We present experimental study of polarization quantum noise of laser radiation passed through optically think vapor of Rb87. We observe a step-like noise spectrum. We discuss various factor which may result in such noise spectrum and prevent observation of squeezing of quantum fluctuations predicted in Matsko et al. PRA 63, 043814 (2001).
We report an experimental realization of an atomic vapor quantum memory for the photonic po- larization qubit. The performance of the quantum memory for the polarization qubit, realized with electromagnetically-induced transparency in two spatially separated ensembles of warm Rubidium atoms in a single vapor cell, has been characterized with quantum process tomography. The process fidelity better than 0.91 for up to 16 μs of storage time has been achieved.
The influence of a repump laser on a nearly degenerate four-wave-mixing (NDFWM) spectrum was investigated. We found the amplitude and line shape of the NDFWM depended strongly on the detuning of the repump field. A five-peak structure was observed. And at some certain repump detuning a dip appeared at the central peak. A rough analysis was proposed to explain this effect.
We observed squeezed vacuum light at 795 nm in 87Rb vapor via resonant polarization self-rotation, and report noise sidebands suppression of ~1 dB below shot noise level spanning from acoustic (30 kHz) to MHz frequencies. This is the first demonstration of sub-MHz quadrature vacuum squeezing in atomic systems. The spectral range of observed squeezing matches well typical bandwidths of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances, making this simple technique for generation of optical fields with non-classical statistics at atomic transitions wavelengths attractive for EIT-based qu…
We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.
We have studied electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in diatomic cesium molecules in a vapor cell by using tunable diode lasers. We have observed a sub-natural Lambda-resonance in an absorption molecular band at different cesium vapor pressures. The width of the EIT resonance shows a linear dependence on cesium vapor pressure. Narrow Lambda-resonances in molecules can be used as frequency references for femtosecond laser frequency combs.
Ultralow-power diode-laser radiation is employed to induce photodesorption of cesium from a partially transparent thin-film cesium adsorbate on a solid surface. Using resonant Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that this photodesorption process enables an accurate local optical control of the density of dimer molecules in alkali-metal vapors.
We have studied relative-intensity fluctuations for a variable set of orthogonal elliptic polarization components of a linearly polarized laser beam traversing a resonant $^{87}$Rb vapor cell. Significant polarization squeezing at the threshold level (-3dB) required for the implementation of several continuous variables quantum protocols was observed. The extreme simplicity of the setup, based on standard polarization components, makes it particularly convenient for quantum information applications.
We present experimental and theoretical analysis of quantum fluctuation in a vacuum field in the presence of orthogonal linearly polarized pump field propagating through a Rb vapor cell. Previously reported theoretical and experimental studies provided somewhat contradictory conclusions regarding the possibility to observe the "squeezed vacuum" -- the reduction of vacuum fluctuations below standard quantum limit -- in this system. Here, using the D1 transitions of Rb in a cell without buffer as as an example, we demonstrate that vacuum squeezing is corrupted by incoherent processes (such as sp…
Generation of nonclassical light is an essential tool for quantum optics research and applications in quantum information technology. We present realization of the source of nonclassically correlated photon pairs based on the process of spontaneous four-wave-mixing in warm atomic vapor. Atoms are excited only by a single laser beam in retro-reflected configuration and narrowband frequency filtering is employed for selection of correlated photon pairs. Nonclassicality of generated light fields is proved by analysis of their statistical properties. Measured parameters of the presented source pro…
We report the fabrication of alkali-metal vapor cells using femtosecond laser machining. This laser-written vapor-cell (LWVC) technology allows arbitrarily-shaped 3D interior volumes and has potential for integration with photonic structures and optical components. We use non-evaporable getters both to dispense rubidium and to absorb buffer gas. This enables us to produce cells with sub-atmospheric buffer gas pressures without vacuum apparatus. We demonstrate sub-Doppler saturated absorption spectroscopy and single beam optical magnetometry with a single LWVC. The LWVC technology may find appl…
We demonstrate a single-photon Rydberg excitation spectroscopy of cesium (Cs) atoms in a room-temperature vapor cell. Cs atoms are excited directly from 6S1/2 ground state to nP3/2 (n = 70 - 100) Rydberg states with a 318.6 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser, and Rydberg excitation spectra are obtained by transmission enhancement of a probe beam resonant to Cs 6S1/2, F = 4 - 6P3/2, F' = 5 transition as partial population on F = 4 ground state are transferred to Rydberg state .Analysis reveals that the observed spectra are velocity-selective spectroscopy of Rydberg state, from which the amplitude and lin…
Ultraviolet (UV) diode lasers are widely used in many photonics applications. But their frequency stabilization schemes are not as mature as frequency-doubling lasers, mainly due to some limitations in the UV spectral region. Here we developed a high-performance UV frequency stabilization technique implemented directly on UV diode lasers by combining the dichroic atomic vapor laser lock and the resonant transfer cavity lock. As an example, we demonstrate a stable locking with frequency standard deviations of approximately 200 KHz and 300 KHz for 399nm and 370nm diode lasers in 20 minutes. We a…
We propose a novel approach to the important fundamental problem of detecting weak optical fields at the few photon level. The ability to detect with high efficiency (>99%), and to distinguish the number of photons in a given time interval is a very challenging technical problem with enormous potential pay-offs in quantum communications and information processing. Our proposal diverges from standard solid-state photo-detector technology by employing an atomic vapor as the active medium, prepared in a specific quantum state using laser radiation. The absorption of a photon will be aided by a dr…
We investigate the feasibility of UV lasing without inversion at a wavelength of $253.7$ nm utilizing interacting dark resonances in mercury vapor. Our theoretical analysis starts with radiation damped optical Bloch equations for all relevant 13 atomic levels. These master equations are generalized by considering technical phase noise of the driving lasers. From the Doppler broadened complex susceptibility we obtain the stationary output power from semiclassical laser theory. The finite overlap of the driving Gaussian laser beams defines an ellipsoidal inhomogeneous gain distribution. Therefor…
We report the generation of optical squeezed vacuum states by means of polarization self-rotation in rubidium vapor following a proposal by Matsko et al. [Phys. Rev. A 66, 043815 (2002)]. The experimental setup, involving in essence just a diode laser and a heated rubidium gas cell, is simple and easily scalable. A squeezing of 0.85+-0.05 dB was achieved.
The full control of single photons is important in quantum information and quantum networking. A convenient storage device for photons is the key to memory assisted quantum communication and computing. While even a simple optical fiber can act as a convenient and reliable storage device, its storage time is tightly fixed and cannot be adapted. Therefore, the photon storage should ideally be actively controllable by external means, such as magnetic or electric control fields. In order to multiplex several photons, an active routing would also be desirable. Here we show that single photons of a …
We propose and demonstrate a polarization-based truncated SU(1,1) interferometer that outputs the desired optical joint-quadrature of a two-mode squeezed vacuum field and allows its measurements using a single balanced homodyne detector. Using such setup we demonstrated up to $\approx$2 dB of quantum noise suppression below the shot-noise limit in intensity-difference and phase-sum joint quadratures, and confirmed entanglement between the two quantum fields. Our proposed technique results in a better balance between the two ports of the detector and, consequently, in better common noise suppre…
We report on the observation of enhanced four-wave mixing via crossover resonance in a Doppler broadened cesium vapor. Using a single laser frequency, a resonant parametric process in a double-$Λ$ level configuration is directly excited for a specific velocity class. We investigate this process in different saturation regimes and demonstrate the possibility of generating intensity correlation and anti-correlation between the probe and conjugate beams. A simple theoretical model is developed that accounts qualitatively well to the observed results.
An optical quantum memory is a stationary device that is capable of storing and recreating photonic qubits with a higher fidelity than any classical device. Thus far, these two requirements have been fulfilled in systems based on cold atoms and cryogenically cooled crystals. Here, we report a room-temperature quantum memory capable of storing arbitrary polarization qubits with a signal-to-background ratio higher than 1 and an average fidelity clearly surpassing the classical limit for weak laser pulses containing 1.6 photons on average. Our results prove that a common vapor cell can reach the …
We present experimental evidence of a fourth order process in electric field in supercontinuum generation. We also show laser induced polarization preference in the supercontinuum generating media. These results have become possible through the choice of isotropic and anisotropic samples interacting with ultrashort laser pulses of changing ellipticity. Laser polarization emerges as an important control parameter for the highly nonlinear phenomenon of supercontinuum generation.
We demonstrate matterwave interference in a warm vapor of rubidium atoms. Established approaches to light pulse atom interferometry rely on laser cooling to concentrate a large ensemble of atoms into a velocity class resonant with the atom optical light pulse. In our experiment, we show that clear interference signals may be obtained without laser cooling. This effect relies on the Doppler selectivity of the atom interferometer resonance. This interferometer may be configured to measure accelerations, and we demonstrate that multiple interferometers may be operated simultaneously by addressing…
Inspired by laser operation, we address the question of whether stimulated emission into polarization entangled modes can be achieved. We describe a state produced by stimulated emission of the singlet Bell state and propose a setup for creating it. As a first important step towards an entangled-photon laser we demonstrate experimentally interference-enhanced polarization entanglement.
We demonstrate backward-directed continuous-wave (cw) emission at 2.21 μm generated on the 4P3/2-4S1/2 population-inverted transition in Na vapors two-photon excited with resonant laser light at 589 and 569 nm. Our study of power and atom-number-density threshold characteristics shows that lasing occurs at sub-10 mW total power of the applied laser light. The observed 6 mrad divergence is defined mainly by the aspect ratio of the gain region. We find that mirrorless lasing at 2.21 μm is magnetic field and polarization dependent that may be useful for remote magnetometry. The presented results …
We demonstrate the use of electrically contacted vapor cells to switch the transmission of a probe laser. The excitation scheme makes use of electromagnetically induced transparency involving a Rydberg state. The cell fabrication technique involves thinfilm based electric feedthroughs which are well suited for scaling this concept to many addressable pixels like in flat panel displays.
We use weak-value amplification to enhance the polarization-sensitive fast-light effect from induced Raman absorption in hot rubidium vapor. We experimentally demonstrate that projecting the output signal into an appropriate polarization state enables a pulse advancement of 4.2 μs, which is 15 times larger than that naturally caused by dispersion. More significantly, we show that combining weak-value amplification with the dispersive response of an atomic system provides a clear advantage in terms of the maximum pulse advancement achievable for a given value of loss. This technique has potenti…
A comprehensive study of three-photon electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) on the rubidium cascade $5S_{1/2} \rightarrow 5P_{3/2}$ (laser wavelength 780~nm), $5P_{3/2} \rightarrow 5D_{5/2}$ (776~nm), and $5D_{5/2}\rightarrow 28F_{7/2}$ (1260~nm) is performed. The 780-nm probe and 776-nm dressing beams are counter-aligned through a Rb room-temperature vapor cell, and the 1260-nm coupler beam is co- or counter-aligned with the probe beam. Several cases of EIT and EIA, measured over a range of detunings of the 776-nm beam, are studied. The observed phenomena are mod…
We report on the observation of a Zeeman shift (order of 100 MHz) of the Doppler-broadened D2 transition of both 85Rb and 87Rb isotopes via transmission through a tapered optical nanofiber in the presence of a DC magnetic field. Linearly-polarized light propagating in the nanofiber is analyzed as a superposition of two orthogonally circularly-polarized orientations, σ+ and σ-. In the absence of the magnetic field, the absorption of these polarizations by the atomic vapor, via the evanescent field at the waist of the nanofiber, is degenerate. When a weak magnetic field is applied parallel to th…
It is clearly important to pursue atomic standards for quantities like electromagnetic fields, time, length and gravity. We have recently shown, using Rydberg states, that Rb atoms in a vapor cell can serve as a practical, compact standard for microwave electric field strength. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, that Rb atoms excited in a vapor cell can also be used for vector microwave electrometry by using Rydberg atom electromagnetically induced transparency. We describe the measurements necessary to obtain an arbitrary microwave electric field polarization at a resolution of $0.5^\c…
We demonstrate a simple technique for microwave field imaging using alkali atoms in a vapor cell. The microwave field to be measured drives Rabi oscillations on atomic hyperfine transitions, which are detected in a spatially resolved way using a laser beam and a camera. Our vapor cell geometry enables single-shot recording of two-dimensional microwave field images with 350 μm spatial resolution. Using microfabricated vapor cell arrays, a resolution of a few micrometers seems feasible. All vector components of the microwave magnetic field can be imaged. Our apparatus is simple and compact and d…
We investigate the effects of the electron-hole spin dynamics on the polarization fluctuations in the light emitted from a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). The Langevin equations are derived based on a rate equation model including birefringence, dichroism, and two carrier density pools seperately coupled to right and left circular polarization. The results show that the carrier dynamics phase lock the polarization fluctuations to the laser mode. This is clearly seen in the difference between fluctuations in ellipticity and fluctuations in polarization direction. Seperate measur…
