We address the problem of spin dynamics in the presence of a thermal bath, by solving exactly the appropriate quantum master equations with continued-fraction methods. The crossover region between the quantum and classical domains is studied by increasing the spin value S, and the asymptote for the classical absorption spectra is eventually recovered. Along with the recognized relevance of the coupling strength, we show the critical role played by the structure of the system-environment interaction in the emergence of classical phenomenology.
In presence of dissipation, quantal states may acquire complex-valued phase effects. We suggest a notion of dissipative interferometry that accommodates this complex-valued structure and that may serve as a tool for analyzing the effect of certain kinds of external influences on quantal interference. The concept of mixed-state phase and concomitant gauge invariance is extended to dissipative internal motion. The resulting complex-valued mixed-state interference effects lead to well-known results in the unitary limit and in the case of dissipative motion of pure quantal states. Dissipative inte…
We study quantum conditional entropy production, which quantifies the irreversibility of system-environment evolution from the perspective of a third system, called the reference. The reference is initially correlated with the system. We show that the quantum unconditional entropy production with respect to the system is less than the conditional entropy production with respect to the reference, where the latter includes a reference-induced dissipative information. The dissipative information pinpoints the distributive correlation established between the environment and the reference, even tho…
In this paper, we analyze two different techniques based on reservoir engineering method and quantum Zeno effect for controlling decoherence of a dissipative charged oscillator in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our main focus is to investigate the sensitiveness of these decoherence control techniques on the details of different environmental spectrum ($J(ω)$), and on the crucial role played by different system and reservoir parameters, e.g., external magnetic field ($r_c$), confinement length ($r_0$), temperature (T), cut-off frequency of reservoir spectrum ($ω_{cut}$), and measur…
We study the quantum entanglement between two coupled cavities, in which one is initially prepared in a mesoscopic superposition state and the other is in the vacuum in dissipative environment and show how the entanglement between two cavities can arise in the dissipative environment. The dynamic behavior of the nonlocality for the system is also investigated.
Modeling the dynamics of a quantum system connected to the environment is critical for advancing our understanding of complex quantum processes, as most quantum processes in nature are affected by an environment. Modeling a macroscopic environment on a quantum simulator may be achieved by coupling independent ancilla qubits that facilitate energy exchange in an appropriate manner with the system and mimic an environment. This approach requires a large, and possibly exponential number of ancillary degrees of freedom which is impractical. In contrast, we develop a digital quantum algorithm that …
We investigate the frequency estimation of an optical field suffering from an unavoidable dissipative environment. Generally, dissipative noises greatly reduce the precision. Here, we find that two-photon driving can improve the measurement precision by resisting the noises. Moreover, in long time, the uncertainty of frequency can be close to 0 with a proper magnitude of the parametric two-photon drive, which is in sharp contrast to the uncertainty going to infinity without the two-photon driving. Our results show that two-photon driving can realize the ultrasensitive measurement in dissipativ…
We show that two, non interacting 2-level systems, immersed in a common bath, can become mutually entangled when evolving according to a Markovian, completely positive reduced dynamics.
Recent findings suggest that processes such as the electronic energy transfer through the photosynthetic antenna display quantal features, aspects known from the dynamics of charge carriers along polymer backbones. Hence, in modeling energy transfer one has to leave the classical, master-equation-type formalism and advance towards an increasingly quantum-mechanical picture, while still retaining a local description of the complex network of molecules involved in the transport, say through a tight-binding approach. Interestingly, the continuous time random walk (CTRW) picture, widely employed i…
Quantum information processing rests on our ability to manipulate quantum superpositions through coherent unitary transformations, and to establish entanglement between constituent quantum components of the processor. The quantum information processor (a linear ion trap, or a cavity confining the radiation field for example) exists in a dissipative environment. We discuss ways in which entanglement can be established within such dissipative environments. We can even make use of a strong interaction of the system with its environment to produce entanglement in a controlled way.
A canonical quantization scheme is represented for a quantum system interacting with a nonlinear absorbing environment. The environment is taken anisotropic and the main system is coupled to its environment through some coupling tensors of various ranks. The nonlinear response equation of the environment against the motion of the main system is obtained. The nonlinear Langevin-schrödinger equation is concluded as the macroscopic equation of motion of the dissipative system. The effect of nonlinearity of the environment is investigated on the spontaneous emission of an initially excited two lev…
We investigate the quantum annealing of the ferromagnetic $ p $-spin model in a dissipative environment ($ p = 5 $ and $ p = 7 $). This model, in the large $ p $ limit, codifies the Grover's algorithm for searching in an unsorted database. The dissipative environment is described by a phonon bath in thermal equilibrium at finite temperature. The dynamics is studied in the framework of a Lindblad master equation for the reduced density matrix describing only the spins. Exploiting the symmetries of our model Hamiltonian, we can describe many spins and extrapolate expected trends for large $ N $,…
The trapping of excitations in systems coupled to an environment allows to study the quantum to classical crossover by different means. We show how to combine the phenomenological description by a non-hermitian Liouville-von Neumann Equation (LvNE) approach with the numerically exact path integral Monte-Carlo (PIMC) method, and exemplify our results for a system of two coupled two-level systems. By varying the strength of the coupling to the environment we are able to estimate the parameter range in which the LvNE approach yields satisfactory results. Moreover, by matching the PIMC results wit…
We investigate the performance of quantum parameter estimation based on a qubit probe in a dissipative bosonic environment beyond the traditional paradigm of weak-coupling and rotating-wave approximations. By making use of an exactly numerical hierarchical equations of motion method, we analyze the influences of the non-Markovian memory effect induced by the environment and the form of probe-environment interaction on the estimation precision. It is found that (i) the non-Markovianity can effectively boost the estimation performance and (ii) the estimation precision can be improved by introduc…
By diagonalization of a generalized superoperator for solving the master equation, we investigated effects of dissipative and dephasing environments on quantum state transfer, as well as entanglement distribution and creation in spin networks. Our results revealed that under the condition of the same decoherence rate $γ$, the detrimental effects of the dissipative environment are more severe than that of the dephasing environment. Beside this, the critical time $t_c$ at which the transfer fidelity and the concurrence attain their maxima arrives at the asymptotic value $t_0=π/2λ$ quickly as the…
A generalized expression for weak value of dwell time in dissipative systems has been constructed using the approach of Caldirola and Montaldi. An approximate measure of Zeno time has been found taking an asymmetric double well potential. Atomic tunneling between two surfaces is taken as a practical example. The formalism can be used for any solvable potential with exact or approximate energy eigenvalues.
An experimental scheme is suggested that permits a direct measure of entanglement in a two-qubit cavity system. It is realized in the cavity-QED technology utilizing atoms as flying qubits. With this scheme we generate two different measures of entanglement, namely logarithmic negativity and concurrence. The phenomenon of sudden death entanglement (ESD) in a bipartite system subjected to dissipative environment is examined. We show that the sudden death time of the entangled states depends on the initial preparation of the entangled state and the temperature of the reservoir.
Quantum field theory of a damped vibrating string as the simplest dissipative scalar field investigated by its coupling with an infinit number of Klein-Gordon fields as the environment by introducing a minimal coupling method. Heisenberg equation containing a dissipative term proportional to velocity obtained for a special choice of coupling function and quantum dynamics for such a dissipative system investigated. Some kinematical relations calculated by tracing out the environment degrees of freedom. The rate of energy flowing between the system and it's environment obtained.
We investigate the role of the cross decay rates in a system composed by two electromagnetic modes interacting with the same reservoir. Two feasible experiments sensitive to the magnitudes and phases of these rates are described. We show that if the cross decay rates are appreciable there are states less exposed to decoherence and dissipation, and in limit situations a decoherence free subspace appears.
We consider two ensembles of qubit dissipating into two overlapping environments, that is with a certain number of qubit in common that dissipate into both environments. We then study the dynamics of bipartite entanglement between the two ensembles by excluding the common qubit. To get analytical solutions for an arbitrary number of qubit we consider initial states with a single excitation and show that the largest amount of entanglement can be created when excitations are initially located among side (non common) qubit. Moreover, the stationary entanglement exhibits a monotonic (resp. non-mon…
The geometric (Berry) phase of a two-level system in a dissipative environment is analyzed by using the second-quantized formulation, which provides a unified and gauge-invariant treatment of adiabatic and nonadiabatic phases and is thus applicable to a quantitative analysis of transitional regions away from ideal adiabaticity. In view of the recent experimental observation of the Berry phase in a superconducting qubit, we illustrate our formulation for a concrete adiabatic case in the Ohmic dissipation. The correction to the total phase together with the geometry-dependent dephasing time is g…
Quantum metrology allows us to attain a measurement precision that surpasses the classically achievable limit by using quantum characters. The metrology precision is raised from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL) by using entanglement. However, it was reported that the HL returns to the SQL in the presence of local dephasing environments under the long encoding-time condition. We evaluate here the exact impacts of local dissipative environments on quantum metrology, based on the Ramsey interferometer. It is found that the HL is asymptotically recovered under the long…
We investigate spin squeezing for a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model coupled to a general non-Markovian environment in a finite temperature regime. Using the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion and master equation approach, we numerically study non-Markovian spin squeezing generation in LMG model. Our results show that the total spin number N, energy kBT, and certain coefficients in a LMG model can play a crucial role in generating spin squeezing. In particular, it shows that the maximum spin squeezing can be significantly enhanced when the participating environment has a relatively long mem…
We discuss the quantum annealing of the fully-connected ferromagnetic $ p $-spin model in a dissipative environment at low temperature. This model, in the large $ p $ limit, encodes in its ground state the solution to the Grover's problem of searching in unsorted databases. In the framework of the quantum circuit model, a quantum algorithm is known for this task, providing a quadratic speed-up with respect to its best classical counterpart. This improvement is not recovered in adiabatic quantum computation for an isolated quantum processor. We analyze the same problem in the presence of a low-…
We investigate the dissipative dynamics of quantum discord in a decoherence model with two initially entangled qubits in addition to a quantum kicked top. The two qubits are uncoupled during the period of our study and one of them interacts with the quantum kicked top. We find that the long time behavior of quantum discord could be well described by the fidelity decay of the quantum kicked top; for short time behavior, however, the phase of the amplitude of the fidelity decay is necessary to provide more specific information about the system. We have made comparison between the quantum kicked …
We study the correction of errors intervening in two-qubit dissipating into their own environments. This is done by resorting to local feedback actions with the aim of preserving as much as possible the initial amount of entanglement. Optimal control is found by first gaining insights from the subsystem purity and then by numerical analysis on the concurrence. This is tantamount to a double optimization, on the actuation and on the measurement processes. Repeated feedback action is also investigated, thus paving the way for a continuous time formulation and solution of the problem.
We study two trapped ions coupled to the axial phonon modes of a one-dimensional Coulomb crystal. This system is formally equivalent to the "two spin-boson" model. We propose a scheme to dynamically generate a maximally entangled state of two ions within a decoherence-free subspace. Here the phononic environment of the trapped ions, whatever its temperature and number of modes, serves as the entangling bus. The efficient production of the pure singlet state can be exploited to perform short-ranged quantum communication which is essential in building up a large-scale quantum computer.
We propose a dissipative method to prepare the ground state of the isotropic XY spin Hamiltonian in a transverse field. Our model consists of a spin chain with nearest-neighbour interactions and an additional collective coupling of the spins to a damped harmonic oscillator. The latter provides an effective environment with a Lorentzian spectral density and can be used to drive the chain asymptotically towards its multipartite-entangled ground state at a rate that depends on the degree of non-Markovianity of the evolution. We also present a detailed proposal for the experimental implementation …
Quantum metrology utilizes quantum effects to reach higher precision measurements of physical quantities compared with their classical counterparts. However the ubiquitous decoherence obstructs its application. Recently, non-Markovian effects are shown to be effective in performing quantum optical metrology under locally dissipative environments\cite{PhysRevLett.123.040402}. However, the mechanism is still rather hazy. Here, we uncover the reason why forming a bound state can protect the quantumness against a dissipative ambient via the quantum Fisher information of entangled coherent states. …
We consider a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in order to effectively describe a two-level system coupled to a generic dissipative environment. The total Hamiltonian of the model is obtained by adding a general anti-Hermitian part, depending on four parameters, to the Hermitian Hamiltonian of a tunneling two-level system. The time evolution is formulated and derived in terms of the normalized density operator of the model, different types of decays are revealed and analyzed. In particular, the population difference and coherence are defined and calculated analytically. We have been able to mimic var…
We study the dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator with general non-thermal preparations of the harmonic oscillator bath. The focus is on equilibration of the oscillator in the long-time limit and the additional requirements for thermalization. Our study is based on the exact solution of the microscopic model obtained by means of operator equations of motion, which provides us with the time evolution of the central oscillator density matrix in terms of the propagating function. We find a hierarchy of conditions for thermalization, together with the relation of the asymptotic temperature to t…
We study the dissipative dynamics of a wave packet passing through two different non-linear media. The effect of dissipation on the phenomenon of collapses and revivals of a wave packet as it evolves in a Kerr-type non-linear medium (represented by the Hamiltonian $({a}^† a)^2$) is investigated. We find that partial revivals do take place when dissipation values are moderate. For a certain regime of parameters we find a solution where revivals do not die even in the presence of dissipation and the non-linearity appears to compensate for the energy and coherence loss. We consider the next order…
We have investigated the effect of counter-rotating terms on the dynamics of entanglement and quantum discord between two identical atoms interacting with a lossy single mode cavity field for a system initially in a vacuum state. The counter-rotating terms are found to lead to steady states in the long time limit which can have high quantum discord, but have no entanglement. The effect of cavity decay rate on this steady state quantum discord has been also investigated, surprisingly, the increase in cavity decay rate is found to both enhance and maximize the steady quantum discord for separabl…
A model is presented to describe the recently proposed experiment (J. Raimond, M. Brune and S. Haroche Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 79}, 1964 (1997)) where a mesoscopic superposition of radiation states is prepared in a high-Q cavity which is coupled to a similar resonator. The dynamical coherence loss of such state in the absence of dissipation is reversible and can in principle be observed. We show how this picture is modified due to the presence of the environmental couplings. Analytical expressions for the experimental conditional probabilities and the linear entropy are given. We conclude that th…
Microwave pulses are used ubiquitously to control and measure qubits fabricated on superconducting circuits. Due to continual environmental coupling, the qubits undergo decoherence both when it is free and during its interaction with the microwave pulse. As quantum logic gates are executed through pulse-qubit interaction, we study theoretically the decoherence-induced effects during the interaction, especially the variations of the pulse, under a dissipative environment with linear spectral distribution. We find that a transmissible pulse of finite width adopts an asymmetric multi-hump shape, …
We address dissipation effects on the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of an ensemble of spins-1/2 coupled via an Ising interaction. Dissipation is modeled by a (ohmic) bath of harmonic oscillators at zero temperature and correspond either to the sound modes of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensate or to the zero-point fluctuations of a long transmission line. We consider the dimer comprising two spins and the quantum Ising chain with long-range interactions, and develop a (mathematically and numerically) exact stochastic approach to address non-equilibrium protocols in the presen…
The discovery of the intriguing phenomenon that certain kinds of quantum correlations remain impervious to noise up to a specific point in time and then suddenly decay, has generated immense recent interest. We exploit dynamical decoupling sequences to prolong the persistence of time-invariant quantum discord in a system of two NMR qubits decohering in independent dephasing environments. We experimentally prepare two-qubit Bell-diagonal quantum states that interact with individual dephasing channels and demonstrate the effect of dynamical decoupling on the preservation of both quantum and clas…
The nonequilibrium dynamics of a small quantum system coupled to a dissipative environment is studied. We show that (1) the oscillatory dynamics close to a coherent-to-incoherent transition is surprisingly different from the one of the classical damped harmonic oscillator and that (2) non-markovian memory plays a prominent role in the time evolution after a quantum quench.
We calculate the transmission spectra of a flux qubit coupled to a dissipative resonator in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Such a qubit-oscillator system constitutes the building block of superconducting circuit QED platforms. The calculated transmission of a weak probe field quantifies the response of the qubit, in frequency domain, under the sole influence of the oscillator and of its dissipative environment, an Ohmic heat bath. We find the distinctive features of the qubit-resonator system, namely two-dip structures in the calculated transmission, modified by the presence of the dissipati…
We analyze the performance of holonomic quantum gates in semi-conductor quantum dots, driven by ultrafast lasers, under the effect of a dissipative environment. In agreement with the standard practice, the environment is modeled as a thermal bath of oscillators linearly coupled with the excitonic states of the quantum dot. Standard techniques of quantum dissipation make the problem amenable to a numerical treatment and allow to determine the fidelity (the common gate-performance estimator), as a function of all the relevant physical parameters. As a consequence of our analysis, we show that, b…
A primary motivation for studying topological matter regards the protection of topological order from its environment. In this work, we study a topological emitter array coupled to an electromagnetic environment. The photon-emitter coupling produces nonlocal interactions between emitters. Using periodic boundary conditions for all ranges of environment-induced interactions, the chiral symmetry inherent to the emitter array is preserved. This chiral symmetry protects the Hamiltonian, and induces parity in the Lindblad operator. A topological phase transition occurs at a critical photon-emitter …
We consider a model of two qubits dissipating into both local and global environments (generally at non-zero temperatures), with the possibility of interpolating between purely local dissipation and purely global one. The corresponding dissipative dynamical map is characterized in terms of its Kraus operators focusing on the stationary regime. We then determine conditions under which entanglement can be induced by the action of such a map. It results (rather counterintuitively) that in order to have entanglement in the presence of local environment, this latter must be at nonzero temperature.
We study microwave-driven cooling in a superconducting flux qubit subjected to environment noises. For the weak decoherence, our analytical results agree well with the experimental observations near the degeneracy point and show that the microwave amplitude for optimal cooling should depend linearly on the dc flux detuning. With the decoherence increasing, more vibrational degrees of freedom couple in, making the ordinary cooling method less effective or even fail. We propose an improved cooling method, which can eliminate the perturbation of additional vibrational degrees of freedom hence kee…
We study the reduced dynamics of interacting spins, each coupled to its own bath of bosons. We derive the solution in analytic form in the white-noise limit and analyze the rich behaviors in diverse limits ranging from weak coupling and/or low temperature to strong coupling and/or high temperature. We also view the one spin as being coupled to a spin-boson environment and consider the regimes in which it is effectively nonlinear, and in which it can be regarded as a resonant bosonic environment.
A comparison of different master equations for driven-dissipative dynamics in composite quantum systems: Dispersive readout in structured electromagnetic environments
We analyze the effect of a dissipative bosonic environment on the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) level crossing model by using a microscopic approach to derive the relevant master equation. For an environment at zero temperature and weak dissipation our microscopic approach confirms the independence of the survival probability on the decay rate that has been predicted earlier by the simple phenomenological LZSM model. For strong decay the microscopic approach predicts a notable increase of the survival probability, which signals dynamical decoupling of the initial state. Unlike the p…
The key feature of a quantum spin coupled to a harmonic bath---a model dissipative quantum system---is competition between oscillator potential energy and spin tunneling rate. We show that these opposing tendencies cause environmental entanglement through superpositions of adiabatic and antiadiabatic oscillator states, which then stabilizes the spin coherence against strong dissipation. This insight motivates a fast-converging variational coherent-state expansion for the many-body ground state of the spin-boson model, which we substantiate via numerical quantum tomography.
A new minimal coupling method is introduced. A general dissipative quantum system is investigated consistently and systematically. Some coupling functions describing the interaction between the system and the environment are introduced. Based on coupling functions, some susceptibility functions are attributed to the environment explecitly. Transition probabilities relating the way energy flows from the system to the environment are calculated and the energy conservation is explecitly examined. This new formalism is generalized to the dissipative scalar and vector field theories along the ideas…
Quantum metrology pursues high-precision measurements of physical quantities by using quantum resources. However, the decoherence generally hinders its performance. Previous work found that the metrological error tends to diverge in the long-encoding-time regime due to the Born-Markovian approximate decoherence, which is called the no-go theorem of noisy quantum metrology. Here we propose a Gaussian quantum metrology scheme using bimodal quantized optical fields as the quantum probe. It achieves the precision of a sub-Heisenberg limit in the ideal case. However, the Markovian decoherence cause…

In our former contribution [Ann. Phys. 360 (2015) 44], we have shown the sensitivity to the choice of initial conditions in the evolution of Gaussian wave packets via the nonlinear Riccati equation. The formalism developed in the previous work is extended to effective approaches for the description of dissipative quantum systems. By means of simple examples we show the effects of the environment on the quantum uncertainties, correlation function, quantum energy contribution and tunneling currents. We prove that the environmental parameter $γ$ is strongly related with the sensitivity to the cho…
We have studied the dynamics of quantum correlations such as entanglement, Bell-nonlocality and quantum discord between identical as well as unidentical atoms interacting with a single-mode cavity field and subject to cavity decay. The effect of single atom detuning, cavity decay rate and initial preparation of the atoms on the corresponding correlation measures have been investigated. It is found that even under strong dissipation, time evolution can create high quantum discord while entanglement and Bell nonlocality stay zero for an initially separable state. Quantum discord increases while …
