In this paper we study a model quantum register $\cal R$ made of $N$ replicas (cells) of a given finite-dimensional quantum system S. Assuming that all cells are coupled with a common environment with equal strength we show that, for $N$ large enough, in the Hilbert space of $\cal R$ there exists a linear subspace ${\cal C}_N$ which is dynamically decoupled from the environment. The states in ${\cal C}_N$ evolve unitarily and are therefore decoherence-dissipation free. The space ${\cal C}_N$ realizes a noiseless quantum code in which information can be stored, in principle, for arbitrarily long time without being affected by errors.
We study the performance of simple quantum error correcting codes with respect to correlated noise errors characterized by a finite correlation strength. Specifically, we consider bit flip (phase flip) noisy quantum memory channels and use repetition and noiseless quantum codes. We characterize the performance of the codes by means of the entanglement fidelity as function of the error probability and degree of memory. Finally, comparing the entanglement fidelities of repetition and noiseless quantum codes, we find a threshold for the correlation strength that allows to select the code with bet…
We study noiseless subsystems on collective rotation channels of qudits, i.e., quantum channels with operators in the set ${\mathcal E}(d,n) = \{ U^{\otimes n}: U \in {\mathrm{SU}}(d)\}.$ This is done by analyzing the decomposition of the algebra ${\mathcal A}(d,n)$ generated by ${\mathcal E}(d,n)$. We summarize the results for the channels on qubits ($d=2$), and obtain the maximum dimension of the noiseless subsystem that can be used as the quantum error correction code for the channel. Then we extend our results to general $d$. In particular, it is shown that the code rate, i.e., the number …
Let ${\cal H}$ be the state-space of a quantum computer coupled with the environment by a set of error operators spanning a Lie algebra ${\cal L}.$ Suppose ${\cal L}$ admits a noiseless quantum code i.e., a subspace ${\cal C}\subset{\cal H}$ annihilated by ${\cal L}.$ We show that a universal set of gates over $\cal C$ is obtained by any generic pair of ${\cal L}$-invariant gates. Such gates - if not available from the outset - can be obtained by resorting to a symmetrization with respect to the group generated by ${\cal L}.$ Any computation can then be performed completely within the coding d…
We establish conditions under which the experimental verification of quantum error-correcting behavior against a linear set of error operators $\ce$ suffices for the verification of noiseless subsystems of an error algebra $\ca$ contained in $\ce$. From a practical standpoint, our results imply that the verification of a noiseless subsystem need not require the explicit verification of noiseless behavior for all possible initial states of the syndrome subsystem.
The possibility of quantum transmission of information via the induced fractional angular momentum by the Aharonov - Bohm vector potential is revealed. Its special advantage is that it is noiseless: Stray magnetic fields of environments influence the energy spectrum of the ion, but cannot contribute the fractional angular momentum to cause noise.
A universal deterministic noiseless quantum amplifier has been shown to be impossible. However, probabilistic noiseless amplification of a certain set of states is physically permissible. Regarding quantum state amplification as quantum state transformation, we show that deterministic noiseless amplification of coherent states chosen from a proper set is possible. The relation between input coherent states and gain of amplification for deterministic noiseless amplification is thus derived. Besides, the potential applications of amplification of coherent states in quantum key distribution (QKD)…
A generalization of the results of Rasetti and Zanardi concerning avoiding errors in quantum computers by using states preserved by evolution is presented. The concept of dynamical symmetry is generalized from the level of classical Lie algebras and groups to the level of dynamical symmetry based on quantum Lie algebras and quantum groups (in the sense of Woronowicz). A natural connection is proved between states preserved by representations of a quantum group and states preserved by evolution with dynamical symmetry of the appropriate universal enveloping algebra. Illustrative examples are di…
We propose a protocol for conditional suppression of losses in direct quantum state transmission over a lossy quantum channel. The method works by noiselessly attenuating the input state prior to transmission through a lossy channel followed by noiseless amplification of the output state. The procedure does not add any noise hence it keeps quantum coherence. We experimentally demonstrate it in the subspace spanned by vacuum and single-photon states, and consider its general applicability.
The noiseless amplification or attenuation are two heralded filtering operations that enable respectively to increase or decrease the mean field of any quantum state of light with no added noise, at the cost of a small success probability. We show that inserting such noiseless operations in a transmission line improves the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution over this line. Remarkably, these noiseless operations do not need to be physically implemented but can simply be simulated in the data post-processing stage. Hence, virtual noiseless amplification or attenuation am…
A generalization of the results of Rasetti and Zanardi concerning avoiding errors in quantum computers by using states preserved by evolution is presented. The concept of the dynamical symmetry is generalized from the level of classical Lie algebras and groups, to the level of a dynamical symmetry based on quantum Lie algebras and quantum groups (in the sense of Woronowicz). An intrinsic dependence of the concept of dynamical symmetry on the differential calculus (which holds also in the classical case) is stressed. A natural connection between quantum states invariant under a quantum group ac…
Encoding and manipulation of quantum information by means of topological degrees of freedom provides a promising way to achieve natural fault-tolerance that is built-in at the physical level. We show that this topological approach to quantum information processing is a particular instance of the notion of computation in a noiseless quantum subsystem. The latter then provide the most general conceptual framework for stabilizing quantum information and for preserving quantum coherence in topological and geometric systems.
Attenuating a quantum state using a beam splitter will introduce noise and decoherence. Here we show that heralding techniques can be used to attenuate Schrödinger cat states and squeezed vacuum states without any noise or decoherence [Mičuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 180503 (2012)]. Noiseless attenuation also preserves quantum interference effects in nonclassical states such as squeezed vacuum states.
We derive the general structure of noiseless subsystems for optical radiation contained in a sequence of pulses undergoing collective depolarization in an optical fiber. This result is used to identify optimal ways to implement quantum communication over a collectively depolarizing channel, which in general combine various degrees of freedom, such as polarization and phase, into joint hybrid schemes for protecting quantum coherence.
We show that the maximum transmission distance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution in presence of a Gaussian noisy lossy channel can be arbitrarily increased using a linear noiseless amplifier. We explicitly consider a protocol using amplitude and phase modulated coherent states with reverse reconciliation. We find that a noiseless amplifier with amplitude gain g can increase the maximum admissible losses by a factor 1/g^2.
We derive the general formula for the capacity of a noiseless quantum channel assisted by an arbitrary amount of noisy entanglement. In this capacity formula, the ratio of the quantum mutual information and the von Neumann entropy of the sender's share of the noisy entanglement plays the role of mutual information in the completely classical case. A consequence of our results is that bound entangled states cannot increase the capacity of a noiseless quantum channel.
We address quantum state engineering of single- and two-mode states by means of non-deterministic noiseless linear amplifiers (NLAs) acting on Gaussian states. In particular, we show that NLAs provide an effective scheme to generate highly non-Gaussian and non-classical states. Additionally, we show that the amplification of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state (twin-beam) may highly increase entanglement.
We propose a method to improve the performance of two entanglement-based continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols using noiseless linear amplifiers. The two entanglement-based schemes consist of an entanglement distribution protocol with an untrusted source and an entanglement swapping protocol with an untrusted relay. Simulation results show that the noiseless linear amplifiers can improve the performance of these two protocols, in terms of maximal transmission distances, when we consider small amounts of entanglement, as typical in realistic setups.
We generalize the concept of optical state truncation and noiseless linear amplification to enable truncation of the Fock-state expansion of an optical state to higher order and to simultaneously amplify it using linear optics. The resulting generalized quantum scissors are more efficient for noiseless linear amplification than employing multiple scissors in parallel and are experimentally practical. As a particular example, we focus on a third-order scissor device and demonstrate advantages in terms of fidelity with the target state, probability of success, distillable entanglement, and the a…
We develop a structure theory for decoherence-free subspaces and noiseless subsystems that applies to arbitrary (not necessarily unital) quantum operations. The theory can be alternatively phrased in terms of the superoperator perspective, or the algebraic noise commutant formalism. As an application, we propose a method for finding all such subspaces and subsystems for arbitrary quantum operations. We suggest that this work brings the fundamental passive technique for error correction in quantum computing an important step closer to practical realization.
A modified four-state CVQKD protocol is proposed to increase the maximum transmission distance and tolerable excess noise in the presence of Gaussian lossy and noisy channel by using a noiseless linear amplifier (NLA). A NLA with amplitude gain g can increase the maximum admission losses by 20log(g) dB.
Quantum information processing requires a high degree of isolation from the detrimental effects of the environment as well as an extremely precise level of control on the way quantum dynamics unfolds in the information-processing system. In this paper, we show how these two goals can be ideally achieved by hybridizing the concepts of noiseless subsystems and of holonomic quantum computation. An all-geometric universal computation scheme based on non-adiabatic and non-Abelian quantum holonomies embedded in a four-qubit noiseless subsystem for general collective decoherence is proposed. The impl…
Quantum steganography is the study of hiding secret quantum information by encoding it into what an eavesdropper would perceive as an innocent-looking message. Here we study an explicit steganographic encoding for Alice to hide her secret message in the syndromes of an error-correcting code, so that the encoding simulates a given noisy quantum channel. We calculate achievable rates of steganographic communication over noiseless quantum channels using this encoding. We give definitions of secrecy and reliability for the communication process, and with these assumptions derive upper bounds on th…
We introduce the concept of non-deterministic noiseless linear amplification. We propose a linear optical realization of this transformation that could be built with current technology. We discuss two applications; ideal probabilistic cloning of coherent states and distillation of continuous variable entanglement. For the latter example we demonstrate that highly pure entanglement can be distilled from transmission over a lossy channel.
We demonstrate that a phase-insensitive parametric amplifier, coupled to a quantum correlated source, can be used as a quantum information tap for noiseless three-way signal splitting. We find that the output signals are amplified noiselessly in two of the three output ports while the other can more or less keep its original input size without adding noise. This scheme is able to cascade and scales up for efficient information distribution in an optical network. Furthermore, we find this scheme satisfies the criteria for a non-ideal quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement and thus can serve a…
We present control schemes for open quantum systems that combine decoupling and universal control methods with coding procedures. By exploiting a general algebraic approach, we show how appropriate encodings of quantum states result in obtaining universal control over dynamically-generated noise-protected subsystems with limited control resources. In particular, we provide an efficient scheme for performing universal encoded quantum computation in a wide class of systems subjected to linear non-Markovian quantum noise and supporting Heisenberg-type internal Hamiltonians.
Non-deterministic quantum noiseless linear amplifiers are a new technology with interest in both fundamental understanding and new applications. With a noiseless linear amplifier it is possible to perform tasks such as improving the performance of quantum key distribution and purifying lossy channels. Previous designs for noiseless linear amplifiers involving linear optics and photon counting are non-optimal because they have a probability of success lower than the theoretical bound given by the theory of generalised quantum measurement. This paper develops a theoretical model which reaches th…
Entanglement distillation is an indispensable ingredient in extended quantum communication networks. Distillation protocols are necessarily non-deterministic and require advanced experimental techniques such as noiseless amplification. Recently it was shown that the benefits of noiseless amplification could be extracted by performing a post-selective filtering of the measurement record to improve the performance of quantum key distribution. We apply this protocol to entanglement degraded by transmission loss of up to the equivalent of 100km of optical fibre. We measure an effective entangled r…
Non-deterministic noiseless amplification of a single mode can circumvent the unique challenges to amplifying a quantum signal, such as the no-cloning theorem, and the minimum noise cost for deterministic quantum state amplification. However, existing devices are not suitable for amplifying the fundamental optical quantum information carrier, a qubit coherently encoded across two optical modes. Here, we construct a coherent two-mode amplifier, to demonstrate the first heralded noiseless linear amplification of a qubit encoded in the polarization state of a single photon. In doing so, we increa…
Noise is the price to pay when trying to clone or amplify arbitrary quantum states. The quantum noise associated to linear phase-insensitive amplifiers can only be avoided by relaxing the requirement of a deterministic operation. Here we present the experimental realization of a probabilistic noiseless linear amplifier that is able to amplify coherent states at the highest level of effective gain and final state fidelity ever reached. Based on a sequence of photon addition and subtraction, and characterized by a significant amplification and low distortions, this high-fidelity amplification sc…
We address quantum $M$-ary phase-shift keyed (PSK) communication channels in the presence of phase diffusion, and analyze the use of probabilistic noiseless linear amplifiers (NLA) to enhance performance of coherent signals. We consider both static and dynamical phase diffusion and assess the performances of the channel for ideal and realistic phase receivers. Our results show that NLA employed at the stage of signal preparations is a useful resource, especially in the regime of weak signals. We also discuss the interplay between the use of NLA, and the memory effects occurring with dynamical …
Amplification of quantum states is inevitably accompanied with the introduction of noise at the output. For protocols that are probabilistic with heralded success, noiseless linear amplification in theory may still possible. When the protocol is successful, it can lead to an output that is a noiselessly amplified copy of the input. When the protocol is unsuccessful, the output state is degraded and is usually discarded. Probabilistic protocols may improve the performance of some quantum information protocols, but not for metrology if the whole statistics is taken into consideration. We calcula…
The idea of signal amplification is ubiquitous in the control of physical systems, and the ultimate performance limit of amplifiers is set by quantum physics. Increasing the amplitude of an unknown quantum optical field, or more generally any harmonic oscillator state, must introduce noise. This linear amplification noise prevents the perfect copying of the quantum state, enforces quantum limits on communications and metrology, and is the physical mechanism that prevents the increase of entanglement via local operations. It is known that non-deterministic versions of ideal cloning and local en…
We examine the use of noiseless subsystems for quantum information processing between two parties who do not share a common reference frame. In particular we focus on Bell inequalities in curved spaces and outline a theoretical procedure to test a Bell inequality, demonstrating the wide applicability of noiseless subsystems.
Quantum mechanics imposes that any amplifier that works independently on the phase of the input signal has to introduce some excess noise. The impossibility of such a noiseless amplifier is rooted into unitarity and linearity of quantum evolution. A possible way to circumvent this limitation is to interrupt such evolution via a measurement, providing a random outcome able to herald a successful - and noiseless - amplification event. Here we show a successful realisation of such an approach; we perform a full characterization of an amplified coherent state using quantum homodyne tomography, and…
In this Letter we give a method for constructing sets of simple circuits that can determine the spectrum of a partially transposed density matrix, without requiring either a tomographically complete POVM or the addition of noise to make the spectrum non-negative. These circuits depend only on the dimension of the Hilbert space and are otherwise independent of the state.
The employ of a noiseless linear amplifier (NLA) has been proven as a useful tool for mitigating imperfections in quantum channels. Its analysis is usually conducted within specific frameworks, for which the set of input states for a given protocol is fixed. Here we obtain a more general description by showing that a noisy and lossy Gaussian channel followed by a NLA has a general description in terms of effective channels. This has the advantage of offering a simpler mathematical description, best suitable for mixed states, both Gaussian and non-Gaussian. We investigate the main properties of…
We discuss the recently introduced concept of non-deterministic noiseless linear amplification, demonstrating that such an operation can only be performed perfectly with vanishing probability of success. We show that a weak measurement, which imprints the weak value of an observable of a pre-selected and post-selected system onto a probe system, can be used to approximate probabilistic noiseless amplification. This result may be applied to various tasks in continuous variable quantum information, including entanglement concentration, probabilistic cloning, and in quantum repeaters. We discuss …
Counterfactual quantum key distribution (QKD) enables two parties to share a secret key using an interaction-free measurement. Here, we point out that the efficiency of counterfactual QKD protocols can be enhanced by including non-counterfactual bits. This inclusion potentially gives rise to the possibility of noiseless attacks, in which Eve can gain knowledge of the key bits without introducing any errors in the quantum channel. We show how this problem can be resolved in a simple way that naturally leads to the idea of "counterfactual security", whereby the non-counterfactual key bits are in…
We study the operational regime of a noiseless linear amplifier based on quantum scissors that can nondeterministically amplify the one photon component of a quantum state with weak excitation. It has been shown that an arbitrarily large quantum state can be amplified by first splitting it into weak excitation states using a network of beamsplitters. The output states of the network can then be coherently recombined. In this paper, we analyse the performance of such a device for distilling entanglement after transmission through a lossy quantum channel, and look at two measures to determine th…
Probabilistic amplification through photon addition, at the output of an Mach-Zehnder interferometer is discussed for a coherent input state. When a metric of signal to noise ratio is considered, nondeterministic, noiseless amplification of a coherent state shows improvement over a standard coherent state, for the general addition of $m$ photons. The efficiency of realizable implementation of photon addition is also considered and shows how the collected statistics of a post selected state, depend on this efficiency. We also consider the effects of photon loss and inefficient detectors.
Using double optical Raman rephasing, an inversion-free resonant Raman echo is studied in an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble of a solid medium, where the Raman optical field-excited spin coherence has a frozen propagation vector. Unlike photon echoes whose quantum memory application is strictly limited due to πrephasing pulse-induced population inversion causing quantum noises, the optical Raman field-excited spin echo is inherently silent owing to the frozen propagation vector. Thus, the doubly rephased Raman echo can be directly applied for quantum interface in a population inversion…
The viability of quantum communication schemes rely on sending quantum states of light over long distances. However, transmission loss can degrade the signal strength, adding noise. Heralded noiseless amplification of a quantum signal can provide a solution by enabling longer direct transmission distances and by enabling entanglement distillation. The central idea of heralded noiseless amplification---a conditional modification of the probability distribution over photon number of an optical quantum state---is suggestive of a parallel with weak measurement: in a weak measurement, learning part…
Differential phase shift quantum key distribution systems have a high potential for achieving high speed key generation. However, its unconditional security proof is still missing, even though it has been proposed for many years. Here, we prove its security against collective attacks with a weak coherent light source in the noiseless case (i.e. no bit error). The only assumptions are that quantum theory is correct, the devices are perfect and trusted and the key size is infinite. Our proof works on threshold detectors. We compute the lower bound of the secret key generation rate using the info…
In this article, we employ multimode radiation of a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (SPOPO) to build a cluster state through a conversion on the base of quantum memory cell. We demonstrate that by choosing an appropriate driving field we can ensure the effective writing of the only one supermode from the entire set of the SPOPO squeezed supermodes. Further, by changing the driving field profile at the readout, we convert the time profile of the retrieved signal while maintaining its quantum state. We demonstrate the possibilities of using the presented scheme by the example …
The entanglement structure between different frequency components within broadband quantum light pulses, forged at entanglement creation, represents a promising route to the practical delivery of many multipartite quantum information applications. However, the scalability of such applications is largely limited by the entanglement decoherence caused by photon loss. One promising method to combat such losses is noiseless linear amplification. However, while there have been various procedures that implement noiseless linear amplification on single-mode states, no realization has thus far been pr…
Quantum target detection aims to utilise quantum technologies to achieve performances in target detection not possible through purely classical means. Quantum illumination is an example of this, based on signal-idler entanglement, promising a potential 6 dB advantage in error exponent over its optimal classical counterpart. So far, receiver designs achieving this optimal reception remain elusive with many proposals based on Gaussian processes appearing unable to utilise quantum information contained within Gaussian state sources. This paper considers the employment of a noiseless linear amplif…
Noiseless subsystems offer a general and efficient method for protecting quantum information in the presence of noise that has symmetry properties. A paradigmatic class of error models displaying non-trivial symmetries emerges under collective noise behavior, which implies a permutationally-invariant interaction between the system and the environment. We describe experiments demonstrating the preservation of a bit of quantum information encoded in a three qubit noiseless subsystem for general collective noise. A complete set of input states is used to determine the super-operator for the imple…
When the environmental disturbace to a quantum system has a wavelength much larger than the system size, all qubits localized within a small area are under action of the same error operators. Noiseless subsystem and decoherence free subspace are known to correct such collective errors. We construct simple quantum circuits, which implement these collective error correction codes, for a small number $n$ of physical qubits. A single logical qubit is encoded with $n=3$ and $n=4$, while two logical qubits are encoded with $n=5$. The recursive relations among the subspaces employed in noiseless subs…
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is one of the most intriguing features of quantum mechanics and an important resource for quantum communication. For practical applications, it remains a challenge to protect EPR steering from decoherence due to its intrinsic difference from entanglement. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian EPR steering and entanglement in lossy and noisy environments using measurement-based noiseless linear amplification. Different from entanglement distillation, the extension of steerable region happens in the distillation of EPR steering be…
The interest in decoherence-free, or noiseless subsystems (DFS/NSs) of quantum systems is both of fundamental and practical interest. Understanding the invariance of a set of states under certain transformations is mutually associated with a better understanding of some fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics as well as the practical utility of invariant subsystems. For example, DFS/NSs are potentially useful for protecting quantum information in quantum cryptography and quantum computing as well as enabling universal computation. Here we discuss transformations which are compatible with a DF…
We address the characterization of the gain parameter of a non-deterministic noiseless linear amplifier (NLA) and compare the performances of different estimation strategies using tools from quantum estimation theory. At first, we show that, contrary to naive expectations, post-selecting only the amplified states does not offer the most accurate estimate. We then focus on minimal implementations of a NLA, i.e. those obtained by coupling the input state to a two-level system, and show that the maximal amount of information about the gain of the NLA is obtained by measuring the whole composite s…
A potential implementation of quantum-computation schemes in semiconductor-based structures is proposed. In particular, an array of quantum dots is shown to be an ideal quantum register for a noiseless information encoding. In addition to the suppression of phase-breaking processes in quantum dots due to the well-known phonon bottleneck, we show that a proper quantum encoding allows to realise a decoherence-free evolution on a time-scale long compared to the femtosecond scale of modern ultrafast laser technology. This result might open the way to the realization of semiconductor-based quantum …
