When an observable is measured on an evolving coherent quantum system twice, the first measurement generally alters the statistics of the second one, which is known as measurement back-action. We introduce, and push to its theoretical and experimental limits, a novel method of back-action evasion, whereby entangled collective measurements are performed on several copies of the system. This method is inspired by a similar idea designed for the problem of measuring quantum work [Perarnau-Llobet \textit{et al}., (https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.118.070601) Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{118}, 070601 (2017)]. By utilizing entanglement as a resource, we show that the back-action can be extremely suppressed compared to all previous schemes. Importantly, the back-action can be eliminated in highly coherent processes.
The general concept of entangled photon holes is based on a correlated absence of photon pairs in an otherwise constant optical background. Here we consider the specialized case when this background is confined to two well-defined time bins, which allows the formation of time-bin entangled photon holes. We show that when the typical coherent state background is replaced by a true single-photon (Fock state) background, the basic time-bin entangled photon-hole state becomes equivalent to one of the time-bin entangled photon-pair states. We experimentally demonstrate these ideas using a parametri…
We propose a deterministic scheme for teleporting an unknown qubit through continuous-variable entangled states in superconducting circuits. The qubit is a superconducting two-level system and the bipartite quantum channel is a photonic entangled coherent state between two cavities. A Bell-type measurement performed on the hybrid state of solid and photonic states brings a discrete-variable unknown electronic state to a continuous-variable photonic cat state in a cavity mode. This scheme further enables applications for quantum information processing in the same architecture of circuit-QED suc…
We extend the relation between absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states and quantum maximum distance separable (QMDS) codes by constructing whole families of QMDS codes from their parent AME states. We introduce a reduction-friendly form for the generator set of the stabilizer representation of an AME state, from which the stabilizer form for children codes, all QMDS, can be obtained. We then relate this to optimal codes for one-way quantum repeaters, by minimizing the short-term infrastructure cost as well as the long-term running cost of such quantum repeaters. We establish that AME state…
We describe two-photon absorption processes excited by entangled pairs, but not by non-entangled pairs of the same energy and polarization. Photon states are selected for destructive interference in the non-entangled process between different sequences of absorption via multiple intermediate states. A non-zero entangled absorption cross section is obtained by varying the entanglement time and pair delay parameters. Detailed energy and polarization requirements are derived for Rb 5S1/2 --> 5D3/2 transitions. Applications to Quantum Steganography and Quantum Key Distribution are discussed.
Quantum multi-hop teleportation is important in the field of quantum communication. In this study, we propose a quantum multi-hop communication model and a quantum routing protocol with multi-hop teleportation for wireless mesh backbone networks. Based on an analysis of quantum multi-hop protocols, a partially entangled Greenberger--Horne--Zeilinger (GHZ) state is selected as the quantum channel for the proposed protocol. Both quantum and classical wireless channels exist between two neighboring nodes along the route. With the proposed routing protocol, quantum information can be transmitted h…
The extent to which a given wave function, $ψ$, is entangled is measured by minimizing the norm of $ψ$ minus all possible unentangled functions. This measure is given by the largest eigenvalue of $ψ^\dagger ψ$, considered as an operator. The definition is basis independent.
Remote information concentration, the reverse process of quantum telecloning, is presented. In this scheme, quantum information originally from a single qubit, but now distributed into three spatially separated qubits, is remotely concentrated back to a single qubit via an initially shared entangled state without performing any global operations. This entangled state is an unlockable bound entangled state and we analyze its properties.
Time evolution is an indivisible part in any physics theory. Usually, people are accustomed to think that the universe is a fixed background and the system itself evolves step by step in time. However, Yakir Aharonov challenges this view using his two-vector formalism. In this paper, using the entangled history formalism, we attain three achievements.
Many existing schemes for linear-optical quantum computing (LOQC) depend on multiplexing (MUX), which uses dynamic routing to enable near-deterministic gates and sources to be constructed using heralded, probabilistic primitives. MUXing accounts for the overwhelming majority of active switching demands in current LOQC architectures. In this manuscript, we introduce relative multiplexing (RMUX), a general-purpose optimization which can dramatically reduce the active switching requirements for MUX in LOQC, and thereby reduce hardware complexity and energy consumption, as well as relaxing demands…
The realisation of a triggered entangled photon source will be of great importance in quantum information, including for quantum key distribution and quantum computation. We show here that: 1) the source reported in ``A semiconductor source of triggered entangled photon pairs''[1. Stevenson et al., Nature 439, 179 (2006)]} is not entangled; 2) the entanglement indicators used in Ref. 1 are inappropriate, relying on assumptions invalidated by their own data; and 3) even after simulating subtraction of the significant quantity of background noise, their source has insignificant entanglement.

We address the effects of realistic photodetection, with nonunit quantum efficiency and background noise (dark counts), on the performances of quantum communication schemes based on photon-number entangled states. We consider channels based on Gaussian twin-beam states and non-Gaussian two-mode coherent states and evaluate the channel capacity by optimizing the bit discrimination threshold. We found that TWB-based channels are more robust against noise than TMC-based ones and that this result is almost independent on the statistics of dark counts.
The concept of directionally unbiased optical multiports is introduced, in which photons may reflect back out the input direction. A linear-optical implementation is described, and the simplest three-port version studied. Symmetry arguments demonstrate potential for unusual quantum information processing applications. The devices impose group structures on two-photon entangled Bell states and act as universal Bell-state processors to implement probabilistic quantum gates acting on state symmetries. These multiports allow optical scattering experiments to be carried out on arbitrary undirected …
We demonstrate a fiber-based source of polarization-entangled photon pairs at visible wavelengths suitable for integration with local quantum processing schemes. The photons are created through birefringent phase-matching in spontaneous four-wave mixing inside a Sagnac interferometer. We address entanglement degradation due to temporal distinguishability of the photons to enable the generation of a spectrally unfiltered polarization-entangled photon-pair state with $95.86\pm0.10%$ fidelity to a maximally entangled Bell state, evaluated with a tomographic state reconstruction without applying a…
Trapped atomic ions are an ideal candidate for quantum network nodes, with long-lived identical qubit memories that can be locally entangled through their Coulomb interaction and remotely entangled through photonic channels. The integrity of this photonic interface is generally reliant on purity of single photons produced by the quantum memory. Here we demonstrate a single-photon source for quantum networking based on a trapped $^{138}\mbox{Ba}^+$ ion with a single photon purity of $ g^{2}(0)=(8.1\pm2.3)\times 10^{-5} $ without background subtraction. We further optimize the tradeoff between t…
Recently a new formulation of quantum mechanics has been introduced, based on signed classical field-less particles interacting with an external field by means of only creation and annihilation events. In this paper, we extend this novel theory to the case of many-body problems. We show that, when restricted to spatial finite domains and discrete momentum space, the proposed extended theory is equivalent to the time-dependent many-body Wigner Monte Carlo method. In this new picture, the treatment of entangled systems comes naturally and, therefore, we apply it to the study of quantum entangled…
Entanglement is a counterintuitive feature of quantum physics that is at the heart of quantum technology. High-dimensional quantum states offer unique advantages in various quantum information tasks. Integrated photonic chips have recently emerged as a leading platform for the generation, manipulation and detection of entangled photons. Here, we report a silicon photonic chip that uses novel interferometric resonance-enhanced photon-pair sources, spectral demultiplexers and high-dimensional reconfigurable circuitries to generate, manipulate and analyse path-entangled three-dimensional qutrit s…
We investigate the quantum state generated by optical parametric down-conversion in a $χ^{(2) } $ medium driven by two noncollinear light modes. The analysis shows the emergence of multipartite, namely 3- or 4-partite, entangled states in a subset of the spatio-temporal modes generated by the process. These appear as bright spots against the background fluorescence, providing an interesting analogy with the phenomenology recently observed in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals. We study two realistic setups: i) Non-critical phase-matching in a periodically poled Lithium Tantalate slab,…
Multidimensional optical signals are commonly recorded by varying the delays between time ordered pulses. These control the evolution of the density matrix and are described by ladder diagrams. We propose a new non-time-ordered protocol based on following the time evolution of the wavefunction and described by loop diagrams. The time variables in this protocol allow to observe different types of resonances and reveal information about intraband dephasing not readily available by time ordered techniques. The time variables involved in this protocol become coupled when using entangled light, whi…
We study how some recently proposed noncontextuality tests based on quantum interferometry are affected if the test particles propagate as open systems in presence of a gaussian stochastic background. We show that physical consistency requires the resulting markovian dissipative time-evolution to be completely positive.

Entangled states are a key resource in fundamental quantum physics, quantum cryp-tography, and quantum computation [1].To date, controlled unitary interactions applied to a quantum system, so-called "quantum gates", have been the most widely used method to deterministically create entanglement [2]. These processes require high-fidelity state preparation as well as minimizing the decoherence that inevitably arises from coupling between the system and the environment and imperfect control of the system parameters. Here, on the contrary, we combine unitary processes with engineered dissipation to…
Single photons are an important prerequisite for a broad spectrum of quantum optical applications. We experimentally demonstrate a heralded single-photon source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in collinear bulk optics, and fiber-coupled bolometric transition-edge sensors. Without correcting for background, losses, or detection inefficiencies, we measure an overall heralding efficiency of 83 %. By violating a Bell inequality, we confirm the single-photon character and high-quality entanglement of our heralded single photons which, in combination with the high heralding efficienc…
We consider the image of some classes of bipartite quantum states under a tensor product of random quantum channels. Depending on natural assumptions that we make on the states, the eigenvalues of their outputs have new properties which we describe. Our motivation is provided by the additivity questions in quantum information theory, and we build on the idea that a Bell state sent through a product of conjugated random channels has at least one large eigenvalue. We generalize this setting in two directions. First, we investigate general entangled pure inputs and show that that Bell states give…
We propose a classical to quantum information encoding system using non--orthogonal states and apply it to the problem of searching an element in a quantum list. We show that the proposed encoding scheme leads to an exponential gain in terms of quantum resources and, in some cases, to an exponential gain in the number of runs of the protocol. In the case where the output of the search algorithm is a quantum state with some particular physical property, the searched state is found with a single query to the introduced oracle. If the obtained quantum state must be converted back to classical inf…
Typical two-path interferometers are intensity-balanced because this maximizes the visibility of their interference patterns. Unbalancing the interferometer can be advised when back action on the object whose position is monitored is to be reduced. Variations of the intensity splitting ratios in two-path interferometers are analyzed in order to determine optimal interferometric performance while minimizing back action: it turns out that homodyning-like schemes perform best.
As a result of a non-trivial mixing matrix, neutrinos cannot be simultaneously in a flavor and mass eigenstate. We formulate and discuss information entropic relations that quantify the associated quantum uncertainty. We also formulate a protocol to determine the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix from quantum manipulations and measurements on an entangled lepton-neutrino pair. The entangled state features neutrino oscillations in a conditional probability involving measurements on the lepton and the neutrino. They can be switched off by choosing a specific observable on the lepton …
We address the question of optimality of entangled input states in quantum Gaussian memory channels. For a class of such channels, that can be traced back to the memoryless setting, we state a criterion which relate the optimality of entangled inputs to the symmetry properties of the channels' action. Several examples of channel models belonging to this class are discussed.
A Lagrangian formulation is constructed for particle interpretations of quantum mechanics, a well-known example of such an interpretation being the Bohm model. The advantages of such a description are that the equations for particle motion, field evolution and conservation laws can all be deduced from a single Lagrangian density expression. The formalism presented is Lorentz invariant. This paper follows on from a previous one which was limited to the single-particle case. The present paper treats the more general case of many particles in an entangled state. It is found that describing more t…
Generating entanglement between more parties is one of the central tasks and challenges in the backdrop of building quantum technologies. Here we propose a measurement-based protocol for producing multipartite entangled states which can be later fed into some network for realizing suitable quantum protocols. We consider weak entangling measurement on two parties as the basic unit of operation to create entanglement between more parties starting from an entangled state with a lesser number of parties and auxiliary systems in the form of a single-qubit or entangled state itself. We call the intr…
Bell's inequality in three coupled quantum dots (QDs) within cavity QED, including Forster and exciton-phonon interactions, is investigated theoretically. For an initially entangled state, Bell's inequality is valid for certain times and violated for some other times. It is shown that the system moves from a product state to a entangled state and back again during it's time evolution.
It is well known that Wheeler proposed several delayed choice experiments in order to show the impossibility to speak of the way a quantum system behaves before being detected. In a double-slit experiment, when do photons decide to travel by one way or by two ways? Delayed choice experiments seem to indicate that, strangely, it is possible to change the decision of the photons until the very last moment before they are detected. This led Wheeler to his famous sentence: No elementary quantum phenomenon is a phenomenon until it is a registered phenomenon, brought to a close by an irreversible ac…
Quantum networks require the crucial ability to entangle quantum nodes. A prominent example is the quantum repeater which allows overcoming the distance barrier of direct transmission of single photons, provided remote quantum memories can be entangled in a heralded fashion. Here we report the observation of heralded entanglement between two ensembles of rare-earth-ions doped into separate crystals. A heralded single photon is sent through a 50/50 beamsplitter, creating a single-photon entangled state delocalized between two spatial modes. The quantum state of each mode is subsequently mapped …
We present a theory for the estimation of a scalar or a vector magnetic field by its influence on an ensemble of trapped spin polarized atoms. The atoms interact off-resonantly with a continuous laser field, and the measurement of the polarization rotation of the probe light, induced by the dispersive atom-light coupling, leads to spin-squeezing of the atomic sample which enables an estimate of the magnetic field which is more precise than that expected from standard counting statistics. For polarized light and polarized atoms, a description of the non-classical components of the collective sp…
We explore the possibility of detecting entangled photon pairs from cosmic microwave background or other cosmological sources coming from two patches of the sky. The measurements use two detectors with different photon polarizer directions. When two photon sources are separated by a large angle relative to the earth, such that each detector has only one photon source in its field of view, a null test of unentangled photons can be performed. The deviation from this unentangled background is, in principle, the signature of photon entanglement. To confirm whether the deviation is consistent with …
Collective measurements can project a system into an entangled state with enhanced sensitivity for measuring a quantum phase, but measurement back-action has limited previous efforts to only modest improvements. Here we use a collective measurement to produce and directly observe, with no background subtraction, an entangled, spin-squeezed state with phase resolution improved in variance by a factor of 10.5(1.5), or 10.2(6) dB, compared to the initially unentangled ensemble of N = 4.8 x 10^5 87Rb atoms. The measurement uses a cavity-enhanced probe of an optical cycling transition to mitigate b…
We experimentally demonstrate shaping of the two-photon wavefunction of entangled photon-pairs, utilizing coherent pulse-shaping techniques. By performing spectral-phase manipulations we tailor the two-photon wavefunction exactly like a coherent ultrashort pulse. To observe the shaping we perform sum-frequency generation (SFG) with an ultrahigh flux of entangled photons. At the appropriate conditions, SFG performs as a coincidence detector with an ultrashort response time (~100 fs), enabling a direct observation of the two-photon wavefunction. This property also enables us to demonstrate backg…
For the quantum depolarizing channel with any finite dimension, we compare three schemes for channel identification: unentangled probes, probes maximally entangled with an external ancilla, and maximally entangled probe pairs. This comparison includes cases where the ancilla is itself depolarizing and where the probe is circulated back through the channel before measurement. Compared on the basis of (quantum Fisher) information gained per channel use, we find broadly that entanglement with an ancilla dominates the other two schemes, but only if entanglement is cheap relative to the cost per ch…
Quantum technologies hold great promise for revolutionizing photonic applications such as cryptography. Yet their implementation in real-world scenarios is held back, mostly due to sensitivity of quantum light to scattering. Recent developments in optimizing the shape of single photons introduce new ways to control quantum light. Nevertheless, shaping single photons in real-time remains a challenge due to the weak associated signals, which are too noisy for optimization processes. Here, we overcome this challenge and control scattering of entangled photons by shaping the classical laser beam t…
