We address the problem of spring-like coupling between bosons in an open chain configuration where the counter-rotating terms are explicitly included. We show that fruitful insight can be gained by decomposing the time-evolution operator of this problem into a pattern of linear-optics elements. This allows us to provide a clear picture of the effects of the counter-rotating terms in the important problem of long-haul entanglement distribution. The analytic control over the variance matrix of the state of the bosonic register allows us to track the dynamics of the entanglement. This helps in designing a global addressing scheme, complemented by a proper initialization of the register, which quantitatively improves the entanglement between the extremal oscillators in the chain, thus providing a strategy for feasible long distance entanglement distribution.
We propose a simple scheme to measure squeezing and phase properties of a harmonic oscillator. We treat in particular the case of a the field, but the scheme may be easily realized in ion traps. It is based on integral transforms of measured atomic properties as atoms exit a cavity. We show that by measuring atomic polarizations it is possible, after a given integration, to measure several properties of the field.
We investigate the exact dynamics of a system of two independent harmonic oscillators coupled through their angular momentum. The exact analytic solution of the equations of motion for the field operators is derived, and the conditions for dynamical stability are obtained. As application, we examine the emergence of squeezing and mode entanglement for an arbitrary separable coherent initial state. It is shown that close to instability, the system develops considerable entanglement, which is accompanied with simultaneous squeezing in the coordinate of one oscillator and the momentum of the othe…
We consider the thermodynamic properties of the squeezed vacuum state of a frequency--modulated quantum harmonic oscillator. We analytically relate the squeezing parameter to the irreversible work and the degree of nonadiabaticity of the frequency transformation. We furthermore determine the optimal modulation that leads to maximal squeezing, and discuss its implementation as well as the detection of squeezing in single cold ion traps.
We study the harmonic entanglement and squeezing in a two-mode radiation produced in a degenerate parametric down conversion process coupled to a two-mode vacuum reservoir employing the linearization procedure. It is found that there is a quadrature entanglement between the harmonically related fundamental and second-harmonic modes and the superimposed radiation exhibits a significant two-mode squeezing. The entanglement exits even when there is no two-mode squeezing, since the correlation leading to these phenomena are essentially different. In addition, the more the external coherent light i…
We show that a squeezed bath, that acts on the central element of a harmonic chain, can drive the whole system to a steady state featuring a series of nested entangled pairs of oscillators that, ideally, covers the whole chain regardless of its size. We study how to realize this effect in various physical implementations, including optomechanical and superconducting devices, using currently available technologies. In these cases no squeezed fields are actually needed, and the squeezed bath is, instead, simulated by quantum reservoir engineering with bichromatic drives.
Quantum sensing and quantum information processing use quantum advantages such as squeezed states that encode a quantity of interest with higher precision and generate quantum correlations to outperform classical methods. In harmonic oscillators, the rate of generating squeezing is set by a quantum speed limit. Therefore, the degree to which a quantum advantage can be used in practice is limited by the time needed to create the state relative to the rate of unavoidable decoherence. Alternatively, a sudden change of harmonic oscillator's frequency projects a ground state into a squeezed state w…
In this work, the dynamics of the deformed one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with minimal length uncertainty is examined and the analytical solutions for time evolution of position and momentum operators are presented in which the rough approximation that neglects the higher order terms in BakerHausdor lemma is avoided. Based on these analytical solutions the uncertainties for position and momentum operators are calculated in a coherent state, and an unexpected squeezing effect in both coordinate and momentum directions is found in comparison with ordinary harmonic oscillator. Obviously such…
In this communication we investigate the quantum statistics of three harmonic oscillators mutually interacting with each other considering the modes are initially in Fock states. After solving the equations of motion, the squeezing phenomenon, sub-Poissonian statistics and quasiprobability functions are discussed. We demonstrate that the interaction is able to produce squeezing of different types. We show also that certain types of Fock states can evolve in this interaction into thermal state and squeezed thermal state governed by the interaction parameters.
Inspired by the recent experiment of Hamsen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 133604 (2017)], which demonstrated two-photon blockade in a driven nonlinear system (composed of a harmonic cavity with a driven atom), we show that two-photon blockade and other nonstandard types of photon blockade and photon-induced tunneling can be generated in a driven harmonic cavity without an atom or any other kind of nonlinearity, but instead coupled to a nonlinear (i.e., squeezed) reservoir. We also simulate these single- and two-photon effects with squeezed coherent states and displaced squeezed thermal states.
We propose a method for generation of a single-cycle squeezed light by parametric down-conversion in a chirped quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystal. We find an exact quantum solution for this process valid for an arbitrary parametric gain, and discover an ultrabroadband squeezing in the down-converted light with flat squeezing spectrum comprising the full optical octave. We describe a scheme for observation of this kind of squeezing using second-harmonic generation as an ultrafast correlator.
We consider a system of laser-cooled ions in a linear harmonic trap and study the phenomenon of squeezing exchange between their internal and motional degrees of freedom. An interesting relation between the quantum noise reduction (squeezing) and the dynamical evolution is found when the internal and motional subsystems are prepared in properly squeezed (intelligent) states. Specifically, the evolution of the system is fully governed by the relative strengths of spectroscopic and motional squeezing, including the phenomenon of total cancellation of the interaction when the initial squeezing pa…
We study entanglement and squeezing of two uncoupled impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We treat them as two quantum Brownian particles interacting with a bath composed of the Bogoliubov modes of the condensate. The Langevin-like quantum stochastic equations derived exhibit memory effects. We study two scenarios: (i) In the absence of an external potential, we observe sudden death of entanglement; (ii) In the presence of an external harmonic potential, entanglement survives even at the asymptotic time limit. Our study considers experimentally tunable parameters.
Quantum noise in a model of singly resonant frequency doubling including phase mismatch and driving in the harmonic mode is analyzed. The general formulae about the fixed points and their stability as well as the squeezing spectra calculated linearizing around such points are given. The use of a nonlinear normalization allows to disentangle in the spectra the dynamic response of the system from the contributions of the various noisy inputs. A general ``reference'' model for one-mode systems is developed in which the dynamic aspects of the problem are not contaminated by static contributions fr…
We consider a system consisting of a single two-level ion in a harmonic trap, which is localized inside a non-ideal optical cavity at zero temperature and subjected to the action of two external lasers. We are able to obtain an analytical solution for the total density operator of the system and show that squeezing in the motion of the ion and in the cavity field is generated. We also show that complete revivals of the states of the motion of the ion and of the cavity field occur periodically.
We present a study of photon statistics associated with high-order harmonic generation (HHG) involving one-mode and intermodal correlations of the high harmonic photons. The aim of the paper is to give insight into the nonclassical properties of high-order harmonic modes. To this end, we use a simplified model describing an elementary quantum emitter: the model of a two-level atom. While the material system is extremely simplified in this description, the conclusions and the methods may be generalized for more complex cases. Our primary interest is an effective model of HHG in which the exciti…
In this work, we provide an answer to the question: how sudden or adiabatic is a change in the frequency of a quantum harmonic oscillator (HO)? To do this, we investigate the behavior of a HO, initially in its fundamental state, by making a frequency transition that we can control how fast it occurs. The resulting state of the system is shown to be a vacuum squeezed state in two bases related by Bogoliubov transformations. We characterize the time evolution of the squeezing parameter in both bases and discuss its relation with adiabaticity by changing the rate of the frequency transition from …
We present a protocol for measuring the quadrature of a harmonic oscillator (HO). The HO is coupled to a qubit, with an interaction modulated by the qubit control and effectively proportional to the HO quadrature $I$. Repeated measurement of the qubit leads to gradually increasing information on the quadrature $I$, leading to squeezing. We derive an analytical formula for the quadrature variance, $(ΔI)^2 = 1/(1+4ϕ^2 s)$, with $ϕ$ the product of interaction strength and interaction time and $s$ the number of repetitions of the measurement. We discuss the robustness of this scheme against decohe…
We discuss the general matrix elements of the squeezing operator between number eigenstates of a harmonic oscillator (which may also represent a quantized mode of the electromagnetic radiation). These matrix elements have first been used by Popov and Perelomov (1969) long ago, in their thorough analysis of the parametric excitation of harmonic oscillators. They expressed the matrix elements in terms of transcendental functions, the associated Legendre functions. In the present paper we will show that these matrix elements can also be expressed by the classical Gegenbauer polynomials. This new …
Higher order nonclassical properties of fields propagating through a codirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler which is prepared by combining a linear wave guide and a nonlinear (quadratic) wave guide operated by second harmonic generation are studied. A completely quantum mechanical description is used here to describe the system. Closed form analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various modes are used to show the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing, higher order two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the asymmetric nonlinear optical c…
Recently, model systems with quadratic Hamiltonians and time-dependent interactions were studied by Briegel and Popescu and by Galve et al. in order to consider the possibility of both quantum refrigeration in enzymes [Proc. R. Soc. 469 20110290 (2013)] and entanglement in the high temperature limit [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 180501 (2010); Phys. Rev. A 81 062117 (2010)]. Following this line of research, we studied a model comprising two quantum harmonic oscillators driven by a time-dependent harmonic coupling. Such a system was embedded in a thermal bath represented in two different ways. In one c…
We propose a scheme for the generation of a robust stationary squeezed state of a mechanical resonator in a quadratically coupled optomechanical system, driven by a pulsed laser. The intracavity photon number presents periodic intense peaks suddenly stiffening the effective harmonic potential felt by the mechanical resonator. These "optical spring kicks" tend to squeeze the resonator position, and due to the interplay with fluctuation-dissipation processes one can generate a stationary state with more than 13 dB of squeezing even starting from moderately "pre-cooled" initial thermal states.
The limitations on the production and profitability of entanglement in a harmonic chain under strong driving are considered. We report on the limits of attainable entanglement for a given set of squeezings of the eigenmodes, showing that the higher the entanglement the more oscillatory and thus less easy to profit from. We also comment on propagation properties of entanglement, discussing the role of fast rotating terms and illustrating several issues with the example of a sudden switch of the coupling.
We investigate the effects of a squeezed pump on the quantum properties and conversion efficiency of the light produced in single-pass second harmonic generation. Using stochastic integration of the two-mode equations of motion in the positive-P representation, we find that larger violations of continuous-variable harmonic entanglement criteria are available for lesser effective interaction strengths than with a coherent pump. This enhancement of the quantum properties also applies to violations of the Reid-Drummond inequalities used to demonstrate a harmonic version of the Einstein-Podolsky-R…
We report on effective generation of continuous-wave squeezed light and second harmonics with a periodically poled MgO:LiNbO$_{\mathrm{3}}$ (PPMgLN) crystal which enables us to utilize the large nonlinear optical coefficient $d_{\mathrm{33}}$. We achieved the squeezing level of $-7.60 \pm 0.15$dB at 860 nm by utilizing a subthreshol optical parametric oscillator with a PPMgLN crystal. We also generated 400 mW of second harmonics at 430 nm from 570 mW of fundamental waves with 70% of conversion efficiency by using a PPMgLN crystal inside an external cavity.
We study a bulk fermionic dipolar molecular gas in the quantum degenerate regime confined in a two-dimensional geometry. We consider two rotational states that encode a spin 1/2 degree of freedom. We derive a long-range interacting XXZ model describing the many-body spin dynamics of the molecules valid in the regime where motional degrees of freedom are frozen. Due to the spatially extended nature of the harmonic oscillator modes, the interactions in the spin model are very long-ranged and the system behaves close to the collective limit, resulting in robust dynamics and generation of entangle…
We describe a six-parameter family of the minimum-uncertainty squeezed states for the harmonic oscillator in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. They are derived by the action of corresponding maximal kinematical invariance group on the standard ground state solution. We show that the product of the variances attains the required minimum value 1/4 only at the instances that one variance is a minimum and the other is a maximum, when the squeezing of one of the variances occurs. The generalized coherent states are explicitly constructed and their Wigner function is studied. The overlap coefficien…
We investigate nonlinear effects on the dynamics of entanglement and other quantum observables in a system of two harmonic modes coupled through angular momentum. The nonlinearity arises from a quartic anharmonic term in each mode. The emergence and evolution of entanglement, non-gaussianity, photon number, photon antibunching and squeezing are examined for different initial product coherent states and couplings, through exact diagonalization in a truncated basis. It is shown that the anharmonic terms, even if weak, can lead to very significant effects for such initial states, considerably enh…
Squeezing is a resource that enables precision enhancements in quantum metrology and can be used as a basis for the generation of entanglement by linear optics. While strong squeezing is challenging to generate in optical fields, here we present simple periodic modulation protocols in optomechanical systems that can generate large squeezing of their mechanical degrees of freedom for realistic system parameters. We then proceed to show how such protocols can serve to improve the measurement precision of weak forces and enhance the generation of entanglement between test masses that are subject …
The quantum mechanical three-body problem is a source of continuing interest due to its complexity and not least due to the presence of fascinating solvable cases. The prime example is the Efimov effect where infinitely many bound states of identical bosons can arise at the threshold where the two-body problem has zero binding energy. An important aspect of the Efimov effect is the effect of spatial dimensionality; it has been observed in three dimensional systems, yet it is believed to be impossible in two dimensions. Using modern experimental techniques, it is possible to engineer trap geome…
