We report an experiment to generate maximally entangled states of D-dimensional quantum systems, qudits, by using transverse spatial correlations of two parametric down-converted photons. Apertures with D-slits in the arms of the twin fotons define the qudit space. By manipulating the pump beam correctly the twin photons will pass only by symmetrically opposite slits, generating entangled states between these differents paths. Experimental results for qudits with D=4 and D=8 are shown. We demonstrate that the generated states are entangled states.
Known quantum pure states of a qudit can be remotely prepared onto a group of particles of qubits exactly or probabilistically with the aid of two-level Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen states. We present a protocol for such kind of remote state preparation. We are mainly focused on the remote preparation of the ensembles of equatorial states and those of states in real Hilbert space. In particular, a kind of states of qudits in real Hilbert space have been shown to be remotely prepared in faith without the limitation of the input space dimension.
We study the conditions when mixtures of entangled pure states with maximally mixed one-qudit reduced density matrices remain entangled. We found that the resulting mixed state remains entangled when the number of entangled pure states to be mixed is less than or equal to the dimension of the pure states. For the latter case of mixing a number of pure states equal to their dimension, we found that the mixed state is entangled provided that the entangled pure states to be mixed are not equally weighted. We also found that one can restrict the set of pure states that one can mix from in order to…
We consider the separability of various joint states of D-dimensional quantum systems, which we call "qudits." We derive two main results: (i) the separability condition for a two-qudit state that is a mixture of the maximally mixed state and a maximally entangled state; (ii) lower and upper bounds on the size of the neighorhood of separable states surrounding the maximally mixed state for N qudits.
Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states are multipartite entangled states that are maximally entangled for any possible bipartition. In this paper, we study the description of AME states within the graph state formalism. The graphical representation provides an intuitive framework to visualize the entanglement in graph states, which makes them a natural candidate to describe AME states. We show two different methods of determining bipartite entanglement in graph states and use them to define various AME graph states. We further show that AME graph states exist for all number of parties, an…
A protocol for teleporting two qudits simultaneously in opposite directions using a single pair of maximally entangled qudits is presented. This procedure works provided that the product of dimensions of the two qudits to be teleported does not exceed the dimension of the individual qudits in the maximally entangled pair.
We introduce a general method of gluing multi-partite states and show that entanglement swapping is a special class of a wider range of gluing operations. The gluing operation of two m and n qudit states consists of an entangling operation on two given qudits of the the two states followed by operations of measurements of the two qudits in the computational basis. Depending on how many qudits (two, one or zero) we measure, we have three classes of gluing operation, resulting respectively in m+n-2, m+n-1 or m+n qudit states. Entanglement swapping belongs to the first class and has been widely s…
It is known that if the shared resource is a maximally entangled state then it is possible to teleport an unknown state with unit fidelity and unit probability. However, if the shared resource is a non-maximally entangled state then one has to follow a probabilistic scheme where one can teleport a qubit with unit fidelity and non-unit probability. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of using partially entangled states as a resource for quantum teleportation of a qudit. We also give an expression for the probability of successful teleportation of an unknown qudit.
The paper presents general protocols for quantum teleportation between multiparties. It is shown how N parties can teleport N unknown quantum states to M other parties with the use of N+M qudits in the maximally entangled state. It is also shown that a single pair of qudits in the maximally entangled state can be used to teleport two qudits in opposite directions simultaneously.
Under two-party deterministic dense-coding, Alice communicates (perfectly distinguishable) messages to Bob via a qudit from a pair of entangled qudits in pure state |Psi>. If |Psi> represents a maximally entangled state (i.e., each of its Schmidt coefficients is sqrt(1/d)), then Alice can convey to Bob one of d^2 distinct messages. If |Psi> is not maximally entangled, then Ji et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 034307 (2006)] have shown that under the original deterministic dense-coding protocol, in which messages are encoded by unitary operations performed on Alice's qudit, it is impossible to encode d^…
We generalize the entanglement swapping scheme originally proposed for two pairs of qubits to an arbitrary number $q$ of systems composed from an arbitrary number $m_j$ of qudits. Each of the system is supposed to be prepared in a maximally entangled state of $m_j$ qudits, while different systems are not correlated at all. We show that when a set $\sum_{j=1}^q a_j$ particles (from each of the $q$ systems $a_j$ particles are measured) are subjected to a generalized Bell-type measurement, the resulting set of $\sum_{j=1}^q (m_j-a_j)$ particles will collapse into a maximally entangled state.
For every stabiliser $N$-qudit absolutely maximally entangled state, we present a method for determining the stabiliser generators and logical operators of a corresponding quantum error correction code. These codes encode $k$ qudits into $N-k$ qudits, with $k\leq \left \lfloor{N/2} \right \rfloor$, where the local dimension $d$ is prime. We use these methods to analyse the concatenation of such quantum codes and link this procedure to entanglement swapping. Using our techniques, we investigate the spread of quantum information on a tensor network code formerly used as a toy model for the AdS/C…
We propose a generalized Bell inequality for two three-dimensional systems with three settings in each local measurement. It is shown that this inequality is maximally violated if local measurements are configured to be mutually unbiased and a composite state is maximally entangled. This feature is similar to Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for two qubits but is in contrast with the two types of inequalities, Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu and Son-Lee-Kim, for high-dimensional systems. The generalization to aribitrary prime-dimensional systems is discussed.
We construct a large family of Planar Maximally Entangled (PME) states which are a wider class of multi-partite entangled states than Absolutely Maximally Entangled (AME) states. These are states in which any half of the qudits are in a maximally mixed state, provided that they form a connected subset. We show that in contrast to AMEs, PMEs are easier to find and there are various PMEs for any even number of qudits. In particular, while it is known that no AME state of four qubits exists, we show that there are two distinct multi-parameter classes of four qubit PMEs. We also give explicit fami…
We investigate the topological structure of entangled qudits under unitary local operations. Different sectors are identified in the evolution, and their geometrical and topological aspects are analyzed. The geometric phase is explicitly calculated in terms of the concurrence. As a main result, we predict a fractional topological phase for cyclic evolutions in the multiply connected space of maximally entangled states.
We show that a continuous-variable (CV) qudit can be constructed using quasiorthogonal cat states of a bosonic mode, when the phase encoded in each cat state is chosen appropriately. With the constructed CV qudit and the discrete-variable (DV) qudit encoded with Fock states, we propose an approach to generate the hybrid maximally entangled state of a CV qudit and a DV qudit by using two microwave cavities coupled to a superconducting flux qutrit. This proposal relies on the initial preparation of a superposition of Fock states of one cavity and the initial preparation of a cat state of the oth…
For the quantum depolarizing channel with any finite dimension, we compare three schemes for channel identification: unentangled probes, probes maximally entangled with an external ancilla, and maximally entangled probe pairs. This comparison includes cases where the ancilla is itself depolarizing and where the probe is circulated back through the channel before measurement. Compared on the basis of (quantum Fisher) information gained per channel use, we find broadly that entanglement with an ancilla dominates the other two schemes, but only if entanglement is cheap relative to the cost per ch…

We discuss the appearance of fractional topological phases on cyclic evolutions of entangled qudits. The original result reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 240503 (2011) is detailed and extended to qudits of different dimensions. The topological nature of the phase evolution and its restriction to fractional values are related to both the structure of the projective space of states and entanglement. For maximally entangled states of qudits with the same Hilbert space dimension, the fractional geometric phases are the only ones attainable under local SU($d$) operations, an effect that c…
We show the propagation of entangled states of high-dimensional quantum systems. The qudits states were generated using the transverse correlation of the twin photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Their free-space distribution was performed at the laboratory scale and the propagated states maintained a high-fidelity with their original form. The use of entangled qudits allow an increase in the quantity of information that can be transmitted and may also guarantee more privacy for communicating parties. Therefore, studies about propagating entangled states of qudits are im…
Quantum state tomography (QST) is an essential tool for characterizing an unknown quantum state. Recently, QST has been performed for entangled qudits based on orbital angular momentum, time-energy uncertainty, and frequency bins. Here, we propose a QST for time-bin qudits, with which the number of measurement settings scales linearly with dimension $d$. Using the proposed scheme, we performed QST for a four-dimensional time-bin maximally entangled state with 16 measurement settings. We successfully reconstructed the density matrix of the entangled qudits, with which the average fidelity of th…
Using angular position-orbital angular momentum entangled photons, we propose an experiment to generate maximally entangled states of $D$-dimensional quantum systems, the so called qudits, by exploiting correlations of parametric down-converted photons. Angular diffraction masks containing $N$-slits in the arms of each twin photon define a qudit space of dimension $N^2$, spanned by the alternative pathways of the photons. Due to phase-matching conditions, the twin photons will pass only by symmetrically opposite angular slits, generating maximally entangled states between these different paths…
In this work, we study the local distinguishability of maximally entangled states (MESs). In particular, we are concerned with whether any fixed number of MESs can be locally distinguishable for sufficiently large dimensions. Fan and Tian \emph{et al.} have already obtained two satisfactory results for the generalized Bell states (GBSs) and the qudit lattice states when applied to prime or prime power dimensions. We construct a general twist-teleportation scheme for any orthonormal basis with MESs that is inspired by the method used in [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{70}, 022304 (2004)]. Using this tele…
Quantum optical microcombs in integrated ring resonators generate entangled photon pairs over many spectral modes, and allow the preparation of high dimensional qudit states. Ideally, those sources should be programmable and have a high generation rate, with comb lines tightly spaced for the implementation of efficient qudit gates based on electro-optic frequency mixing. While these requirements cannot all be satisfied by a single resonator device, for which there is a trade-off between high generation rate and tight bin spacing, a promising strategy is the use of multiple resonators, each gen…
The wedge product of vectors has been shown to yield the generalised entanglement measure I-concurrence, wherein the separability of the multiparty qubit system arises from the parallelism of vectors in the underlying Hilbert space of the subsystems. Here, we demonstrate the geometrical conditions of the post-measurement vectors which maximize the entanglement corresponding to the bi-partitions and can yield non-identical set of maximally entangled states. The Bell states for the two qubit case, GHZ and GHZ like states with superposition of four constituents for three qubits, naturally arise a…
We propose a method for generation of entangled photonic states in high dimensions, the so-called qudits, by exploiting quantum correlations of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) entangled photons, produced via Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. Diffraction masks containing $N$ angular slits placed in the path of twin photons define a qudit space of dimension $N^2$, spanned by the alternative pathways of OAM-entangled photons. We quantify the high-dimensional entanglement of path-entangled photons by the Concurrence, using an analytic expression valid for pure states. We report numerical resu…
We present a general scheme for multiparty-controlled teleportation of an arbitrary m-qudit ($d$-dimensional quantum system) state by using non-maximally entangled states as the quantum channel. The sender performs m generalized Bell-state measurements on her 2$m$ particles, the controllers take some single-particle measurements with the measuring basis $X_{d}$ and the receiver only need to introduce one auxiliary two-level particle to extract quantum information probabilistically with the fidelity unit if he cooperates with all the controllers. All the parties can use some decoy photons to se…
The need for high fidelity quantum teleportation arises in a variety of quantum algorithms and protocols. Unfortunately, conventional continuous variable teleportation schemes rely on EPR states that yield a fidelity that approaches unity only in the limit of an unphysical amount of squeezing. A new method, which utilizes an ensemble of single photon entangled states to teleport continuous variable states with fidelity approaching unity with finite resources was recently proposed by Andersen and Ralph [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 050504 (2013)]. We extend these ideas to consider the general case of …
A pure quantum state of N subsystems with d levels each is called k-multipartite maximally entangled state, written k-uniform, if all its reductions to k qudits are maximally mixed. These states form a natural generalization of N-qudits GHZ states which belong to the class 1-uniform states. We establish a link between the combinatorial notion of orthogonal arrays and k-uniform states and prove the existence of several new classes of such states for N-qudit systems. In particular, known Hadamard matrices allow us to explicitly construct 2-uniform states for an arbitrary number of N>5 qubits. We…
As a variant of the original quantum teleportation, the port-based teleportation has been proposed, and its various kinds of useful applications in quantum information processing have been explored. Two users in the port-based teleportation initially share an arbitrary pure state, which can be represented by applying one user's local operation to a bipartite maximally entangled state. If the maximally entangled state is a $2M$-qudit state, then it can be expressed as $M$ copies of a two-qudit maximally entangled state, where $M$ is the number of the ports. We here consider a generalization of …
I generalize the concept of balancedness to qudits with arbitrary dimension $d$. It is an extension of the concept of balancedness in New J. Phys. {\bf 12}, 075025 (2010) [1]. At first, I define maximally entangled states as being the stochastic states (with local reduced density matrices $\id/d$ for a $d$-dimensional local Hilbert space) that are not product states and show that every so-defined maximal genuinely multi-qudit entangled state is balanced. Furthermore, all irreducibly balanced states are genuinely multi-qudit entangled and are locally equivalent with respect to $SL(d)$ transform…
Defining a computational basis of pseudo-number states, we interpret a coherent state of large amplitude, $|α|\gg\frac{d}{2π}$, as a qudit --- a $d$-level quantum system --- in a state that is an even superposition of $d$ pseudo-number states. A pair of such coherent-state qudits can be prepared in maximally entangled state by generalized Controlled-$Z$ operation that is based on cross-Kerr nonlinearity, which can be weak for large $d$. Hence, a coherent-state optical qudit cluster state can be prepared by repetitive application of the generalized Controlled-$Z$ operation to a set of coherent …
In this work, we study a bipartite system composed by a pair of entangled qudits coupled to an environment. Initially, we derive a master equation and show how the dynamics can be restricted to a "diagonal" sector that includes a maximally entangled state (MES). Next, we solve this equation for mixed qutrit pairs and analyze the $I$-concurrence $C(t)$ for the effective state, which is needed to compute the geometric phase when the initial state is pure. Unlike (locally operated) isolated systems, the coupled system leads to a nontrivial time-dependence, with $C(t)$ generally decaying to zero a…
Entangled quantum states play an important role in quantum information science and also in quantum mechanics fundamental investigations. Implementation and characterization of techniques allowing for easy preparation of entangled states are important steps in such fields. Here we generated entangled quantum states encoded in photons transversal paths, obtained by pumping a non-linear crystal with multiple transversal Gaussian beams. Such approach allows us to generate entangled states of two qubits and two qutrits encoded in Gaussian transversal path of twin photons. We make a theoretical anal…
We study the one-to-two phase-covariant telecloning of a qudit without ancilla. We show that the fidelity of the two clones can reach that of the clones in the optimal ancilla-based one-to-two phase-covariant cloning and telecloning, i.e., the limitation of quantum mechanics. More interestingly, it is a nonmaximally entangled state rather than the maximally entangled state that can be used to realize such a telecloning task.
Entanglement is an important phenomenon that enables quantum information processing algorithms and quantum communications protocols. Although entangled quantum states are often described in radix-2, higher-radix qudits can become entangled as well. In this work, we both introduce partial entanglement, a concept that does not exist for radix-2 quantum systems, and differentiate between partial and maximal entanglement within non-binary quantum information processing systems. We also develop and present higher-radix maximal entanglement generator circuits that are analogous to the well-known Bel…
We construct multipartite graph states whose dimension is the power of a prime number. This is realized by the finite field, as well as the generalized controlled-NOT quantum circuit acting on two qudits. We propose the standard form of graph states up to local unitary transformations and particle permutations. The form greatly simplifies the classification of graph states as we illustrate up to five qudits. We also show that some graph states are multipartite maximally entangled states in the sense that any bipartite of the system produces a bipartite maximally entangled state. We further pro…
Using a geometric measure of entanglement quantification based on Euclidean distance of the Hermitian matrices, we obtain the minimum distance between a bipartite bound entangled $n$- qudit density matrix and the maximally mixed state. This minimum distance for which entangled density matrices necessarily have positive partial transpose (PPT) is obtained as $\frac{1}{\sqrt{\sqrt{d^n(d^n-1)}+1}}$, which is also a lower limit for the existence of 1-distillable entangled states. The separable states necessarily lie within a minimum distance of $\frac{R}{1+d^{n-1}}$ from the Identity, where R is the…
We consider a quantum system with a finite number of distinguishable quantum states, which may be partitioned freely by a number of quantum particles, assumed to be maximally entangled. We show that if we partition the system into a number of qudits, then the Hilbert space dimension is maximized when each quantum particle is allowed to represent a qudit of order $e$. We demonstrate that the dimensionality of an entangled system, constrained by the total number quantum states, partitioned so as to maximize the number of qutrits will always exceed the dimensionality of other qudit partitioning. …
The question of how Bell nonlocality behaves in bipartite systems of higher dimensions is addressed. By employing the probability of violation of local realism under random measurements as the figure of merit, we investigate the nonlocality of entangled qudits with dimensions ranging from $d=2$ to $d=7$. We proceed in two complementary directions. First, we study the specific Bell scenario defined by the Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu (CGLMP) inequality. Second, we consider the nonlocality of the same states under a more general perspective, by directly addressing the space of joint proba…
Quantum teleportation of qudits is revisited. In particular, we analyze the case where the quantum channel corresponds to a non-maximally entangled state and show that the success of the protocol is directly related to the problem of distinguishing non-orthogonal quantum states. The teleportation channel can be seen as a coherent superposition of two channels, one of them being a maximally entangled state thus, leading to perfect teleportation and the other, corresponding to a non-maximally entangled state living in a subspace of the d-dimensional Hilbert space. The second channel leads to a t…
We experimentally study the violation of the CGLMP inequality for entangled 2-qubit and 2-qutrit states with different degrees of entanglement using numerically optimized measurement settings. The qudits are encoded and manipulated in the frequency spectrum of broadband energy-time entangled photons by taking into account a spatial light modulator. The latter allows to discretize the spectrum into bins. By controlling each frequency bin individually, the generation of maximally and non-maximally entangled qutrits is verified through quantum state tomography.
Too much noise kills entanglement. This is the main problem in its production and transmission. We use a handy approach to indicate noise resistance of entanglement of a bi-partite system described by $d\times d$ Hilbert space. Our analysis uses a geometric approach based on the fact that if a scalar product of a vector $\vec{s}$ with a vector $\vec {e}$ is less than the square of the norm of $\vec{e}$, then $\vec{s}\neq\vec{e}$. We use such concepts for correlation tensors of separable and entangled states. As a general form correlation tensors for pairs of qudits, for $d>2$, is very difficul…
It is pointed out that every mixed state statistical operator is, up to a normalization constant, a super state vector in the Hilbert space of linear Hilbert-Schmidt operators acting in the state space of the quantum system. Hence, the well understood Schmidt canonical expansion of ordinary state vectors can be carried over to mixed states. In particular, it can be utilized for evaluating all the twins, i. e., the opposite-subsystem observables the measurement of one of which is, on account of entanglement, ipso facto also a measurement of the other. This is illustrated in full detail in the c…
Dynamic coupling of cavities to a quantum network is of major interest to distributed quantum information processing schemes based on cavity quantum electrodynamics. This can be achieved by active tuning a mediating atom-cavity system. In particular, we consider the dynamic coupling between two coupled cavities, each interacting with a two-level atom, realized by tuning one of the atoms. One atom-field system can be controlled to become maximally and minimally coupled with its counterpart, allowing high fidelity excitation confinement, Q-switching and reversible state transport. As an applicat…
Geometric relations between separable and entangled two-qubit and two-qutrit quantum information states are studied. To characterize entanglement of two qubit states, we establish a relation between reduced density matrix and the concurrence. For the rebit states, the geometrical meaning of concurrence as double area of a parallelogram is found and for generic qubit states it is expressed by determinant of the complex Hermitian inner product metric, where reduced density matrix coincides with the inner product metric. In the case of generic two-qutrit state, for reduced density matrix we find …
Recently, the nonlocal optimal probabilistic cloning (NLOPC) of two non-orthogonal qubit states has been proposed [Phys. Rev. A 86, 052332 (2012)] by means of an experimental setup based on a pair of twin photons in a maximally entangled state. Here we study the performance of the NLOPC protocol when implemented via a partially entangled state. We show that the errors introduced by the use of partial entanglement can be undone by applying a quantum state discrimination process. Since quantum state discrimination is a probabilistic process the correction succeeds with a certain probability but …
Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states are pure multi-partite generalizations of the bipartite maximally entangled states with the property that all reduced states of at most half the system size are in the maximally mixed state. AME states are of interest for multipartite teleportation and quantum secret sharing and have recently found new applications in the context of high-energy physics in toy models realizing the AdS/CFT-correspondence. We work out in detail the connection between AME states of minimal support and classical maximum distance separable (MDS) error correcting codes and,…
Focus is on two parties with Hilbert spaces of dimension d, i.e. "qudits". In the state space of these two possibly entangled qudits an analogue to the well known tetrahedron with the four qubit Bell states at the vertices is presented. The simplex analogue to this magic tetrahedron includes mixed states. Each of these states appears to each of the two parties as the maximally mixed state. Some studies on these states are performed, and special elements of this set are identified. A large number of them is included in the chosen simplex which fits exactly into conditions needed for teleportati…
