We study the level statistics of an interacting multi-qubit system, namely the kicked Ising spin chain, in the regime of quantum chaos. Long range quasi-energy level statistics show effects analogous to the ones observed in semi-classical systems due to the presence of classical periodic orbits, while short range level statistics display perfect statistical agreement with random matrix theory. Even though our system possesses no classical limit, our result suggest existence of an important non-universal system specific behavior at short time scale, which clearly goes beyond finite size effects in random matrix theory.
We discover numerically that a moving wave packet in a quantum chaotic billiard will always evolve into a quantum state, whose density probability distribution is exponential. This exponential distribution is found to be universal for quantum chaotic systems with rigorous proof. In contrast, for the corresponding classical system, the distribution is Gaussian. We find that the quantum exponential distribution can smoothly change to the classical Gaussian distribution with coarse graining.
We calculate the S-matrix correlation function for chaotic scattering on quantum graphs and show that it agrees with that of random--matrix theory (RMT). We also calculate all higher S-matrix correlation functions in the Ericson regime. These, too, agree with RMT results as far as the latter are known. We concjecture that our results give a universal description of chaotic scattering.
The prediction of the response of a closed system to external perturbations is one of the central problems in quantum mechanics, and in this respect, the local density of states (LDOS) provides an in- depth description of such a response. The LDOS is the distribution of the overlaps squared connecting the set of eigenfunctions with the perturbed one. Here, we show that in the case of closed systems with classically chaotic dynamics, the LDOS is a Breit-Wigner distribution under very general perturbations of arbitrary high intensity. Consequently, we derive a semiclassical expression for the wi…

The population decay due to a small opening in an otherwise closed cavity supporting chaotic classical dynamics displays a quantum correction on top of the classical exponential form, a pure manifestation of quantum coherence that acquires a universal form and can be explained by path interference. Being coherent, such enhancement is prone to decoherence effects due to the coupling of the system to an external environment. We study this interplay between incoherent and coherent quantum corrections to decay by evaluating, within a Caldeira-Legget scenario, off-diagonal contributions to the deco…
We present a semiclassical approach to eigenfunction statistics in chaotic and weakly disordered quantum systems which goes beyond Random Matrix Theory, supersymmetry techniques, and existing semiclassical methods. The approach is based on a generalization of Berry's Random Wave Model, combined with a consistent semiclassical representation of spatial two-point correlations. We derive closed expressions for arbitrary wavefunction averages in terms of universal coefficients and sums over classical paths, which contain, besides the supersymmetry results, novel oscillatory contributions. Their ph…
This arXiv repository is a bundle of two closely related papers. Abstract of the first paper: In systems governed by "chaotic" local Hamiltonians, we conjecture the universality of eigenstate entanglement (defined as the average entanglement entropy of all eigenstates) by proposing an exact formula for its dependence on the subsystem size. This formula is derived from an analytical argument based on a plausible assumption, and is supported by numerical simulations. Abstract of the second paper: In systems governed by chaotic local Hamiltonians, the first paper conjectured the universality of t…
The spectral properties of interacting strongly chaotic systems are investigated for growing interaction strength. A very sensitive transition from Poisson statistics to that of random matrix theory is found. We introduce a new random matrix ensemble modeling this dynamical symmetry breaking transition which turns out to be universal and depends on a single scaling parameter only. Coupled kicked rotors, a dynamical systems paradigm for such transitions, are compared with this ensemble and excellent agreement is found for the nearest-neighbor-spacing distribution. It turns out that this transit…
We study the ensemble of complex symmetric matrices. The ensemble is useful in the study of effect of dissipation on systems with time reversal invariance. We consider the nearest neighbor spacing distribution and spacing ratio to investigate the fluctuation statistics and show that these statistics are similar to that of dissipative chaotic systems with time reversal invariance. We show that, unlike cubic repulsion in eigenvalues of Ginibre matrices, these ensemble exhibits a weaker repulsion. The nearest neighbor spacing distribution exhibits $P(s) \propto -s^3 \log s$ for small spacings. We…
A fundamental question in the study of chemical reactions is how reactions proceed at a collision energy close to absolute zero. This question is no longer hypothetical: quantum degenerate gases of atoms and molecules can now be created at temperatures lower than a few tens of nanoKelvin. In this work we consider the benchmark ultracold reaction between, the most-celebrated ultracold molecule, KRb and K. For the first time we map out an accurate ab initio ground state potential energy surface of the KRbK complex in full dimensionality and report numerically exact quantum-mechanical reaction dy…
We study the quantum mechanics of a billiard (Robnik 1983) in the regime of mixed-type classical phase space (the shape parameter λ=0.15) at very high-lying eigenstates, starting at about 1.000.000th eigenstate and including the consecutive 587654 eigenstates. By calculating the normalized Poincaré Husimi functions of the eigenstates and comparing them with the classical phase space structure, we introduce the overlap criterion which enables us to separate with great accuracy and reliability the regular and chaotic eigenstates, and the corresponding energies. The chaotic eigenstates appear all…
We demonstrate that the energy or quasienergy level spacing distribution in dynamically localized chaotic eigenstates is excellently described by the Brody distribution, displaying the fractional power law level repulsion. This we show in two paradigmatic systems, namely for the fully chaotic eigenstates of the kicked rotator at K=7, and for the chaotic eigenstates in the mixed-type billiard system (Robnik 1983), after separating the regular and chaotic eigenstates by means of the Poincaré Husimi function, at very high energies with great statistical significance (587654 eigenstates, starting …
We derive the photocount statistics of the radiation emitted from a chaotic laser resonator in the regime of single-mode lasing. Random spatial variations of the resonator eigenfunctions lead to strong mode-to-mode fluctuations of the laser emission. The distribution of the mean photocount over an ensemble of modes changes qualitatively at the lasing transition, and displays up to three peaks above the lasing threshold.
We study Wigner function value statistics of classically chaotic quantum maps on compact 2D phase space. We show that the Wigner function statistics of a random state is a Gaussian, with the mean value becoming negligible compared to the width in the semi-classical limit. Using numerical example of quantized sawtooth map we demonstrate that the relaxation of time-dependent Wigner function statistics, starting from a coherent initial state, takes place on a logarithmically short log (hbar) time scale.
Highly degenerate chaotic radiation has a Gaussian density matrix and a large occupation number of modes $f $. If it is passed through a weakly transmitting barrier, its counting statistics is close to Poissonian. We show that a second identical barrier, in series with the first, drastically modifies the statistics. The variance of the photocount is increased above the mean by a factor $f$ times a numerical coefficient. The photocount distribution reaches a limiting form with a Gaussian body and highly asymmetric tails. These are general consequences of the combination of weak transmission and…
We conjecture that in chaotic quantum systems with escape the intensity statistics for resonance states universally follows an exponential distribution. This requires a scaling by the multifractal mean intensity which depends on the system and the decay rate of the resonance state. We numerically support the conjecture by studying the phase-space Husimi function and the position representation of resonance states of the chaotic standard map, the baker map, and a random matrix model, each with partial escape.
The production of orbitally entangled electrons in quantum-chaotic dots is investigated from a statistical point of view. The degree of entanglement is quantified through the concurrence and the entanglement of formation. We calculate the complete statistical distributions of the entanglement measures by using random matrix theory. Simple analytical expressions are provided for the concurrence distributions. We identify clear signatures of time-reversal invariance in the production of entanglement at the level of the entanglement-measure distributions, such as the ability of producing maximall…
In this letter, we demonstrate that a non-Hermitian Random Matrix description can account for both spectral and spatial statistics of resonance states in a weakly open chaotic wave system with continuously distributed losses. More specifically, the statistics of resonance states in an open 2D chaotic microwave cavity are investigated by solving the Maxwell equations with lossy boundaries subject to Ohmic dissipation. We successfully compare the statistics of its complex-valued resonance states and associated widths with analytical predictions based on a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian mode…
We derive universal entanglement entropy and Schmidt eigenvalue behaviors for the eigenstates of two quantum chaotic systems coupled with a weak interaction. The progression from a lack of entanglement in the noninteracting limit to the entanglement expected of fully randomized states in the opposite limit is governed by the single scaling transition parameter, $Λ$. The behaviors apply equally well to few- and many-body systems, e.g.\ interacting particles in quantum dots, spin chains, coupled quantum maps, and Floquet systems as long as their subsystems are quantum chaotic, and not localized …
We study the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in chaotic conformal field theories (CFTs) of arbitrary dimensions. Assuming local ETH, we compute the reduced density matrix of a ball-shaped subsystem of finite size in the infinite volume limit when the full system is an energy eigenstate. This reduced density matrix is close in trace distance to a density matrix, to which we refer as the ETH density matrix, that is independent of all the details of an eigenstate except its energy and charges under global symmetries. In two dimensions, the ETH density matrix is universal for all theori…
An exact analytical description of extreme intensity statistics in complex random states is derived. These states have the statistical properties of the Gaussian and Circular Unitary Ensemble eigenstates of random matrix theory. Although the components are correlated by the normalization constraint, it is still possible to derive compact formulae for all values of the dimensionality N. The maximum intensity result slowly approaches the Gumbel distribution even though the variables are bounded, whereas the minimum intensity result rapidly approaches the Weibull distribution. Since random matrix…
Distributions of eigenmodes are widely concerned in both bounded and open systems. In the realm of chaos, counting resonances can characterize the underlying dynamics (regular vs. chaotic), and is often instrumental to identify classical-to-quantum correspondence. Here, we study, both theoretically and experimentally, the statistics of chaotic resonances in an optical microcavity with a mixed phase space of both regular and chaotic dynamics. Information on the number of chaotic modes is extracted by counting regular modes, which couple to the former via dynamical tunneling. The experimental da…
We analyze a model quantum dynamical system subjected to periodic interaction with an environment, which can describe quantum measurements. Under the condition of strong classical chaos and strong decoherence due to large coupling with the measurement device, the spectra of the evolution operator exhibit an universal behavior. A generic spectrum consists of a single eigenvalue equal to unity, which corresponds to the invariant state of the system, while all other eigenvalues are contained in a disk in the complex plane. Its radius depends on the number of the Kraus measurement operators, and d…
The photon statistics and bunching of a semiconductor laser with external optical feedback are investigated experimentally and theoretically. In a chaotic regime, the photon number distribution is measured and undergoes a transition from Bose-Einstein distribution to Poisson distribution with increasing the mean photon number. The second order degree of coherence decreases gradually from 2 to 1. Based on Hanbury Brown-Twiss scheme, pronounced photon bunching is observed experimentally for various injection currents and feedback strengths, which indicates the randomness of the associated emissi…
Characterizing the work statistics of driven complex quantum systems is generally challenging because of the exponential growth with the system size of the number of transitions involved between different energy levels. We consider the quantum work distribution associated with the driving of chaotic quantum systems described by random matrix Hamiltonians and characterize exactly the work statistics associated with a sudden quench for arbitrary temperature and system size. Knowledge of the work statistics yields the Loschmidt echo dynamics of an entangled state between two copies of the system …
The quantum ratchet effect in fully chaotic systems is approached by studying, for the first time, \emph{statistical} properties of the ratchet current over well-defined sets of initial states. Natural initial states in a semiclassical regime are those that are \emph{phase-space uniform} with the \emph{maximal possible} resolution of one Planck cell. General arguments in this regime, for quantum-resonance values of a scaled Planck constant $\hbar$, predict that the distribution of the current over all such states is a zero-mean Gaussian with variance $\sim D\hbar^{2}/(2π^{2})$, where $D$ is th…
We investigate the Schrödinger (non-relativistic) and the Dirac (``relativistic") billiards in the universal regime. The study is based on a non-ideal quantum resonant scattering numerical simulation. We show universal results that reveal anomalous behavior on the conductance, on the shot-noise power and on the respective eigenvalues distributions. In particular, we demonstrate the Klein's paradox in the graphene and tunable suppression/amplification transitions on the typical observables of the quantum dots.

We consider statistics of electronic transport in chaotic cavities where time-reversal symmetry is broken and one of the leads is weakly non-ideal, i.e. it contains tunnel barriers characterized by tunneling probabilities $Γ_i$. Using symmetric function expansions and a generalized Selberg integral, we develop a systematic perturbation theory in $1-Γ_i$ valid for arbitrary number of channels, and obtain explicit formulas up to second order for the average and variance of the conductance, and for the average shot-noise. Higher moments of the conductance are considered to leading order.
Isolated quantum system in a pure state may be perceived as thermal if only substantially small fraction of all degrees of freedom is probed. We propose that in a chaotic quantum many-body system all states with sufficiently small energy fluctuations are approximately thermal. We refer to this hypothesis as Canonical Universality (CU). The CU hypothesis complements the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) which proposes that for chaotic systems individual energy eigenstates are thermal. Integrable and MBL systems do not satisfy CU. We provide theoretical and numerical evidence supporting…
We study nonequilibrium properties of small and chaotic quantum systems, i.e., non-integrable systems whose size is small in the sense that the separations of energy levels are non-negligible as compared with other relevant energy scales. The energy change $ΔE$ induced by a slowly-varying external field $λ(t)$ is evaluated when the range of the variation $Δλ$ is large so that the linear response theory breaks down. A new statistical theory is presented, by which we can predict $<ΔE>$, the average of $ΔE$ over a finite energy resolution $δE$, as a function of $λ(t)$ if we are given the density …
