We present a study of photon statistics associated with high-order harmonic generation (HHG) involving one-mode and intermodal correlations of the high harmonic photons. The aim of the paper is to give insight into the nonclassical properties of high-order harmonic modes. To this end, we use a simplified model describing an elementary quantum emitter: the model of a two-level atom. While the material system is extremely simplified in this description, the conclusions and the methods may be generalized for more complex cases. Our primary interest is an effective model of HHG in which the exciting pulse is classical, and the harmonics are quantized, although we touch upon the more generalized, fully quantized model as well. Evolution of the Mandel-parameter, photon antibunching, squeezing and cross-correlations are calculated. Results imply that with respect to a single quantized emitter, nonclassicality of the harmonics is present: sub-Poissonian photon statistic and squeezing can characterize certain optical modes, while strong anticorrelation can also be present.
A systematic procedure for deriving the master equation of a dissipative system is reported in the framework of stochastic description. For the Caldeira-Leggett model of the harmonic-oscillator bath, a detailed and elementary derivation of the bath-induced stochastic field is presented. The dynamics of the system is thereby fully described by a stochastic differential equation and the desired master equation would be acquired with statistical averaging. It is shown that the existence of a closed-form master equation depends on the specificity of the system as well as the feature of the dissipa…
In this communication we investigate the quantum statistics of three harmonic oscillators mutually interacting with each other considering the modes are initially in Fock states. After solving the equations of motion, the squeezing phenomenon, sub-Poissonian statistics and quasiprobability functions are discussed. We demonstrate that the interaction is able to produce squeezing of different types. We show also that certain types of Fock states can evolve in this interaction into thermal state and squeezed thermal state governed by the interaction parameters.
It was predicted some time ago that the cavity dynamical Casimir effect (generation of photons from the initial vacuum state in a cavity with moving walls) might be observed if a boundary vibrates at the double frequency of some selected cavity mode. However, to register the created photons one has to couple the cavity mode with some detector. Considering the harmonic oscillator model of a detector, we analyze how different coupling regimes can affect the statistics of the created quanta.
In this review, we compare different descriptions of photon-number statistics in harmonic generation processes within quantum, classical and semiclassical approaches. First, we study the exact quantum evolution of the harmonic generation by applying numerical methods including those of Hamiltonian diagonalization and global characteristics. We show explicitly that the harmonic generations can indeed serve as a source of nonclassical light. Then, we demonstrate that the quasi-stationary sub-Poissonian light can be generated in these quantum processes under conditions corresponding to the so-cal…
The conventional Brownian motion in harmonic systems has provided a deep understanding of a great diversity of dissipative phenomena. We address a rather fundamental microscopic description for the (linear) dissipative dynamics of two-dimensional harmonic oscillators that contains the conventional Brownian motion as a particular instance. This description is derived from first principles in the framework of the so-called Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics, or also known, Abelian topological massive gauge theory. Disregarding backreaction effects and endowing the system Hamiltonian with a sui…
The inner-outer part factorisation of analytic representations in the unit disk is used for an effective characterisation of the number-phase statistical properties of a quantum harmonic oscillator. It is shown that the factorisation is intimately connected to the number-phase Weyl semigroup and its properties. In the Barut-Girardello analytic representation the factorisation is implemented as a convolution. Several examples are given which demonstrate the physical significance of the factorisation and its role for quantum statistics. In particular, we study the effect of phase-space interfere…
Using the parametrically driven harmonic oscillator as a working example, we study two different Markovian approaches to the quantum dynamics of a periodically driven system with dissipation. In the simpler approach, the driving enters the master equation for the reduced density operator only in the Hamiltonian term. An improved master equation is achieved by treating the entire driven system within the Floquet formalism and coupling it to the reservoir as a whole. The different ensuing evolution equations are compared in various representations, particularly as Fokker-Planck equations for the…
We analyze a system coupled to a bath of independent harmonic oscillators. We transform the bath in chain structure by solving an inverse eigenvalue problem. We solve the equations of motion for the collective variables defined by this transformation, and we derive the exact dynamics for an harmonic oscillator in terms of the microscopic motion of the environmental modes. We compare this approach to the well-known Generalized Langevin Equation and we show that our dynamics satisfies this equation.
In this work, we perform a careful study of an special arrangement of coupled systems that consists of two external harmonic oscillators weakly coupled to an arbitrary network (data bus) of strongly interacting oscillators. Our aim is to establish simple effective Hamiltonians and Liouvillians allowing an accurate description of the dynamics of the external oscillators regardless the topology of the network. By simple we mean an effective description using just a few degrees of freedom. In order to do that, we employed the machinery of symplectic formalism to generalize and expand the ideas pr…
In this paper we study some basic quantum confinement effects through investigation of a deformed harmonic oscillator algebra. We show that spatial confinement effects on a quantum harmonic oscillator can be represented by a deformation function within the framework of nonlinear coherent states theory. We construct the coherent states associated with the spatially confined quantum harmonic oscillator in a one-dimensional infinite well and examine some of their quantum statistical properties, including sub-poissonian statistics and quadrature squeezing.
We describe quantum behaviors of a simple harmonic oscillator, starting from the classical mechanics. By imposing two conditions on the phase points generated from a symplectic algorithm, we obtain discrete energy levels, satisfying $E_n τ_n = h$ where $E_n$ is the total energy of the oscillator and $τ_n$ is the time step for the closed orbit of $n$-polygon in phase space. We can thus successfully integrate classical and quantum mechanics into a single frame, if we assume that time is discrete.
Specific nonequilibrium states of the quantum harmonic oscillator described by the Lindblad equation have been hereby suggested. This equation makes it possible to determine time-varying effects produced by statistical operator or statistical matrix. Thus, respective representation-varied equilibrium statistical matrixes have been found. Specific mean value equations have been found and their equilibrium solutions have been obtained.
In this paper, we present a rigorous analysis of symmetry and underlying physics of the nonlinear two-mode system driven by a harmonic mixing field, by means of multiple scale asymptotic analysis method. The effective description in the framework of the second-order perturbative theory provides an accurate picture for understanding the Floquet eigenspectrum and dynamical features of the nonlinear two-mode system, showing full agreement with the prediction of symmetry considerations. We find that two types of symmetries play significant role in the dynamical features of this model, the mechanis…
The quantum dynamics of a damped and forced harmonic oscillator is investigated in terms of a Lindblad master equation. Elementary algebraic techniques are employed allowing for example to analyze the long time behavior, i.e. the quantum limit cycle. The time evolution of various expectation values is obtained in closed form as well as the entropy and the Husimi phase space distribution. We also discuss the related description in terms of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.
The upside-down simple harmonic oscillator system is studied in the contexts of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. It is shown that in order to study in a simple manner the creation and decay of a physical system by ways of Gamow vectors we must formulate the theory in a time-asymmetric fashion, namely using two different rigged Hilbert spaces to describe states evolving towards the past and the future. The spaces defined in the contexts of quantum and classical statistical mechanics are shown to be directly related by the Wigner function.
The damped harmonic oscillator is a workhorse for the study of dissipation in quantum mechanics. However, despite its simplicity, this system has given rise to some approximations whose validity and relation to more refined descriptions deserve a thorough investigation. In this work, we apply a method that allows us to diagonalize exactly the dissipative Hamiltonians that are frequently adopted in the literature. Using this method we derive the conditions of validity of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and show how this approximate description relates to more general ones. We also show th…
The Fisher-Shannon information and a statistical measure of complexity are calculated in the position and momentum spaces for the wave functions of the quantum isotropic harmonic oscillator. We show that these magnitudes are independent of the strength of the harmonic potential. Moreover, for each level of energy, it is found that these two indicators take their minimum values on the orbitals that correspond to the classical (circular) orbits in the Bohr-like quantum image, just those with the highest orbital angular momentum.
It is shown that the statistical conception of quantum mechanics is dynamical but not probabilistic, i.e. the statistical description in quantum mechanics is founded on dynamics. A use of the probability theory, when it takes place, is auxiliary. Attention is drawn to the fact that in the quantum mechanics there are two different objects: an individual object to be statistically described and a statistical average object, which is a result of the statistical description. Identification of the two different objects (a use of the same term for both) is an origin of many known quantum mechanics p…
In this paper, we study the dynamical properties of two coupled quantum harmonic oscillators coupled with bosonic non-Markovian environment both in position and momentum. We deduce the exact analytical master equation using Quantum State Diffusion method and give the quantum trajectory description when the control is added to the system by applying interaction between two harmonic oscillators. With numerical simulation, we compare the evolution of entanglement under different controlling effects. At last, we use nonlinear Quantum State Diffusion method to strengthen our above results by gettin…
Motivated by Haldane's exclusion statistics, we construct creation and annihilation operators for $g$-ons using a bosonic algebra. We find that $g$-ons appear due to the breaking of a descrete symmetry of the original bosonic system. This symmetry is intimately related to the braid group and we demonstrate a link between exclusion statistics and fractional statistics.
The de Broglie-Bohm quantum trajectories are found in analytically closed forms for the eigenstates and the coherent state of the Lewis-Riesenfeld (LR) invariant of a time-dependent harmonic oscillator. It is also shown that an eigenstate (a coherent state) of an invariant can be interpreted as squeezed states obtained by squeezing an eigenstate (a coherent state) of another invariant. This provides ways for a whole description of squeezed states.
Analytic expressions for the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a one-dimensional harmonic crystal are obtained. The average energy and density profiles are obtained numerically as a function of temperature. A surprisingly large number of energy levels (eg.\ 5,000 for 4 particles) are required for reliable results at even moderate temperatures.
The quantum theory of the damped harmonic oscillator has been a subject of continual investigation since the 1930s. The obstacle to quantization created by the dissipation of energy is usually dealt with by including a discrete set of additional harmonic oscillators as a reservoir. But a discrete reservoir cannot directly yield dynamics such as Ohmic damping (proportional to velocity) of the oscillator of interest. By using a continuum of oscillators as a reservoir, we canonically quantize the harmonic oscillator with Ohmic damping and also with general damping behaviour. The dynamics of a dam…
The von Neumann trace form of quantum statistical mechanics is transformed to an integral over classical phase space. Formally exact expressions for the resultant position-momentum commutation function are given. A loop expansion for wave function symmetrization is also given. The method is tested for quantum harmonic oscillators. For both the boson and fermion cases, the grand potential and the average energy obtained by numerical quadrature over classical phase space are shown to agree with the known analytic results. A mean field approximation is given which is suitable for condensed matter…
We investigate the relationship between information scrambling and work statistics after a quench for the paradigmatic example of short-range interacting particles in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, considering up to five particles numerically. In particular, we find that scrambling requires finite interactions, in the presence of which the long-time average of the squared commutator for the individual canonical operators is directly proportional to the variance of the work probability distribution. In addition to the numerical results, we outline the mathematical structure of the N-body syst…
The idea that a system obeying interpolating statistics can be described by a deformed oscillator algebra has been an outstanding issue. This original concept introduced long ago by Greenberg is the motivation for this investigation. We establish that a q-deformed algebra can be used to describe the statistics of particles (anyons) interpolating continuously between Bose and Fermi statistics, i.e., fractional statistics. We show that the generalized intermediate statistics splits into the Boson-like and Fermion-like regimes, each described by a unique oscillator algebra. The B-anyon thermostat…
We describe a method to compute thermodynamic quantities in the harmonic approximation for identical bosons and fermions in an external confining field. We use the canonical partition function where only energies and their degeneracies enter. The number of states of given energy and symmetry is found by separating the center of mass motion, and counting the remaining states of given symmetry and excitation energy of the relative motion. The oscillator frequencies that enter the harmonic Hamiltonian can be derived from realistic model parameters and the method corresponds to an effective intera…
Magic numbers predicted by a 3-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator with Uq(3)>SOq(3) symmetry are compared to experimental data for atomic clusters of alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), noble metals (Cu, Ag, Au), divalent metals (Zn, Cd), and trivalent metals (Al, In), as well as to theoretical predictions of jellium models, Woods-Saxon and wine bottle potentials, and to the classification scheme using the 3n+l pseudo quantum number. In alkali metal clusters and noble metal clusters the 3-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator correctly predicts all experimentally observed magic num…
The interaction of matter with a quantized electromagnetic mode is considered. Representing a strong exciting field, the mode is assumed to contain a large number of photons. As a result, the material response is highly nonlinear: the completely quantized description results in generation of high harmonics. In order to understand the essence of the physical processes that are involved, we consider a finite dimensional model for the material system. Using an appropriate description in phase space, this approach leads to a transparent picture showing that the interaction splits the initial, exci…
We return to the description of the damped harmonic oscillator by means of a closed quantum theory with a general assessment of previous works, in particular the Bateman-Caldirola-Kanai model and a new model recently proposed by one of the authors. We show the local equivalence between the two models and argue that latter has better high energy behavior and is naturally connected to existing open-quantum-systems approaches.
We study the role of quantum statistics in the performance of Otto cycles. First, we show analytically that the work distributions for bosonic and fermionic working fluids are identical for cycles driven by harmonic trapping potentials. Subsequently, in the case of non-harmonic potentials, we find that the interplay between different energy level spacings and particle statistics strongly affects the performances of the engine cycle. To demonstrate this, we examine three trapping potentials which induce different (single particle) energy level spacings: monotonically decreasing with the level n…
In this paper we analyze the quantum uncertainties and the photon statistics in the interaction between the two modes of radiation by treating them as coupled harmonic oscillator with the motivation of controlling quantum properties of one light beam by another. Under the rotating wave approximation (RWA) we show that if initially one of the modes is coherent and the other one squeezed, then the squeezing and non-Poissonianness of the photon statistics can transfer from one mode to the other. We give a parametric study of these properties depending upon interaction time and the degree of initi…
