We present a detailed study of the spatial self-organization of laser-driven atoms in an optical cavity, an effect predicted on the basis of numerical simulations [P. Domokos and H. Ritsch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 253003 (2002)] and observed experimentally [A. T. Black et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 203001 (2003)]. Above a threshold in the driving laser intensity, from a uniform distribution the atoms evolve into one of two stable patterns that produce superradiant scattering into the cavity. We derive analytic formulas for the threshold and critical exponent of this phase transition from a mean-field approach. Numerical simulations of the microscopic dynamics reveal that, on laboratory timescale, a hysteresis masks the mean-field behaviour. Simple physical arguments explain this phenomenon and provide analytical expressions for the observable threshold. Above a certain density of the atoms a limited number of ``defects'' appear in the organized phase, and influence the statistical properties of the system. The scaling of the cavity cooling mechanism and the phase space density with the atom number is also studied.
We study enhanced sensing of optomechanically induced nonlinearity (OMIN) in a cavity-waveguide coupled system. The Hamiltonian of the system is anti-PT symmetric with the two involved cavities being dissipatively coupled via the waveguide. When a weak waveguide-mediated coherent coupling is introduced, the anti-PT symmetry may break down. However, we find a strong bistable response of the cavity intensity to the OMIN near the cavity resonance, benefiting from linewidth suppression caused by the vacuum induced coherence. The joint effect of optical bistability and the linewidth suppression is …
We address an experimental scheme to analyze the optical bistability and the entanglement of two movable mirrors coupled to a two-mode laser inside a doubly resonant cavity. With this aim we investigate the master equations of the atom-cavity subsystem in conjunction with the quantum Langevin equations that describe the interaction of the mirror cavity. The parametric amplification-type coupling induced by the two-photon coherence on the optical bistability of the intracavity mean photon numbers is found and investigated. Under this condition, the optical intensities exhibit bistability for al…
The optical bistability (OB) in a two-mode optomechanical system with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is studied. By investigating the behavior of steady state solutions, we show that how OB develops in the system for a certain range of cavity-pump detunings and pump amplitudes. We then investigate the effects of the decay rate of the cavity photons and coupling strength between the cavity and the BEC as well as the pump-atom detuning on the optical behaviour of the system. We find that one can control the OB threshold and width of the bistability curve via adjusting properly the decay rate, …
We demonstrate lasing into counter-propagating modes of a ring cavity using a gas of cold atoms as a gain medium. The laser operates under the usual conditions of magneto-optical trapping with no additional fields. We characterize the threshold behavior of the laser and measure the second-order optical coherence. The laser emission exhibits directional bistability, switching randomly between clockwise and counter-clockwise modes, and a tuneable nonreciprocity is observed as the atoms are displaced along the cavity axis.
We develop a theory for the magnon Kerr effect in a cavity magnonics system, consisting of magnons in a small yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere strongly coupled to cavity photons, and use it to study the bistability in this hybrid system. To have a complete picture of the bistability phenomenon, we analyze two different cases in driving the cavity magnonics system, i.e., directly pumping the YIG sphere and the cavity, respectively. In both cases, the magnon frequency shifts due to the Kerr effect exhibit a similar bistable behavior but the corresponding critical powers are different. Moreover, …
We report the first observation of the magnon-polariton bistability in a cavity magnonics system consisting of cavity photons strongly interacting with the magnons in a small yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere. The bistable behaviors are emerged as sharp frequency switchings of the cavity magnon-polaritons (CMPs) and related to the transition between states with large and small number of polaritons. In our experiment, we align, respectively, the [100] and [110] crystallographic axes of the YIG sphere parallel to the static magnetic field and find very different bistable behaviors (e.g., clockwis…
Bistable mechanical vibration is observed in a cavity magnomechanical system, which consists of a microwave cavity mode, a magnon mode, and a mechanical vibration mode of a ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sphere. The bistability manifests itself in both the mechanical frequency and linewidth under a strong microwave drive field, which simultaneously activates three different kinds of nonlinearities, namely, magnetostriction, magnon self-Kerr, and magnon-phonon cross-Kerr nonlinearities. The magnon-phonon cross-Kerr nonlinearity is first predicted and measured in magnomechanics. The sys…
We observed optical bistability as well as oscillations in the upper bistable branch when cold ytterbium atoms are dispersively coupled to a high finesse optical cavity. Comparable previous observations were explained by atomic density oscillations in case of a Bose-Einstein-Condensate or optical pumping in case of a cold cloud of cesium. Both explanations do not apply in our case of thermal atoms with only a single ground state. We propose a simple two-level model including saturation to describe our experimental results. This paper introduces the experimental setup, derives the mentioned mod…

We study optical bistable behavior of a Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) atomic medium in a unidirectional optical ring-cavity. Due to strong van del Waal (vdW) interactions between the atoms, both optical nonlinear dispersion and nonlinear absorption coefficients are enhanced substantially. Under the condition of two-photon on resonance, we show that probe one-photon detuning can change the phase of the third order nonlinearity coefficient, which tunes the character of the optical bistability within different ratios of dispersive and absorptive types. This enables the si…
We theoretically investigate the optical bistability phenomenon in an ensemble of $N$ non-interacting three-level atoms trapped inside an optical cavity. The atoms are in a $Λ$-level configuration, where one atomic transition is coupled by a cavity mode, while the other one is coupled by a classical field. In addition, we consider a pumping field driving the cavity mode. With this system, we are able to observe new kinds of hysteresis, while scanning either the frequency of the pumping field or the Rabi frequency (intensity) of the control field. We show that they can be highly controllable vi…
We propose a scheme for controlling nonlinear coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in a three-level Λ-type atom-cavity system. Generally, the normally nonlinear CPA and the bistable CPA can be attained at the different frequencies of an input probe field. With a coherent control field coupling one of the ground states and the excited state of the atoms, two types of CPA can be attained at the same frequency. Besides, for the bistable CPA, the highest output-input ratio of the high stable state and the low stable state is approximately 1, and the bistable region is controllable with the control fi…
We highlight the importance of quantum fluctuations in organizing a dissipative quantum phase transition for the driven Jaynes-Cummings interaction with variable qubit-cavity detuning. The system response presents a substantial difference from the predictions of the semiclassical theory, the extent of which is revealed in the properties of quantum bistability, and visualized with the help of quasi-distribution functions for the cavity field, subject to an appropriate scale parameter. States anticipated by the neoclassical theory of radiation coexist in the quantum picture, following the occurr…
The photon blockade breakdown in a continuously driven cavity QED system has been proposed as a prime example for a first-order driven-dissipative quantum phase transition. But the predicted scaling from a microscopic system - dominated by quantum fluctuations - to a macroscopic one - characterized by stable phases - and the associated exponents and phase diagram have not been observed so far. In this work we couple a single transmon qubit with a fixed coupling strength $g$ to an in-situ bandwidth $κ$ tuneable superconducting cavity to controllably approach this thermodynamic limit. Even thoug…
