Simple examples of position-momentum correlated Gaussian free-particle wavepackets in one-dimension with the general form of the time-dependent spread in position
We provide simple examples of closed-form Gaussian wavepacket solutions of the free-particle Schrodinger equation in one dimension which exhibit the most general form of the time-dependent spread in position, namely (Delta x_t)^2 = (Delta x_0)^2 + At + (Delta p_0)^2t^2/m^2, where A = <(xhat - <xhat>_0)(phat - <phat>_0) + (phat - <phat>_0)(xhat - <xhat>_0)>_0 contains information on the position-momentum correlation structure of the initial wave packet. We exhibit straightforward examples corresponding to squeezed states, as well as quasi-classical cases, for which A < 0 so that the position spread can (at least initially) decrease in time because of such correlations. We discuss how the initial correlations in these examples can be dynamically generated (at least conceptually) in various bound state systems. Finally, we focus on providing different ways of visualizing the x-p correlations present in these cases, including the time-dependent distribution of kinetic energy and the use of the Wigner quasi-probability distribution. We discuss similar results, both for the time-dependent Delta x_t and special correlated solutions, for the case of a particle subject to a uniform force.
We investigate possible ways in which a quantum wavepacket spreads. We show that in a general class of double kicked rotor systems, a wavepacket may undergo superballistic spreading; i.e., its variance increases as the cubic of time. The conditions for the observed superballistic spreading and two related characteristic time scales are studied. Our results suggest that the symmetry of the studied model and whether it is a Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser system are crucial to its wavepacket spreading behavior. Our study also sheds new light on the exponential wavepacket spreading phenomenon previously …
We study the unidirectional transport of two-particle quantum wavepackets in a regular one-dimensional lattice. We show that the bound-pair state component behaves differently from unbound states when subjected to an external pulsed electric field. Thus, strongly entangled particles exhibit a quite distinct dynamics when compared to a single particle system. With respect to centroid motion, our numerical results are corroborated with an analytical expression obtained using a semi-classical approach. The wavefunction profile reveals that the particle-particle interaction induces the splitting o…
Free-Electron Bound-Electron Resonant Interaction (FEBERI) is the resonant inelastic interaction of periodically density-bunched free electrons with a quantum two level system. We present a comprehensive relativistic quantum mechanical theory for this interaction in a model in which the electrons are represented as quantum electron wavepackets (QEW). The analysis reveals the wave-particle duality nature of the QEW, delineating the point-particle-like and wave-like interaction regimes, and manifesting the physical reality of the wavefunction dimensions and its density modulation characteristics…
We find the laws for the spreading of the spatial widths (parallel and transverse to the direction of average motion) of the relativistic position probability density for a massive, spinless particle. We find that when the momentum width of the wavepacket is small compared to the average momentum, there is a long time over which spreading is minimal. This result may be useful in particle accelerator design. We also demonstrate the Lorentz contraction of a wavepacket using relativistic probability amplitudes.
The dynamics of an initially localized wavepacket is studied for the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential, where the nonlinearity term is |ψ|^p*ψand "p" is arbitrary. Mainly short times for which the numerical calculations can be performed accurately are considered. Long time calculations are presented as well. In particular the subdiffusive behavior where the average second moment of the wavepacket is of the form <m_{2}>~t^a is computed. Contrary to former heuristic arguments, no evidence for any critical behavior as function of "p" is found. The properties of α…
Wavepackets in quantum mechanics spread and the Universe in cosmology expands. We discuss a formalism where the two effects can be unified. The basic assumption is that the Universe is determined by a unitarily evolving wavepacket defined on space-time. Space-time is static but the Universe is dynamic. Spreading analogous to expansion known from observational cosmology is obtained if one regards time evolution as a discrete process with probabilities of jumps determined by a variational principle employing Kolmogorov-Nagumo-Rényi averages. The choice of the Rényi calculus implies that the form…
Experiments involving single or few elementary particles are completely described by Quantum Mechanics. Notwithstanding the success of that quantitative description, various aspects of observations, as nonlocality and the statistical randomness of results, remain as mysterious properties apart from the quantum theory, and they are attributed to the strangeness of the microscopic world. Here we restart from the fundamental relations of uncertainty to reformulate the probability law of Born including the temporal variable. Considering that both the spatial and the temporal variables play a symme…
We investigate the short-, medium-, and long-term time dependence of wave packets in the infinite square well. In addition to emphasizing the appearance of wave packet revivals, i.e., situations where a spreading wave packet reforms with close to its initial shape and width, we also examine in detail the approach to the collapsed phase where the position-space probability density is almost uniformly spread over the well. We focus on visualizing these phenomena in both position- and momentum-space as well as by following the time-dependent expectation values of and uncertainties in position and…
We present a fully quantum model for the excitation of a bound electron based on the free-electron bound-electron resonant interaction (FEBERI) scheme. The bound electron is modeled as a quantum two-level system (TLS) at any initial quantum (qubit) state, and the free electron is presented as a pre-shaped quantum electron wavepacket (QEW). In the case that the QEW is short or modulated at optical frequency, the TLS quantum state may be coherently controlled with multiple modulation-correlated QEWs. For this case, we derive the transition probability of the TLS due to interaction with a multi-p…
We investigate wavepacket solutions for time-dependent Schoedinger equation in the presence of an exponentially decaying potential. Assuming for travelling wave solutions the phase to be a linear combination of the space and time coordinates, we obtain two distinct wavepacket solutions for the Schroedinger equation. The wavepackets counterpropagate in space at a constant velocity without any distortion or spreading thus retain their initial form at arbitrarily large distances.
Accelerating non-spreading wavepackets in nonrelativistic free particle system, with probability distribution having an Airy function profile, were discovered by Berry and Balazs (1979), and have been subsequently realised in several optical experiments. It is shown that these wavepackets are actually Perelomov coherent states. It is found that the Galilean invariance of the Schrodinger equation plays a key role in making these states unique and giving rise to their unusual propagation properties.
We show that initially localized and uncorrelated two-particles quantum wavepackets evolving in a one-dimensional discrete lattice become strongly entangled while drifting under the action of an harmonic AC field resonant with doubled Bloch oscillations promoted by a static DC field. Although partial entanglement is achieved when the AC field is resonant with the single-particle Bloch oscillations, it is strongly limited by the survival of anti-correlated unbounded states. We further show that the phase dependence of the wavepacket centroid velocity is similar to the semiclassical behavior dep…
We perform a finite-time scaling analysis over the detrapping point of a three-state quantum walk on the line. The coin operator is parameterized by $ρ$ that controls the wavepacket spreading velocity. The input state prepared at the origin is set as symmetric linear combination of two eigenstates of the coin operator with a characteristic mixing angle $θ$, one of them being the component that results in full spreading occurring at $θ_c(ρ)$ for which no fraction of the wavepacket remains trapped near the initial position. We show that relevant quantities such as the survival probability and th…
Here we present a semiclassical analysis of spontaneous and stimulated radiative emission from unmodulated and optically-modulated electron quantum wavepackets. We show that the radiative emission/absorption and corresponding deceleration/acceleration of the wavepackets depend on the controllable 'history-dependent' wavepacket size. The characteristics of the radiative interaction when a wavepacket of size (duration) is short relative to the radiation wavelength, are close to the predictions of the classical point-particle modeling. On the other hand, in the long-sized wavepacket limit, the in…
We introduce and analyze the physics of "driving reversal" experiments. These are prototype wavepacket dynamics scenarios probing quantum irreversibility. Unlike the mostly hypothetical "time reversal" concept, a "driving reversal" scenario can be realized in a laboratory experiment, and is relevant to the theory of quantum dissipation. We study both the energy spreading and the survival probability in such experiments. We also introduce and study the "compensation time" (time of maximum return) in such a scenario. Extensive effort is devoted to figuring out the capability of either Linear Res…
On the basis of the full analytical solution of the overall unitary dynamics, the time evolution of entanglement is studied in a simple bipartite model system evolving unitarily from a pure initial state. The system consists of two particles in one spacial dimension bound by harmonic forces and having its free center of mass initially localized in space in a minimum uncertainty wave packet. The existence of such initial states in which the bound particles are not entangled is pointed out. The entanglement of the two particles is shown to be independent of the wavepacket mean momentum, and to i…
We challenge the widespread belief, originated by Newton and Wigner (Rev. Mod. Phys, 21, 400 (1949)) that the incorporation of special relativity into quantum mechanics implies that a massive particle cannot be localized within an arbitrarily small spatial extent, that there is a minimum width approximately equal to the Compton wavelength. Our argument is in four parts. First, the scalar function used by Newton and Wigner as a measure of localization is not a position probability amplitude. The correct relativistic position probability amplitude becomes a delta function for a state vector loca…
Quantum collision models are receiving increasing attention as they describe many nontrivial phenomena in dynamics of open quantum systems. In a general scenario of both fundamental and practical interest, a quantum system repeatedly interacts with individual particles or modes forming a correlated and structured reservoir; however, classical and quantum environment correlations greatly complicate the calculation and interpretation of the system dynamics. Here we propose an exact solution to this problem based on the tensor network formalism. We find a natural Markovian embedding for the syste…
We study the spreading of correlations in the Bose-Hubbard chain, using the time-dependent matrix-product state approach. In both the superfluid and the Mott-insulator phases, we find that the time-dependent correlation functions generally display a universal twofold cone structure characterized by two distinct velocities. The latter are related to different microscopic properties of the system and provide useful information on the excitation spectrum. The twofold spreading of correlations has profound implications on experimental observations that are discussed.
Quantum correlations of observables for two particle states have demonstrated the nonlocal character of the quantum mechanics. However nonlocality can be exhibited even for noncommuting observables of a single particle system. In this paper we show nonlocality of position-momentum correlations of a single particle in the double-slit experiment modeled by an initially correlated Gaussian wavepacket. The positivity or negativity of the Wigner function for the state of the particle at the detection screen is related with the $σ_{xp}$ covariances. A Bell's inequality is constructed from the Wigner…
We address memory effects and diffusive properties of a continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional percolation lattice affected by spatially correlated random telegraph noise. In particular, by introducing spatially correlated time-dependent fluctuations in nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes, we describe random domains characterized by global noise. The resulting open dynamics of the walker is then unraveled by an ensemble average over all the noise realizations. Our results show that time-dependent noise assisted by spatial correlations leads to strong memory effects in the walker dyn…

We study the spreading of a quantum-mechanical wavepacket in a one-dimensional tight-binding model with a noisy potential, and analyze the emergence of classical diffusion from the quantum dynamics due to decoherence. We consider a finite correlation time of the noisy environment, and treat the system by utilizing the separation of fast (dephasing) and slow (diffusion) processes. We show that classical diffusive behavior emerges at long times, and we calculate analytically the dependence of the classical diffusion coefficient on the noise magnitude and correlation time. This method provides a …
We investigate the single-particle time evolution and two-particle quantum correlations in a one-dimensional $N$-site lattice with a site-dependent nearest neighbor tunneling function $t_α(k)=t_0[k(N-k)]^{α/2}$. Since the bandwidth and the energy levels spacings for such a lattice both depend upon $α$, we show that the observable properties of a wavepacket, such as its spread and the relative phases of its constitutents, vary dramatically as $α$ is varied from positive to negative values. We also find that the quantum correlations are exquisitely sensitive to the form of the tunneling function…
