A geometric potential $V_C$ depending on the mean and Gaussian curvatures of a surface $Σ$ arises when confining a particle initially in a three-dimensional space $Ω$ onto $Σ$ when the particle Hamiltonian $H_Ω$ is taken proportional to the Laplacian $L$ on $Ω$. In this work rather than assume $H_Ω\propto L$, momenta $P_η$ Hermitian over $Ω$ are constructed and used to derive an alternate Hamiltonian $H_η$. The procedure leading to $V_C$, when performed with $H_η$, is shown to yield $V_C = 0$. To obtain a measure of the difference between the two approaches, numerical results are presented for a toroidal model.
Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are relevant to describe the features of a broad class of physical phenomena, ranging from photonics and atomic and molecular systems to nuclear physics and mesoscopic electronic systems. An important question relies on the understanding of the influence of curved background on the static and dynamical properties of non-Hermitian systems. In this work, we study the interplay of geometry and non-Hermitian dynamics by unveiling the existence of curvature-dependent non-Hermitian phase transitions. We investigate a prototypical model of Dirac fermions on a sphere with an…
The surface Hamiltonian for a spin zero particle that is pinned to a surface by letting the thickness of a layer surrounding the surface go to zero -- assuming a strong normal force -- is constructed. The new approach we follow to achieve this is to start with an expression for the 3D momentum operators whose components along the surface and the normal to the surface are separately Hermitian. The normal part of the kinetic energy operator is a Hermitian operator in this case. When this operator is dropped and the thickness of the layer is set to zero, one automatically gets the Hermitian surfa…
A new Bateman-Hillion solution to the Dirac equation for a relativistic Gaussian electron beam taking explicit account of the $4$-position of the beam waist is presented. This solution has a pure Gaussian form in the paraxial limit but beyond it contains higher order Laguerre-Gaussian components attributable to the tighter focusing. One implication of the mixed mode nature of strongly diffracting beams is that the expectation values for spin and orbital angular momenta are fractional and are interrelated to each other by \textit{intrinsic spin-orbit coupling}. Our results for these properties …
The Wigner-Weyl transform and phase space formulation of a density matrix approach are applied to a non-Hermitian model which is quadratic in positions and momenta. We show that in the presence of a quantum environment or reservoir, mean lifetime and decay constants of quantum systems do not necessarily take arbitrary values, but could become functions of energy eigenvalues and have a discrete spectrum. It is demonstrated also that a constraint upon mean lifetime and energy appears, which is used to derive the resonance conditions at which long-lived states occur. The latter indicate that quan…
Dirac particle represents a fundamental constituent of our nature. Simulation of Dirac particle dynamics by a controllable quantum system using quantum walks will allow us to investigate the non-classical nature of dynamics in its discrete form. In this work, starting from a modified version of one-spatial dimensional general inhomogeneous split-step discrete quantum walk we derive an effective Hamiltonian which mimics a single massive Dirac particle dynamics in curved $(1+1)$ space-time dimension coupled to $U(1)$ gauge potential---which is a forward step towards the simulation of the unifica…
