The apparent difficulty in recovering classical nonlinear dynamics and chaos from standard quantum mechanics has been the subject of a great deal of interest over the last twenty years. For open quantum systems - those coupled to a dissipative environment and/or a measurement device - it has been demonstrated that chaotic-like behaviour can be recovered in the appropriate classical limit. In this paper, we investigate the entanglement generated between two nonlinear oscillators, coupled to each other and to their environment. Entanglement - the inability to factorise coupled quantum systems into their constituent parts - is one of the defining features of quantum mechanics. Indeed, it underpins many of the recent developments in quantum technologies. Here we show that the entanglement characteristics of two `classical' states (chaotic and periodic solutions) differ significantly in the classical limit. In particular, we show that significant levels of entanglement are preserved only in the chaotic-like solutions.
Very recently [Phys. Rev. E 82, 021921 (2010)] a simple mechanism was presented by which a molecule subjected to forced oscillations, out of thermal equilibrium, can maintain quantum entanglement between two of its quantum degrees of freedom. Crucially, entanglement can be maintained even in the presence of very intense noise, so intense that no entanglement is possible when the forced oscillations cease. This mechanism may allow for the presence of non-trivial quantum entanglement in biological systems. Here we significantly enlarge the study of this model. In particular, we show that the per…
In this paper we investigate the generation of entanglement between two persistent current qubits. The qubits are coupled inductively to each other and to a common bias field, which is used to control the qubit behaviour and is represented schematically by a linear oscillator mode. We consider the use of classical and quantum representations for the qubit control fields and how fluctuations in the control fields tend to suppress entanglement. In particular, we demonstrate how fluctuations in the bias fields affect the entanglement generated between persistent current qubits and may limit the a…
We study the entanglement properties of a class of $N$ qubit quantum states that are generated in arrays of qubits with an Ising-type interaction. These states contain a large amount of entanglement as given by their Schmidt measure. They have also a high {\em persistency of entanglement} which means that $\sim N/2$ qubits have to be measured to disentangle the state. These states can be regarded as an entanglement resource since one can generate a family of other multi-particle entangled states such as the generalized GHZ states of $<N/2$ qubits by simple measurements and classical communicat…
We introduce a homology-based technique for the analysis of multiqubit state vectors. In our approach, we associate state vectors to data sets by introducing a metric-like measure in terms of bipartite entanglement, and investigate the persistence of homologies at different scales. This leads to a novel classification of multiqubit entanglement. The relative occurrence frequency of various classes of entangled states is also shown.
We explore the quantum-classical crossover of two coupled, identical, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) rings. The motivation for this work is based on a series of recent papers. In ~[1] we showed that the entanglement characteristics of chaotic and periodic (entrained) solutions of the Duffing oscillator differed significantly and that in the classical limit entanglement was preserved only in the chaotic-like solutions. However, Duffing oscillators are a highly idealised toy system. Motivated by a wish to explore more experimentally realisable systems we extended our work in…
The eigenstates of a quantum spin glass Hamiltonian with long-range interaction are examined from the point of view of localisation and entanglement. In particular, low particle sectors are examined and an anomalous family of eigenstates is found that is more delocalised but also has larger inter-spin entanglement. These are then identified as particle-added eigenstates from the one-particle sector. This motivates the introduction and the study of random promoted two-particle states, and it is shown that they may have large delocalisation such as generic ran- dom states and scale exactly like …
We study photon-photon correlations and entanglement generation in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to two qubits with an arbitrary spatial separation. We develop a novel Green function method to study vacuum-mediated qubit-qubit interactions, including both spontaneous and coherent couplings. As a result of these interactions, quantum beats appear in the second-order correlation function. We go beyond the Markovian regime and observe that such quantum beats persist much longer than the qubit life time. Using these non-Markovian processes, a high degree of long-distance entanglement can be …
We investigate the time-frequency signatures of an on-chip biphoton frequency comb (BFC) generated from a silicon nitride microring resonator. Using a Franson interferometer, we examine the multifrequency nature of the photon pair source in a time entanglement measurement scheme; having multiple frequency modes from the BFC results in a modulation of the interference pattern. This measurement together with a Schmidt mode decomposition shows that the generated continuous variable energy-time entangled state spans multiple pair-wise modes. Additionally, we demonstrate nonlocal dispersion cancell…
A persistent current qubit has two quantum states with opposite currents flowing in a superconducting loop. Their magnetic field couple to nuclear spins. The qubit state is not only perturbed by the spins but it also gets entangled with the spins' state on a very short timescale. However, when the same spins are exposed to a strong but less than critical external magnetic field, then the qubit field is just a small perturbation on top of the external field and the entanglement with each spin is negligible. For a qubit which is more microscopic than certain threshold this partial entanglement r…
We study the persistent currents and interspecies entanglement generation in a Bose-Bose mixture formed by two atomic gases (hereafter labelled by the letters A and B) trapped in a one-dimensional ring lattice potential with an artificial gauge field after a sudden quench from zero to strong interactions between the two gases. Assuming that the strength of these interactions is much larger than the single species energies and that the gas A is initially in the Mott-insulator regime, we show that the current of the gas B is reduced with respect to its value prior the interaction quench. Averagi…
We report dissipative dynamics of two valley excitons residing in the $K$ and $K^\prime$-valleys of bare WSe$_2$ monolayer and the one being integrated into a bimodal optical cavity. In the former, only when the exciton-field detunings in the $K$ and $K^\prime$-valleys are rigorously equal (resonant detuning), partially entangled stationary states can be created. Otherwise the concurrence of exciton qubits turns to zero. Remarkably, in the latter (the WSe$_2$ monolayer in a bimodal optical cavity), the transfers of entanglement from one subsystem (exciton/light) to the other (light/exciton) ta…
Classical rotations of asymmetric rigid bodies are unstable around the axis of intermediate momentof inertia, causing a flipping of rotor orientation. This effect, known as the tennis racket effect, quickly averages to zero in classical ensembles since the flipping period varies significantly uponapproaching the separatrix. Here, we explore the quantum rotations of rapidly spinning thermalasymmetric nanorotors and show that classically forbidden tunnelling gives rise to persistent tennisracket dynamics, in stark contrast to the classical expectation. We characterise this effect, demon-strating …
Classical systems can be entangled. Entanglement is defined by coincidence correlations. Quantum entanglement experiments can be mimicked by a mechanical system with a single conserved variable and 77.8% conditional efficiency. Experiments are replicated for four particle entanglement swapping and GHZ entanglement.
We consider the ground state of simple quantum systems coupled to an environment. In general the system is entangled with its environment. As a consequence, even at zero temperature, the energy of the system is not sharp: a projective measurement can find the system in an excited state. We show that energy fluctuation measurements at zero temperature provide entanglement information. For two-state systems which exhibit a persistent current in the ground state, energy fluctuations and persistent current fluctuations are closely related. The harmonic oscillator serves to illustrate energy fluctu…
We consider composability of quantum channels from a limited amount of entanglement via local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We show that any $k$-partially entanglement breaking channel can be composed from an entangled state with Schmidt number of $k$ via one-way LOCC. From the entanglement assisted construction we can reach an alternative definition of partially entanglement breaking channels.
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of a quantum system consisting of two-level atoms interacting with vacuum or thermal fields with classical driving fields. We find that the entanglement of the system can be improved by adjusting the classical driving field. The influence of the classical field and the purity of the initial state on the entanglement sudden death is also studied. It is shown that the time of entanglement sudden death can be controlled by the classical driving fields. Particularly, the entanglement sudden death phenomenon will disappear if the classical driving fields are…
Bipartite operations underpin both classical communication and entanglement generation. Using a superposition of classical messages, we show that the capacity of a two-qubit operation for error-free entanglement-assisted bidirectional classical communication can not exceed twice the entanglement capability. In addition we show that any bipartite two-qubit operation can increase the communication that may be performed using an ensemble by twice the entanglement capability.
We show that quantum entanglement has a very close classical analogue, namely secret classical correlations. The fundamental analogy stems from the behavior of quantum entanglement under local operations and classical communication and the behavior of secret correlations under local operations and public communication. A large number of derived analogies follow. In particular teleportation is analogous to the one-time-pad, the concept of ``pure state'' exists in the classical domain, entanglement concentration and dilution are essentially classical secrecy protocols, and single copy entangleme…
Phenomena induced by the existence of entanglement, such as nonlocal correlations, exhibit characteristic properties of quantum mechanics distinguishing from classical theories. When entanglement is accompanied by classical communication, it enhances the power of quantum operations jointly performed by two spatially separated parties. Such a power has been analyzed by the gap between the performances of joint quantum operations implementable by local operations at each party connected by classical communication with and without the assistance of entanglement. In this work, we present a new for…
We analyze the connections between entanglement dynamics and classical trajectories in a semiclassi-cal regime for two systems: A pair of coupled oscillators and the Jaynes-Cummings model. We find that entanglement production depends on classical invariant tori and such phenomenon is closely related to the power spectra of classical trajectories. Classical power spectrum with a larger number of frequency com-ponents corresponds to larger entanglement. We introduce a frequency entropy to describe the classical frequency distribution, and find that there is good correspondence between the classi…
The behaviour under particle loss of entanglement and nonlocality is investigated in multipartite quantum systems. In particular, we define a notion of persistency of nonlocality, which leads to device-independent tests of persistent entanglement. We investigate the persistency of various classes of multipartite quantum states, exhibiting a variety of different behaviours. A particular attention is devoted to states featuring maximal persistency. Finally we discuss a link between the symmetry of a state and its persistency, illustrating the fact that too much symmetry reduces the strength of c…
It is well known that entanglement is the resource of quantum teleportation. Teleportation can be accomplished using classical correlation (CC) with a teleportation fidelity (TF) upto $2/3$. In the present work we have studied TF, entanglement and CC in the presence of decoherence. We have found that significant increment of CC with respect to the strength of decoherence can lead TF in the non-classical region while entanglement is decreasing. We have also studied the protection of TF and entanglement using the technique of weak measurement and reverse weak measurement (WMRWM). Here we found t…
Entanglement bits or ``ebits'' have been proposed as a quantitative measure of a fundamental resource in quantum information processing. For such an interpretation to be valid, it is important to show that the same number of ebits in different forms or concentrations are inter-convertible in the asymptotic limit. Here we draw attention to a very important but hitherto unnoticed aspect of entanglement manipulation --- the classical communication cost. We construct an explicit procedure which demonstrates that for bi-partite pure states, in the asymptotic limit, entanglement can be concentrated …
We present an improved protocol for entanglement purification of bipartite mixed states. The protocol requires two-way classical communication and hence implies an improved lower bound on the quantum capacity with two-way classical communication of the quantum depolarizing channel.
We investigate entanglement for a composite closed system endowed with a scaling property allowing to keep the dynamics invariant while the effective Planck constant hbar_eff of the system is varied. Entanglement increases as hbar_eff goes to 0. Moreover for sufficiently low hbar_eff the evolution of the quantum correlations, encapsulated for example in the quantum discord, can be obtained from the mutual information of the corresponding \emph{classical} system. We show this behavior is due to the local suppression of path interferences in the interaction that generates the entanglement. This …
The property of the optimal signal ensembles of entanglement assisted channel capacity is studied. A relationship between entanglement assisted channel capacity and one-shot capacity of unassisted channel is obtained. The data processing inequalities, convexity and additivity of the entanglement assisted channel capacity are reformulated by simple methods.
We propose the usage of persistent homologies to characterize multipartite entanglement. On a multi-qubit data set we introduce metric-like measures defined only in terms of bipartite entanglement and then we derive barcodes. We show that they are able to provide a good classification of entangled states, at least for a small number of qubit.
Non-classical states that are characterized by their non-positive quasi-probabilities in phase space are known to be the basis for various quantum effects. In this work, we investigate the interrelation between the non-classicality and entanglement, and then characterize the non-classicality that precisely corresponds to entanglement. The results naturally follow from two findings: one is the general structure among non-classical, entangled, separable, and classical states over Hermitian operators, and the other a general scheme to detect non-classical states.
Cluster states were introduced in the context of measurement based quantum computing. In one dimension, the cluster Hamiltonian possesses topologically protected states. We investigate the Floquet dynamics of the cluster spin chain in an external field, interacting with a particle. We explore the entanglement properties of the topological and magnetic phases, first in the integrable spin lattice case, and then in the interacting quantum walk case. We find, in addition to thermalization, dynamical phase transitions separating low- and high-entanglement nonthermal states, reminiscent of the ones…
In this work we review and further develop the controversial concept of "classical entanglement" in optical beams. We present a unified theory for different kinds of light beams exhibiting classical entanglement and we indicate several possible extensions of the concept. Our results shed new light upon the physics at the debated border between the classical and the quantum representations of the world.
In this paper, we calculate the entanglement-assisted classical information capacity of amplitude damping channel and compare it with the particular mutual information which is considered as the entanglement-assisted classical information capacity of this channel in Ref. 6. It is shown that the difference between them is very small. In addition, we point out that using partial symmetry and concavity of mutual information derived from dense coding scheme one can simplify the calculation of entanglement-assisted classical information capacities for non-unitary-covariant quantum noisy channels.
Electronic devices all around us contain classical control circuits. Such circuits consist of a network of controllers which can read and write signals to wires of the circuit with the goal to minimize the cost function of the circuit's output signal. Here, we propose the use of shared entanglement between controllers as a resource to improve the performance of otherwise purely classical control circuits. We study a well-known example from the classical control literature and demonstrate that allowing two controllers to share entanglement improves their ability to control. More precisely, we e…
We investigate the entanglement dynamics and purity of a two-level atom, which is additionally driven by a classical field, interacting with a coherent field in a dissipative environment. It is shown that the amount of entanglement and the purity of the system can be improved by controlling the classical field.
The stabilization of steady state entanglement caused by action of a classical driving field in the system of two-level atoms with the dipole interaction accompanied by spontaneous emission is discussed. An exact solution shows that the maximum amount of concurrence that can be achieved in Lamb-Dicke limit is 0.43, which corresponds to the entanglement $\mathcal{E}_{max}=0.285$ ebit. Dependence of entanglement on interatomic distance and classical driving field is examined numerically.
We use the noisy entanglement-assisted classical capacity formula [arXiv:1609.08592] to create a coherent-attack security framework for Gaussian two-way quantum key distribution protocols in the asymptotic region.
This paper is essentially a lecture from the author's course on quantum information theory, which is devoted to the result of C. H. Bennett, P. W. Shor, J. A. Smolin and A. V. Thapliyal (quant-ph/0106052) concerning entanglement-assisted classical capacity of a quantum channel. A modified proof of this result is given and relation between entanglement-assisted and unassisted classical capacities is discussed.
When a composite quantum state interacts with its surroundings, both quantum coherence of individual particles and quantum entanglement will decay. We have shown that under vacuum noise, i.e., during spontaneous emission, two-qubit entanglement may terminate abruptly in a finite time [T. Yu and J. H. Eberly, \prl {93}, 140404 (2004)], a phenomenon termed entanglement sudden death (ESD). An open issue is the behavior of mixed-state entanglement under the influence of classical noise. In this paper we investigate entanglement sudden death as it arises from the influence of classical phase noise …
We numerically analyze the dynamical generation of quantum entanglement in a system of 2 interacting particles, started in a coherent separable state, for decreasing values of $\hbar$. As $\hbar\to 0$ the entanglement entropy, computed at any finite time, converges to a finite nonzero value. The limit law that rules the time dependence of entropy is well reproduced by purely classical computations. Its general features may then be explained by simple classical arguments, which expose the different ways entanglement is generated in systems which are classically chaotic or regular.
The generation of entanglement produced by a local potential interaction in a bipartite system is investigated. The degree of entanglement is contrasted with the underlying classical dynamics for a Rydberg molecule (a charged particle colliding on a kicked top). Entanglement is seen to depend on the structure of classical phase-space rather than on the global dynamical regime. As a consequence regular classical dynamics can in certain circumstances be associated with higher entanglement generation than chaotic dynamics. In addition quantum effects also come into play: for example partial reviv…
We analyze interrelation of quantum and classical entanglement. The latter notion is widely used in classical optic simulation of some quantum-like features of light. We criticize the common interpretation that "quantum nonlocality" is the basic factor differing quantum and classical realizations of entanglement. Instead, we point to the breakthrough Grangier et al. experiment on coincidence detection which was done in 1986 and played the crucial role in rejection of (semi-)classical field models in favor of quantum mechanics. Classical entanglement sources produce light beams with the coeffic…

Prior entanglement between sender and receiver, which exactly doubles the classical capacity of a noiseless quantum channel, can increase the classical capacity of some noisy quantum channels by an arbitrarily large constant factor depending on the channel, relative to the best known classical capacity achievable without entanglement. The enhancement factor is greatest for very noisy channels, with positive classical capacity but zero quantum capacity. Although such quantum channels can be simulated classically, no violation of causality is implied, because the simulation requires at least as …
In this work, the entanglement dynamics of a moving-biparticle system driven by an external classical field are investigated, where the moving-biparticle system is coupled with a zero temperature common environment. The analytical expressions of the density operator and the entanglement can be obtained by using the dressed-state basis when the total excitation number is one. We also discuss in detail the effects of different parameters on the entanglement dynamics. The results show that the classical driving can not only protect the entanglement, but also effectively eliminate the influence of…
We show that a singlet of many multi-level quantum systems arises naturally as the ground state of a physically-motivated Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian simply exchanges the states of nearest-neighbours in some network of qudits (d-level systems); the results are independent of the strength of the couplings or the network's topology. We show that local measurements on some of these qudits project the unmeasured qudits onto a smaller singlet, regardless of the choice of measurement basis at each measurement. It follows that the entanglement is highly persistent, and that through local measurement…
Entanglement has been shown to be necessary for pure state quantum computation to have an advantage over classical computation. However, it remains open whether entanglement is necessary for quantum computers that use mixed states to also have an advantage. The one clean qubit model is a form of quantum computer in which the input is the maximally mixed state plus one pure qubit. Previous work has shown that there is a limited amount of entanglement present in these computations, despite the fact that they can efficiently solve some problems that are seemingly hard to solve classically. This c…
Quantum entanglement is a form of correlation between quantum particles that cannot be increased via local operations and classical communication. It has therefore been proposed that an increment of quantum entanglement between probes that are interacting solely via a mediator implies non-classicality of the mediator. Indeed, under certain assumptions regarding the initial state, entanglement gain between the probes indicates quantum coherence in the mediator. Going beyond such assumptions, there exist other initial states which produce entanglement between the probes via only local interactio…
From its seemingly non-intuitive and puzzling nature, most evident in numerous EPR-like gedankenexperiments to its almost ubiquitous presence in quantum technologies, entanglement is at the heart of modern quantum physics. First introduced by Erwin Schrödinger nearly a century ago, entanglement has remained one of the most fascinating ideas that came out of quantum mechanics. Here, we attempt to explain what makes entanglement fundamentally different from any classical phenomenon. To this end, we start with a historical overview of entanglement and discuss several hidden variables models that …
It is known that if the quantum gates in a proposed quantum computer are so noisy that they are incapable of generating entanglement, then the device can be efficiently simulated classically. If the measurements and single particle operations are restricted, then the same statement can be true for generalised non-quantum notions of entanglement. Here we show that this can improve the applicability of limited-entanglement simulation algorithms. In particular, we show that by using a non-quantum notion of separability a classical simulation algorithm of Harrow & Nielsen can efficiently simulate …
Quantum computation requires efficient long-term storage devices to preserve quantum states. An attractive candidate for such storage devices is qubits connected to a common dissipative environment. The common environment gives rise to persistent entanglements in these qubit systems. Hence these systems act efficiently as a storage device of entanglement. However, the existence of a common environment often requires the physical proximity of the qubits and hence results in direct dipolar coupling between the qubits. In this work, we investigate the total effect of the dipolar coupling on the e…
This note shows how quantum entanglement may be simulated in classical computing. The simulated entanglement protocol is implemented using oblivious transfer in the simplest case and other many-to-one mappings in more general cases. For the case where the mapping is of order k, we prove a theorem that gives us the function of the entangled state. A useful generalization beyond this research will be the implementation of quantum states with arbitrary probability amplitude functions.
