A particle-number-conserving Bogoliubov method which demonstrates the validity of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a highly condensed Bose gas
The Bogoliubov method for the excitation spectrum of a Bose-condensed gas is generalized to apply to a gas with an exact large number $ N$ of particles. This generalization yields a description of the Schrödinger picture field operators as the product of an annihilation operator $A$ for the total number of particles and the sum of a ``condensate wavefunction'' $ξ(x)$ and a phonon field operator $χ(x)$ in the form $ψ(x) \approx A\{ξ(x) + χ(x)/\sqrt{N}\}$ when the field operator acts on the N particle subspace. It is then possible to expand the Hamiltonian in decreasing powers of $\sqrt{N}$, an thus obtain solutions for eigenvalues and eigenstates as an asymptotic expansion of the same kind. It is also possible to compute all matrix elements of field operators between states of different N.
The BEC regime of a cold fermi gas is characterised by coupled atoms (dimers) which, superficially, look like elementary bosons. We examine how simply-bosonic they really are; firstly, in the Bogoliubov approximation and further, through new actions for the BEC regime in which dimers are represented by coupled Gross-Pitaevskii fields. We find identity at the level of the Bogoliubov approximation in the deep BEC regime, permitting a simple Gross-Pitaevskii description. This fails rapidly as we move towards the BCS regime. However, even in the deep BEC regime there is an intrinsic difference if …
Calculations of magnetic field produced by spin-vortex-induced loop currents in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ thin films using the particle-number conserving Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism
In the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory of BEC the Bogoliubov transformation between quasiparticles and particles is nonlinear. We invert this nonlinear transformation and give general expression for eigenstates of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian in particle representation. The particle representation unveils structure of a condensate multiparticle wavefunction. We give several examples to illustrate the general formalism.

We study the relation between the eigenfrequencies of the Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates, and the eigenvalues of the Jacobian stability matrix in a variational approach which maps the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to a system of equations of motion for the variational parameters. We do this for Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive contact interaction in an external trap, and for a simple model of a self-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive 1/r interaction. The stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and Bogoliubov excitations are calculated using…
An amended proof of Pitaevskii-Stringari's theorem is given in mathematically coherent manner without resorting to the Bogoliubov approximation. This approach is based on the orthodox quantum field theory which rigorously maintains the canonical commutation relations. Moreover, we make a sound argument by taking the thermodynamic limit which the authors of the original papers did not refer to. We conclude that there is no Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC) as a phase transition based on the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking (SSB) of the global $U(1)$ gauge symmetry in flat one dimensional geometry e…
We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the quasiperiodic kicked rotor described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with periodic boundary conditions. As the interactions are increased, Bogoliubov excitations appear and deplete the condensate; we characterize this instability by considering the population of the first Bogoliubov mode, and show that it does not prevent, for small enough interaction strengths, the observation of the transition. However, the predicted subdiffusive behavior is not observed in the stable region. For higher interaction strengths, the condensate may be str…
We introduce a non-commutative generalization of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for one-dimensional quantum gasses and quantum liquids. This generalization is obtained by applying the time-dependent variational principle to the variational manifold of continuous matrix product states. This allows for a full quantum description of many body system ---including entanglement and correlations--- and thus extends significantly beyond the usual mean-field description of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is known to fail for (quasi) one-dimensional systems. By linearizing around a stationary soluti…
We assume the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate as a superposition of Gaussian wave packets, with time-dependent complex width parameters, insert it into the mean-field energy functional corresponding to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and apply the time-dependent variational principle. In this way the GPE is mapped onto a system of coupled equations of motion for the complex width parameters, which can be analyzed using the methods of nonlinear dynamics. We perform a stability analysis of the fixed points of the nonlinear system, and demonstrate that the eigenvalues …
In a gas of $N$ weakly interacting bosons \cite{Bogo1, Bogo2}, a truncated canonic Hamiltonian $\widetilde{h}_c$ follows from dropping all the interaction terms between free bosons with momentum $\hbar\mathbf{k}\ne\mathbf{0}$. Bogoliubov Canonic Approximation (BCA) is a further manipulation, replacing the number \emph{operator} $\widetilde{N}_{in}$ of free particles in $\mathbf{k}=\mathbf{0}$, with the total number $N$ of bosons. BCA transforms $\widetilde{h}_c$ into a different Hamiltonian $H_{BCA}=\sum_{\mathbf{k}\ne\mathbf{0}}ε(k)B^\dagger_\mathbf{k}B_\mathbf{k}+const$, where $B^\dagger_\ma…
The impact of interparticle correlations on the behavior of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) is discussed using two approaches. In the first approach, the wavefunction of a BEC is encoded in the $N$-particle sector of an extended "catalytic state". Going to a time-dependent interaction picture, we can organize the effective Hamiltonian by powers of ${N}^{-1/2}$. Requiring the terms of order ${N}^{1/2}$ to vanish, we get the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation. Going to the next order, $N^0$, we obtain the number-conserving Bogoliubov approximation. Our approach allows one to stay in the Schrödinger pict…
A simple four-mode Bose-Hubbard model with intrinsic time scale separation can be considered as a paradigm for mesoscopic quantum systems in thermal contact. In our previous work we showed that in addition to coherent particle exchange, a novel slow collective excitation can be identified by a series of Holstein-Primakoff transformations. This resonant energy exchange mode is not predicted by linear Bogoliubov theory, and its frequency is sensitive to interactions among Bogoliubov quasi-particles; it may be referred to as a second Josephson oscillation, in analogy to the second sound mode of l…
Bose-Einstein condensates with an attractive 1/r interaction and with dipole-dipole interaction are investigated in the framework of the Gaussian variational ansatz introduced by S. Rau, J. Main, and G. Wunner [Phys. Rev. A, submitted]. We demonstrate that the method of coupled Gaussian wave packets is a full-fledged alternative to direct numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, or even superior in that coupled Gaussians are capable of producing both, stable and unstable states of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and thus of giving access to yet unexplored regions of the space of so…
A Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential, where atoms are incoupled to one side and extracted from the other, can in the mean-field limit be described by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric external potential. If the strength of the in- and outcoupling is increased two $\mathcal{PT}$ broken states bifurcate from the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric ground state. At this bifurcation point a stability change of the ground state is expected. However, it is observed that this stability change does not occur exactly at the bifurcation but at a …
We derive and analyze shock-wave solutions of hydrodynamic equations describing repulsively interacting one dimensional Bose gas. We also use the number-conserving Bogolubov approach to verify accuracy of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in shock wave problems. We show that quantum corrections to dynamics of shocks (dark-shock-originated solitons) in a Bose-Einstein condensate are negligible (important) for a realistic set of system parameters. We point out possible signatures of a Bose-Einstein condensate -- Tonks crossover in shock dynamics. Our findings can be directly verified in different ex…
We consider a Bogolibov-de Geenes (BdG) Hamiltonian, which is a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with pseudo-Hermiticity, for a system of (pseudo) spin-$1/2$ bosons in a honeycomb lattice under the condition that the population difference between the two spin components, i.e., magnetization, is a constant. Such a system is capable of acting as a topological amplifier, under time-reversal symmetry, with stable bulk bands but unstable edge modes which can be populated at an exponentially fast rate. We quantitatively study the topological properties of this model within the framework of the 38-fold way …
