Kochen-Specker theorem rules out the non-contextual assignment of values to physical magnitudes. Here we enrich the usual orthomodular structure of quantum mechanical propositions with modal operators. This enlargement allows to refer consistently to actual and possible properties of the system. By means of a topological argument, more precisely in terms of the existence of sections of sheaves, we give an extended version of Kochen-Specker theorem over this new structure. This allows us to prove that contextuality remains a central feature even in the enriched propositional system.

The sheaf theoretic description of non-locality and contextuality by Abramsky and Brandenburger sets the ground for a topological study of these peculiar features of quantum mechanics. This viewpoint has been recently developed thanks to sheaf cohomology, which provides a sufficient condition for contextuality of empirical models in quantum mechanics and beyond. Subsequently, a number of studies proposed methods to detect contextuality based on different cohomology theories. However, none of these cohomological descriptions succeeds in giving a full invariant for contextuality applicable to co…
This paper introduces an extension of the de Broglie-Bohm-Bell formulation of quantum mechanics, which includes intrinsic particle degrees of freedom, such as spin, as elements of reality. To evade constraints from the Kochen-Specker theorem the discrete spin values refer to a specific basis -- i.e., a single spin vector orientation for each particle; these spin orientations are, however, not predetermined, but dynamic and guided by the (reduced, spin-only) wave function of the system, which is conditional on the realized location values of the particles. In this way, the unavoidable contextua…
Recently, an interesting form of non-classical effect which can be considered as a form of contextuality within quantum mechanics, has been demonstrated for a four-level system by discriminating the different routes that are taken for measuring a single observable. In this paper, we provide a simpler version of that proof for a single qutrit, which is also within the formalism of quantum mechanics and without recourse to any realist hidden variable model. The degeneracy of the eigenvalues and the L$\ddot{u}$der projection rule play important role in our proof.
In this paper we present a new categorical approach which attempts to provide an original understanding of QM. Our logos categorical approach attempts to consider the main features of the quantum formalism as the standpoint to develop a conceptual representation that explains what the theory is really talking about --rather than as problems that need to be bypassed in order to allow a restoration of a classical "common sense" understanding of what there is. In particular, we discuss a solution to Kochen-Specker contextuality through the generalization of the meaning of global valuation. This i…
A review is made of the field of contextuality in quantum mechanics. We study the historical emergence of the concept from philosophical and logical issues. We present and compare the main theoretical frameworks that have been derived. Finally, we focus on the complex task of establishing experimental tests of contextuality. Throughout this work, we try to show that the conceptualisation of contextuality has progressed through different complementary perspectives, before summoning them together to analyse the signification of contextuality experiments. Doing so, we argue that contextuality eme…
Realist interpretations of quantum mechanics presuppose the existence of elements of reality that are independent of the actions used to reveal them. Such a view is challenged by several no-go theorems that show quantum correlations cannot be explained by non-contextual ontological models, where physical properties are assumed to exist prior to and independently of the act of measurement. However, all such contextuality proofs assume a traditional notion of causal structure, where causal influence flows from past to future according to ordinary dynamical laws. This leaves open the question of …
A central result in the foundations of quantum mechanics is the Kochen-Specker theorem. In short, it states that quantum mechanics cannot be reconciled with classical models that are noncontextual for ideal measurements. The first explicit derivation by Kochen and Specker was rather complex, but considerable simplifications have been achieved thereafter. We propose a systematic approach to find minimal Hardy-type and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-type (GHZ-type) proofs of the Kochen-Specker theorem, these are characterized by the fact that the predictions of classical models are opposite to the …
Experiment Investigating the Connection between Weak Values and Contextuality
Pusey,Phys. Rev. Lett. 113,200401(2014)],其中导出了一个定理,该定理表明NCHVT与特定条件下异常弱值的观测不相容。在本文中,我们实现了这一建议,明确指出弱值和量子力学的上下文性质之间的严格联系。
The most well-known tool for studying contextuality in quantum computation is the n-qubit stabilizer state tableau representation. We provide an extension that describes not only the quantum state, but is also outcome deterministic. The extension enables a value assignment to exponentially many Pauli observables, yet remains quadratic in both memory and computational complexity. Furthermore, we show that the mechanisms employed for contextuality and measurement disturbance are wholly separate. The model will be useful for investigating the role of contextuality in $n$-qubit quantum computation…
The conspiracy of ontic states responding to measurements contextually to comply with noncontextual quantum mechanical probabilities is analyzed for general ontological models. A general physical picture of ontological space structure and how ontic states are disturbed by measurement contexts is presented. A common assumption in ontological models called lambda-sufficiency is analyzed and argued to be inconsistent with measurement contextuality for ontological models with certain symmetry in ontic space with respect to quantum states and measurements.
Despite the conceptual importance of contextuality in quantum mechanics, there is a hitherto limited number of applications requiring contextuality but not entanglement. Here, we show that for any quantum state and observables of sufficiently small dimensions producing contextuality, there exists a communication task with quantum advantage. Conversely, any quantum advantage in this task admits a proof of contextuality whenever an additional condition holds. We further show that given any set of observables allowing for quantum state-independent contextuality, there exists a class of communicat…
Beginning with the Bell theorem, cyclic systems of dichotomous random variables have been the object of many foundational findings in quantum mechanics. Here, we ask the question: if one chooses a cyclic system "at random" (uniformly within the hyperbox of all possible systems with given marginals), what are the odds that it will be contextual? We show that the odds of contextuality rapidly tend to zero as the size of the system increases. The result is based on the Contextuality-by-Default theory, in which we do not have to assume that the systems are subject to the no-disturbance/no-signalin…
Recently, an inequality satisfied by non-contextual hidden-variable models and violated by quantum mechanics for all states of a four-level system has been derived based on information-theoretic distance approach to non-classical correlations. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate violation of this inequality with single photons. Our experiment offers a method to study a distinction between quantum and classical correlations from an information-theoretic perspective.

Language is contextual as meanings of words are dependent on their contexts. Contextuality is, concomitantly, a well-defined concept in quantum mechanics where it is considered a major resource for quantum computations. We investigate whether natural language exhibits any of the quantum mechanics' contextual features. We show that meaning combinations in ambiguous phrases can be modelled in the sheaf-theoretic framework for quantum contextuality, where they can become possibilistically contextual. Using the framework of Contextuality-by-Default (CbD), we explore the probabilistic variants of t…
We consider the phenomenon of quantum mechanical contextuality, and specifically parity-based proofs thereof. Mermin's square and star are representative examples. Part of the information invoked in such contextuality proofs is the commutativity structure among the pertaining observables. We investigate to which extent this commutativity structure alone determines the viability of a parity-based contextuality proof. We establish a topological criterion for this, generalizing an earlier result by Arkhipov.
We construct a topological space to study contextuality in quantum mechanics. The resulting space is a classifying space in the sense of algebraic topology. Cohomological invariants of our space correspond to physical quantities relevant to the study of contextuality. Within this framework the Wigner function of a quantum state can be interpreted as a class in the twisted $K$-theory of the classifying space.
Results of measurements give legitimacy to a physical theory. What if acquiring these results in the first place necessitates what the same theory considers to be an interaction? In this note, we assume that theories account for interactions so that they are empirically traceable, and that observations necessarily go with such an interaction with the observed system. We investigate consequences of this assumption: The unfolding language game, inspired by "quantum logic," leads to a class of contextual and probabilistic theories. Contextuality becomes a means to render interactions, thus also m…
