The quantum dynamics of nonrelativistic single particle systems involving noncommutative coordinates, usually referred to as noncommutative quantum mechanics, has lately been the object of several investigations. In this note we pursue these studies for the case of multi-particle systems. We use as a prototype the degenerate electron gas whose dynamics is well known in the commutative limit. Our central aim here is to understand qualitatively, rather than quantitatively, the main modifications induced by the presence of noncommutative coordinates. We shall first see that the noncommutativity modifies the exchange correlation energy while preserving the electric neutrality of the model. By employing time-independent perturbation theory together with the Seiberg-Witten map we show, afterwards, that the ionization potential is modified by the noncommutativity. It also turns out that the noncommutative parameter acts as a reference temperature. Hence, the noncommutativity lifts the degeneracy of the zero temperature electron gas.
We present a novel approach to modeling dynamics of trapped, degenerate, weakly interacting Bose gases beyond the mean field limit. We transform a many-body problem to the interaction representation with respect to a suitably chosen part of the Hamiltonian and only then apply a multimode coherent-state ansatz. The obtained equations are almost as simple as the Gross--Pitaevskii equation, but our approach captures essential features of the quantum dynamics such as the collapse of coherence.
The complete set of transport coefficients for two dimensional relativistic degenerate gases is derived within a relaxation approximation in kinetic theory, by considering both the particle and energy frames. A thorough comparison between Marle and Anderson-Witting's models is carried out, pointing out the drawbacks of the former when compared both to the latter and to the full Boltzmann equation results in the non-degenerate limit. Such task is accomplished by solving the relativistic Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation, in both the particle and energy frames, in order to establish the constitutive eq…
Spin-polarized samples and spin mixtures of quantum degenerate fermionic atoms are prepared in selected excited Bloch bands of an optical chequerboard square lattice. For the spin-polarized case, extreme band lifetimes above $10\,$s are observed, reflecting the suppression of collisions by Pauli's exclusion principle. For spin mixtures, lifetimes are reduced by an order of magnitude by two-body collisions between different spin components, but still remarkably large values of about one second are found. By analyzing momentum spectra, we can directly observe the orbital character of the optical…
A recent experimental realization of quantum degenerate gas of $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules opens up prospects of exploring strong dipolar Fermi gases and many-body phenomena arising in that regime. Here we derive a mean-field variational approach based on the Wigner function for the description of ground-state properties of such systems. We show that the stability of dipolar fermions in a general harmonic trap is universal as it only depends on the trap aspect ratios and the dipoles' orientation. We calculate the species-independent stability diagram and the deformation of the Fermi surface (F…
