The phase space $S\times Z$ for a particle on a circle is considered. Displacement operators in this phase space are introduced and their properties are studied. Wigner and Weyl functions in this context are also considered and their physical interpretation and properties are discussed. All results are compared and contrasted with the corresponding ones for the harmonic oscillator in the $R \times R$ phase space.
The coherent states for the quantum particle on the circle are introduced. The Bargmann representation within the actual treatment provides the representation of the algebra $[\hat J,U]=U$, where $U$ is unitary, which is a direct consequence of the Heisenberg algebra $[\hat ϕ, \hat J]=i$, but it is more adequate for the study of the circlular motion.
The Dirac method is used to analyze the classical and quantum dynamics of a particle constrained on a circle. The method of Lagrange multipliers is scrutinized, in particular in relation to the quantization procedure. Ordering problems are tackled and solved by requiring the hermiticity of some operators. The presence of an additional term in the quantum Hamiltonian is discussed.
It is demonstrated that in contrast to the well-known case with a quantum particle moving freely in a real line, the wave packets corresponding to the coherent states for a free quantum particle on a circle do not spread but develop periodically in time. The discontinuous changes during the course of time in the phase representing the position of a particle can be interpreted as the quantum jumps on a circle.
We propose a variation of the quantum walk on a circle in phase space by conjoining the Hadamard coin flip with simultaneous displacement of the walker's location in phase space and show that this generalization is a proper quantum walk albeit over multiple concentric circles in phase instead of just over one circle. We motivate the conjoining of Hadamard and displacement operations by showing that the Jaynes-Cummings model for coin+walker approximately yields this description in the dispersive limit. The quantum walk signature is evident in the phase distribution of the walker provided that a…
We study a particle propagation on a circle in the presence of a point interaction. We show that the one-particle Feynman kernel can be written into the sum of reflected and transmitted trajectories which are weighted by the elements of the n-th power of the scattering matrix evaluated on a line with a point interaction. As a by-product we find three-parameter family of trace formulae as a generalization of the Poisson summation formula.
A generalized Weyl quantization formalism for a particle on the circle investigated in \cite{1} is developed. A Wigner function for the state $\hat{\varrho}$ and the kernel $\mathcal{K}$ for a particle on the circle is defined and its properties are analyzed. Then it is shown how this Wigner function can be easily modified to give the number-phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Some examples of such number-phase Wigner function are considered.
We show how a quantum walk can be implemented for the first time in a quantum quincunx created via superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED), and how interpolation from quantum to random walk is implemented by controllable decoherence using a two resonator system. Direct control over the coin qubit is difficult to achieve in either cavity or circuit QED, but we show that a Hadamard coin flip can be effected via direct driving of the cavity, with the result that the walker jumps between circles in phase space but still exhibits quantum walk behavior over 15 steps.
We discuss some basic tools for an analysis of one-dimensionalquantum systems defined on a cyclic coordinate space. The basic features of the generalized coherent states, the complexifier coherent states are reviewed. These states are then used to define the corresponding (quasi)densities in phase space. The properties of these generalized Husimi distributions are discussed, in particular their zeros.Furthermore, the use of the complexifier coherent states for a semiclassical analysis is demonstrated by deriving a semiclassical coherent state propagator in phase space.
The uncertainty relations for the position and momentum of a quantum particle on a circle are identified minimized by the corresponding coherent states. The sqeezed states in the case of the circular motion are introduced and discussed in the context of the uncertainty relations.
A method is developed to construct the solutions of one and many variable, linear differential equations of arbitrary order. Using this, the $N$-particle Sutherland model, with pair-wise inverse sine-square interactions among the particles, is shown to be equivalent to free particles on a circle. Applicability of our method to many other few and many-body problems is also illustrated.
The quantum dynamics of a free particle on a circle with point interaction is described by a U(2) family of self-adjoint Hamiltonians. We provide a classification of the family by introducing a number of subfamilies and thereby analyze the spectral structure in detail. We find that the spectrum depends on a subset of U(2) parameters rather than the entire U(2) needed for the Hamiltonians, and that in particular there exists a subfamily in U(2) where the spectrum becomes parameter-independent. We also show that, in some specific cases, the WKB semiclassical approximation becomes exact (modulo p…
New position uncertainty (delocalization) measures for a particle on the circle are proposed and illustrated on several examples, where the previous measures (based on 2pi-periodic position operators) appear to be unsatisfactory. The new measures are suitably constructed using the standard multiplication angle operator variances. They are shown to depend solely on the state of the particle and to obey uncertainty relations of the Schroedinger-Robertson type.
We propose an implementation of a quantum walk on a circle on an optomechanical system by encoding the walker on the phase space of a radiation field and the coin on a two-level state of a mechanical resonator. The dynamics of the system is obtained by applying Suzuki-Trotter decomposition. We numerically show that the system displays typical behaviors of quantum walks, namely, the probability distribution evolves ballistically and the standard deviation of the phase distribution is linearly proportional to the number of steps. We also analyze the effects of decoherence by using the phase damp…
The iterative quantum phase estimation algorithm, applied to calculating the ground state energies of quantum chemical systems, is theoretically appealing in its wide scope of being able to handle both weakly and strongly correlated regimes. However, the goodness of the initial state that is sent as an input to the algorithm could strongly decide the quality of the results obtained. In this work, we generate the initial state by using the classical-quantum hybrid variational quantum eigensolver algorithm with unitary coupled cluster ansatz. We apply the procedure to obtain the ground state ene…
We present a possible construction of coherent states on the unit circle as configuration space. In our approach the phase space is the product Z x S^1. Because of the duality of canonical coordinates and momenta, i.e. the angular variable and the integers, this formulation can also be interpreted as coherent states over an infinite periodic chain. For the construction we use the analogy with our quantization over a finite periodic chain where the phase space was Z_M x Z_M. Properties of the coherent states constructed in this way are studied and the coherent states are shown to satisfy the re…
Though not so widely appreciated in the literature, supersymmetric quantum mechanics provides an ideal playground for studying non-Abelian geometric phase, because supersymmetry always guarantees degeneracies in energy levels. In this paper we first present a simple supersymmetric model for a free particle on a circle with point-like interactions that exhibits $\mathscr{N} = 2$ supersymmetry and doubly degenerate energy levels. We then show that Berry's connection in this model is given by the Wu-Yang-like magnetic monopole in SU(2) Yang-Mills gauge theory. This article is largely based on our…
For a charged particle in a homogeneous magnetic field, we construct stationary squeezed states which are eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian and the non-Hermitian operator $\hat{X}_Φ = \hat{X} \cos Φ+ \hat{Y} \sin Φ$, $\hat{X}$ and $\hat{Y}$ being the coordinates of the Larmor circle center and $Φ$ is a complex parameter. In the family of the squeezed states, the quantum uncertainty in the Larmor circle position is minimal. The wave functions of the squeezed states in the coordinate representation are found and their properties are discussed. Also, for arbitrary gauge of the vector potential we…
The relation between quantum phase transitions, entanglement, and geometric phases is investigated with a system of two qubits with XY type interaction. A seam of level crossings of the system is a circle in parameter space of the anisotropic coupling and the transverse magnetic field, which is identical to the disorder line of an one-dimensional XY model. The entanglement of the ground state changes abruptly as the parameters vary across the circle except specific points crossing to the straight line of the zero magnetic field. At those points the entanglement does not change but the ground s…
Revivals of the coherent states of a deformed, adiabatically and cyclically varying oscillator Hamiltonian are examined. The revival time distribution is exactly that of Poincaré recurrences for a rotation map: only three distinct revival times can occur, with specified weights. A link is thus established between quantum revivals and recurrences in a coarse-grained discrete-time dynamical system.
Using the orthodox Weyl -- Wigner -- Stratonovich -- Cohen (WWSC) quantization rule we construct a time -- of -- arrival operator for a free particle on the circle. It is shown that this operator is self -- adjoint but the careful analysis of its properties suggests that it cannot represent a `physical' time -- of -- arrival observable. The problem of a time -- of -- arrival observable for the `waiting screen' is also considered. A method of avoiding the quantum Zeno effect is proposed and the positive operator valued measure (POV -- measure) or the generalized positive operator valued measure…
We complete our previous(1, 2) demonstration that there is a family of new solutions to the photon and Dirac equations using spatial and temporal circles and four-vector behaviour of the Dirac bispinor. We analyse one solution for a bound state, which is equivalent to the attractive two-body interaction between a charged point particle and a second, which remains at rest. We show this yields energy and angular momentum eigenvalues that are identical to those found by the usual method of solving of the Dirac equation,(4) including fine structure. We complete our previous derivation(3) of QED fr…
We apply the quantization scheme introduced in [arXiv:1204.2870] to a particle on a circle. We find that the quantum action functional restricted to appropriate coherent states can be expressed as the classical action plus $\hbar$-corrections. This result extends the examples presented in the cited paper.
We present a possible construction of coherent states on the unit circle as configuration space. Our approach is based on Borel quantizations on S^1 including the Aharonov-Bohm type quantum description. The coherent states are constructed by Perelomov's method as group related coherent states generated by Weyl operators on the quantum phase space Z x S^1. Because of the duality of canonical coordinates and momenta, i.e. the angular variable and the integers, this formulation can also be interpreted as coherent states over an infinite periodic chain. For the construction we use the analogy with…
Given a fully extended topological quantum field theory, the 'crossing with the circle' conditions establish that the dimension, or categorification thereof, of the quantum invariant assigned to a closed $k$-manifold $Σ$ is equivalent to that assigned to the ($k$+1)-manifold $Σ\times \mathbb S^1$. We compute in this manuscript these conditions for the 4-3-2-1 Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. In the context of the lattice Hamiltonian realisation of the theory, the quantum invariants assigned to the circle and the torus encode the defect open string-like and bulk loop-like excitations, respectively. The…
We exactly diagonalize the finite-size XY model with periodic boundary conditions and analytically determine the ground state energy. We show that there are two types of fermions: singles and pairs, whose dispersion relations have a completely arbitrary gauge-dependent sign. It follows that the ground state is determined by a competition between the vacuum states (with a suitable gauge) of two parity sectors. We finally exhibit some points in finite size systems that forerun criticality. They are associated to single Bogoliubov fermions and to the level crossings between physical and unphysica…
We investigate a quantum many-body system with particles moving on a circle and subject to two-body and three-body potentials. In this new class of models, that extrapolates from the celebrated Calogero-Sutherland model and a system with interactions among nearest and next-to-nearest neighbors, the interactions can be tuned as a function of range. We determine the exact ground state energy and wavefunction and obtain a part of the excitation spectrum.
We investigate the spectral and symmetry properties of a quantum particle moving on a circle with a pointlike singularity (or point interaction). We find that, within the U(2) family of the quantum mechanically allowed distinct singularities, a U(1) equivalence (of duality-type) exists, and accordingly the space of distinct spectra is U(1) x [SU(2)/U(1)], topologically a filled torus. We explore the relationship of special subfamilies of the U(2) family to corresponding symmetries, and identify the singularities that admit an N = 2 supersymmetry. Subfamilies that are distinguished in the spect…
For a system of N identical particles in a random pure state, there is a threshold k_0 = k_0(N) ~ N/5 such that two subsystems of k particles each typically share entanglement if k > k_0, and typically do not share entanglement if k < k_0. By "random" we mean here "uniformly distributed on the sphere of the corresponding Hilbert space." The analogous phase transition for the positive partial transpose (PPT) property can be described even more precisely. For example, for N qubits the two subsystems of size k are typically in a PPT state if k < k_1 := N/4 - 1/2, and typically in a non-PPT state …
