Recently Gupta and Panigrahi have shown how to deterministically identify an unknown Bell state. The present paper extends their result to deterministic cloning.
We investigate the connection between quantum no-cloning theorem and Bell's theorem. Designing some Bell's inequalities, we show that quantum no-cloning theorem can always be certified by Bell's theorem, and this fact in turn reflects that our physical world is essentially nonlocal.
The necessary and sufficient amount of entanglement required for cloning of orthogonal Bell states by local operation and classical communication is derived, and using this result, we provide here some additional examples of reversible, as well as irreversible states.
We analyze various eavesdropping strategies on a quantum cryptographic channel. We present the optimal strategy for an eavesdropper restricted to a two-dimensional probe, interacting on-line with each transmitted signal. The link between safety of the transmission and the violation of Bell's inequality is discussed. We also use a quantum copying machine for eavesdropping and for broadcasting quantum information.
We analyze a possibility of using the two qubit output state from Buzek-Hillery quantum copying machine (not necessarily universal quantum cloning machine) as a teleportation channel. We show that there is a range of values of the machine parameter $ξ$ for which the two qubit output state is entangled and violates Bell-CHSH inequality and for a different range it remains entangled but does not violate Bell-CHSH inequality. Further we observe that for certain values of the machine parameter the two-qubit mixed state can be used as a teleportation channel. The use of the output state from the Bu…
We make use of local operations with two ancilla bits to deterministically distinguish all the four Bell states, without affecting the quantum channel containing these Bell states.
It is shown that the restrictions of what can be inferred from classically-recorded observational outcomes that are imposed by the no-cloning theorem, the Kochen-Specker theorem and Bell's theorem also follow from restrictions on inferences from observations formulated within classical automata theory. Similarities between the assumptions underlying classical automata theory and those underlying universally-unitary quantum theory are discussed.
A simple protocol for complete and deterministic Bell state measurement is proposed. It consists of measurements of nonlocal spin product operators with the help of shared entanglement as an ancillary resource. The protocol realizes not only nonlocal Bell state measurement between a pair of distant qubits but also a complete Bell filter that transmits either one of the Bell states indicated by the measurement outcome. These schemes will be useful in quantum technologies where nonlocal Bell state measurement is indispensable.
Following ideas given by John Bell in a paper entitled \textit{Beables for quantum field theory}, we show that it is possible to obtain a realistic and deterministic interpretation of any quantum field-theoretic model involving Fermi fields.
We propose the scheme implementing partial deterministic non-demolition Bell measurement. When it is used in quantum teleportation the information about an unknown input state is optimally distributed among three outgoing qubits. The optimality means that the output fidelities saturate the asymmetric cloning inequality. The flow of information among the qubits is controlled by the preparation of a pair of ancillary qubits used in the Bell measurement. It is also demonstrated that the measurement is optimal two-qubit operation in the sense of the trade-off between the state disturbance and the …
A deterministic teleportation scheme for unknown atomic states is proposed in cavity QED. The Bell state measurement is not needed in the teleportation process, and the success probability can reach 1.0. In addition, the current scheme is insensitive to the cavity decay and thermal field.
A complete and deterministic Bell state measurement was realized by a simple linear optics experimental scheme which adopts 2-photon polarization-momentum hyperentanglement. The scheme, which is based on the discrimination among the single photon Bell states of the hyperentangled state, requires the adoption of standard single photon detectors. The four polarization Bell states have been measured with average fidelity $F=0.889\pm0.010$ by using the linear momentum degree of freedom as the ancilla. The feasibility of the scheme has been characterized as a function of the purity of momentum enta…
Recently, a kind of deterministic all-versus-nothing proof of Bell nonlocality induced from the qubit non-stabilizer state was proposed, breaking the tradition that deterministic all-versus-nothing proofs are always derived from stabilizer states. A trivial generalization to the qudit (d is even) version is by using a special basis map, but such a proof can still be reduced to the qubit version. So far, whether high dimensional non-stabilizer states can induce nontrivial deterministic all-versus-nothing proofs of Bell nonlocality remains unknown. Here we present an example induced from a speci…
Although the strengths of optical non-linearities available experimentally have been rapidly increasing in recent years, significant challenges remain to using such non-linearities to produce useful quantum devices such as efficient optical Bell state analysers or universal quantum optical gates. Here we describe a new approach that avoids the current limitations by combining strong non-linearities with active Gaussian operations in efficient protocols for Bell state analysers and Controlled-Sign gates.
We show that in a cloning process, whether deterministic inexact or probabilistic exact, one can take an arbitrary blank state while still using a fixed cloning machine.
Entanglement purification is a very important element for long-distance quantum communication. Different from all the existing entanglement purification protocols (EPPs) in which two parties can only obtain some quantum systems in a mixed entangled state with a higher fidelity probabilistically by consuming quantum resources exponentially, here we present a deterministic EPP with hyperentanglement. Using this protocl, the two parties can, in principle, obtain deterministically maximally entangled pure states in polarization without destroying any less-entangled photon pair, which will improve …
The original versions (1 and 2) of this paper paper contain a fatal error. All my attempts to patch the error have failed. As a service to the community I explain the error in some detail.
First, I show explicitly a scheme to {\it faithfully} and {\it deterministically} teleport an arbitrary 2-qubit state from Alice to Bob. In this scheme two same Bell states are sufficient for use. Bob can recover the 2-qubit state by performing at most 4 single-qubit unitary operations conditioned on Alice's 4-bit classical public message corresponding to her two Bell-state measurement outcomes. Then I generalize the 2-qubit teleportation scheme to an aribitrary $N(N\ge 3)$-qubit state teleportation case by using $N$ same Bell states. In the generalized scheme, Alice only needs to identify $N$…
We develop a scheme for generating a universal qubit cluster state using probabilistic Bell measurements without the need for feed-forward or long-time quantum memories. Borrowing ideas from percolation theory we numerically show that using unambiguous Bell measurements that succeed with 75% success probability, one could build a cluster state with an underlying pyrochlore geometry such that the probability of having a spanning cluster in a chosen direction approaches unity in the limit of an infinite lattice size. The initial resources required for the generation of a universal state in our p…
We propose a novel double-entanglement-based quantum cryptography protocol that is both efficient and deterministic. The proposal uses photon pairs with entanglement both in polarization and in time degrees of freedom; each measurement in which both of the two communicating parties register a photon can establish one and only one perfect correlation and thus deterministically create a key bit. Eavesdropping can be detected by violation of local realism. A variation of the protocol shows a higher security, similarly to the six-state protocol, under individual attacks. Our scheme allows a robust…
We present a method for the deterministic generation of all the electronic Bell states of two trapped ions. It involves the combination of a purely dispersive with a resonant laser excitation of vibronic transitions of the ions. In contrast to other methods presented up to now, our proposal does not require differential laser addressing of the individual ions and may be easily implemented with present available techniques. It is further shown that this excitation scheme is highly adequate for the complete determination of the motional state of the ions.
Quantum states obey an asymptotic no-cloning theorem, stating that no deterministic machine can reliably replicate generic sequences of identically prepared pure states. In stark contrast, we show that generic sequences of unitary gates can be replicated deterministically at nearly quadratic rates, with an error vanishing on most inputs except for an exponentially small fraction. The result is not in contradiction with the no-cloning theorem, since the impossibility of deterministically transforming pure states into unitary gates prevents the application of the gate replication protocol to sta…
Any quantum information system operates with entanglement as a resource, which should be deterministically generated by a joint measurement known as complete Bell state measurement (BSM). The determinism arises from a quantum nondemolition measurement of two coupled qubits with the help of readout ancilla, which inevitably requires extra physical qubits. We here demonstrate a deterministic and complete BSM with only a nitrogen atom in a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond as a quantum memory without reliance on any carbon isotopes by exploiting electron nitrogen (14N) double qutrits at a z…
We propose a Bell measurement scheme by employing a logical qubit in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement with an arbitrary number of photons. Remarkably, the success probability of the Bell measurement as well as teleportation of the GHZ entanglement can be made arbitrarily high using only linear optics elements and photon on-off measurements as the number of photons increases. Our scheme outperforms previous proposals using single photon qubits when comparing the success probabilities in terms of the average photon usages. It has another important advantage for experimental feasibi…
Hyperentangled Bell states analysis (HBSA) is an essential building block for certain hyper-parallel quantum information processing. We propose a complete and deterministic HBSA scheme encoded in spatial and polarization degrees of freedom (DOFs) of two-photon system assisted by a fixed frequency-based entanglement and a time interval DOF. The parity information the spatial-based and polarization-based hyper-entanglement can be distinguished by the distinct time intervals of the photon pairs, and the phase information can be distinguished by the detection signature. Compared with previous sche…
Deterministic extraction of Bell pairs from a finite number of partially entangled pairs is discussed. We derive the maximum number of Bell pairs that can be obtained with probability 1 by local operations and classical communication. It is proved that the optimal deterministic concentration needs only a two-pair collective manipulation in each step, and that a collective manipulation of all entangled pairs is not necessary. Finally, this scheme reveals an entanglement measure for the deterministic concentration.
This paper furthers the long historical examination of and debate on the foundations of quantum mechanics (QM) by presenting two local hidden variable (LHV) rules in the context of the EPRB experiment which violate Bell's inequality, but which are nevertheless local and deterministic under reasonable definitions of the terms, and coincide approximately with the conventional QM prediction. The theories are based on the general idea of probabilistic detection of particles depending on an interaction of hidden variables within the measuring device and particle, and relate mathematically to Fourie…
For all Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type experiments on deterministic systems the Bell inequality holds, unless non-local interactions exist between certain parts of the setup. Here we show that in nonlinear systems the Bell inequality can be violated by non-local effects that are arbitrarily weak. Then we show that the quantum result of the existing Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type experiments can be reproduced within deterministic models that include arbitrarily weak non-local effects.
We present a detailed analysis of the Bell measurement scheme proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 113603 (2015)] based on a logical qubit using Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement of photons. The success probability of the proposed Bell measurement can be made arbitrarily high using only linear optics as the number of photons in a logical qubit increases. We compare our scheme with all the other proposals, using single-photon qubits, coherent-state qubits or hybrid qubits, suggested to enhance the efficiency of the Bell measurement. As a remarkable advantage, our scheme requires only…
By assuming a deterministic evolution of quantum systems and taking realism into account, we carefully build a hidden variable theory for Quantum Mechanics based on the notion of ontological states proposed by 't Hooft. We view these ontological states as the ones embedded with realism and compare them to the (usual) quantum states that represent superpositions, viewing the latter as mere information of the system they describe. Such a deterministic model puts forward conditions for the applicability of Bell's inequality: the usual inequality cannot be applied to the usual experiments. We buil…
We present a protocol for deterministic and highly efficient quantum cryptography with entangled photon pairs in a 4x4-dimentional Hilbert space. Two communicating parties, Alice and Bob first share a both polarization- and path-entangled photon pair, and then each performs a complete Bell-state measurement on their own photon in one of two complementary Bell-state bases. It is demonstrated that each measurement in which both Alice and Bob register a photon can build certain perfect correlation and generate 1.5 key bits on average. The security of our protocol is guaranteed by the non-cloning …
We introduce a quasi-deterministic eigenstate transition model of analyzers in which the final eigenstate is selected by initial conditions. We combine this analyzer model with causal spin coupling to calculate both proton-proton and photon-photon correlations, one particle pair at a time. The calculated correlations exceed the Bell limits and show excellent agreement with the measured correlations of [M. Lamehi-Rachti and W. Mittig, Phys. Rev. D 14 (10), 2543 (1976)] and [ A. Aspect, P. Grangier and G. Rogers, Phys. Rev. Lett. 49 91 (1982)] respectively. We discuss why this model exceeds the …
Complementarity have been an intriguing feature of physical systems for a long time. In this work we establish a new kind of complimentary relations in the frame work of quantum information processing tasks. In broadcasting of entanglement we create many pairs of less entangled states from a given entangled state both by local and non local cloning operations. These entangled states can be used in various information processing tasks like teleportation and superdense coding. Since these states are less entangled states it is quite intuitive that these states are not going to be as powerful res…
We consider tests of Leggett-Garg's macrorealism and of macroscopic local realism, where for spacelike separated measurements the assumption of macroscopic noninvasive measurability is justified by that of macroscopic locality. We give a mapping between the Bell and Leggett-Garg experiments for microscopic qubits based on spin $1/2$ eigenstates and gedanken experiments for macroscopic qubits based on two macroscopically distinct coherent states (cat states). In this mapping, the unitary rotation of the Stern-Gerlach analyzer is realized by an interaction $H=Ω\hat{n}^{4}$ where $\hat{n}$ is the…
The assumption of measurement independence is required for a local deterministic model to conduct a Bell test. The violation of a Bell inequality by such a model implies that this assumption must be relaxed. The degree to which the assumption needs to be relaxed to achieve violation of some bipartite Bell inequalities, has been investigated recently in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 250404(2010), Phys. Rev. A 99, 012121(2019)]. In this work, we study the minimum degree of relaxation required to simulate violations of various well-known tripartite Bell inequalities and opens the possibility of relaxati…
In the well-studied (2,2,2) Bell experiment consisting of two parties, two measurement settings per party, and two possible outcomes per setting, it is known that if the experiment obeys no-signaling constraints, then the set of admissible experimental probability distributions is fully characterized as the convex hull of 24 distributions: 8 Popescu-Rohrlich (PR) boxes and 16 local deterministic distributions. Here, we refine this result to show that in the (2,2,2) case, any nonlocal nonsignaling distribution can always be uniquely expressed as a convex combination of exactly one PR box and (u…
We investigate the possibility of realizing a loophole-free violation of Bell's inequality using deterministic single-photon sources. We provide a detailed analysis of a scheme to achieve such violations over long distances with immediate extensions to device-independent quantum key distribution. We investigate the effect of key experimental imperfections that are unavoidable in real-world single-photon sources including the finite degree of photon indistinguishability, single-photon purity, and the overall source efficiency. We benchmark the performance requirements to state-of-the-art determ…
We derive a lower bound for the optimal fidelity for deterministic cloning a set of n pure states. In connection with states estimation, we obtain a lower bound about average maximum correct states estimation probability.
Quantum communication relies on the efficient generation of entanglement between remote quantum nodes, due to entanglement's key role in achieving and verifying secure communications. Remote entanglement has been realized using a number of different probabilistic schemes, but deterministic remote entanglement has only recently been demonstrated, using a variety of superconducting circuit approaches. However, the deterministic violation of a Bell inequality, a strong measure of quantum correlation, has not to date been demonstrated in a superconducting quantum communication architecture, in par…
Bell's Theorem proved that one cannot in general reproduce the results of quantum theory with a classical, deterministic local model. However, Einstein originally considered the case where one could define an 'element of reality', namely for the much simpler case where one could predict with certainty a definite outcome for an experiment. For this simple case, Bell's Theorem says nothing. But by using a slightly more complicated model than Bell, one can show that even in this simple case where one can make definite predictions, one still cannot generally introduce deterministic, local models t…
A deterministic direct quantum communication protocol by using swapping quantum entanglement and local unitary operations is proposed in this paper. A set of ordered EPR pairs in one of the four Bell states is used. For each pair, each of the two legitimate users owns a photon of the entangled pair via quantum channel. The pairs are divided into two types of group, i.e., the checking groups and the encoding-decoding groups. In the checking groups, taking advantage of the swapping quantum entanglement and Alice's (the message sender's) public announcement, the eavesdropping can be detected prov…
We investigate an entangled deformation of the deterministic quantum cloning process, called enscription, that can be applied to (certain) sets of distinct quantum states which are not necessarily orthogonal, called texts. Some basic theorems on enscribable texts are given, and a relationship to probabilistic quantum cloning is demonstrated.
Efficient teleportation is a crucial step for quantum computation and quantum networking. In the case of qubits, four different entangled Bell states have to be distinguished. We have realized a probabilistic, but in principle deterministic, Bell-state analyzer for two photonic quantum bits by the use of a nondestructive controlled-NOT gate based on entirely linear optical elements. This gate was capable of distinguishing between all of the Bell states with higher than 75% fidelity without any noise substraction due to utilizing quantum interference effects.
The derivation of Bell inequalities requires an assumption of measurement independence, related to the amount of free will experimenters have in choosing measurement settings. Violation of these inequalities by singlet state correlations, as has been experimentally observed, brings this assumption into question. A simple measure of the degree of measurement independence is defined for correlation models, and it is shown that all spin correlations of a singlet state can be modeled via giving up a fraction of just 14% of measurement independence. The underlying model is deterministic and no-sign…
A local and deterministic model of quantum correlations is always possible, as shown explicitly by Brans in 1988: one simply needs the physical systems being measured to have a suitable statistical correlation with the physical systems performing the measurement, via some common cause. Hence, to derive no-go results such as Bell inequalities, an assumption of measurement independence is crucial. It is a surprisingly strong assumption -- less than 1/15 bits of prior correlation suffice for a local model of the singlet state of two qubits -- with ramifications for the security of quantum communi…
We show that one can deterministically generate out of $N$ copies of an unknown unitary operation up to $N^2$ almost perfect copies. The result holds for all operations generated by a Hamiltonian with an unknown interaction strength. This generalizes a similar result in the context of phase covariant cloning where, however, super-replication comes at the price of an exponentially reduced probability of success. We also show that multiple copies of unitary operations can be emulated by operations acting on a much smaller space, e.g., a magnetic field acting on a single $n$-level system allows o…
Investigating a class of models that is familiar in studies of cellular automata, we find that quantum operators can be employed to describe their long distance behavior. These operators span a Hilbert space that appears to turn such a model into a genuine quantum field theory, obeying the usual conditions of locality in terms of its quantum commutators. Entangled states can be constructed exactly as in quantum theories. This raises the question whether such models allow Bell's inequalities to be violated. Being a local, deterministic theory, one would argue that this is impossible, but since …
Does "epistemic non-signalling" ensure the peaceful coexistence of special relativity and quantum nonlocality? The possibility of an affirmative answer is of great importance to deterministic approaches to quantum mechanics given recent developments towards generalizations of Bell's theorem. By generalizations of Bell's theorem we here mean efforts that seek to demonstrate the impossibility of any deterministic theories to obey the predictions of Bell's theorem, including even nonlocal hidden-variables theories such as de Broglie-Bohm theory. The present work offers arguments showing why such …
It is shown that the before-before (or Suarez-Scarani) experiment refutes hidden variable models with a deterministic ("realistic") nonlocal part, and the experimental violation of Leggett-type inequalities models with a random nonlocal part and a biased random local one. Therefore the claim that Groeblacher et al. present "an experimental test of nonlocal realism" [Nature, 446, 871-875 (2007)] is misleading, and Marek Zukowski's comment [arXiv:0809.0072v1] misses the point. A new experiment is proposed.
We consider how recent experimental progress on deterministic solid state spin-photon interfaces enable the construction of a number of key elements of quantum networks. After reviewing some of the recent experimental achievements, we discuss their integration into Bell state analyzers, quantum non-demolition detection, and photonic cluster state generation. Finally, we outline how these elements can be used for long-distance entanglement generation and quantum key distribution in a quantum network.
A simple classical, deterministic, local situation violating the Bell inequality is described. The detectors used in the experiment are ideal and the observers who decide which pair of measuring devices to choose for a given pair of particles have free will. The construction uses random variables which are not jointly measurable in a single run of an experiment and the hidden variables have a nonsymmetric probability density. Such random variables are complementary but still fully classical. An assumption that classical random variables cannot satisfy any form of complementarity principle is f…
We give a detailed description of the implementation of a Molmer-Sorensen gate entangling two Ca+ ions using a bichromatic laser beam near-resonant with a quadrupole transition. By amplitude pulse shaping and compensation of AC-Stark shifts we achieve a fast gate operation without compromising the error rate. Subjecting different input states to concatenations of up to 21 individual gate operations reveals Bell state fidelities above 0.80. In principle, the entangling gate does not require ground state cooling of the ions as long as the Lamb-Dicke criterion is fulfilled. We present the first e…
We have prepared the internal states of two trapped ions in both the Bell-like singlet and triplet entangled states. In contrast to all other experiments with entangled states of either massive particles or photons, we do this in a deterministic fashion, producing entangled states on demand without selection. The deterministic production of entangled states is a crucial prerequisite for large-scale quantum computation.
Global, secure quantum channels will require efficient distribution of entangled photons. Long distance, low-loss interconnects can only be realized using photons as quantum information carriers. However, a quantum light source combining both high qubit fidelity and on-demand bright emission has proven elusive. Here, we show a bright photonic nanostructure generating polarization-entangled photon-pairs that strongly violates Bell's inequality. A highly symmetric InAsP quantum dot generating entangled photons is encapsulated in a tapered nanowire waveguide to ensure directional emission and eff…
