The nature of intrinsic/extrinsic character of angular momentum is defined in terms of the kind of the associated rotational energy of the light. The salient features of the spin energy of light and photon are highlighted. Spin angular momentum is intrinsic while orbital angular momentum possesses quasi-intrinsicness only if the vortex-like singularities are present. The claimed spin to orbital angular momentum conversion is interpreted in terms of spin redirection geometric phase. It is pointed out that this interpretation validates our angular momentum holonomy conjecture.
We formulate a non-relativistic Hamiltonian in order to describe how the rotational degrees of freedom of a dielectric sphere and quantized light fields are coupled. Such an interaction is shown to take a form of angular momentum coupling governed by the field angular momentum inside the dielectric. As a specific example, we show that the coupling due to a single whispering gallery mode can lead to precession dynamics and frequency shifts of light.
A general orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode selection principle is put forward involving the rotationally symmetric superposition of chiral states. This principle is not only capable of explaining the operation of spiral zone plate holograms and suggesting that naturally occurring rotationally symmetric patterns could be inadvertent sources of vortex beams, but more importantly, it enables the systematic and flexible generation of structured OAM waves in general. This is demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically in the context of electron vortex beams using rotationally symmetric bi…
We have obtained general expressions for the intensity of radiation and tangential force of a small polarizable particle in the process of translational-rotational motion in equilibrium radiation background (thermalized photon gas) of certain temperature at an arbitrary relative orientation of the linear and angular velocity vectors. It is shown that in cold vacuum background the translational velocity of particle is independent of time and the intensity of its spontaneous emission is determined by the angular velocity and imaginary part of the polarizability.
The rotational invariance under the usual physical angular momentum of the SUq(2) Hamiltonian for the description of rotational molecular spectra is explicitly proved and a connection of this Hamiltonian to the formalism of Amal'sky is provided. In addition, a new Hamiltonian for rotational spectra is introduced, based on the construction of irreducible tensor operators (ITOs) under SUq(2) and use of q-deformed tensor products and q-deformed Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. The rotational invariance of this SUq(2) ITO Hamiltonian under the usual physical angular momentum is explicitly proved and a…
Using no conventional measurements in position space, information extraction rates exceeding one bit per photon are achieved by employing high-dimensional correlated orbital angular momentum (OAM) states for object recognition. The correlations are shown to be insensitive to axial rotation of the target object: the information structure of an object's joint OAM coincidence spectrum is unchanged even when the object undergoes random rotations between each measurement. Additionally, OAM correlations alone are shown to be sufficient for full image reconstruction of complex, off-axis objects, and …
We study the quantum-classical correspondence in terms of coherent wave functions of a charged particle in two-dimensional central-scalar-potentials as well as the gauge field of a magnetic flux in the sense that the probability clouds of wave functions are well localized on classical orbits. For both closed and open classical orbits, the non-integer angular-momentum quantization with the level-space of angular momentum being greater or less than $\hbar$ is determined uniquely by the same rotational symmetry of classical orbits and probability clouds of coherent wave functions, which is not ne…
Since their discovery in 1927, the Heisenberg Inequalities have become an icon of quantum mechanics. Often inappropriately referred to as the Uncertainty Principle, these inequalities relating the standard deviations of the position and momentum observables to Planck's constant are one of the cornerstones of the quantum formalism even if the physical interpretation of quantum mechanics remains still open to controversy nowadays. The Heisenberg Inequalities governing translational motion are well understood. However, the corresponding inequalities pertaining to rotational motion have not been e…
A comprehensive theory of the Weyl-Wigner formalism for the canonical pair angle-angular momentum is presented. Special attention is paid to the problems linked to rotational periodicity and angular-momentum discreteness.

The rotational Doppler shift of a photon with orbital angular momentum $\pm \ell \hbar$ is shown to be an even multiple of the angular frequency $Ω$ of the reference frame rotation when photon is reflected from the phase-conjugating mirror. We consider the one-arm phase-conjugating interferometer which contains $N$ Dove prisms or other angular momentum altering elements rotating in opposite directions. When such interferometer is placed in the rotating vehicle the $δω=4 (N+1/2) \ell \cdot Ω$ rotational Doppler shift appears and rotation of the helical interference pattern with angular frequenc…
We discuss the rotational cooling of diatomic molecules in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultra-cold atoms by emission of phonons with orbital angular momentum. Despite the superfluidity of the BEC there is no frictionless rotation for typical molecules since the dominant cooling occurs via emission of particle-like phonons. Only for macro-dimers, whose size becomes comparable or larger than the condensate healing length, a Landau-like, critical angular momentum exists below which phonon emission is suppressed. We find that the rotational relaxation of typical molecules is in general fast…
The application of a matrix-based reconstruction protocol for obtaining Molecular Frame (MF) photoelectron angular distributions (MFPADs) from laboratory frame (LF) measurements (LFPADs) is explored. Similarly to other recent works on the topic of MF reconstruction, this protocol makes use of time-resolved LF measurements, in which a rotational wavepacket is prepared and probed via photoionization, followed by a numerical reconstruction routine; however, in contrast to other methodologies, the protocol developed herein does not require determination of photoionization matrix elements, and cons…
Physical mechanism for the geometric phase in terms of angular momentum exchange is elucidated. It is argued that the geometric phase arising out of the cyclic changes in the tranverse mode space of the Gaussian light beams is a manifestation of the cycles in the momentum space of the light. Nonconservation of angular momentum in the spontaneous parametric down-conversion for the classical light beams is proposed to be related with the geometric phase.
We demonstrate the preparation and coherent control of the angular momentum state of a two-ion crystal. The ions are prepared with an average angular momentum of $7780\hbar$ freely rotating at 100~kHz in a circularly symmetric potential, allowing us to address rotational sidebands. By coherently exciting these motional sidebands, we create superpositions of states separated by up to four angular momentum quanta. Ramsey experiments show the expected dephasing of the superposition which is dependent on the number of quanta separating the states. These results demonstrate coherent control of a co…
Recent reports on the intriguing features of vector vortex bearing beams are analyzed using geometric phases in optics. It is argued that the spin redirection phase induced circular birefringence is the origin of topological phase singularities arising in the inhomogeneous polarization patterns. A unified picture of recent results is presented based on this proposition. Angular momentum shift within the light beam (OAM) has exact equivalence with the angular momentum holonomy associated with the geometric phase consistent with our conjecture.
A simple, and elegant geometrical representation is developed to describe the concept of coherence and squeezing for angular momentum operators. Angular momentum squeezed states were obtained by applying Bogoliubov transformation on the angular momentum coherent states in Schwinger representation [Phys. Rev. {\bf{A 51}} (1995)]. We present the geometrical phase space description of angular momentum coherent and squeezed states and relate with the harmonic oscillator. The unique feature of our geometric representation is the portraying of the expectation values of the angular momentum component…
The interaction of a diatomic molecule with photons carrying well-defined angular momentum and parity is investigated to determine whether photon absorption can induce molecular rotational transitions between states having angular momentum $ΔJ >1$. A transformation from laboratory coordinates to coordinates with origin at the center-of-mass of the nuclei is used to obtain the interaction between the photons and the molecule's center-of-mass, electronic, and rotational degrees of freedom. For molecules making transitions between rotational levels, there is a small parameter, $ k a \ll 1 $, wher…
We theoretically explore the optical properties of a circular array of quantum dots. This structure, that we call a circular emitter array (CEA), can exchange optical angular momentum via the emission and absorption of circularly polarised light as well as light carrying orbital angular momentum. Analytical expressions are derived for both interband and intraband transition rates and selection rules are determined. Only the key properties of the quantum dots are considering when modelling the CEA. This extends the applicability of our model to CEAs composed of a variety of quantum dots. Finall…
We argue that certain materials exhibit asymmetry of their mechanical and conducting properties with respect to clockwise/counterclockwise rotation. We show that a cylinder made of a suitably chosen semiconductor coated in a metallic film and placed in the magnetic-field background can serve as a "rotational diode" which conducts electricity only at a specific range of angular frequencies. The critical angular frequency and the direction of rotation can be tuned with the magnetic field's strength. Mechanically, the rotational diode possesses different moments of inertia when rotated in clockwi…
We extend coupled-cluster theory performed on top of a Slater determinant breaking rotational symmetry to allow for the exact restoration of the angular momentum at any truncation order. The main objective relates to the description of near-degenerate finite quantum systems with an open-shell character. As such, the newly developed many-body formalism offers a wealth of potential applications and further extensions dedicated to the ab initio description of, e.g., doubly open-shell atomic nuclei and molecule dissociation. The formalism, which encompasses both single-reference coupled cluster th…
We suggest the existence of systems in which the statistics of a particle changes with the quantum level it occupies. The occupation numbers in thermal equilibrium depend on a continuous statistical parameter that interpolates between bosonic or fermionic and ghost-like statistical distributions. We call such particle states ``ninions'': they are different from anyons and can exist in 3+1 dimensions. We suggest that ninions can be associated with coherent angular momentum states. In the Euclidean imaginary-time formalism, the ninionic statistics can be implemented via the rotwisted boundary co…
A new explicitly correlated functional form for expanding the wave function of an N-particle system with arbitrary angular momentum and parity is presented. We develop the projection-based approach, numerically exploited in our previous work [J. Chem. Phys. 149, 184105 (2018)], to explicitly correlated Gausssians with one-axis shifted centers and derive the matrix elements for the Hamiltonian and the angular momentum operators by analytically solving the integral projection operator. Variational few-body calculations without assuming the Born-Oppenheimer approximation are presented for several…
Resonances are associated with the trapping of an intermolecular complex, and are characterized by a series of quantum numbers such as the total angular momentum and the parity, representative of a specific partial wave. Here we show how at cold temperatures the rotational quenching of HF(j=1,2) with H is strongly influenced by the presence of manifolds of resonances arising from the combination of a single value of the orbital angular momentum with different total angular momentum values. These resonances give rise up to a two-fold increase in the thermal rate coefficient at the low temperatu…
We study the magnetic relaxation rate Gamma of the single-molecule magnet Mn_{12}-tBuAc as a function of magnetic field component H_T transverse to the molecule's easy axis. When the spin is near a magnetic quantum tunneling resonance, we find that Gamma increases abruptly at certain values of H_T. These increases are observed just beyond values of H_T at which a geometric-phase interference effect suppresses tunneling between two excited energy levels. The effect is washed out by rotating H_T away from the spin's hard axis, thereby suppressing the interference effect. Detailed numerical calcu…
A quantum effect characterized by a dependence of the angular frequency associated with the confinement of a neutral particle to a quantum ring on the quantum numbers of the system and the Aharonov-Casher geometric phase is discussed. Then, it is shown that persistent spin currents can arise in a two-dimensional quantum ring in the presence of a Coulomb-type potential. A particular contribution to the persistent spin currents arises from the dependence of the angular frequency on the geometric quantum phase.
