The BB84 and B92 protocols based on polarization coding are usually used in free-space quantum key distribution. Polarization tracking technique is one of the key techniques in the satellite quantum key distribution. Because the photon polarization state will be changed as a result of the satellite movement, both the transmitter and receiver need to have the ability to track the polarization orientation variation to accomplish the quantum cryptography protocols. In this paper, the polarization tracking principles are analyzed based on Faraday effect and the half-wave plate. The transforms of six photon polarization states in three conjugative bases are given and the quantum key coding principles based on the polarization tracking are analyzed for the BB84 and B92 protocols.
Polarization maintenance is a key technology for free-space quantum communication. In this paper, we describe a polarization maintenance design of a transmitting antenna with an average polarization extinction ratio of 887 : 1 by a local test. We implemented a feasible polarization-compensation scheme for satellite motions that has a polarization fidelity more than 0.995. Finally, we distribute entanglement to a satellite from ground for the first time with a violation of Bell inequality by 2.312+-0.096.
To reduce the influence of random channel polarization variation, especially fast polarization perturbation, for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems, a simple and fast polarization tracking algorithm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The algorithm is implemented by an orthogonal pilot tone scheme, one of the pilot tones is used for estimating the polarization rotation angle, and the other one is used for compensating the polarization perturbation introduced phase noise. Meanwhile, residual effects are compensated precisely with the help of a real-valued FIR …
Calibration of the polarization basis between the transmitter and receiver is an important task in quantum key distribution (QKD). An effective polarization-basis tracking scheme will decrease the quantum bit error rate (QBER) and improve the efficiency of a polarization encoding QKD system. In this paper, we proposed a polarization-basis tracking scheme using only unveiled sifted key bits while performing error correction by legitimate users, rather than introducing additional reference light or interrupting the transmission of quantum signals. A polarization-encoding fiber BB84 QKD prototype…
Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a cryptographic protocol to enable two parties to share a secure key string, which can be used in one-time pad cryptosystem. There has been an ongoing surge of interest in implementing long-haul photonic-implementation of QKD protocols. However, the endeavour is challenging in many aspects. In particular, one of the major challenges is the polarization degree of freedom of single-photons getting affected while transmission through optical fibres, or atmospheric turbulence. Conventionally, an active feedback-based mechanism is employed to achieve real-time pola…
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) allows distant parties to exchange cryptographic keys with unconditional security by encoding information on the degrees of freedom of photons. Polarization encoding has been extensively used in QKD implementations along free-space, optical fiber and satellite-based links. However, the polarization encoders used in such implementations are unstable, expensive, complex and can even exhibit side-channels that undermine the security of the implemented protocol. Here we propose a self-compensating polarization encoder based on a Lithium Niobate phase modulator inside…
To implement the BB84 decoy-state quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol over a lossy ground-satellite quantum uplink requires a source that has high repetition rate of short laser pulses, long term stability, and no phase correlations between pulses. We present a new type of telecom optical polarization and amplitude modulator, based on a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer configuration, coupled to a polarization-preserving sum-frequency generation (SFG) optical setup, generating 532 nm photons with modulated polarization and amplitude states. The weak coherent pulses produced by SFG meet …
Quantum measurements that use the entangled photons' polarization to encode quantum information require calibration and alignment of the measurement bases between spatially separate observers. Because of the changing birefringence in optical fibers arising from temperature fluctuations or external mechanical vibrations, the polarization state at the end of a fiber channel is unpredictable and time-varying. Polarization tracking and stabilization methods originally developed for classical optical communications cannot be applied to polarization-entangled photons, where the separately detected p…
Global quantum networks for secure communication can be realised using large fleets of satellites distributing entangled photon-pairs between ground-based nodes. Because the cost of a satellite depends on its size, the smallest satellites will be most cost-effective. This paper describes a miniaturised, polarization entangled, photon-pair source operating on board a nano-satellite. The source violates Bell's inequality with a CHSH parameter of 2.6 $\pm$ 0.06. This source can be combined with optical link technologies to enable future quantum communication nano-satellite missions.
Fiber-based quantum communication networks are currently limited without quantum repeaters. Satellite-based quantum links have been proposed to extend the network domain. We have developed a quantum communication system, suitable for realistic satellite-to-ground communication. With this system, we have executed an entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol developed by Bennett, Brassard, and Mermin in 1992 (BBM92), achieving quantum bit error rates (QBER) below 2$\%$ in all bases. More importantly, we demonstrate low QBER execution of a higher dimensional hyperentanglement-bas…
We present a complete optoelectronic unit for polarization visualization, switching and control. The system is based on an FPGA unit and comprises: an acquisition unit containing an analog polarimeter and digital-to-analog converters, an FPGA capable of implementing an optimal algorithm for three-stage arbitrary polarization tracking, and an electronic driver with analog-to-digital converters capable of interfacing with Lithium-Niobate-based Polarization Controllers. The results, determined via simulation of real-parameter devices, show that fast polarization switch is achievable.

Recent rapid growth in the number of satellite-constellation programs for remote sensing and communications, thanks to the availability of small-size and low-cost satellites, provides impetus for high capacity laser communication (lasercom) in space. Quantum communication can enhance the overall performance of lasercom, and also enables intrinsically hack-proof secure communication known as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). Here, we report a quantum communication experiment between a micro-satellite (48 kg and 50 cm cube) in a low earth orbit and a ground station with single-photon counters. Non…
Microwave photons have become very important qubits in quantum communication as the first quantum satellite has been launched successfully. Therefore, it is a necessary and meaningful task for ensuring the high security and efficiency of microwave-based quantum communication in practice. Here, we present an original polarization entanglement purification protocol for nonlocal microwave photons based on the cross-Kerr effect in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED). Our protocol can solve the problem that the purity of maximally entangled states used for constructing quantum channels will decre…
In this paper we present a novel analysis of the feasibility of quantum key distribution between a LEO satellite and a ground station. First of all, we study signal propagation through a turbulent atmosphere for uplinks and downlinks, discussing the contribution of beam spreading and beam wandering. Then we introduce a model for the background noise of the channel during night-time and day-time, calculating the signal-to-noise ratio for different configurations. We also discuss the expected error-rate due to imperfect polarization-compensation in the channel. Finally, we calculate the expected…
Quantum communication has been rapidly developed due to its unconditional security and successfully implemented through optical fibers and free-space air in experiment. To build a complete quantum communication network involving satellites in space and submersibles in ocean, underwater quantum channel has been investigated in both theory and experiment. However, the question of whether the polarization encoded qubit can survive through a long-distance and high-loss underwater channel, which is considered as the restricted area for satellite-borne radio waves, still remains. Here, we experiment…
