and losses in the coherent feedback loop. The results clarify both the benefit and the limitation of coherent feedback control in a practical situation.
The set of pure spin states with vanishing spin expectation value can be regarded as the set of the less coherent pure spin states. This set can be divided into a finite number of nested subsets on the basis of higher order moments of the spin operators. This subdivision relies on the notion of anticoherent spin state to order $t$: A spin state is said to be anticoherent to order $t$ if the moment of order $k$ of the spin components along any directions are equal for $k= 1, 2,\ldots, t$. Most spin states are neither coherent nor anticoherent, but can be arbitrary close to one or the other. In …
Coherence distillation is a basic information-theoretic task in the resource theory of coherence. In this paper, we present the necessary and sufficient conditions under which a mixed state can be distilled into a pure coherent state via stochastic incoherent operations (sIOs). With the help of this result, we further show the following: (i) Any $2$-dimensional coherent state is distillable via sIOs if and only if it is a pure coherent state; (ii) a state $ρ$ is n-distillable via sIOs if and only if it is 1-distillable; and (iii) the set of distillable states via stochastic maximally incoheren…

In this paper we propose a systematic method to solve the inverse dynamical problem for a quantum system governed by the von Neumann equation: to find a class of Hamiltonians reproducing a prescribed time evolution of a pure or mixed state of the system. Our approach exploits the equivalence between an action of the group of evolution operators over the state space and an adjoint action of the unitary group over Hermitian matrices. The method is illustrated by two examples involving a pure and a mixed state.
Dissipative preparation of a pure steady state usually involves a commutative action of a coherent and a dissipative dynamics on the target state. Namely, the target pure state is an eigenstate of both the coherent and dissipative parts of the dynamics. We show that working in the Zeno regime, i.e. for infinitely large dissipative coupling, one can generate a pure state by a non commutative action, in the above sense, of the coherent and dissipative dynamics. A corresponding Zeno regime pureness criterion is derived. We illustrate the approach, looking at both its theoretical and applicative a…
We consider a huge quantum system that is subject to the charge superselection rule, which requires that any pure state must be an eigenstate of the total charge. We regard some parts of the system as "subsystems," and the rest as an environment E. We assume that one does not measure anything of E, i.e., one is only interested in observables of the subsystems. We show that there exist states with the following properties: (i) Its reduced density operator is completely equivalent to a vector state of the subsystems for any gauge-invariant observable of the subsystems. (ii) The vector state is a…
It is well known that the majorization condition is the necessary and sufficient condition for the deterministic transformations of both pure bipartite entangled states by local operations and coherent states under incoherent operations. In this paper, we present two explicit protocols for these transformations. We first present a permutation-based protocol which provides a method for the single-step transformation of $d$-dimensional coherent states. We also obtain generalized solutions of this protocol for some special cases of $d$-level systems. Then, we present an alternative protocol where…

Laser cooling and trapping of atoms and atomic ions has led to numerous advances including the observation of exotic phases of matter, development of exquisite sensors and state-of-the-art atomic clocks. The same level of control in molecules could also lead to profound developments such as controlled chemical reactions and sensitive probes of fundamental theories, but the vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom in molecules pose a formidable challenge for controlling their quantum mechanical states. Here, we use quantum-logic spectroscopy (QLS) for preparation and nondestructive detecti…
