A measurement technique is proposed which, in principle, allows one to observe the general space-time correlation properties of a quantized radiation field. Our method, called balanced homodyne correlation measurement, unifies the advantages of balanced homodyne detection with those of homodyne correlation measurements.
In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 220801 (2003)], V. Mkrtchian and co-workers calculated the radiation pressure force on a moving body, assuming the electromagnetic field to be at temperature $T,$ and the velocity to be much smaller than $c.$ They considered both dielectrics and conductors, and related the effect to Casimir dissipative forces. Here we claim that their approach may only apply in the Rayleigh-Ganz scattering regime, which corresponds to very small particles and/or electromagnetically rarefied media. Moreover, we argue that their interpretation in terms of the Casimir effe…
A full characterization of nonclassical space-time dependent correlations of radiation is formulated in terms of normally and time-ordered field correlation functions. It describes not only the properties of initially prepared multimode radiation fields, but also the dynamics of radiation sources. Some of these correlation effects occur in the resonance fluorescence of a single two-level atom.
An effective toy model for an ideal one-dimensional nonstationary cavity is taken to be the starting point to derive a fitting markovian master equation for the corresponding leaky cavity. In the regime where the generation of photons via the dynamical Casimir effect is bounded, the master equation thus constructed allows us to investigate the effects of decoherence on the average number of Casimir photons and their quantum fluctuations through the second-order correlation function.
Parties connected to independent sources through a network can generate correlations among themselves. Notably, the space of feasible correlations for a given network, depends on the physical nature of the sources and the measurements performed by the parties. In particular, quantum sources give access to nonlocal correlations that cannot be generated classically. In this paper, we derive a universal limit on correlations in networks in terms of their covariance matrix. We show that in a network satisfying a certain condition, the covariance matrix of any feasible correlation can be decomposed…
We analyze nonclassical correlations between outcomes of measurements conducted on two spatial radiation modes. These correlations cannot be simulated with statistical mixtures of coherent states or, more generally, with non-negative phase-space functions of quantum states and measurements. We argue that nonclassical correlations are naturally related to Bell nonlocality, the former being a more general class of quantum correlations. Indeed, it is known that local realistic as well as noncontextual models correspond to non-negative solutions to a system of linear equations for the joint probab…
We show that the state-independent violation of inequalities for noncontextual hidden variable theories introduced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 210401 (2008)] is universal, i.e., occurs for any quantum mechanical system in which noncontextuality is meaningful. We describe a method to obtain state-independent violations for any system of dimension d > 2. This universality proves that, according to quantum mechanics, there are no "classical" states.
We present a general method to detect nonclassical radiation fields with systems of on-off detectors. We especially study higher order correlations for the identification of nonclassical radiation. This allows us to directly characterize quantum correlations by the statistics measured with systems of on-off detectors. Additionally, we generalize our method to multiple detector systems for measurements of correlations between light fields. We also consider multi-mode radiation fields and isolate nonclassicality in terms of the space time correlations. Finally, we present results for the quantum…
We introduce a constructive procedure that maps all spatial correlations of a broad class of states into temporal correlations between general quantum measurements. This allows us to present temporal phenomena analogous to genuinely multipartite nonlocal phenomena, such as Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger correlations, which do not exist if only projective measurements on qubits are considered. The map is applied to certain lattice systems in order to replace one spatial dimension with a temporal one, without affecting measured correlations. We use this map to show how repeated application of a 1d-…
The existence of a non-thermodynamic arrow of time was demonstrated in a recent paper (Mod.Phys.Lett. A13, 1265 (1998)), in which a model of non-local Quantum Electrodynamics was formulated through the principle of gauge invariance. In this paper we show that the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation is capable of making every particle of the universe (except those which are not acted upon by an electromagnetic field) follow this arrow of time.
A general theory is presented for the spatial correlations in the intensity of the radiation emitted by a random medium in thermal equilibrium. We find that a non-zero correlation persists over distances large compared to the transverse coherence length of the thermal radiation. This long-range correlation vanishes in the limit of an ideal black body. We analyze two types of systems (a disordered waveguide and an optical cavity with chaotic scattering) where it should be observable.
We study the ground state quantum correlation of Ising model in a transverse field (ITF) by implementing the quantum renormalization group (QRG) theory. It is shown that various quantum correlation measures and the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality will highlight the critical point related with quantum phase transitions, and demonstrate nonanalytic phenomena and scaling behavior when the size of the systems becomes large. Our results also indicate a universal behavior of the critical exponent of ITF under QRG theory that the critical exponent of different measures is identical, even when t…
We explore the spontaneous generation and decay of quantum correlations between two identical atoms coupled to a common Markovian environment in the presence of electromagnetic field modes. For this purpose, we analyze the dynamics of quantum correlations by employing the concurrence, the trace quantum discord and the local quantum uncertainty, for collective Dicke states. It is shown that the collective damping and dipole-dipole interaction plays a key role in enhancing non-classical correlations during the process of intrinsic decoherence. The quantum correlations can be maintained over a lo…
We show that the quantum phase transition arising in a standard radiation-matter model (Dicke model) belongs to the same universality class as the infinitely-coordinated, transverse field XY model. The effective qubit-qubit exchange interaction is shown to be proportional to the square of the qubit-radiation coupling. A universal finite-size scaling is derived for the corresponding two-qubit entanglement (concurrence) and a size-consistent effective Hamiltonian is proposed for the qubit subsystem.
It is believed that no information can be stored in Hawking radiation, because correlations between quanta of different field modes vanish. However, such correlations have been defined only with reference to a single moment of time. In this article, we develop a method for the evaluation of {\em multi-time} correlations. We find that these correlations are highly non-trivial: for a scalar field in the Schwarzschild black hole, multi-time correlations have an explicit dependence on angular variables and on the scattering history of Hawking quanta. This result leads us to the conjecture that som…
In a recent paper [S.El Boustani, P.R.Buenzli, and Ph.A.Martin, Phys.Rev. E 73, 036113 (2006) cond-mat/0511537], about quantum charges in equilibrium with radiation, among other things the asymptotic form of the electric-field correlation has been obtained by a microscopic calculation. It has been found that this correlation has a long-range algebraic decay (except in the classical limit). The macroscopic approach, in the Course of Theoretical Physics of Landau and Lifshitz, gives no such long-range algebraic decay. In this Brief Report, we revisit and complete the macroscopic approach of Land…
We examine quantum statistics of optical photons emitted from atomic ensembles which are classically driven and simultaneously coupled to a two-level atom via microwave photon exchange. Quantum statistics and correlations are analyzed by calculating second order coherence degree, von Neumann entropy, spin squeezing for multi-particle entanglement, as well as genuine two and three-mode entanglement parameters for steady state and non-equilibrium situations. Coherent transfer of population between the radiation modes and quantum state mapping between the two-level atom and the optical modes are …
We explicitly construct an Archimedean order unit space whose state space is affinely isomorphic to the set of quantum commuting correlations. Our construction only requires fundamental techniques from the theory of order unit spaces and operator systems. Our main results are achieved by characterizing when a finite set of positive contractions in an Archimedean order unit space can be realized as a set of projections on a Hilbert space.
We investigate quantum correlations between successive steps of black hole evaporation and investigate whether they might resolve the black hole information paradox. 'Small' corrections in various models were shown to be unable to restore unitarity. We study a toy qubit model of evaporation that allows small quantum correlations between successive steps and reaffirm previous results. Then, we relax the 'smallness' condition and find a nontrivial upper and lower bound on the entanglement entropy change during the evaporation process. This gives a quantitative measure of the size of the correcti…
Short-range correlations in bosonic Helium clusters, composed of $^4$He atoms, are studied utilizing the generalized contact formalism. The emergence of universal $n$-body short range correlations is formulated and demonstrated numerically via Monte Carlo simulations. The values of the $n$-particle contacts are evaluated for $n\le5$. In the thermodynamic limit, the two-body contact is extracted from available experimental measurements of the static structure factor of liquid $^4$He at high momenta, and found in a good agreement with the value extracted from our calculations.
We identify universal spatial fluctuations in systems with non trivial spin dynamics. To this end we calculate by exact numerical diagonalization a variety of experimentally relevant correlations between spinor amplitudes, spin polarizations and spin currents both in the bulk and near the boundary of a confined two-dimensional clean electron gas in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and a single magnetic impurity. We support or claim of universality with the excellent agreement between the numerical results and system-independent spatial correlations of a random field defined on both the s…
Results of a previous article with the same title are retrieved by a different method. A one-component plasma is bounded by a plane surface. The plasma is fully coupled to the electromagnetic field, therefore the charge correlations are retarded. The quantum correlation function of the surface charge densities, at times different by $t$, at asymptotical large distances $R$, at inverse temperature $β$, decays as $-1/(8π^2βR^3)$, a surprisingly simple result: the decay is independent of Planck's constant $\hbar$ and of the time difference $t$. The present paper is based on the analysis of the co…
