We analyse the potential of the geometry of a slab in a planar cavity for the purpose of Casimir force experiments. The force and its dependence on temperature, material properties and finite slab thickness are investigated both analytically and numerically for slab and walls made of aluminium and teflon FEP respectively. We conclude that such a setup is ideal for measurements of the temperature dependence of the Casimir force. By numerical calculation it is shown that temperature effects are dramatically larger for dielectrics, suggesting that a dielectric such as teflon FEP whose properties vary little within a moderate temperature range, should be considered for experimental purposes. We finally discuss the subtle but fundamental matter of the various Green's two-point function approaches present in the literature and show how they are different formulations describing the same phenomenon.
We want to study the Casimir effect for a single conducting microscopic cylindrical cavity. The mathematical technique is based on the Green function of the geometry of the inside of the cavity, and the integral regularization is based on the plasma frequency cutoff for real conductors. Using the symmetric electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor, in terms of four potential, the total Casimir energy for the inside of the Cavity is calculated. Neglecting the contribution of the external (outside of the cavity) Casimir energy based on the reason recently presented in [1], the forces experienced by…
Boyer showed that a perfect electrically conducting slab repels a perfect magnetically conducting slab, in contrast to the attractive Casimir force between two identical perfect electrically/magnetically conducting slabs. To gain insight for the difference between the Boyer force and the Casimir force, we present the derivation of the Boyer force using the stress tensor method and then using the method of variation in dielectric. The Green dyadic, in terms of electric and magnetic Green's functions, is presented for an electric medium filling half of space and another magnetic medium filling a…
Based on the theory of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we generalize the expression of the Casimir force for nonreciprocal media. The essential ingredient of this result is the Green's tensor between two nonreciprocal semi-infinite slabs including a reflexion matrix with four coefficients that mixes optical polarizations. This Green's tensor does not obey Lorentz's reciprocity and thus violates time-reversal symmetry. The general result for the Casimir force is analyzed in the retarded and nonretarded limits, concentrating on the influences arising from reflections with or without change …
Critical and near critical phase behaviour and interplay between the thermodynamic Casimir and van der Waals forces in confined non-polar fluid medium with competing surface and substrate potentials
We discuss the possibility of verifying the equivalence principle for the zero-point energy of quantum electrodynamics, by evaluating the force, produced by vacuum fluctuations, acting on a rigid Casimir cavity in a weak gravitational field. The resulting force has opposite direction with respect to the gravitational acceleration; the order of magnitude for a multi-layer cavity configuration is derived and experimental feasibility is discussed, taking into account current technological resources.
In this paper we study an optomechnical system enclosed by an optical cavity with one mirror attached to a spring as a closed quantum system. We provide a different angle of studying the phenomenons related to the dynamical Casimir effect via Feynman diagram technique. Dressing effects of phonon, photon and coupling strength are discussed. The energy shift of ground state is obtained. The dynamical Casimir effect is modeled by the scattering processes converting phonons to photons and the corresponding scattering amplitudes are computed. The force-force correlation function of the radiation pr…
We extend our previous work on the electromagnetic Casimir-Lifshitz interaction between two bodies when one is contained within the other. We focus on the fluctuation-induced pressure acting on the cavity wall, which is assumed to be spherical. This pressure can be positive or negative depending on the response functions describing the bodies and the medium filling the cavity. However, we find that, under general hypotheses, the sign is independent of the geometry of the configuration. This result is based on the representation of the Casimir-Lifshitz energy in terms of transition operators. I…
We study the dynamical Casimir effect in an electromagnetic cavity containing a Kerr medium. We obtain approximate expressions for the time evolution operator as well as for the number operator in the Heisenberg representation. We have found that the generation of photons from quantum vacuum is strongly affected by the presence of the Kerr medium, sharing physical features with the case of two two-level atoms in a cavity with oscillating walls. The nonlinear medium produces a saturation effect in the photon generation which shows strong oscillations whose frequency increases with the intensity…
We study a quantum model of dynamical Casimir effect in an optical cavity enclosed by a freely moving mirror attached to a harmonic spring. The quantum fluctuations of the friction force exerted by the dynamical Casimir emission onto the moving mirror are investigated, as well as their consequences on the quantum state of the mirror oscillation. Observable signatures of the interplay of the nonlinear nature of the effective mirror-cavity coupling and of the discreteness of the emitted photons are pointed out, in particular as a fast diffusion of the mirror oscillation phase. These results are …
The Casimir-Lifshitz torque between two biaxially polarizable anisotropic planar slabs is shown to exhibit a non-trivial sign-reversal in its rotational sense. The critical distance $a_c$ between the slabs that marks this reversal is characterized by the frequency $ω_c\!\sim \!c/2a_c$ at which the in-planar polarizabilities along the two principal axes are equal. The two materials seek to align their principal axes of polarizabilities in one direction below $a_c$, while above $a_c$ their axes try to align rotated perpendicular relative to their previous minimum energy orientation. The sign-rev…
We theoretically propose and investigate a feasible experimental scheme for the realization of the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) in a hybrid optomechanical cavity with a moving end mirror containing an interacting cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We show that in the red-detuned regime of cavity optomechanics together with the weak optomechanical coupling limit by \textit{coherent} modulation of the \textit{s}-wave scattering frequency of the BEC and the mechanical spring coefficient of the mechanical oscillator (MO), the mechanical and atomic quantum vacuum fluctuations are parame…
We consider the out-of-thermal-equilibrium Casimir-Polder interaction between atoms of He$^*$, Na, Cs, and Rb and a cavity wall made of sapphire coated with a vanadium dioxide film which undergoes the dielectric-to-metal phase transition with increasing wall temperature. Numerical computations of the Casimir-Polder force and its gradient as the functions of atom-wall separation and wall temperature are made when the latter exceeds the temperature of the environment. The obtained results are compared with those in experiment on measuring the gradient of the Casimir-Polder force between $^{87}$R…
We study the entanglement dynamics between two cavities when one of them is harmonically shaken in the context of quantum information theory. We find four different regimes depending on the frequency of the motion and the spectrum of the moving cavity. If the moving cavity is three dimensional only two modes inside get coupled and the entanglement can either degrade asymptotically with time or oscillate depending on the driving. On the other hand, if the cavity has an equidistant spectrum the entanglement can either vanish asymptotically if it is driven with its fundamental frequency or have a…
