We present a new theoretical approach to describe the quantum behavior of a macroscopic system interacting with an external irradiation field, close to the resonant condition. Here we consider the extremely underdamped regime for a system described by a double well potential. The theory includes both: transitions from one well to the other and relaxation processes. We simulate resonant phenomena in a rf-SQUID, whose parameters lie in the range typically used in the experiments. The dependence of the transition probability W on the external drive of the system $ϕ_x$ shows three resonance peaks. One peak is connected with the resonant tunneling and the two others with the resonant pumping. The relative position of the two peaks correlated to the resonant pumping depends on the pumping frequency $ν$ and on the system parameters. The preliminary measurements on our devices show a low dissipation level and assure that they are good candidates in order to realize new experiments on the resonant phenomena in the presence of an external microwave irradiation of proper frequency.
The macroscopic tunneling of an optomechanical membrane is considered. A cavity mode which couples quadratically to the membranes position can create highly tunable adiabatic double-well potentials, which together with the high Q-factors of such membranes render the observation of macroscopic tunneling possible. A suitable, pulsed measurement scheme using a linearly coupled mode of the cavity for the verification of the effect is studied.
We propose an experimental scheme to detect macroscopic Klein tunneling with spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We show that a nonlinear Dirac equation with tunable parameters can be realized with such BECs. %in a simple configuration to generate the artificial spin-orbit coupling. Through numerical calculations, we demonstrate that macroscopic Klein tunneling can be clearly detected under realistic conditions. Macroscopic quantum coherence in such relativistic tunneling is clarified and a BEC with a negative energy is shown to be able to transmit transparently through a wide…
Macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase is a fundamental phenomenon in the quantum dynamics of superconducting nanocircuits. The tunneling rate can be controlled in such circuits, where the potential landscape for the phase can be tuned with different external bias parameters. Precise theoretical knowledge of the macroscopic quantum tunneling rate is required in order to simulate and understand the experiments. We present a derivation, based on the instanton technique, of an analytical expression of the escape rate in general quartic and symmetric sextic potentials comprising two escape pat…
A new method is used to investigate the tunneling between two weakly-linked Bose-Einstein condensates confined in double-well potential traps. The nonlinear interaction between the atoms in each well contributes to a finite chemical potential, which, with consideration of periodic instantons, leads to a remarkably high tunneling frequency. This result can be used to interpret the newly found Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping (MQST) effect. Also a new kind of first-order crossover between different regions is predicted.
A Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction can be metastable if it is spatially confined and if the number of condensate bosons $N_0$ is below a certain critical value $N_{\rm c}$. By applying a variational method and the instanton techinique to the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional, we find analytically the frequency of the collective excitation and the rate of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT). We show that near the critical point the tunneling exponent vanishes according to $(1-N_0/N_c)^\frac{5}{4}$ and that MQT can be a dominant decay mechanism of the condensate for $N_0$ ve…
In this brief report, we propose a possible way, theoretically and experimentally, to generate a NOON state of the two degenerate ferromagnetic ground states of the Transverse Ising Model. In our scheme we employ the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) effect between the two degenerate ferromagnetic ground states to realize the NOON state. Our calculation about the MQT process is based on a higher-order degenerate perturbation method. After doing a transformation, the MQT process could also be treated as the hopping of individual virtual fermions in the spin chain, which will leads to an analy…
We report on measurements of flux and charge noise in an rf-SQUID flux qubit using macroscopic resonant tunneling (MRT). We measure rates of incoherent tunneling from the lowest energy state in the initial well to the ground and first excited states in the target well. The result of the measurement consists of two peaks. The first peak corresponds to tunneling to the ground state of the target well, and is dominated by flux noise. The second peak is due to tunneling to the excited state and is wider due to an intrawell relaxation process dominated by charge noise. We develop a theoretical mode…
We suggest a system in which the amplitude of macroscopic flux tunneling can be modulated via the Aharonov-Casher effect. The system is an rf-SQUID with the Josephson junction replaced by a Bloch transistor -- two junctions separated by a small superconducting island on which the charge can be induced by an external gate voltage. When the Josephson coupling energies of the junctions are equal and the induced charge is q=e, destructive interference between tunneling paths brings the flux tunneling rate to zero. The device may also be useful as a qubit for quantum computation.
We examine the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions with a d-wave order parameter. Using microscopic Hamiltonian and the functional integral method, we analytically obtain the MQT rate (the inverse lifetime of the metastable state) for the c-axis twist Josephson junctions. In the case of the zero twist angle, the system shows the super-Ohmic dissipation due to the presence of the nodal quasiparticle tunneling. Therefore, the MQT rate is strongly suppressed in compared with the finite twist angle cases.
We have investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in in-plane high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions and the influence of the nodal-quasiparticle and the zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT. We have shown that the presence of the ZES at the interface between the insulator and the superconductor leads to strong Ohmic quasiparticle dissipation. Therefore, the MQT rate is noticeably suppressed in comparison with the c-axis junctions in which ZES are completely absent.
We have theoretically investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) and the influence of nodal quasiparticles and zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT in s-wave/ d-wave hybrid Josephson junctions. In contrast to d-wave/d-wave junctions, the low-energy quasiparticle dissipation resulting from nodal quasiparticles and ZES is suppressed due to a quasiparticle-tunneling blockade effect in an isotropic s-wave superconductor. Therefore, the inherent dissipation in these junctions is found to be very weak. We have also investigated MQT in a realistic s-wave/d-wave (Nb/Au/YBCO) junction in which O…
Switching current distributions have for decades been an indispensable diagnostic tool for studying Josephson junctions. They have played a key role in testing the conjecture of a macroscopic quantum state in junctions at millikelvin temperatures. The conventional basis of the test has been the observation of temperature independence of SCD peak widths, and that led to affirmative conclusions about a crossover. A different criterion is proposed here - the distance of the SCD peak from the junction critical current - and its efficacy is demonstrated. This test has distinct advantages in terms o…
The tunneling probability for a system modelling macroscopic quantum tunneling is computed. We consider an open quantum system with one degree of freedom consisting of a particle trapped in a cubic potential interacting with an environment characterized by a dissipative and a diffusion parameter. A representation based on the energy eigenfunctions of the isolated system, i. e. the system uncoupled to the environment, is used to write the dynamical master equation for the reduced Wigner function of the open quantum system. This equation becomes very simple in that representation. The use of the…
We investigate the effects of high-Q_c resonant cavity on macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of fluxon both from a metastable state to continuum and from one degenerate ground-state of a double-well potential to the other. By using a set of two coupled perturbed sine-Gordon equations, we describe the tunneling processes in linear long Josephson junctions (LJJs) and find that MQT in the resonant cavity increases due to potential renomalization, induced by the interaction between the fluxon and cavity.Enhancement of the MQT rate in the weak-coupling regime is estimated by using the experimantal…
We study the effects of the environment at zero temperature on tunneling in an open system described by a static double-well potential. We show that the evolution of the system in an initial Schrodinger cat state, can be summarized in terms of three main physical phenomena, namely decoherence, quantum tunneling and noise-induced activation. Using large-scale numerical simulations, we obtain a detailed picture of the main stages of the evolution and of the relevant dynamical processes
The experimental observation of quantum phenomena in mechanical degrees of freedom is difficult, as the systems become linear towards low energies and the quantum limit, and thus reside in the correspondence limit. Here we investigate how to access quantum phenomena in flexural nanomechanical systems which are strongly deflected by a voltage. Near a metastable point, one can achieve a significant nonlinearity in the electromechanical potential at the scale of zero point energy. The system could then escape from the metastable state via macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT). We consider two model…
The macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in the current biased high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions and the effect of the zero energy bound states (ZES) on the MQT are theoretically investigated. We obtained the analytical formula of the MQT rate and showed that the presence of the ZES at the normal/superconductor interface leads to a strong Ohmic quasiparticle dissipation. Therefore, the MQT rate is noticeably inhibited in compared with the c-axis junctions in which the ZES are completely absent.
We investigate classical thermal activation (TA) and macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) for a Josephson junction coupled with an LC circuit theoretically. The TA and MQT escape rate are calculated analytically by taking into account the two-dimensional nature of the classical and quantum phase dynamics. We find that the MQT escape rate is largely suppressed by the coupling to the LC circuit. On the other hand, this coupling gives rise to slight reduction of the TA escape rate. These results are relevant for the interpretation of a recent experiment on the MQT and TA phenomena in grain boundar…
There is a wide recognition that Josephson-junction-like structures intrinsic to the layered cuprate high temperature superconductors offer an attractive stage for exploiting possible applications to new quantum technologies. On the other hand the low energy quasiparticle excitations characteristically present in these d-wave superconductors may easily destruct the coherence required. Here we demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of macroscopic quantum tunneling in the intrinsic Josephson junctions of a high temperature superconductor, and find it to be characterized by a high classic…
We present exact expressions for the quantum sloshing of Bose-Einstein condensates in a tilted two-well potential. Tunneling is suppressed by a small potential difference between wells, or tilt. However, tunneling resonances occur for critical values of the tilt when the barrier is high. At resonance, tunneling times on the order of 10-100 ms are possible. Furthermore, such tilted resonances lead to a dynamical scheme for creating few-body NOON-like macroscopic superposition states which are protected by the many body wavefunction against potential fluctuations.
The ground state of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive particle interaction is metastable. One of the decay mechanisms of the condensate is a collapse by macroscopic quantum tunneling, which can be described by the bounce trajectory as solution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in imaginary time. For condensates with an electromagnetically induced gravity-like interaction the bounce trajectory is computed with an extended variational approach using coupled Gaussian functions and simulated numerically exact within the mean-field approach on a space-time lattice. It is shown…
We theoretically study the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a hetero Josephson junction formed by a conventional single-gap superconductor and a multi-gap one such as ${MgB}_{2}$ and iron-based superconductors. In such a Josephson junction more than one phase differences are defined. We clarify the quantum dynamics of the phase differences and construct a theory for the MQT in the multi-gap Josephson junctions. The dynamics of the phase differences are strongly affected by the Josephson-Leggett mode, which is the out-of-phase oscillation mode of the phase differences. The escape rate is …
We investigate classical thermal activation (TA) and macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) for a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) Josephson junction coupled to an LC circuit theoretically. Due to the coupling between the junction and the LC circuit, the macroscopic phase dynamics can be described as the escape process of a fictitious particle with an anisotropic mass moving in a two-dimensional potential. We analytically calculate the escape rate including both the TA and MQT regime by taking into account the peculiar dynamical nature of the system. In addtion to large suppression of the MQT rate a…
Feynman one of the founders of Quantum Electronic Dynamics (QED) introduced in his diagrams virtual particles as intermediate states of an interaction process. Such virtual particles are not observable, however, from the theoretical point of view they represent necessary intermediate states between observable real states. Such virtual particles were introduced for describing the interaction process between an electron and a positron and for much more complicated interaction processes. Other candidates for virtual photons are evanescent modes known from optics. Evanescent modes have a purely im…
This is an analysis of some aspects of an old but still controversial topic, superluminal quantum tunneling. Some features of quantum tunneling described in literature, such as definition of the tunneling time and a frequency range of a signal, are discussed. The argument is presented that claim of superluminal signaling allegedly observed in frustrated internal reflection experiment was based on the wrong interpretation of the tunneling process. A thought experiment similar to that in the Tolman paradox is discussed. It shows that a new factor, attenuation, comes in the interplay between tunn…
A recent Letter [1] has proposed a device, consisting of an rf SQUID with the junction replaced by a double one, i.e. a Bloch transistor. For symmetric Josephson couplings, and for specific flux bias and gate voltage applied to the transistor's island, the tunneling of encircled flux between its two local potential minima is claimed to be suppressed completely due to destructive interference. This comment purports to show that this claim in general is not valid. Namely, the very Hamiltonian (1) in [1], from which the effect is derived, describes the circuit only under an additional condition. …
We study macroscopic quantum tunneling of the magnetic moment in a single-domain particle placed above the surface of a superconductor. Such a setup allows one to manipulate the height of the energy barrier, preserving the degeneracy of the ground state. The tunneling amplitude and the effect of the dissipation in the superconductor are computed.
Low-temperature characters of superconducting devices yield definite probes for different superconducting phenomena. We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a Josephson junction, composed of a single-gap superconductor and a two-gap superconductor. Since this junction has two kinds to the superconducting phase differences, calculating the MQT escape rate requires the analysis of quantum tunneling in a multi-dimensional configuration space. Our approach is the semi-classical approximation along a 1D curve in a 2D potential- energy landscape, connecting two adjacent potential (local)…
We study the stability of attractive atomic Bose-Einstein condensate and the macroscopic quantum many-body tunneling (MQT) in the anharmonic trap. We utilize correlated two-body basis function which keeps all possible two-body correlations. The anharmonic parameter ($λ$) is slowly tuned from harmonic to anharmonic. For each choice of $λ$ the many-body equation is solved adiabatically. The use of the van der Waals interaction gives realistic picture which substantially differs from the mean-field results. For weak anharmonicity, we observe that the attractive condensate gains stability with lar…
We study the quantum dynamics of a Bose Josephson junction(BJJ) made up of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. Apart from the usual ac Josephson oscillations, two different dynamical states of BJJ can be observed by tuning the inter-particle interaction strength, which are known as '$π$-oscillation' with relative phase $π$ between the condensates and 'macroscopic self-trapped' (MST) state with finite number imbalance. By choosing appropiate intial state we study above dynamical branches quantum mechanically and compare with classical dynamics. The stability region of the '$π$-oscillation' i…
We study macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in c-axis twist Josephson junctions made of high-T_c superconductors in order to clarify the influence of the anisotropic order parameter symmetry (OPS) on MQT. The dependence of the MQT rate on the twist angle $γ$ about the c-axis is calculated by using the functional integral and the bounce method. Due to the d-wave OPS, the $γ$ dependence of standard deviation of the switching current distribution and the crossover temperature from thermal activation to MQT are found to be given by $\cos2γ$ and $\sqrt{\cos2γ}$, respectively. We also show that a d…
A model of repeated quantum measurements of magnetic flux in superconducting circuits manifesting tunneling is discussed. The perturbation due to the previous measurements of magnetic flux is always present unless quantum nondemolition measurements are performed. By replacing the classical notion of noninvasivity with this condition, temporal Bell-like inequalities allows one to test the observability at the macroscopic level of the conflict between realism and quantum theory.
We derive the quantization of magnetic helicity in the solid-state and demonstrate tunable macroscopic quantum tunneling, coherence, and oscillation for a skyrmion spin texture stabilized in frustrated magnets. We also discuss the parameter space for the experimental realization of quantum effects. Typically, for a skyrmion of 5 nm radius, quantum tunneling between two macroscopic states with distinct helicities occurs with an inverse escape rate within seconds below 100 mK, and an energy splitting in the MHz regime. Feasibility of quantum tunneling of an ensemble of magnetic spins inspires ne…
This article presents a review on the theoretical and the experimental developments on macroscopic quantum tunneling and phase transition of the escape rate in spin systems. We present the basic ideas with simplified calculations so that it is readable to both specialists and nonspecialists in this area of research. A brief derivation of the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics in its original form using the orthonormal position and momentum basis is reviewed. For spin systems such as single molecule magnets, the formulation of path integral requires the use of non-orthonormal spin c…
We study macroscopic superpositions in the orbital rather than the spatial degrees of freedom, in a three-dimensional double-well system. We show that the ensuing dynamics of $N$ interacting excited ultracold bosons, which in general requires at least eight single-particle modes and ${N+7 \choose N}$ Fock vectors, is described by a surprisingly small set of many-body states. An initial state with half the atoms in each well, and purposely excited in one of them, gives rise to the tunneling of axisymmetric and transverse vortex structures. We show that transverse vortices tunnel orders of magni…
We have theoretically investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) and the influence of nodal quasiparticles and zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT in s-wave/d-wave hybrid Josephson junctions. In contrast to d-wave/d-wave junctions, the low-energy quasiparticle dissipation resulting from nodal quasiparticles and ZES is suppressed due to a quasiparticle-tunneling blockade effect in an isotropic s-wave superconductor. Therefore, the inherent dissipation in these junctions is found to be weak. This result suggests high potential of s-wave/d-wave hybrid junctions for applications in quantum…
We examine the quantum tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species trapped in a double well configuration. We discover the condition under which particles of different species can tunnel as pairs through the potential barrier between two wells in opposition directions. This novel form of tunneling is due to the interspecies interaction that eliminates the self- trapping effect. The correlated motion of tunneling atoms leads to the generation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopically coherent systems.
