This paper is devoted to systematic study of properties of the quantum entropy and of the Holevo capacity considered as a function of a set of quantum states.
The properties of restriction of the quantum entropy to arbitrary set of states are discussed. For some types of sets necessary and sufficient conditions of boundedness and of continuity of restriction of the quantum entropy as well as necessary and sufficient conditions of existence of the Gibbs state are obtained.
The Holevo capacity of an arbitrary set of states and its general properties as a function of a set are considered. The notion of the optimal average state of an arbitrary set of states with finite Holevo capacity is introduced. The condition of existence of optimal measure for a set of states is obtained.
The general results concerning the quantum entropy and the Holevo capacity are illustrated by considering the several examples of sets of states.
We consider information characteristics of single qudit state (spin j=9/2), such as von Neumann entropy, von Neumann mutual information. We review different mathematical properties of these information characteristics: subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions, Araki-Lieb inequality. The inequalities are entropic inequalities for composite systems (bipartite, tripartite), but they can be written for noncomposite systems. Using the density matrix, describing the noncomposite qudit system state in explicit matrix form we proved new entropic inequalities for single qudit state (spin j=9/2…
We study the dynamics of quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty for a hybrid qutrit-qubit system interacting with fluctuating quantum scalar field in the background of expanding de Sitter space. We firstly derive the master equation that the system evolution obeys. As evolution time goes by, for different initial states, entropic uncertainty develops to different fixed values for different parameter values, whereas entanglement always decays to zero, and there exist monotonous relations between entropic uncertainty, entanglement and various parameters for a fixed initial state, but mixed…
One of the major achievements of the recently emerged quantum information theory is the introduction and thorough investigation of the notion of quantum channel which is a basic building block of any data-transmitting or data-processing system. This development resulted in an elaborated structural theory and was accompanied by the discovery of a whole spectrum of entropic quantities, notably the channel capacities, characterizing information-processing performance of the channels. This paper gives a survey of the main properties of quantum channels and of their entropic characterization, with …
Uncertainty relations take a crucial and fundamental part in the frame of quantum theory, and are bringing on many marvelous applications in the emerging field of quantum information sciences. Especially, as entropy is imposed into the uncertainty principle, entropy-based uncertainty relations lead to a number of applications including quantum key distribution, entanglement witness, quantum steering, quantum metrology, and quantum teleportation. Herein, the history of the development of the uncertainty relations is discussed, especially focusing on the recent progress with regard to quantum-me…
In the course of the last decades entropic uncertainty relations have attracted much attention not only due to their fundamental role as manifestation of non-classicality of quantum mechanics, but also as major tools for applications of quantum information theory. Amongst the latter are protocols for the detection of quantum correlations or for the secure distribution of secret keys. In this work we show how to derive entropic uncertainty relations for sets of measurements whose effects form quantum designs. The key property of quantum designs is their indistinguishability from truly random qu…
One of most important issues in quantum information theory concerns transmission of information through noisy quantum channels. We discuss few channel characteristics expressed by means of generalized entropies. Such characteristics can often be dealt in line with more usual treatment based on the von Neumann entropies. For any channel, we show that the $q$-average output entropy of degree $q\geq1$ is bounded from above by the $q$-entropy of the input density matrix. Concavity properties of the $(q,s)$-entropy exchange are considered. Fano type quantum bounds on the $(q,s)$-entropy exchange ar…
The uncertainty principle is an inherent characteristic of quantum mechanics. This principle can be formulated in various form. Fundamentally, this principle can be expressed in terms of the standard deviation of the measured observables. In quantum information theory the preferred mathematical quantity to express the entropic uncertainty relation is the Shannon's entropy. In this work, we consider the generalized entropic uncertainty relation in which there is an additional particle as a quantum memory. Alice measures on her particle $A$ and Bob, with memory particle $B$, predicts the Alice's…
Bell's inequalities, in the form given by Cerf and Adami, are derived from the combination of the second law of thermodynamics and the Markov postulate. Violations of these inequalities are discussed in terms of the mixing characteristics of the density operators. A quantum mechanical bound for a system of three qubits, two of which are entangled, is found and is shown to lead to strong subadditivity in one case. Finally, in interpreting the results, the role the uncertainty relations play in the definition of entropy and the second law is discussed, demonstrating a link to Bell's inequalities…
We discuss the notion of hidden correlations in classical and quantum indivisible systems along with such characteristics of the correlations as the mutual information and conditional information corresponding to the entropic subadditivity condition and the entropic strong subadditivity condition. We present an analog of the Bayes formula for systems without subsystems, study entropic inequality for von Neumann entropy and Tsallis entropy of the single-qudit state, and discuss the inequalities for qubit and qutrit states as an example.
We study nanomachines whose relevant (effective) degrees of freedom f >> 1 but smaller than f of proteins. In these machines, both the entropic and the quantum effects over the whole system play the essential roles in producing nontrivial functions. We therefore call them entropic quantum machines (EQMs). We propose a systematic protocol for designing the EQMs, which enables a rough sketch, accurate design of equilibrium states, and accurate estimate of response time. As an illustration, we design a novel EQM, which shows two characteristic shapes. One can switch from one shape to the other by…
Information-based uncertainty measures like Shannon entropy, Onicescu energy and Fisher information (in position and momentum space) are employed to understand the effect of \emph{symmetric and asymmetric} confinement in a quantum harmonic oscillator. Also, the transformation of Hamiltonian into a dimensionless form gives an idea of the composite effect of force constant and confinement length ($x_c$). In symmetric case, a wide range of $x_{c}$ has been taken up, whereas asymmetric confinement is dealt by shifting the minimum of potential from origin keeping box length and boundary fixed. Eige…
A simple criterion for local equality between the constrained Holevo capacity and the quantum mutual information of a quantum channel is obtained. It implies that the set of all states for which this equality holds is determined by the kernel of the channel (as a linear map). Applications to Bosonic Gaussian channels are considered. It is shown that for a Gaussian channel having no completely depolarizing components the above characteristics may coincide only at non-Gaussian mixed states and a criterion of existence of such states is given. All the obtained results may be reformulated as condi…
Computing entanglement entropy and its cousins is often challenging even in the simplest continuum and lattice models, partly because such entropies depend nontrivially on all geometric characteristics of the entangling region. Quantum information measures between two or more regions are even more complicated, but contain more, and universal, information. In this paper, we focus on Rényi entropy and information of the order $n=2$. For a free field theory, we show that these quantities are mapped to the change of the thermodynamic free energy by introducing boundaries subject to Dirichlet and N…
A causal structure is a relationship between observed variables that in general restricts the possible correlations between them. This relationship can be mediated by unobserved systems, modelled by random variables in the classical case or joint quantum systems in the quantum case. One way to differentiate between the correlations realisable by two different causal structures is to use entropy vectors, i.e., vectors whose components correspond to the entropies of each subset of the observed variables. To date, the starting point for deriving entropic constraints within causal structures are t…
We investigate the universal inequalities relating the alpha-Renyi entropies of the marginals of a multi-partite quantum state. This is in analogy to the same question for the Shannon and von Neumann entropy (alpha=1) which are known to satisfy several non-trivial inequalities such as strong subadditivity. Somewhat surprisingly, we find for 0<alpha<1, that the only inequality is non-negativity: In other words, any collection of non-negative numbers assigned to the nonempty subsets of n parties can be arbitrarily well approximated by the alpha-entropies of the 2^n-1 marginals of a quantum state…
We develop an approximation approach to infinite dimensional quantum channels based on detailed investigation of the continuity properties of entropic characteristics of quantum channels and operations (trace-nonincreasing completely positive maps) as functions of a pair ``channel, input state''. The obtained results are then applied to the following problems: continuity of the $χ$-capacity as function of a channel; strong additivity of the $χ$-capacity for infinite dimensional channels; the analytical expression for the convex closure of the output entropy of arbitrary quantum channel.
The wave functions, the autocorrelation functions of which decay faster than $t^{-2}$, for both the one-dimensional free particle system and the repulsive-potential system are examined. It is then shown that such wave functions constitute a dense subset of $L^2 ({\bf R}^1)$, under several conditions that are particularly satisfied by the square barrier potential system. It implies that the faster than $t^{-2}$-decay character of the autocorrelation function persists against the perturbation of potential. It is also seen that the denseness of the above subset is guaranteed by that of the domain…
A method of proving local continuity of concave functions on convex set possessing the $μ$-compactness property is presented. This method is based on a special approximation of these functions. The class of $μ$-compact sets can be considered as a natural extension of the class of compact metrizable subsets of locally convex spaces, to which particular results well known for compact sets can be generalized. Applications of the obtained continuity conditions to analysis of different entropic characteristics of quantum systems and channels are considered.
Near-critical quantum circuits are ideal physical systems for asymptotically large-scale quantum computers, because their low energy collective excitations evolve reversibly, effectively isolated from the environment. The design of reversible computers is constrained by the laws governing entropy flow within the computer. In near-critical quantum circuits, entropy flows as a locally conserved quantum current, obeying circuit laws analogous to the electric circuit laws. The quantum entropy current is just the energy current divided by the temperature. A quantum circuit made from a near-critical…
We describe an universal method for quantitative continuity analysis of entropic characteristics of energy-constrained quantum systems and channels. It gives asymptotically tight continuity bounds for basic characteristics of quantum systems of wide class (including multi-mode quantum oscillators) and channels between such systems under the energy constraint. The main application of the proposed method is the advanced version of the uniform finite-dimensional approximation theorem for basic capacities of energy-constrained quantum channels.
We consider a class (convex set) of quantum states containing all finite rank states and infinite rank states with the sufficient rate of decreasing of eigenvalues (in particular, all Gaussian states). Quantum states from this class are characterized by the property (called the FA-property) that allows to obtain several results concerning finite-dimensional approximation of basic entropic and information characteristics of quantum systems and channels. We obtain a simple sufficient condition of the FA-property. We show that this property implies finiteness of the von Neumann entropy, but leave…
