Quantum mechanical phase space path integrals are re-examined with regard to the physical interpretation of the phase space variables involved. It is demonstrated that the traditional phase space path integral implies a meaning for the variables involved that is manifestly inconsistent. On the other hand, a phase space path integral based on coherent states entails variables that exhibit a self-consistent physical meaning.
Here we present an analysis of the paper "Universelle Bedeutung des Wirkungsquantums" (The universal meaning of the quantum of action), published by Jun Ishiwara in German in the "Proceedings of Tokyo Mathematico-Physical Society 8 (1915) 106-116". In his work, Ishiwara, established in the Sendai University, Japan, proposed - simultaneously with Arnold Sommerfeld, William Wilson and Niels Bohr in Europe - the phase-space-integral quantization, a rule that would be incorporated into the old-quantum-theory formalism. The discussions and analysis render this paper fully accessible to undergraduat…
Commented translation of the paper "Universelle Bedeutung des Wirkungsquantums", published by Jun Ishiwara in German in the Proceedings of Tokyo Mathematico-Physical Society 8 106-116 (1915). In his work, Ishiwara, tenured at Sendai University, Japan, proposed - simultaneously with Arnold Sommerfeld, William Wilson and Niels Bohr in Europe - the pase-space-integral quantization, a rule that would be incorporated into the old-quantum-mechanics formalism.
Quantum versions of cylindric phase space, like for the motion of a particle on the circle, are obtained through different families of coherent states. The latter are built from various probability distributions of the action variable. The method is illustrated with Gaussian distributions and uniform distributions on intervals, and resulting quantizations are explored.
The Casimir-Polder force is an attractive force between a polarizable atom and a conducting or dielectric boundary. Its original computation was in terms of the Lamb shift of the atomic ground state in an electromagnetic field (EMF) modified by boundary conditions along the wall and assuming a stationary atom. We calculate the corrections to this force due to a moving atom, demanding maximal preservation of entanglement generated by the moving atom-conducting wall system. We do this by using non-perturbative path integral techniques which allow for coherent back-action and thus can treat non-M…
Non-canonical quantization is based on certain reducible representations of canonical commutation relations. Relativistic formalism for electromagnetic non-canonical quantum fields is introduced. Unitary representations of the Poincaré group at the level of fields and states are explicitly given. Multi-photon and coherent states are introduced. Statistics of photons in a coherent state is Poissonian if an appropriately defined thermodynamic limit is performed. Radiation fields having a correct $S$ matrix are constructed. The $S$ matrix is given by a non-canonical coherent-state displacement op…
For a single degree of freedom confined mechanical system with given energy, we know that the motion is always periodic and action-angle variables are convenient choice as conjugate phase-space variables. We construct action-angle coherent states in view to provide a quantization scheme that yields precisely a given observed energy spectrum ${E_n}$ for such a system. This construction is based on a Bayesian approach: each family corresponds to a choice of probability distributions such that the classical energy averaged with respect to this probability distribution is precisely $E_n$ up to a c…
When an observable is measured on an evolving coherent quantum system twice, the first measurement generally alters the statistics of the second one, which is known as measurement back-action. We introduce, and push to its theoretical and experimental limits, a novel method of back-action evasion, whereby entangled collective measurements are performed on several copies of the system. This method is inspired by a similar idea designed for the problem of measuring quantum work [Perarnau-Llobet \textit{et al}., (https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.118.070601) Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{118}, 07060…
We construct semiclassical solutions of the symplectically covariant Schroedinger phase-space equation rigorously studied in a previous paper; we use for this purpose an adaptation of Littlejohn's nearby-orbit method. We take the opportunity to discuss in some detail the so fruitful notion of squeezed coherent state and the action of the metaplectic group on these states.
We discuss the coherent states for PT-/non-PT-Symmetric and non-Hermitian generalized Morse Potential obtained by using path integral formalism over the holomorphic coordinates. We transform the action of generalized Morse potential into two harmonic oscillators with a new parametric time to establish the parametric time coherent states. We calculate the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions in parabolic coordinates.
We study the back-action of a nearby measurement device on electrons undergoing coherent transfer via adiabatic passage (CTAP) in a triple-well system. The measurement is provided by a quantum point contact capacitively coupled to the middle well, thus acting as a detector sensitive to the charge configuration of the triple-well system. We account for this continuous measurement by treating the whole {triple-well + detector} as a closed quantum system. This leads to a set of coupled differential equations for the density matrix of the enlarged system which we solve numerically. This approach a…
We outline how Bohmian mechanics works: how it deals with various issues in the foundations of quantum mechanics and how it is related to the usual quantum formalism. We then turn to some objections to Bohmian mechanics, for example the fact that in Bohmian mechanics there is no back action of particle configurations upon wave functions. These lead us to our main concern: a more careful consideration of the meaning of the wave function in quantum mechanics, as suggested by a Bohmian perspective. We propose that the reason, on the universal level, that there is no action of configurations upon …
We propose and analyse a feasible experimental scheme for a quantum force sensor based on the elimination of back-action noise through coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) in a hybrid atom-cavity optomechanical setup assisted with squeezed vacuum injection. The force detector, which allows for a continuous, broad-band detection of weak forces well below the standard quantum limit (SQL), is formed by a single optical cavity simultaneously coupled to a mechanical oscillator and to an ensemble of ultracold atoms. The latter acts as a negative-mass oscillator so that atomic noise cancels exa…
This paper is a programmatic article presenting an outline of a new view of the foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. In short, the proposed foundations are given by the following statements: * Coherent quantum physics is physics in terms of a coherent space consisting of a line bundle over a classical phase space and an appropriate coherent product. * The kinematical structure of quantum physics and the meaning of the fundamental quantum observables are given by the symmetries of this coherent space, their infinitesimal generators, and associated operators on the quantum …
We employ the path integral approach developed in [29] to discuss the (generalized) harmonic oscillator in a noncommutative plane. The action for this system is derived in the coherent state basis with additional degrees of freedom. From this the action in the coherent state basis without any additional degrees of freedom is obtained. This gives the ground state spectrum of the system. We then employ the exact renormalization group approach to show that an equivalence can be constructed between this (noncommutative) system and a commutative system.
What are the quantum laws of electricity in mesoscopic circuits? This very fundamental question has also direct implications for the quantum engineering of nanoelectronic devices. Indeed, when a quantum coherent conductor is inserted into a circuit, its transport properties are modified. In particular, its conductance is reduced because of the circuit back-action. This phenomenon, called environmental Coulomb blockade, results from the granularity of charge transfers across the coherent conductor. Although extensively studied for a tunnel junction in a linear circuit, it is only fully understo…
Two long-standing problems in the construction of coherent state path integrals, the unwarranted assumption of path continuity and the ambiguous definition of the Hamiltonian symbol, are rigorously solved. To this end the fully controlled dual representation familiar from lattice quantum field theories is introduced. Dualization allows for both the step-by-step check in the construction of discrete path integrals and for the identification of the Hamiltonian and Berry phase part of the action, thus making both discrete and continuous path integrals consistently defined. Once the correct action…
