Bose condensation of interacting bosons in a two-dimensional random potential is studied. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is solved to determine the spatially-varying order parameter and the localization length as a function of the disorder, the interaction strength, and the condensate density. A finite temperature of condensation is obtained thereby. The results are applied to determination of the superradiant decay of excitons in a GaAs quantum well.
We consider the generalized pure state density matrix which depends on different time moments. The evolution equation for this density matrix is obtained in case where the density matrix corresponds to the solutions of Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
The modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation was derived and solved to obtain the 1D solution in the zero-energy limit. This stationary solution could account for the dominated contributions due to the kinetic effect as well as the chemical potential in inhomogeneous Bose gases.
We have studied the ground state of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (nonlinear Schrodinger equation) for a Morse potential via a variational approach. It is seen that the ground state ceases to be bound when the coupling constant of the nonlinear term reaches a critical value. The disappearence of the ground state resembles a saddle node bifurcation.
We solve the unstructured search problem in constant time by computing with a physically motivated nonlinearity of the Gross-Pitaevskii type. This speedup comes, however, at the novel expense of increasing the time-measurement precision. Jointly optimizing these resource requirements results in an overall scaling of $N^{1/4}$. This is a significant, but not unreasonable, improvement over the $N^{1/2}$ scaling of Grover's algorithm. Since the Gross-Pitaevskii equation approximates the multi-particle (linear) Schrödinger equation, for which Grover's algorithm is optimal, our result leads to a qu…
In the first part of this contribution we prove the global existence and uniqueness of a trajectory that globally converges to the minimizer of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional for a large class of external potentials. Using the method of Sobolev gradients we can provide an explicit construction of this minimizing sequence. In the second part we numerically apply these results to a specific realization of the external potential and illustrate the main benefits of the method of Sobolev gradients, which are high numerical stability and rapid convergence towards the minimizer.
A prescription is given to obtain some exact results for certain external potentials $V\left({\vec r}\right)$ of the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii and Schrödinger equations. The study motivation is the ability to program $V\left({\vec r}\right)$ experimentally in Bose-Einstein condensates. Rather than derive wavefunctions that are solutions for a given $V\left({\vec r}\right)$, we ask which $V\left({\vec r}\right)$ will have a given pdf (probability density function) $P\left({\vec r}\right)$. Several examples in 1D and 2D are presented for well-known pdfs and for the hydrogen atom in momen…
In this study, after we have briefly introduced the standard Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we have suggested fractional Gross-Pitaevskii equations to investigate the time-dependent ground state dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensation of weakly interacting bosonic particle system which can includes non-Markovian processes or non-Gaussian distributions and long-range interactions. Only we focused the time-fractional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and have obtained solutions of the standard Gross-Pitaevskii and time-fractional Gross-Pitaevskii equations for attractive and repulsive interactions in the…
It has been proven theoretically for bosons with two-body repulsive interaction potentials in the dilute limit that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation provides the exact energy and density per particle as does the basic many-particle Schroedinger equation [Lieb and Seiringer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 170409 (2002)]. Here, we investigate the overlap of the Gross-Pitaevskii and exact ground state wavefunctions. It is found that this overlap is always smaller than unity and may even vanish in spite of the fact that both wavefunctions provide the same energy and density per particle. Consequences are discu…
We analyze the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate undergoing a continuous dispersive imaging by using a Lindblad operator formalism. Continuous strong measurements drive the condensate out of the coherent state description assumed within the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field approach. Continuous weak measurements allow instead to replace, for timescales short enough, the exact problem with its mean-field approximation through a stochastic analogue of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The latter is used to show the unwinding of a dark soliton undergoing a continuous imaging.
Effective spin-orbit coupling can be created in cold atom systems using atom-light interaction. We study the BECs in an optical lattice using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling. Bloch states for the linear equation are numerically obtained, and compared with stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlinear terms. Various vortex lattice states are found when the spin-orbit coupling is strong.
We show that the dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) that describes the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) density of a system of weakly repulsive bosons, also describes that of a system of strongly repulsive hard core bosons at half filling. As a consequence of this, the GPE soliton gets related to the magnetic soliton in an easy-plane ferromagnet, where it describes the square of the in-plane magnetization of the system. These relationships are shown to be useful in understanding various characteristics of solitons in these distinct many-body systems.
Quantum phenomena appear in a macroscopic scale in Bose-Einstein condensates. The Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describes the dynamics of the weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. The GP equation has a form of the Schroedinger equation with self-interaction. The coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to describe some mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates. In this paper, we will show some numerical results of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations without self-interaction, which has a form of nonlinearly-coupled Schroedinger equations. We demonstrate that the macroscopic oscillation a…
We perform a systematic study of the accuracy of split-step Fourier transform methods for the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation using symbolic calculation. Provided the most recent approximation for the wave function is always used in the nonlinear atom-atom interaction potential energy, every split-step algorithm we have tried has the same-order time stepping error for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Schroedinger equation.
In this paper, we prove the blowup alternative for Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchies on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and give the associated lower bounds on the blowup rate. In particular, we prove that any solution of density operators to the focusing Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy blow up in finite time for $n \ge 3$ if the energy per some $k$ particles in the initial condition is negative. All of these results hold without the assumption of factorized conditions for initial values as well as the admissible ones. Our analysis is based on use of a quasi-Banach space of sequences of marginal density matrices.
The Gross-Pitaevskii approximation is a long-wavelength theory widely used to describe a variety of properties of dilute Bose condensates, in particular trapped alkali gases. We point out that for short-ranged repulsive interactions this theory fails in dimensions d less than or equal to 2, and we propose the appropriate low-dimensional modifications. For d=1 we analyze density profiles in confining potentials, superfluid properties, solitons, and self-similar solutions.
In this paper we present analytical breather solutions of the three-dimensional nonlinear generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We use an Ansatz to reduce the three-dimensional equation with space- and time-dependent coefficients into an one-dimensional equation with constant coefficients. The key point is to show that both the space- and time-dependent coefficients of the nonlinear equation can contribute to modulate the breather excitations. We briefly discuss the experimental feasibility of the results in Bose-Einstein condensates.
We present a numerical scheme for solving the time-independent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions describing the Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped interacting neutral atoms at zero temperature. The trap potential is taken to be of the harmonic-oscillator type and the interaction both attractive and repulsive. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is numerically integrated consistent with the correct boundary conditions at the origin and in the asymptotic region. Rapid convergence is obtained in all cases studied. In the attractive case there is a limit to the maximum number of ato…
The objective of this work is the introduction and investigation of favourable time integration methods for the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with rotation term. Employing a reformulation in rotating Lagrangian coordinates, the equation takes the form of a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation involving a space-time-dependent potential. A natural approach that combines commutator-free quasi-Magnus exponential integrators with operator splitting methods and Fourier spectral space discretisations is proposed. Furthermore, the special structure of the Hamilton operator permits the design of specifically …
We numerically investigate the quench expansion dynamics of an initially confined state in a two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii lattice in the presence of external disorder. The expansion dynamics is conveniently described in the control parameter space of the energy and norm densities. The expansion can slow down substantially if the expected final state is a non-ergodic non-Gibbs one, regardless of the disorder strength. Likewise stronger disorder delays expansion. We compare our results with recent studies for quantum many body quench experiments.
We introduce a non-commutative generalization of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for one-dimensional quantum gasses and quantum liquids. This generalization is obtained by applying the time-dependent variational principle to the variational manifold of continuous matrix product states. This allows for a full quantum description of many body system ---including entanglement and correlations--- and thus extends significantly beyond the usual mean-field description of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is known to fail for (quasi) one-dimensional systems. By linearizing around a stationary soluti…
