In this paper, we show that two-dimensional billiards with point interactions inside exhibit a chaotic nature in the microscopic world, although their classical counterpart is non-chaotic. After deriving the transition matrix of the system by using the self-adjoint extension theory of functional analysis, we deduce the general condition for the appearance of chaos. The prediction is confirmed by numerically examining the statistical properties of energy spectrum of rectangular billiards with multiple point interactions inside. The dependence of the level statistics on the strength as well as the number of the scatterers is displayed.

Long periodic orbits constitute a serious drawback in Gutzwiller's theory of chaotic systems, and then it would be desirable that other classical invariants, not suffering from the same problem, could be used in the quantization of such systems. In this respect, we demonstrate how a suitable dynamical analysis of chaotic quantum spectra unveils the fundamental role played by classical invariant areas related to the stable and unstable manifolds of short periodic orbits.
This letter reports the findings of the late time behavior of the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) via a quantum kicked rotor model with $\cal{PT}$-symmetric driving potential. An analytical expression of the OTOCs' quadratic growth with time is yielded as $C(t)=G(K)t^2$. Interestingly, the growth rate $G$ features a quantized response to the increase of the kick strength $K$, which indicates the chaos-assisted quantization in the OTOCs' dynamics. The physics behind this is the quantized absorption of energy from the non-Hermitian driving potential. This discovery and the ensuing establ…
How to quantize gravity is a major outstanding open question in quantum physics. While many approaches assume Einstein's theory is an effective low-energy theory, another possibility is that standard methods of quantization are the problem. In this paper, I analyze a quantization mechanism based on chaotic dynamics of 5D general relativity (with imaginary time) with BKL dynamics in the mixmaster universe as an example. I propose that the randomness of quantum mechanics as well as its other properties such as nonlocality derive from chaotic flow of 4D spacetime through a 5th dimension, with the…
We present numerical evidence that in a system of interacting bosons there exists a correspondence between the spectral properties of the exact quantum Hamiltonian and the dynamical chaos of the associated mean field evolution. This correspondence, analogous to the usual quantum-classical correspondence, is related to the formal parallel between the second quantization of the mean field, which generates the exact dynamics of the quantum $N$-body system, and the first quantization of classical canonical coordinates. The limit of infinite density and the thermodynamic limit are then briefly disc…
We use the semiclassical quantization scheme of Bogomolny to calculate eigenvalues of the Lima\c con quantum billiard corresponding to a conformal map of the circle billiard. We use the entire billiard boundary as the chosen surface of section (SOS) and use a finite approximation for the transfer operator in coordinate space. Computation of the eigenvalues of this matrix combined with a quantization condition, determines a set of semiclassical eigenvalues which are compared with those obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation. The classical dynamics of this billiard system undergoes a smoot…
Feshbach's projector technique is employed to quantize the electromagnetic field in optical resonators with an arbitray number of escape channels. We find spectrally overlapping resonator modes coupled due to the damping and noise inflicted by the external radiation field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasing.
Spectra of the geometric collective model of atomic nuclei are analyzed to identify chaotic correlations among nonrotational states. The model has been previously shown to exhibit a high degree of variability of regular and chaotic classical features with energy and control parameters. Corresponding signatures are now verified also on the quantum level for different schemes of quantization and with a variable classicality constant.
A way of construction of semiclassical wave function (SWF) based on the Maslov - Fedoriuk approach is proposed which appears to be appropriate also for systems with chaotic classical limits. Some classical constructions called skeletons are considered. The skeletons are generalizations of Arnolds' tori able to gather chaotic dynamics. SWF's are continued by caustic singularities in the configuration space rather then in the phase space using complex time method. The skeleton formulation provides us with a new algorithm for the semiclassical approximation method which is applied to construct SW…
The qualitative nature (i.e. integrable vs. chaotic) of the translational dynamics of a three-level atom in an optical lattice is shown to be controllable by varying the relative laser phase of two standing wave lasers. Control is explained in terms of the nonadiabatic transition between optical potentials and the corresponding regular to chaotic transition in mixed classical-quantum dynamics. The results are of interest to both areas of coherent control and quantum chaos.
We discuss certain analogies between quantization and discretization of classical systems on manifolds. In particular, we will apply the quantum dynamical entropy of Alicki and Fannes to numerically study the footprints of chaos in discretized versions of hyperbolic maps on the torus.
We quantize the solution to the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) scenario using the integral quantization method. Quantization smears the gravitational singularity avoiding its localization in the configuration space. The latter is defined in terms of spatial and temporal coordinates, which are treated on the same footing that enables respecting covariance of general relativity. The relative quantum perturbations grow as the system evolves towards the gravitational singularity. The quantum randomness amplifies the deterministic classical chaos of the BKL scenario. Additionally, our results …
We study nonequilibrium properties of small and chaotic quantum systems, i.e., non-integrable systems whose size is small in the sense that the separations of energy levels are non-negligible as compared with other relevant energy scales. The energy change $ΔE$ induced by a slowly-varying external field $λ(t)$ is evaluated when the range of the variation $Δλ$ is large so that the linear response theory breaks down. A new statistical theory is presented, by which we can predict $<ΔE>$, the average of $ΔE$ over a finite energy resolution $δE$, as a function of $λ(t)$ if we are given the density …
Full general relativity is almost certainly 'chaotic'. We argue that this entails a notion of nonintegrability: a generic general relativistic model, at least when coupled to cosmologically interesting matter, likely possesses neither differentiable Dirac observables nor a reduced phase space. It follows that the standard notion of observable has to be extended to include non-differentiable or even discontinuous generalized observables. These cannot carry Poisson-algebraic structures and do not admit a standard quantization; one thus faces a quantum representation problem of gravitational obse…
We demonstrate experimentally a new form of induced transparency, i.e., chaos-induced transparency, in a slightly deformed microcavity which support both continuous chaotic modes and discrete regular modes with Q factors exceeding 3X?10^7. When excited by a focused laser beam, the induced transparency in the transmission spectrum originates from the destructive interference of two parallel optical pathways: (i) directly refractive excitation of the chaotic modes, and (ii) excitation of the ultra-high-Q regular mode via chaos-assisted dynamical tunneling mechanism coupling back to the chaotic m…
Coherent state theory is shown to reproduce three categories of representations of the spectrum generating algebra for an algebraic model: (i) classical realizations which are the starting point for geometric quantization; (ii) induced unitary representations corresponding to prequantization; and (iii) irreducible unitary representations obtained in geometric quantization by choice of a polarization. These representations establish an intimate relation between coherent state theory and geometric quantization in the context of induced representations.
Quantum directed transport can be realized in non-interacting, deterministic, chaotic systems by appropriately breaking the spatio-temporal symmetries in the potential. In this work, the focus is on the class of interacting quantum systems whose classical limit is chaotic. In this limit, one subsystem effectively acts as a source of "noise" to the other leading to temporal symmetry breaking. Thus, the quantum directed currents can be generated with two ingredients -- broken spatial symmetry in the potential and presence of interactions. This is demonstrated in two-body interacting kicked rotor…
In a recent Letter [PRL 101, 074101 (2008)], Kapulkin and Pattanayak presented evidence that a quantum Duffing oscillator, sufficiently damped so that it is not classically chaotic, becomes chaotic in the transition region between quantum and classical motion. If true, this would be a striking result. However, Kapulkin and Pattanayak did not calculate the Lyapunov exponent for the system, usually regarded as the litmus-test of chaos. Here we perform this calculation, which throws considerable doubt upon their conclusions.
The transition from classical to quantum behavior for chaotic systems is understood to be accompanied by the suppression of chaotic effects as the relative size of $\hbar$ is increased. We show evidence to the contrary in the behavior of the quantum trajectory dynamics of a dissipative quantum chaotic system, the double-well Duffing oscillator. The classical limit in the case considered has regular behavior, but as the effective $\hbar$ is increased we see chaotic behavior. This chaos then disappears deeper into the quantum regime, which means that the quantum-classical transition in this case…
Coherent control of chaotic molecular systems, using laser-assisted alignment of sulphur dioxide (SO$_2$) molecules in the presence of a static electric field as an example, is considered. Conditions for which the classical version of this system is chaotic are established, and the quantum and classical analogs are shown to be in very good correspondence. It is found that the chaos present in the classical system does not impede the alignment, neither in the classical nor the quantum system. Using the results of numerical calculations, we suggest that laser-assisted alignment is stable against…
We investigate entanglement between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom for a model nonadiabatic system. We find that entanglement (measured by the von Neumann entropy of the subsystem for the eigenstates) is large in a statistical sense when the system shows ``nonadiabatic chaos'' behavior which was found in our previous work [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 63}, 066221 (2001)]. We also discuss non-statistical behavior of the eigenstates for the regular cases.
We study the differences between the process of decoherence induced by chaotic and regular environments. For this we analyze a family of simple models wich contain both regular and chaotic environments. In all cases the system of interest is a "quantum walker", i.e. a quantum particle that can move on a lattice with a finite number of sites. The walker interacts with an environment wich has a D dimensional Hilbert space. The results we obtain suggest that regular and chaotic environments are not distinguishable from each other in a (short) timescale t*, wich scales with the dimensionality of t…
We study the dynamics of a "kicked" quantum system undergoing repeated measurements of momentum. A diffusive behavior is obtained for a large class of Hamiltonians, even when the dynamics of the classical counterpart is not chaotic. These results can be interpreted in classical terms by making use of a "randomized" classical map. We compute the transition probability for the action variable and consider the semiclassical limit.
It is shown here and in the preceeding paper (quant-ph/0201129) that vector coherent state theory, the theory of induced representations, and geometric quantization provide alternative but equivalent quantizations of an algebraic model. The relationships are useful because some constructions are simpler and more natural from one perspective than another. More importantly, each approach suggests ways of generalizing its counterparts. In this paper, we focus on the construction of quantum models for algebraic systems with intrinsic degrees of freedom. Semi-classical partial quantizations, for wh…
We theoretically analyze the depletion dynamics of an ensemble of cold atoms in a quasi one-dimensional optical lattice where atoms in one of the lattice sites are subject to decay. Unlike the previous studies of this problem in R. Labouvie, {\em et. al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 116}, 235302 (2016) we focus on the case where the system is brought to the chaotic regime, that crucially modifies the depletion dynamics as compared to the regular case. It is shown that depletion of the affected site results in gradual depletion of the neighbouring sites according to $t^{1/3}$ scaling law. We also sho…
This paper shows that quantization induces a Lawvere-Tierney topology on (hence, a sheaf topos in) the quantum topos. We show that a quantization map from classical observables to self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space naturally induces geometric morphisms from presheaf topoi related to the classical system into a presheaf topos, called the quantum topos, on the context category consisting of commutative von Neumann algebras of bounded operators on the Hilbert space. By means of the geometric morphisms, we define Lawvere-Tierney topologies on the quantum topos (and their equivalent Grothend…
The dynamical signatures of quantum chaos in an isolated system are captured by the spectral form factor, which exhibits as a function of time a dip, a ramp, and a plateau, with the ramp being governed by the correlations in the level spacing distribution. While decoherence generally suppresses these dynamical signatures, the nonlinear non-Hermitian evolution with balanced gain and loss (BGL) in an energy-dephasing scenario can enhance manifestations of quantum chaos. In the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and random matrix Hamiltonians, BGL increases the span of the ramp, lowering the dip as well as …
We investigate non-inertial and gravitational effects on quantum states in electromagnetic fields and present the analytic solution for energy eigenstates for the Schrödinger equation including non-inertial, gravitational and electromagnetic effects. We find that in addition to the Landau quantization the rotation of spacetime itself leads to the additional quantization, and that the energy levels for an electron are different from those for a proton at the level of gravitational corrections.
The dynamics of an ensemble of identically prepared two-qubit systems is investigated which is subjected to the iteratively applied measurements and conditional selection of a typical entanglement purification protocol. It is shown that the resulting measurement-induced non-linear dynamics of the two-qubit state exhibits strong sensitivity to initial conditions and also true chaos. For a special class of initially prepared two-qubit states two types of islands characterize the asymptotic limit. They correspond to a separable and a maximally entangled two-qubit state, respectively, and their bo…
A cavity quantum electrodynamical scenario is proposed for implementing a Schrödinger microscope capable of amplifying differences between non orthogonal atomic quantum states. The scheme involves an ensemble of identically prepared two-level atoms interacting pairwise with a single mode of the radiation field as described by the Tavis-Cummings model. By repeated measurements of the cavity field and of one atom within each pair a measurement-induced nonlinear quantum transformation of the relevant atomic states can be realized. The intricate dynamical properties of this nonlinear quantum trans…

We discuss some features of the dissipative quantum model of brain in the frame of the formalism of quantum dissipation. Such a formalism is based on the doubling of the system degrees of freedom. We show that the doubled modes account for the quantum noise in the fluctuating random force in the system-environment coupling. Remarkably, such a noise manifests itself through the coherent structure of the system ground state. The entanglement of the system modes with the doubled modes is shown to be permanent in the infinite volume limit. In such a limit the trajectories in the memory space are c…
We investigate the decoherence properties of a central system composed of two spins 1/2 in contact with a spin bath. The dynamical regime of the bath ranges from a fully integrable integrable limit to complete chaoticity. We show that the dynamical regime of the bath determines the efficiency of the decoherence process. For perturbative regimes, the integrable limit provides stronger decoherence, while in the strong coupling regime the chaotic limit becomes more efficient. We also show that the decoherence time behaves in a similar way. On the contrary, the rate of decay of magnitudes like lin…
We demonstrate that a weakly disordered metal with short-range interactions exhibits a transition in the quantum chaotic dynamics when changing the temperature or the interaction strength. For weak interactions, the system displays exponential growth of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) of the current operator. The Lyapunov exponent of this growth is temperature-independent in the limit of vanishing interaction. With increasing the temperature or the interaction strength, the system undergoes a transition to a non-chaotic behaviour, for which the exponential growth of the OTOC is absen…
