By placing changeable nanofabricated structures (wires, dots, etc.) on an atom mirror one can design guiding and trapping potentials for atoms. These potentials are similar to the electrostatic potentials which trap and guide electrons in semiconductor quantum devices like quantum wires and quantum dots. This technique will allow the fabrication of nanoscale atom optical devices.
We demonstrate guiding of cold neutral atoms along a current carrying wire. Atoms either move in Kepler-like orbits around the wire or are guided in a potential tube on the side of the wire which is created by applying an additional homogeneous bias field. These atom guides are very versatile and promising for applications in atom optics.

In this paper we investigate the coherence properties of a quantum dot under two-photon resonant excitation in combination with an additional photo-neutralization laser. The photo-neutralization increases the efficiency of the excitation process and thus, the brightness of the source, by a factor of approximately 1.5 for biexciton-exciton pairs. This enhancement does not degrade the relevant coherences in the system; neither the single photon coherence time, nor the coherence of the excitation process.
We present a comprehensive study of the optical transitions and selection rules of variably charged single self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots. We apply high resolution polarization sensitive photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy to the same quantum dot for three different charge states: neutral and negatively or positively charged by one additional electron or hole. From the detailed analysis of the excitation spectra, a full understanding of the single-carrier energy levels and the interactions between carriers in these levels is extracted for the first time.
We discuss a model of a leaky quantum wire and a family of quantum dots described by Laplacian in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with an attractive singular perturbation supported by a line and a finite number of points. The discrete spectrum is shown to be nonempty, and furthermore, the resonance problem can be explicitly solved in this setting; by Birman-Schwinger method it is reformulated into a Friedrichs-type model.
We investigate the scattering of neutral polarizable atoms from an electrically charged wire placed in a homogeneous magnetic field. The atoms carry an induced electric dipole. The reflecting wire is discussed. We calculate the scattering amplitude and cross section the practically more important case that atoms are totally absorbed at the surface of the wire. If the magnetic field is present, there is a dominating Aharonov-Bohm peak in the forward direction followed by decreasing oscillations for larger angles. An experimental realization of this modulated Aharonov-Bohm scattering should be p…
We solve the problem of a neutral atom interacting with a charged wire, giving rise to an attractive 1/r^2 potential in two dimensions. We show how a suitable average over all possible self-adjoint extensions of the radial Schroedinger Hamiltonian eventually leads to the classical formula for absorption of the atom, a formula shown to be in agreement with a recent experiment.
We consider single-channel transmission through a double quantum dot system consisting of two single dots that are connected by a wire and coupled each to one lead. The system is described in the framework of the S-matrix theory by using the effective Hamiltonian of the open quantum system. It consists of the Hamiltonian of the closed system (without attached leads) and a term that accounts for the coupling of the states via the continuum of propagating modes in the leads. This model allows to study the physical meaning of branch points in the complex plane. They are points of coalesced eigenv…
We propose a trap for cold neutral atoms using a fictitious magnetic field induced by a nanofiber-guided light field. In close analogy to magnetic side-guide wire traps realized with current-carrying wires, a trapping potential can be formed when applying a homogeneous magnetic bias field perpendicular to the fiber axis. We discuss this scheme in detail for laser-cooled cesium atoms and find trap depths and trap frequencies comparable to the two-color nanofiber-based trapping scheme but with one order of magnitude lower powers of the trapping laser field. Moreover, the proposed scheme allows o…
The Aharonov-Bohm scattering of charged particles by the magnetic field of an infinitely long and infinitely thin solenoid (magnetic string) in an absorbing medium is studied. We discuss the partial-wave approach to this problem and show that standard partial-wave method can be adjusted to this case. The effect of absorption leads to oscillations of the AB cross section. Based on this we investigate the scattering of neutral atoms with induced electric dipole moments by a charge wire of finite radius which is placed in an uniform magnetic field. The physical realistic and practically important…
Here we propose a possible way to produce superconductors with high critical temperature Tc by confinement of a Fermi liquid in a superlattice of quantum stripes (wells, wires or dots). The enhancement of Tc is obtained by tuning the size L of the stripes (wells, wires or dots), and the wavelength of electrons at the Fermi level λF at the resonance condition L λF. The 3D superconducting phase is stabilized by the condition that the separation W between the stripes (wells, wires or dots) should be of the order of the coherence length ξ0. This quantum state is realized in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu2O8+y superc…
Individual self-assembled Quantum Dots and Quantum Posts are studied under the influence of a surface acoustic wave. In optical experiments we observe an acoustically induced switching of the occupancy of the nanostructures along with an overall increase of the emission intensity. For Quantum Posts, switching occurs continuously from predominantely charged excitons (dissimilar number of electrons and holes) to neutral excitons (same number of electrons and holes) and is independent on whether the surface acoustic wave amplitude is increased or decreased. For quantum dots, switching is non-mono…
We investigate the charging dynamics in epitaxially grown InAs quantum dots under resonant excitation with and without additional low-power above-band excitation. Time-resolved resonance fluorescence from a charged exciton (trion) transition is recorded as the above-band excitation is modulated on and off. The fluorescence intensity varies as the QD changes from charged to neutral and back due to the influence of the above-band excitation. We fit the transients of the time-resolved resonance fluorescence with models that represent the charging and neutralization processes. The time dependence …
We report on recent progress in the acousto-electrical control of self-assembled quantum dot and quantum post using radio frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs). We show that the occupancy state of these optically active nanostructures can be controlled via the SAW-induced dissociation of photogenerated excitons and the resulting sequential bipolar carrier injection which strongly favors the formation of neutral excitons for quantum posts in contrast to conventional quantum dots. We demonstrate high fidelity preparation of the neutral biexciton which makes this approach suitable for determini…
We theoretically evaluate changes in the magnetic potential arising from the magnetic field near superconducting thin films. An example of an atom chip based on a three-wire configuration has been simulated in the superconducting and the normal conducting state. Inhomogeneous current densities within the superconducting wires were calculated using an energy-minimization routine based on the London theory. The Meissner effect causes changes to both trap position and oscillation frequencies at short distances from the superconducting surface. Superconducting wires produce much shallower micro tr…
Liquid He-4 is free from magnetic defects, making it an ideal substrate for electrons with long-lived spin states. Such states can serve as qubit states. Here we consider the spin states of electrons electrostatically localized in quantum dots on a helium surface. Efficient gate operations in this system require spin-orbit coupling. It can be created by a nonuniform magnetic field from a current-carrying wire, can be turned on and off, and allows one to obtain large electro-dipole moment and comparatively fast coupling of spins in neighboring dots. Of central importance is to understand the sp…
We present a set of concrete and realistic ideas for the implementation of a small-scale quantum computer using electron spins in lateral GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots. Initialization is based on leads in the quantum Hall regime with tunable spin-polarization. Read-out hinges on spin-to-charge conversion via spin-selective tunneling to or from the leads, followed by measurement of the number of electron charges on the dot via a charge detector. Single-qubit manipulation relies on a microfabricated wire located close to the quantum dot, and two-qubit interactions are controlled via the tunnel barrie…
We study the band structure of semiconductor nanowires with quantum dots embedded in them. The band structure is calculated using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. We consider quantum dots of two different types, one type is defined by electrostatic potentials applied to the nanowire, while the other one is defined by adding materials with band offsets with respect to the band parameters of the nanowire. We are particularly interested in the appearance of discrete energy levels in the gap between the conduction band and the valence band of the nanostructure, and in the dependence of the en…
We present a detailed investigation of different excitonic states weakly confined in single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots obtained by the Al droplet-etching method. For our analysis we make use of temperature-, polarization- and magnetic field-dependent $μ$-photoluminescence measurements, which allow us to identify different excited states of the quantum dot system. Besides that, we present a comprehensive analysis of g-factors and diamagnetic coefficients of charged and neutral excitonic states in Voigt and Faraday configuration. Supported by theoretical calculations by the Configuration interacti…
We discuss the formation of crystalline electron clusters in semiconductor quantum dots and of crystalline patterns of neutral bosons in harmonic traps. In a first example, we use calculations for two electrons in an elliptic quantum dot to show that the electrons can localize and form a molecular dimer. The calculated singlet-triplet splitting (J) as a function of the magnetic field (B) agrees with cotunneling measurements, with its behavior reflecting the effective dissociation of the dimer for large B. Knowledge of the dot shape and of J(B) allows determination of the degree of entanglement…
We show that electron recombination using positively charged excitons in single quantum dots provides an efficient method to transfer entanglement from electron spins onto photon polarizations. We propose a scheme for the production of entangled four-photon states of GHZ type. From the GHZ state, two fully entangled photons can be obtained by a measurement of two photons in the linear polarization basis, even for quantum dots with observable fine structure splitting for neutral excitons and significant exciton spin decoherence. Because of the interplay of quantum mechanical selection rules and…
A scheme is proposed to teleport charge qubits via superradiance. Reservoir-induced entanglement is generated between two semiconductor dots in a microcavity where a quantum state encoded in a third quantum dot is then tuned into collective decay with one of the entangled dots. Teleportation is achieved automatically in our scheme which we also extend to quantum wires.
For an electrically driven electron confined in a nanowire quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we find a SOC-magnetism phase-locked condition under which we derive a complete set of Schrödinger kitten states which contains some novel degenerate ground states with oscillating wave packets or stationary double packets in undriven case. We identify such wave packets as Majorana-like quasiparticles and demonstrate that they obey non-Abelian statistics and behave similarly to neutral particles. The braiding operations based on the interchanges of the degenerate non-Abelian quasiparticles ar…
A GaAs/AlGaAs based two-qubit quantum device that allows the controlled generation and straightforward detection of entanglement by measuring a stationary current-voltage characteristic is proposed. We have developed a two-particle Green's function method of open systems and calculate the properties of three-dimensional interacting entangled systems non-perturbatively. We present concrete device designs and detailed, charge self-consistent predictions. One of the qubits is an all-electric Mach-Zehnder interferometer that consists of two electrostatically defined quantum wires with coupling win…
We conduct a combined experimental and theoretical study of the quantum-confined Stark effect in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots obtained with the local droplet etching method. In the experiment, we probe the permanent electric dipole and polarizability of neutral and positively charged excitons weakly confined in GaAs quantum dots by measuring their light emission under the influence of a variable electric field applied along the growth direction. Calculations based on the configuration-interaction method show excellent quantitative agreement with the experiment and allow us to elucidate the role of…
